Moving from Ping I20's, want suggestions

Hey friends,

 

I'm thinking of upgrading from my Ping I20 irons. I'm looking for a little more distance and about the same level of forgiveness. Can't afford new obviously so I'm looking for a set of irons that are definitely "crossover". Have absolutely no bias in companies and will try anything.  I would love nothing more than to just go hit some but there aren't any options for me.

Take a look at the Apex Pros, last year's model. I pick up a set early this year and feel great yet very forgiving. Check out Callaway's pre owned site, got mine for around $325 in great condition.

Heard nothing but good things from the Apex line and that price is pretty reasonable.

You could try the Cally xhot, or xhot pro as well, the Mizuno Jpx 800,825,850 line are also another option, an older set of Titelist AP1's like the 710, or 712 model, I think you can pick some of those up for very reasonable prices if you look around,

I went from Mizuno to Cally, only because I couldn't get what I wanted from Mizzy in LH, the XR pro iron came out at the time and they are really good.

I'm seriously considering going to TourEdge exotics CB pro h. I am just floored by their driver (I tried to replace it with no luck) and use their hybrid. Paired with a Snell MTB they are incredibly long. Don't hear much from their irons but I'm thinking I can't go wrong with them.

Consider the Mizuno JPX 850 Forged. I moved to them from the i20's. I feel like they have i20 forgiveness with a sweet Mizuno forged feel. You can probably find a decent set used.

No I haven't. Right now at the top of my list it's callaway apex pro followed by Nike pro combo.

 

I can't buy anything new because I can't afford it. Also looking at Wilson staff m3, r11, sldr, cobras older pro offerings....those types of clubs. Something with decent forgiveness but a little more distance.

I know you don't have a fitter nearby, but there is nothing wrong with the i20's that a shaft change wouldn't help.  The trick is finding the shaft that fits your swing, so a fitter is necessary.  There is more distance out there than what you get from an S300.

That's true, but there are always more than one way to skin a cat too. If increased distance is your primary criteria, then just take one more club - simple. Once you go down the route of seeking more distance from your core set of irons, you also have the knock-on effect of filling yardage gaps at either end of the bag too. Technically, for an iron set you are looking to hit the ball a specific distance - not a maximum distance. Therefore people who ask how to hit their irons further (assuming the rest of the fit is good), then using a longer iron is the easiest, cheapest and most logical choice.

Agreed.  I was assuming that he was looking for more distance from the longer irons to fill a gap to the woods/hybrids, which probably means adding a wedge.

That's why I suggested reshafting!  They are great clubs, and what I have been playing for the last several years.  The only reason they are not still in my bag is that I really wanted to play my old set of MacGregor VIP 1025M irons, but the S300 shaft was just no good for this old body anymore.  I put the UST ProForce Rv2 75 regular flex soft-stepped, adjusted the loft to the i20 specs, and they are simply amazing!  A few yards longer than the i20's with stock regular flex, and the ball flight is higher which I need.

Would you say that the MacGregor VIPs are better then the Wilson Staff FG tour V2? I'm curious because I have been looking for v2 but did see a set of VIPs at 2nd Swing...

This is pretty much what I meant. My 4 iron is useless right now. It goes about the same distance as my 5. We have a par 3 playing about 210 yards and my 3 hybrid is too long for the hole but I can't reach it with my 4. Maybe I should consider a driving iron?

I am looking for a specific distance. For example I'd like to hit my 5 iron 200 and my 4 215 but both go about 190-195.

Just as a general rule when you are hitting consecutive irons the same distance it's time to consider another hybrid. A 4 hybrid (22,23) might resolve the entire matter. I'm assuming you are generally satisfied with your irons otherwise.

I am sure it depends on the hybrid, but I have found that my 5H is longer than my 5i.  My next club is my 3H.  My 5H fills my gap between my 5i and my 3H.

I think I might lower my callaway 3 wood to 14 than get an 18 hybrid and a 22 hybrid

Although I do sometimes swap in my 4i, I usually carry D, 3w, 2h, 4h. I can crank the 4h up or down, and it is silly long, so it fills th 2h-5i gap pretty well, plus I only take out a wedge rarely (counting PW, I carry 4).

Same here with the wedge setup. I think that is what I will be doing. I'll update once it's done. Thanks again everyone for the advice.

Bingo. Generally hybrids don't follow iron lofts and a hybrid with the same loft as the iron will fly further due to length of shaft and the face. I have a 23* Callaway hybrid that I can hit 250 quite consistently and it is labeled as a "4" hybrid...no shot I could hit any 4 iron that far. When looking at hybrids you most times need to forget the number and loft and focus on a specific distance.
