I've been thinking about getting some new irons, I was wondering what are some of the new lofts on your new irons you have purchased within the last couple of years and if they are stronger lofts than your old sets?  Also, how long did it take you to get used to the longer distance?

Loft doesn’t always equal more distance. I have had players distance irons that were roughly the same distance as my CBs.

speed and dynamic loft play a role into launch and spin which will have an an impact on difference.

i really don’t pay attention to loft of the clubs i buy so without going back and looking them up I couldn’t say what the difference are. But I’ve played roughly the same style of irons for the last 15 years and doubt loft has changed much in them. Only thing I concern myself with is are the distances consistent from shot to shot.

It doesn’t take me long to get used to new clubs. One range session and I have an idea what they do and within a round or two on the course I’m good

As your set isn't that old I don't think you would notice that much of a different. You may see a bit of height difference, maybe. However given your set is traditional lofted or close to it I think most will show a bit of a difference.

Loft may help distance a little bit, but I would be more interested in how it gets that distance (launch, spin and all that good stuff).

If you stay with traditional style irons I don't suspect you will see that much difference. Now if you are going to players distance or something bigger like that then maybe we will see some larger changes.

A quick bag mapping and you will be used to them quick.  May have to get a couple bent in a worst case scenario

Don’t know, don’t care.   Some people hit new irons farther some don’t.   The goal is to know what club goes what distance and being able to fill distances between the longest and shortest club in your bag.   When I get clubs I learn how far each goes and adjust to get proper gapping.

here's the way that I look at irons... and this is just me.

I hit my irons from ~210 to 100 yards.
I play either 5-gap or 6-gap (will swap the 5 with a hybrid regularly) I do have a 4 iron but rarely play it
That's 7 clubs for a 110 yard window.
I like to see ~10 yards between each club but understand the longer clubs might have a bigger window.

Whatever shaft/head/loft/lie/length helps me accomplish that with the proper launch angle then I'm good. That's why I'm a big fan of fittings/data.

For my game, I don't want a 7 iron that goes 190 yards or a PW that goes 90.

Not sure how you hit a 5 iron 210 yards but a gap wedge only 100 yards.  That's leaves over 18 yards per club gapping on average. That is the largest gap I have ever heard of between clubs.

haha... I knew someone would do that math. I meant to start at 110 instead of 100. My 54 goes 90-110.

GW: 110 - 120
PW: 120 - 130
9I: 130-140
8I: 140-155
7I: 155-170
6I: 170-190
5I: 190-210

As you can see the gaps increase with the longer clubs.  🤷‍♂️

I've been thinking about getting some new irons,

I would somewhat restate what others have said, but I will give you what mine are.  And why I purchased them.

Callaway Mavrik Pro(current)

4-21d(185),  5-23.5(175),  6-26.5(165),  7-30.5(155),  8-34.5(145),  9-38.5(135), PW-43(125,  AW-48(110),  52d(100),  56d(70)

Taylor Make Burner 2.0 Previous set.

4-21d(185),  5-24(175),       6-27(165),   7-31(155),     8-35(145),  9-40(130),      PW-45(115),   AW-50(90),   56-(80)

Now to be clear, I bought new clubs only, because I believe I deserved a new set for retirement, not because I believed in any way that new clubs would make me play better!!

I looked at every brand of club, and have to be honest, I just wanted a new set of clubs and didn't care what the brand was.

I DID HOWEVER, have a very clear idea of how far each club went with a routine strike of the ball.  With the lofts of the old set I had a gap between 130-115.   I purchased the new clubs calculating that the more aggressive lofts on wedges would fill in the gap I had.  This came by eliminating a hybrid at the top, which was to cover a distance that I rarely had 190, and add a 52degree.   As it turns out the added Cleveland 52 degree wedge fit in perfectly to give me a 100 hard club, and now more aggressively lofted PW have me the 125 I needed.

At 1.5, and 2 degrees more aggressively lofted I did get the little more distance out of the clubs I was expecting.  And it didn't take long, you just have to keep track of how far each one goes.

  • 5 weeks later...

I have Burke forged irons. I am 72 years old. I am an 8 handicap. I have a GC quad and a full swing launch monitor to monitor my distances. Over the years my iron distances started getting closer and closer together. Especially the longer irons were all going almost the same distance. I added a 4 hybrid and a 5 wood instead of the longer irons. With the shorter irons what I did was go to 5° difference in loft between irons instead of a 4° difference. Now my 10 yard gaps between the clubs are back. My 6 iron loft is almost the same as a a 4 iron but because of the way the new irons are made it still flies high and lands softly. The gap between my 6 iron and 4 hybrid is perfect.
60° lob wedge
55° sand wedge
50° gap wedge
45° pitching wedge
40° 9 iron
35° 8 iron
30° 7 iron
26° 6 iron

I hate Golf and Golf hates me. I keep playing for the feeling of the well struck shot that actually does what I want it to!

I'm a senior player as well.

Your numbered iron lofts are just a little bit stronger than mine, so I go with just three wedges:

Driver: 13.5°
Driving iron: 19° (bent from 18°)
5-wood: 18°
7-wood:  21°
9-wood:  24°
5-iron:  27°
6-iron:  30°
7-iron:  34°
8-iron:  38°
9-iron:  42°
W1:   48°
W2:  54°
W3:  60°

I also have a Louisville Golf hickory shafted set for fun, and the irons are about two club numbers weaker still.

brassie:  14°
spoon:  18°
baffy:  21°
1-iron:  20°
2-iron:  24°
3-iron:  28°
4-iron:  32°
5-iron:  36°
6-iron:  40°
7-iron:  44°
8-iron:  48°
niblick:  52°
sand iron:  56°

Contrasting these lofts from the hickory replica set with modern GI clubs is even more radically different.   Titleist T-300s have a 23° 5-iron!

It makes it funny when somebody with new clubs tries to club himself off what you just hit.
