M2/Rocketbalz Fairways

Here's a shot out to the MGS crew for comparing an older club to a newer one and demonstrating how different test conditions might create different results in terms of yardage gain.

I would still love to see Older Driver vs. New Driver under some differing conditions but this was a huge start and an enjoyable read.  The reason I'd like to see several generations of drivers compared is because that's the club that has received the most R and D attention over the past decade (more than that no doubt.)  Fairways are late in the game because they were a throw away for a while but have now made a comeback.

At any rate thanks for the test and the data, not the results that I expected to see but thanks never the less.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

I agree. This was amazing. I was also blown away by the gains. I remember seeing people gain 30 yards with the RBZ..... Trackman confirmed. It really did change the 3 wood game. TO see something pick up more yards over that is spectacular

As someone who has gained the RBZ 3 wood and am no gaming the M2 fairway, I am glad that my assumptions based on ball flight were confirmed: the M2 is longer than the M2, and it's because it launches higher and spins less.

Just a great article and the perfect example as to why MGS is doing things the right way

Agreed! Great write up!

Small idea... What if we put all of the Most Wanted Driver winners over the years up against each other? That would be pretty cool to me.

That's exactly what I've been calling for! Also we need to remember that the 3 wood gain is at high end tour swing speeds.

Isn't high end tour SS tests what everyone was wanting to see?  :D

If course very relevant for most of us. :) Even the 5 yard gain at the high AM speed would be nice but I'm not there either. :(

I reckon we could do a graphic of average carry, distance, accuracy, spin rates, etc. for the past 5-10 years. I'd also take it a step further, and try the same thing for irons (7 irons), hybrids and fairways and compare their figures over time.

Driver: Cobra F9 Speedback (9.0) with Fujikura Atmos 7X (Avalanche White)

3 Wood: Callaway Epic Sub-Zero (15 degrees) in Rogue Max 75g stiff shaft

Hybrid (not in play): Callaway Apex 20 degree with Kurokage 80g Stiff Shaft

Driving Iron: Wilson Staff Utility Iron 18 degree with KBS Hybrid Stiff shaft

Irons: Wilson Staff CB 4-PW in KBS 120 Stiff shafts

Wedges: Titleist Vokey SM6 - 50; Callaway MD4 - 56; Vokey SM9 - 60

Putter: Taylormade Rossa CGB

Golf Ball: Srixon Z-Star Diamond

Yesterday I took my older Callaway X-Hot Pro 3 wood in to test it against the newer XR16 Pro. What I found was around 10 yards extra distance, with a lot of it being contributed to less spin on the newer model. While the extra distance was great, I was hitting the newer model more on target which was a better deciding factor.
