The left thumb to me. Hard to tell but it almost looks like part of it may be missing? Or it's not totally on the club and hiding beneath his right sleeve.

That's what I'm seeing - also the left hand is fairly weak.

I agree with Kenny, Matt, and Rev. Actually I thought it was a 10 finger until a few minutes ago. But after closer inspection I realize it's an overlap.

Darn... I thought I had you hackers stumped and that Old Tom was a 10 finger man like myself. LOL

I thought it was an overlap grip because of his left hand trigger finger looks like it.  However, I can't figure out what it's overlapping.  I see 5 fingers of his right hand, and the left hand isn't overlapping any of them!!

 

Rev is right.  The left hand is very weak, but the right hand is very strong.  An odd combination.

only odd in todays golf world, very natural back then and a natural way kids and newbies grip the club initially.....until we drum it out of them

It's either a ten finger grip or he has 11 fingers, it looks like the index finger on his left hand is overlapping, but there's nothing there to overlap unless he has an extra finger on his right hand. Otherwise he is just not even putting the index finger any where near the shaft.

It also looks a little bit like the Natural Golf palm grip for the right hand like Moe Norman used later in his life.

He is using the reverse overlap grip, Young Tom Morris used the same grip if you look at the monument erected after his tragic death.

I have found that of all the grips it is the most natural and the most accurate. If you have never tried it, set up with the right hand with the blade behind the ball square to target, put the left hand on naturally with the left forefinger overlapping, then swing, you’ll be amazed at how relaxed it all is. You’ll find your accuracy if you take dead aim will surprise you.
