However, the No. 2 course has become a personal favorite for being a fun, yet challenging course that's a great bang for your buck. ... Before Dubs, #2 was Cog Hills Championship course and they had quite a few tournaments back in the day. Of course several new holes have changed the nature of the course and imo made it better. (#4, #7, #8 and #9) But it is a real shotmakers paradise and I really enjoyed playing there. Sadly it was in much better shape when Joe Jemsek was alive and refused to install cart paths as he wanted a Country Club experience for the muni golfer while Frank Jemsek is more interested in profits* but still a very interesting track. * A unique thing Joe did was aerate 1/2 the green and put the flag on the half not aerated. Then come back 3 weeks later and aerate the other half and put the flag on the half almost back to normal. You could have a long putt through aeration holes, but not around the pin when it mattered. I do think the No. 2 course often gets overlooked due to Dubsdread, but it's still a very solid track all around. The tee sheets are always packed, so I'm not surprised they're prioritizing profits at this point. I wish they would bring a tour event or the BMW Championship back to No. 4. Popular Post Indy_Oz
Desperately grasping at the positives from today's round. First time playing Purdue University's Birck Bolermaker Ackerman-Allen course (nice punchy name, lol), in West Lafayette, Indiana (USA). The course is in great condition. They have hosted the Indiana girls' championships the last few days (my league oppo on Thursday said his daughter was playing there). The greens were punched last weekend and were cut short and recently rolled, so they were rapid! After playing only my local muni the last few rounds, the step up in pace of greens was tough and I just didn't get comfortable putting. By far my worst putting round in the past 18 months. I know it got it my head and I just couldn't judge pace. Line and reading the green wasn't too bad. Irons and fairway woods were great and I hit a bunch of really nice approach shots. After a few pushes right and slices, I found my groove with the driver and started hitting fairways and just into the first cut rough. 6/14 fairways hit. A further 4 in the first cut. 12/18 greens in regulation. Not too bad for me on a windy day. But I shot 90. LMAO. Just one of those days that I need to put behind me and move forward. Need to get to the practice green a LOT more and particularly before any rounds at unfamiliar courses! MissionMan
Managed second spot in A grade and fourth spot overall in our Saturday comp with a 39 pointer in some sketchy conditions. Rain most of the day. Worst part about it was I only hit 7 greens in reg and 6 fairways, my chipping and putting saved my ass. Almost holed out on the 18th from 130 yards for my 3rd into a par 5, ball landed about 3 yards behind the hole, spun back over the edge and ended up less a foot away. Nice to close out the day with a birdie. jbern
Went out to a local 9 hole course that used to be pretty when it came to quality. They’ve been renovating it for the last 3 years and it’s in incredible shape right now. The greens are firm and fast and nicely undulated. They added and island par 3 and moved several other tee boxes to provide more strategy. I was pretty impressed and will definitely be going back (and I won’t forget to take photos!!). Overall, I shot a +4, 40. Which isn’t a terrible score for me, but it is when I get off to a hot start (-1 thru 3) and when I’m putting well. Stats and scorecard below: FW hit: 3/7 FW playable: 6/7 (one ended up short and behind a tree with not shot to hit the green) GIR: 3/9 (my most disappointing stat) Putts: 14 (great putting round with the DF3!) Like I said, started the round -1 thru 3. Then on hole 4 I chunked my 7i about 30 yds short… then shanked my chip… then duffed the next chip… then chipped it to a foot. Hole 5 was a perfect drive that left me with an 8i into a PAR 5! I pulled it just left and it was stuck between the sand and the lip of the bunker. So I had to chip it out into the bunker, then onto the green, then two putt bogey. Lots of good shots, a few terrible shots and a couple tough breaks. CSiders12
I am a member at a golf club which my boss is a member of. Now, I love my boss and have a great relationship with him. The intimidating thing about my boss is that he holds anywhere between a scratch to +2 handicap. He is a great golfer and almost everyone knows it. He asked me if I wanted to be part of his group out at the golf club and compete for money/prizes. I love competing, so this was an easy decision. Yesterday morning was my first time playing with them, so the pressure was on to compete at a high level. I am not going to lie, I haven't been that jittery over an opening tee shot in a long while. My main goal was to make solid contact and keep the ball in play. Luckily, I did just that. I pushed my tee shot a little up the right, but had a full shot into the green. My course has a lot of undulation and slope, so you can get some pretty tricky lies. My shot into the green was on a steep hill with the ball well above my feet. I made okay contact with it and got it to the front of the green with a back pin location. I had about a 75 foot putt and not surprisingly, three putt for a bogey. Could've been better, but could've been a hell of a lot worse. Luckily, I bounced back and birdied the second hole to get back to even on the round. On the front nine, I had some really nice shots, and others that weren't so nice. I shot a 39 on the front which I was pretty happy with. Copy and paste for the back nine which I also shot a 39 and got out with a 78. 78 is a typical score for me at this course, so I was happy that I played to my ability. Overall, I shot 78 with 3 birdies, 1 double, 7 bogeys, and the rest pars. The double bogey was the only hole that I was upset with, after flubbing two wedge shots. Luckily, I bounced back and parred the last hole. All in all, I walked out winning $5 and invited back for the next time. Successful overall, but still some work to do. Popular Post Preeway
