Driver with 3 wood shaft

Recommended Posts

I posted about this in another topic, going to move it to here in equipment!

I played in the State AM at Bellerive a few weeks ago now. Made a DRASTIC change the week before. Took my 3 wood out of the bag and put a Ping Max 10K with a 3 wood length shaft in for a second option off the tee. I would HIGHLY recommend anybody out there try’s this. I don’t think it would have been possible to hit much straighter than I did that week! 💯🔥

It’s absolutely worth your time and effort to ATLEAST try it. Honestly.

A few years back, before all the talk was about mini-drivers, the "thriver" was being discussed.

Back then, several of the OEMs were offering high loft drivers, up to 16 degrees, with full-sized 460cc clubheads.

People were taking those, putting a 3-wood or shorter length shaft on them, and calling them "thrivers."

The people who played them swore by them, but not that many people tried them.

We don't really have the very high loft driver heads offered by most of the OEMs anymore,

so we can't make a "thriver" that's much weaker lofted than 12 or 13°

Lie angle wasn't a problem with the shorter thrivers because most driver clubheads are very toe-up to begin with.

The harder part was restoring swing-weight with the shorter shafts.

You got me thinking I need to try my 19⁰ hybrid shaft on my driver head now.  🤔🤔🤔 (My 3 wood is the same shaft as on the driver, but a little shorter I think?)

Would that be a bad idea long tern if it works?

Probably not.  How can anything that works be a bad idea?

However, your driver clubhead,
as big as it is,
will be a lot lighter than the little hybrid head that was on that shaft.

You'll need to do something to get a playable swing weight.

Shaft weight inserts or more weight on the head itself?  This is an area I have e yet to even approach yet

Swing weight will be the biggest obstacle when trying things like this. I didn’t change anything when I put my 3 wood shaft in. But now the head is super light. I have a feeling timing could get off sometimes with this weight.

I just picked up a TD Max driver and had it set at 45.25" to start. I also haventhe Ti340 mini that plays around 44". I may take the mini shaft and put it in the TDMax and see how that works., otherwise, I'll need to grab another shaft and cut it down to be 43.5" playing length and test. But I agree that the shorter shaft for many is a positive option.

2 things I learned yesterday from swapping the shafts.  First, there is a huge difference between my 3w and driver shaft.  I thought they were the same shafts, but they are indeed NOT the same. In any regards! Driver shaft on right, 3w shaft on left.

20240831_140721.jpg.e9f28f23113fc3be6449d51912eefb80.jpg

After swapping i Layed them side x side with the adapter tips even together

20240831_140718.jpg.7d8f6998a9aa84503e5d06f769ae55c7.jpg

Secondly,  do not forget to adjust your driver heads to compensate for the difference in the lie angle.  The loft will be the same, but the lie angle was not.

I also made the error of testing this on the course, and over a water hole.  Ooops. 🤪

i did not hit the driver well at all. But the 3w with driver shaft did result in an extra 15-20 yards or so. I'm confused...lol

Why would they be the same shaft?  One is 10g heavier and tipped for a fairway(or should be).  Plus as weight is added the properties of the shaft can and will change.

Also I thought Titleist had different adapters for fairways and drivers so how’d they work swapping?

Same tips and sleeves, same loft/lie charts.  This was just an experiment based off of virtually no knowledge about shafts. But from what I read, the fairway shaft would have a lower kick point.

Foolish, probably, but I don't want to cut down a perfectly good shaft.

And I just confirmed that they are all interchangeable. Not sure I would use a hybrid shaft on the driver though.  Afraid I may snap it.

I am a little confused.  I was always led to believe that the driver and FW tips on a Titleist were different.   Isn’t that the case?

Not on these. See above for the pictures

The hosel on the driver vs the 3w/hybrids are different lengths, I assume to compensate for the tip sleeves inside the heads?

I do remember that I had a friend  have his titleist driver re-tipped (one of the 900 series) and he had a 60g regular flex shaft I wanted to try. It wouldn't fit into my driver head. The insert in mine was different than the tip on his shaft. His was flared more at the end of the tip.

All driver adapters for Titleist are compatible from 910 to current. That’s from Titleist website. If it didn’t work in your 910 driver it wasn’t a sure fit adapter or at least not a real one

Love all the comments and people that have tried this! I saw immediate results the first time I put it in the bag.

if you don’t, you may be more swing weight driven. The head of the driver being very light. You may need to add some weight to the head to get a little better feel!

From everything I am reading the driver and fairway adapters are different.  You can’t just look at it installed in the head.  You can use the driver shafts across multiple releases and fairways across multiple releases but you can’t put a fairway in a driver or a driver in a fairway.  Hybrid are different as well.
