Raw Irons

Recommended Posts

I am working on refinishing my irons raw and turning them into a single length set. I've been doing research and others are talking about the upkeep of a raw set. I have just not seen any details as to what they actually mean by that. I would have thought there would be little upkeep? Any please help?

Exactly that. A raw finish will rust pretty quickly if not protected. So after every round they need to be thoroughly cleaned, dried and given a wipe with oil to prevent rust. If you leave them unprotected, the oxidisation process will eat into your grooves making them less effective.

The other problem with raw sets is wear and tear. Most forged clubs are plated with chrome for a reason - not just to look pretty and prevent rust, but also because chrome is a very hard metal that prevents excess wear to the underlying and relatively soft carbon steel.

So yes - the upkeep of raw sets is a lot more intensive than a comparable chrome plated set.
