Ping iCrossover

Recommended Posts

Anybody play the Ping iCrossover for their long iron(s)? I just got one a few days ago after searching for a 4-iron replacement and I’m so happy I got it. It’s beautiful and very consistent, forgiving, and I get great distance and a good descent angle. I have a 3-hybrid I’m thinking about replacing now because I always hit hybrids too hard and low for some reason and struggle with consistency left to right.

Haven't tried the iCrossover yet, but I did pick up a used G410 crossover on the cheap late last year.  Like you I was looking for something a little more consistent in my 4 hybrid.  I only got to play it a few times before winter hit, but it was magical.  The easy high flight helped me stick a few 2nd shots onto par 5 greens that would have normally rolled through the green.

Distance wise it is a few yards shorter than my Cobra hybrid, but it makes up for that having a higher trajectory and tighter dispersion.

The 3 hybrid could be in trouble if the 4 crossover continues to perform well.

Yes, similar experience! My hybrid usually is low and runs out, so it doesn’t do well for me on approach shots. I just don’t think I’m as comfortable hitting a hybrid as I am hitting a driving/crossover iron. I’m guessing my angle of attack might be too steep and I need to better work on a more sweeping swing with a hybrid, but I’ve always hear that you should hit hybrids similar to irons in terms of ball position and swing.

The 4 iCrossover is consistently carries 205-210 for me and comes in at a much higher descent angle with more spin, so my 3-hybrid is on notice this season.

Yup I have a g410 4 crossover. It just gives that little extra pop and distance to separate better from the 5 iron compared to a traditional 4 iron.

Great call!

I’ve got a G410 4 crossover as well and I love it. It’s one of those clubs I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of. I picked up a G425 2 crossover towards the end of last season, so I haven’t had much time with it, but I’m looking forward to testing it out this year.

I would put the iCrossover at the top of the list for an off the tee iron. I have a 3 iCrossover but I’ve opted to carry a T-350 4-iron instead as it’s better to me from the fairway, and they’re identical lofts. When I go through stretches of driving poorly I definitely put the Ping in the bag though!

I was looking at an iCrossover for the exact opposite reason. Haha

I hit my 4hybrid very high, especially off the tee. So I was looking for something that would carry 200ish but stay low to get some roll out and stay under wind.

Let us know how it works out for you!

Hybrid irons are definitely supposed to fly lower than true hybrids, so I think you’re safe there. I naturally have a steep attack angle with my hybrid, but when I flatten it out I do hit it higher. I just think I’m more comfortable hitting a forgiving long iron than a hybrid.

I have far too many hybrids and driving irons lol.

Hybrids: Higher launch. Versatile off the tee, fairway, and rough.
- Currently have a SIM, Stealth, Stealth 2.

Utility irons: Low to mid launch. Great off the tee as a low fairway finder, I find them less forgiving than a hybrid from the fairway and not nearly as good from the rough.
- Currently have a Sub-70, Ping iCrossover, and T-350 that acts as a U iron. The T-350 being a GI iron is by far the best from the fairway as my descent angle hovers around 47-48.

How do you like the Sub70 utility? I live only a couple hours from their HQ and could probably hit a few different things and get fit for something.

I like it, my main con is it's not the best feeling utility iron. But it gives me a great low flight with good consistency and accuracy, plus their customer service is top notch. I would definitely put the iCrossover above it in terms of feel but it also cost over twice the price.

For the price I really appreciate what they're doing, I'd love to try some irons from them.

I didn't realize they were that close by! I'm also in Michigan.

Yes, they're based in Chicago, it's probably more like 3 hrs to their door because their HQ is on the West side of Chicago (Sycamore, IL), but it's not a bad drive along I-94 for me!

I picked up an iCrossover last year and have found it quite useful.   I have tried too many times to play a hybrid and just can't....   I don't know what it is....  I had a stretch for a month where I was decent, but nah....   Moved on to the iCrossover and I have not looked back.

I have the 3 iCrossover and I still turned it down a degree because I was hitting it higher than I wanted.  I do want to reshaft it one day as I think the Project X Red may be a contributing factor and I like something a bit more robust.   The shaft sleeve is pretty pricey.

It is a bit of a specialty club for me so it doesn't get a lot of usage.   I hit my 3 and 5 woods well and high so I wanted the iCrossover to be in the same distance range but with more of a stinger/penetrating flight.   I like the distance and accuracy, but I probably have only dropped it on a green a couple times because in that situation I am typically hitting a 5 Wood or a 5 iron.  I should try it more often off of the tee in tight situations.   I usually go 3 wood unless windy.

I do like it and I like it much more than any hybrid that I have ever tried to make work for sure!

Cool to run aross this topic today.  I just picked up a 2 iCrossover on ebay with the same shaft as my gamer irons (Axiom 105X).  Just tried it out a couple rounds this weekend.  It was awesome the few times I used it - which, surprisingly enough was scrambling out of the woods. On a par 5, I hit it out of a pinestraw lie with a strong fade punch shot to about 7 feet from 210 yards ... so, yeah, that was cool. I haven't given it its full examination yet, and definitely need to try it off the tee before giving it a permanent spot in the starting lineup.  But, yeah what others have said is what I'm hoping for - just better accuracy and consistency than what I typically get from a hybrid.

I am glad I found this thread! I have been toying with the idea of getting a crossover or utility iron. I saw the impressive performance of the iCrossover in the "Best Driving Irons 2023" but it has a pretty steep cost of entry.

I also am trying to figure out the placement of the utility iron in my bag. I am almost done with my complete bag makeover and currently have a Takhomo IGNIS 5W (turned down to 16*) and a Ping G430 Hybrid 4H (turned down to 21*). This gives me approximately 230 from my 5W and 215 from my 4H. I haven't had either club for very long so not sure on off-the-tee performance, but they seem to have solid gapping and coverage at the top of the bag.

My current bag make-up has me sitting at 13 clubs so I have some flexibility and would love some input from others on what they have found success and some advice. I keep toying with the idea of a utility 2 iron as a "fairway finder".

For those mentioning the G425 crossover in comparison to the iCrossover, I found this video doing an interesting comparison of the two before deciding to go with the iCrossover, myself ... and yes, the MGS testing was also very compelling in nudging me toward the iCrossover!

This club has been money for me, for long approaches (which admittedly don't happen too often, but this is a weapon when they do), scrambling out of the woods, and as of yesterday, controlled Tee-shots on a very narrow hole.  Strangely enough, when I first tried to hit this club on the range both days I've used it, I was terrible with it - couldn't get good contact the first 5-7 swings, but eventually got it figured out ... On the course, it's been 10-out-of-10.
