When Do You Switch Putters?

Recommended Posts

Arnold Palmer had a room in his house with over 400 putters in it.  All the putters he used in his career.  If it's good enough for him its good enough for me.<lol>  I change putters among the 6 I own whenever I struggle on the green.  I just hauled out the 50 yr old Bullseye this morning and played 18 holes with it.  Shot a 77 and 30 putts and no 3 putts.  Yesterday used my Tour Edge mallet and had 4,3 putts.   For me sometimes just changing it up helps.

I got fit for an Edel about 6 years ago and it's been in my bag about 3/4 of that time. However, I occasionally tinker with a Tei3 Santa Fe (Just a hair too light), a Truss TM 2 which stayed in for about 6 months and did pretty well - which was a surprise to me. I've got a Sik Flo with Stability shaft which saw a few months action around Christmas.

I kept coming back to the Edel - knowing it was fitted gave me that extra bit of confidence. But, I missed the forgiveness of the Truss and Sik so I took the plunge and bought an Edel EAS 4, 2nd hand - I had the spec sheet from my original fitting so altered everything to match the other Edel as much as possible and the other putters have been put in the back of the cupboard. I'm confident this will be in my bag for a long stretch.

Hey how do you like your EAS 4.0? I have a 1.0 but always wondered if I should’ve been fit to the 4 or 5 mallet instead of blade.

I switch too often, but when you are constantly in the 33-37 range per round, why not?  Seriously, if it's trending badly, I'll switch after 2 bad rounds (2.1+ putts/hole).  Or, if the greens I'm playing are fast, I'll switch to one of my heavier putters.

I am on the opposite end of the scale as most of you. I think every putter I have owned has been in my bag for 5+ years. May be to my own detriment. I also float in the 33-40 range and but will have a nine in the 13 putt range and believe in it again.

I am also in the market for one so maybe I have been losing some faith.

I really like it. My original putter was a Torque Balanced E3 and it's great, but having felt the added stability of the Truss and Sik, when I went back to E3 it felt noticeably more unstable. EAS 4 was the perfect solution. Feel off the face is good (I don't like a soft insert). It came with a weight kit so I played about on the practice green to find the best one and I've not looked back since.

Extremely rarely! I've been playing for 30+ years and I'm on my 5th putter. My current one (MLA Tour Mallet) has been in the bag since I reviewed it in 2016.  Of the other 4, one is in my daughter's bag and another is in my "holiday" bag that lives in my in-laws holiday apartment.

I don't bother really looking at other putters in stores. A quick putt or two isn't going to make me want to change.  If I was to change, it would only be after a proper fitting or extended trial.

As an aside, putting stats can be extremely misleading. Total number of putts is very dependent on how many greens you hit and how well you're chipping the ball.  3 putting from outside 40 feet isn't something that should be unexpected. I only get concerned if I'm missing a higher than usual number of putts that I can reasonably expect to make.

Considering grabbing a 4.0 as my “second” putter to my 1.0…

The putter is the one club I haven't changed in 25 years.  I'm using a ping nickel anser 2 and I still love it.

I am currently on my first putter roundabout for years and years. Had a bad couple of weeks with my Bettinardi SS38 even though I love it. Give it a little holiday and went back to a Scotty Newport Mil Spec Pro Platinum, that lasted 2 rounds then went to an old Scotty Red X3, that lasted 1 round finally went back to my fav of all time Wilson 8802 milled, tend to only use it on super fast greens but still did ok last weekend so he's getting another chance tomorrow!
