Got another round in today but matched my score of 73.  Game is really starting to fall in to place and I'm liking where the game is headed.

Played this evening but couldn't beat my 78 from Monday, came in with a respectable 81. Score pretty much ruined by 3 doubles

  • 4th pull my approach, leaving me with a chip to the left of the greenside bunker, tried to be too cute and ended up in the bunker. Out and 2 putts for a 7
  • 9th drove into fair bunker off the tee, 150 yds in and thought I could make it with a 7i, hit the face and landed in the next fairway bunker, hit the face with my next shot, hit the green in 4 and 2 putts for a 6.
  • 11th hit a greenside bunker, out and 3 putted for a 5.

When I analyse this the first 2 were mental errors, with a little bit of thought and care I should have been at worse bogey or even par. I also highlights how bad I am out of bunkers, I never really practise out of bunkers so maybe that is something else I should look at.

You should always make bunker practice as part of your normal range day...amazing what it does...

Fun new to me course.   Challenging layout, not as awesome conditioning.  Yet they still had great tiny little greens.

Good point,  in this case it could have saved me at least a couple of strokes, the 2 fairway bunker shots were just me being greedy and trying to go for the green when too near the lip.

The club have just put in a new practise bunker and not made a good job of it, it has loads of sand but you can quite easily hit the bunker liner and it bears little to no resemblance to the on course bunkers which tend to be hard packed with a thin layer of sand on top.

I guess this is what golfing in the zone feels like. I was able to clear out the noise and concentrate on just my shot. I executed more often than not. My around the green play was stellar, if I do say so myself, leaving me with opportunities for two putts or one putts. I even included a photo of my encounter with some of the local nature. Not poisonous btw.

Up and down day but our team did win the gross money and the birdie pool too with 6 total team birdies. I came out on top for the week because I won money all 3 days I played. Was more in scrapping mode was more concerned on the team thing instead of my score. Played conservative some and went at it some. Not really conducive to posting a lower score

Played fairly well consider it was with an almost completely new bag.  1 birdie 4 bogies and a double.  Only managed 6 fairways but only in trouble once. Did have 10 greens which was good with the low fairways.   40/37

Started the round with SO much promise - three drives absolutely mashed (for me) 270+ and in the fairway.  Longest was 285 down the middle on the 2nd hole, had 48 yards to the pin, and hit a perfect little 56-degree to 8 feet and made the putt for birdie. That was definitely the highlight, scoring-wise.  Driver kept behaving through the front 9, but got a little loosey-goosey on the back, and I lost a few both left and right, the “left” miss being a bit of a surprise, as my miss is almost always to the right.

Iron play was “okay” at best - still doing something where I’m kind of ‘swiping’ at them, adding a lot of right-spin and losing distance.  It’s not every shot, but seemingly only the ones where I’m feeling confident about sticking it close, lol.

Putting was … meh (30 putts).  One 3-putt, which was just plumb bad, but a lot of 2-putts where the ball COULD have decided to drop were it not being a jerk 🙂 It's crazy how if a few of the ones that NEARLY dropped had actually gone in, I might've felt a lot better about the round 🙂 Stupid game we love, eh?

Best shot of the day, easily, was on 18.  Pulled my drive left, where I had about 145 left, but a tree limb blocking me out from hitting a full 9.  So instead, I pulled a 7-iron, and hit a 3/4 shot with the ball back in my stance - came out INCREDIBLY: low and powerful - landed on the fringe and trickled to about 12 feet to the back of the green.  JUST missed the birdie putt, but honestly, was thrilled with par from where I was off the tee.

Something of note: I’ve been losing weight over the last few months (down 50+ since starting the program in April), and with the heat we’ve been experiencing, walking the course has led to a LOT of fatigue starting on the back-9.  Well, I’ve been carting it since about May, but decided to walk yesterday, as the heat finally broke (from 110+ to 82 and perfect), and I felt AWESOME through 9 holes.  On the 9th green, my legs started cramping (not awesome), and then I could just feel the energy start to sap at about 12.  I did ensure I had protein bars and an apple while on course (one of each), and two giant thermoses full of water, but it just wasn’t enough to keep me from slogging.  I know 90% of the energy loss is just due to my super disinterest in food (I’m using a prescription medication for weight loss, fwiw), and often have to remind myself to eat (which, if you know me, you’ll understand is a HUGE departure from the “normal Matt”), so ultimately, I’ve made the decision to keep using a cart for my rounds until I’m back on a more normalized diet, and then I’ll be back to using the push-cart.

Anyway, while I’d LOVE to attribute the string of bogies on the back 9 strictly to fatigue, I’m sure getting into awkward spots off the tee didn’t help 🙂

When I hit it well, it’s effortless.  But when I forget to fire those hips, bad things happen 😉

Until next week (when I’m playing twice)!

The driver was on target today as I played the back tees to get yardage ready for a tournament coming up in a month.  14 / 15 FIR, 15 / 18 GIR.  I started horribly with a 4 putt double bogey.  Then I went 2 birdies and 2 bogeys, the rest pars for the next 17 holes for a 2 over 74. Lots of birdie looks from about 15' and lots of edges burned!

Sloppy round really. I walked today.. and it's has been a min.. definitely had no legs towards the last 5-6 holes.

4 lips outs that really should have gone in.

I only had time for 2 nines this week so I combined them for this score. Back 9 at Reid Golf Course on Wednesday and back 9 at Royal St Patrick’s on Friday. Averaged the ratings and slopes to get blended numbers. Struggling the last couple of weeks with putting scores together. Driver is horrible right now as I am in the middle of a swing change and have no consistent shot shape.
