Early morning tee times - How early is early?

Recommended Posts

How early are you Spies allowed to tee off at your home course?

IMG_3815.jpeg.3e7da642057e836aaf2c05b142c82683.jpeg

I’m sure it varies across the country.  I have a standing 7am tee time at my home club in Iowa.  But another club I often play at doesn’t allow play before 9am (I’m sure it has to do with a small maintenance staff). Another one in Nebraska it’s 8am. Yet when I visit my daughters in Illinois I routinely see on-line tee times available as early as 5:30am.

That 5:30 is a tad early for me, but I’d love to tee it up at 6 or 6:30.

My body wakes up at 5:30 no matter what.  Sometimes I’m waiting for the alarm.  Breakfast, do the wordle, Diet Dew for the caffeine and head to the course.  I’d tee off between 6-6:30 if they’d let me.  Walk 18 in 3 hours and fifteen minutes (that means the ball is going straight that morning) and back home, showered and in the basement office by 10:30.  Clients just have to be patient until then.

Carts aren’t allowed out until 8am. Members who walk are allowed out after 7am. I’m pretty much the only person out there. I tee off at 7:30 / 7:45 and have the course to myself.

My ideal morning would be up, have a quick coffee and breakfast. Hit the course and tee off about 6:30. Finish up the round at 9:30 and enjoy a bit more coffee. Get home in time for Audrey's first nap and crash with her for an hour then enjoy the rest of the day!

Enjoy the naps while they last!  Been a while since I’ve had that and miss it!

Our Club 7am is first Tee Time, which our group has every morning. I usually walk 3 days a week with the group. There are mornings the Superintendent lets us tee off at 6:45am and we are usually done in 3hrs. That’s with 4 guys walking.  It’s great, home by 10-10:30am and back to work.

Anything before 330 in the afternoon is too early for me. I write in the morning, that’s about the only thing I like to do at that time of day. I was reminded of that yet again at around 10 AM when I hit balls into the backyard net after a breakfast meeting - 4 mph slower with driver than the evening before.

You guys can have this morning tee times - I like walking down the 18th in semi darkness - always have.

While not at the same time I was fit for every club in my bag as well as the Pro VI ball. I use the chrome soft x ls on my league course.  It has much softer softer greens than the club that I belong to.

No such thing as too early!

Totally agree!

First tee time is perfect. 3 hr 15 min rounds.

i do think it’s a but too early when your first shot is basically in the dark.  Hard to find the ball even in the fairway.  It gets better very quickly at dawn.

Our first spring/summer tee times are 7 am on 2 of the 3 courses. 3rd course varies from 10am or 12 pm to keep the turn smooth.

On weekends they open the 3rd course for a short rotation for 9 hole players only from 7 to 10.

We have the regular players there at 6-630 on the putting greens. Range opens at 7am

Winter opening tee times vary depending on maintenance and daylight.

Sometimes depends on the course. @TriciaPug and I play Mountain Dell in Utah and it was still dark when we tee's off because it is nestled between two mountains and the sun was blocked until the second or third hole. Today was our earliest tee time of the year, 7:20 ... as we were teeing off, there was a group coming off on 9 ... and I am not even sure that was the first group out for the day. It was a nice time to start and thinking that we might starting scheduling some as the dog days of come up.

To answer the question,  fall, winter, and spring months, anytime is fine with me for a tee time. Summertime I will never get an early tee time,  as our course offers public membership levels, and the platinum regulars swallow up most of the weekday tee times up until 10 am. By then, the day is already hot amd humid, so anytime is the right time for me!

Ditto. I enjoy teeing off as early as possible. A little dew still on the greens and some cool air is just the best. Plus, being able to get some before noon and having the whole day still ahead of you is ideal.

I get out and play at sun up multiple times a week.  It's normally just before 6:30 and I love it!  As @GolfSpy_KFT mentioned, dew on the ground, quiet and nothing between you and 18 holes.  I would love to say a chill in the air but who am I kidding, it's already 78 and the sun hasn't come up yet.  😆

I can finish by 8:30/8:45 and get home in time to shower and go get my work done.  I'm up by 5am anyways and might as well take advantage of the day.

This would have been back in the early 1960's. My Dad's best friend was a dentist and had a son my age. My Dad was a local pharmacist who had to work Saturdays so he got Wednesday's off. In the summer the four of us would often go to the local tennis courts that had lights that you turned on with a quarter. We would go play doubles tennis way before sunrise and play until daylight. Then we would go play 18 holes of golf and my Dad's best friend would be able to make a 10:30 a.m. appointment that day. Good times.

And anyone who has played true early morning golf in the midwest knows what a 'roster tail' is on the golf course.

We get to the club early, but often have breakfast first so the start isn't hideously early.

Weekday morning golf requires no reserved tee times at our club.   We can have breakfast,
make up the pairings and type of game that we want to play, and then just play.

I personally have no preference about time of day for playing, as long as it's not on weekends.
Things get too regimented then.  I'd rather just read the paper or a magazine on the sundeck.

I absolutely love to tee off at sunrise, so relaxing. Yesterday’s round was a 5:30 am start and the only other person on course was the employee mowing the greens.

Depends on the time of year… in late fall, winter, and early spring I like tee times closer to noon because it’s warmer and the early guys are done.  Once it warms up in the spring and through early fall, I like tee times around 7-7:30am to beat the heat and the great unwashed crowd that munis attract..

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I think an ideal tee time is an hour before the rush of foursomes start, so i guess it kinda depends on the course. I would say an exact time 630-730