Yesterday I learned first hand why the pros swap out their wedges depending on the course they play. All my wedges have significant bounce, most at 10°, which has always worked well for me. But Tetherow is a true links style course with very firm fairways and the grass is mowed so short you’d swear they aren’t even growing any. Greens are the same way. I couldn’t hit a chip shot to save my life on the first 5 holes and then it dawned on me that I was hitting them all thin because I couldn’t get under the ball. I was even making worse when I opened up the club face. I won’t be rushing out anytime soon to buy a special set of wedges for this type of turf but it does give an even greater appreciation for how they play their short game at The Open. A lot of my local courses get very firm through summer and most have very firm bunkers (that could really do with digging out, better drainage and more sand). For this reason I swapped out my 60* wedge for a low bounce one. My 56* SW is moderately high bounce, but as it's the Tiger grind, it's meant to play lower bounce. However, when opening the face it feels high bounce. The new 60* low bounce sits lower square and when opened up. I'm chipping off hard ground and firm bunkers much better since making the change. I like having the combination of wedges in the bag so I don't have to think about picking wedges for different courses. I just mention as I thought about it for a while after watching chipping tutorials talk about it. Preeway, TJ Hall, Michael.Sandoval33 and 2 others 5 Quote 2024 WITB: Driver: Ai Smoke Max 9* (@8*) w. I won’t be rushing out anytime soon to buy a special set of wedges for this type of turf but it does give an even greater appreciation for how they play their short game at The Open. great post, I had a long discussion with the "head fitter" at Golf Town about wedges, bounce etc. etc..at the end of the conversation I asked "so what you are telling me is I need 4 set's of wedges at 250.00 canadian per club? It is so ridiculous. We don't have trailers full of free wedges to pick from every week (although we are not the 200 best golfers in the world) but really, give me a break from all this wedge talk, I would probably try and adjust with bump and run or putter etc. save me some money lol TJ Hall, Michael.Sandoval33, cksurfdude and 2 others 5 Quote committed to performance excellence

It almost always led to a bogey as I never play that shot but I might be swayed to pick up a low bounce wedge to keep handy for those rare occasions. PrismFlopper
Was able to get out for an evening 9 after work last night. Started pretty good but fell apart a few times and crushed my score. Played Widows Walk in Scituate MA. Very tough course and can be very unforgiving if you don’t hit the fairway. Ended at +11 over 9 which wasn’t great but way better than I scored there the last time I played there. So something’s to work on for next time. Starting to feel like myself again and recently played a “okay” round. I currently have custom fit Cobra LTDx irons/wedges, a Vokey 60(cause my short game has been the best part of my game, and a Maverick 9 deg. Driver. Driving is the worst part of my game so My 4 iron usually takes alot of the long game abuse.
Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
I got my usual Sunday morning round in today before it got too hot. Today was the first time I birdied all par 5’s in the same round. Lipped out my eagle putt on one of them. Struggled a bit with my driver but I was sore from home repairs yesterday. Two advil after the fifth hole fixed that. A few holes later I was turning well again. Struggled with my 54 degree wedge most of the day (fat or thin) until I threatened its life on the 18th which is a par 5. Good drive and good layup to 10 yards before the river. All I had left was 80 yards over the river to the pin. I told my 54 degree “Perform or in the river you go”. Knowing its life was in jeopardy it stepped up to the task and landed 2 feet from the pin. Birdie to close out the round. Came in with a 71. I just hate when I have to threaten my clubs like that. No, I wouldn’t actually throw it in the river but he didn’t need to know that. sirchunksalot, injectedcutty, TJ Hall and 9 others 5 5 2 Quote Driver, TSi 1 S Flex 3 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 7 Wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 Hybrid King Tec MMT R Flex Irons, Vice VGI01 Mitsubishi Wiz 60-gram regular flex (6 - PW) VGW01, 50 Degree. Popular Post Shrek74
Had one of my best rounds in years - 44/45/89. It was a humid round, overcast with some rain a couple hours before the round. Surprisingly, it was CPO even though all the fairways were plenty dry to drive on. Wasn't pretty at times, but I was able to get around and break 90 for the first time in many years. Gotta work on those GIR's/FIR's and the short game. Short game was the only thing that was negative strokes gained in the round (compared to other 20 hdcp). Still pretty good vs a 15, at least for me at a 20. Still have a LOT to fix with my iron swing to get more consistent and to add more power. But I'll get there as I see sparks of it throughout the rounds. Popular Post Matherly11
So I’m a 26 handicap and have recently averaged around 102, I have in the last 2 months shot my best round which was 87 with a 43 on the front and a 44 on the back and I was so happy to set my new PR by two strokes! Now two days ago I played again and was playing out of my mind on the front making a change of just keeping the driver in bag and using my 3 wood off the tee in an effort to hit more fairways! I shot a 39 on the front and then returned to my form with some pulled shots off the tee bad putting and 2 lost balls that finished me at a 49 on the back. That put me at an 88 on the day which I am happy with but left me dreaming of what could have been. I normally only hit about 3 fairways around and using 3 wood off the tee helped me hit 6 but 5 of those were on the front. I only averaged around 2 GIR and was able to hit 9 and 7 of those were on the front and one just barely on the fringe I was able to chip in. Ended with 37 putts which is barely below average for me averaging around 2 putts but also had 4 3 putts which is always room to improve.
