Downhill lies

Recommended Posts

Give me some tips to conquer downhil lies.Even subtle ones.

It seems lie evensubtle downhil lies makr me push the ball a bit. Should I be playing  it forward in my stance or maybe even close the face a hair?

My course has a lot of subtle, and some not so subtle, downhill lies.  I found an area in the school area of the range where I can practice downhill lie shots.  I even had an instructor spend some time with me.  I'm better, but by no means great at it.

I don't move the ball forward.  That's a bad idea for me.  My normal shot is a fade off that lie if I don't outright chunk it.  If I move the ball forward, my tendency is to pull the ball.  When I tilt away from the target slightly like a normal shot, I hit it fat.  I have to get my shoulders parallel with the ground, and I have to keep knee flex longer through the shot.  Another problem I have is coming up out of the shot too early on the followthrough; the old body doesn't like staying down.  If I manage to do everything correctly, the result is pretty good.

With my slower swing speed, the ball is going to fly lower, and if you want a certain yardage, you might need one less club, depending on the severity of the slope.  Also, more loft makes it easier to hit that shot.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Slightly farther back in your stance, shoulders parallel with the lie hips slightly open. Make sure you swing down the line and maintain knee flex. At least that’s what I do.

This is what I've learned is the "proper" way to do it, but execution is another thing 🙂

edit: the ball will also come out lower because you take away loft, something else to account for

^^This

plus on a steeper slope you will be using all arms and very little body

Probably why I have trouble with these shots; an over active body.  You'd think at my age, that wouldn't be a problem.

As ZIPR said - for a downhill lie the ball slightly back in the stance; the opposite is true for uphill but the main thing is shoulders parallel to the lie - this is absolutely critical. The quieter body is also really important but there is very little chance you will hit the ball solid if your body is not in the proper position in terms of the lie.

Make sure the club head follows the slope of the turf during and after contact.

Short slices and topped balls are a product of swinging your normal flat lie swing.

Pretty much exactly what I would have said. It may require a wider stance to maintain balance while getting your shoulders parallel with the slope, but this ^^^^ is what you need to do IMO. It's likely on more severe slopes that you will lose your balance as you complete the follow through and have to take a step towards the target in order to stay upright, but by that point the ball should be well on it's way.

I decided to sleep in and cancel my te time this morning instead of walking a hilly course. I did play my home course tonight and had an almost identical shot as the one that got this thread started. I took a club less, played it farther back, and swung down the line, wirh a low follow through. Right online and 15 above the stick instead of my normal push from that particular shot.

AReally make sure you adjust your spine angle with the grade of the lie and really focus on maintaining that spine angle throughout your swing. I've always found the best way to practice is to find any area with a similar slope and begin simply with half swings until you're more comfortable, then work your way up! Keep in mind also since your club will slightly de-loft naturally the trajectory will be lower and there will be less spin on the ball!
