What are things that you really love about golf?

I love that golf is a game of honour,  I love stepping up to a long birdie putt and seeing the line and just pouring it in, the smell of freshly mown fairways, crushing a drive and nailing the approach on a critical hole in a match, the feeling of absolute joy that travels up the shaft through your hands and up into your shoulders and into your brain when you melt an iron approach shot.

and there's soooooooo much moooooooooooreeee! :P

It isn't the challenge of the game for me... that just comes with the territory, whether you like it or not. It isn't scoring low, or making that great iron shot, or sinking that long birdie putt.... although, those don't suck!

I'ts  being on the course alone to reflect on life, and things that could have been done better. It's being on the course with family and friends, enjoying a beautiful day. It's playing in an outing for a charity and winning... and then, collectively as a team, we turn all the winnings back in for the charity because we really only played for the fun of playing in the event.

It used to be all about how good I could get (not very...lol) and how far I could hit the ball. I think as you get older, the reasons for loving the game change. I'm starting to see a whole lot more value in the intangibles that come with golf, other than just scoring well.

Don't get me wrong, I love that golf is a game of honor, and I love the well struck ball or a crushed drive in the middle of the fairway.... a lot! But, given the choice between being a really good player, and the joy I get from just being out on a great day on a beautiful piece of land with good friends and a few beers (and/or flask), I'll take the latter every day.

The challenge. The fact you can play hero on every shot and it's only up to you. The fact you can get lost in a golf course, literally just marveling at nature when your yards from the interstate. Golf is sometimes a sport to me, other times I go there to work out problems in work and at home. Usually I leave with a clear head and more importantly a sense of who and what I am going forward off the course.

Playing with my mates for a dollar and it feels like we are playing for the British Open Claret Jug, pulling off that impossible shot through the 6 feet gap when you pick the right club with the right trajectory, the joy of watching a mate who has struggled to keep a ball on the planet let alone the golf course come good and put in a great round, watching the kangaroos on my course do what kangaroos do (ie eat grass and have sex in spring) buying a new set of irons and peeling off the plastic wrappers, playing with said irons for the first time,  breaking out a brand new titleist/srixon from a sleeve on the first tee.  And there's still sooooooooo much more :)

We are very blessed with the wild life we have on our course.  The birdlife too is amazing with lots of different varieties.  Snakes are very busy there in summer.  Not in plague proportions or any thing but it is common to see a few slithering across a fairway or coiled up in the rough.  Next time I'm out I'll get a photo or two of the kanga's and post them here.

Would love to see some pics. Nothing exotic here; just quail, pheasant, jackrabbits and cottontails, rattlesnakes, coyotes, eagles, hawks, and herons and pelicans flying overhead. Last year we had baby Hawks on the #1 green.

In Daytona, there was a family of bald eagles that made the 10th hole of the north course their home. That was cool to see them out in the fairway and be close to them. Here in Yuma, I've seen roadrunners but no coyote and only a 3 foot rattlesnake. I did see a coyote in Vegas, but was disappointed no Acme package was nearby.

The fact that I can get a few hours outside relaxing away from work. Golf has transformed for me from a very competitive game to my way of relaxation. Nothing better than four hours without an iPhone or iPad in front of me.

This roo is actually a young juvenile and every time I took a step closer to him he'd back up a step.  Sometimes they just don't care and you can get close enough to pat them other times they get quite skittish and hop off at the slightest provocation.

Yes Kenny, he is one big nasty buck.  We have a few like him and they get pretty frisky come spring time and get quite snakey when you try and chase them off the greens when they are chock into a receptive doe and junior is laying down next to them watching how it is done :)

Also attached is a picture of our trained combat Kangaroos ;) and early morning view down our 18th fairway with the green in the foreground.

When I was 8, my Grandfather "recruited" me to caddy for him at the local Muny.  Every Saturday morning I pulled his BagBoy cart filled with Powerbilt clubs around the hilly 18 hole course.  I listened and learned from him the correct way to play golf.....54 years later, i still play every week and every week I envision those times with my Grandfather.......I guess that is what i like most about golf.  Sure, there's the commaraderie of playing with your friends, the "feel" of hitting one sweet or making a 25 footer to end the match tied, but my favs are the times I spent with my Grandfather on the course.  At 10, I got my first pair of golf shoes, and I just loved the clickety clack sound of walking around on the concrete sidewalks. I still cherish those memories.

I was gonna write, what I enjoy most is the peaceful time with friends to get away from the hustle of life. But, then I saw kangaroos on that course, and I have changed my answer to Kangaroos that I will have to go to Australia to see!

Some special memories there Foz and pretty much what I had in mind when  I started this thread.  We all have those things that we love about the game and most of them are about some kind of interaction with people that mean something to us, how lucky are we to be able to write about it!
