Looking to add a 7 wood

TCUfrog

Recommended Posts

I'm currently contemplating re-doing the top end of my golf bag. My current set up is:

  • Driver - TaylorMade Qi10 (260 Carry)
  • 3 Wood - Cobra RadSpeed (245 Carry)
  • 3 Hybrid - TaylorMade Sim2 (220 Carry)
  • 4 Hybrid - TaylorMade Sim2 (205 Carry)
  • 5 iron - JPX920hm Pro (205 Carry)

I'm thinking of dropping the 4 Hybrid and adding in a 7 or 5 wood with my current gapping above. Has anyone done anything similar with their bag?

I have a 25° 7-wood left over from the very early days of metalwoods
when 21° clubs were were still 5-woods.

It's a Spalding Top Flite Intimidator 400 Ti model,
it has a totally irreplaceable shaft because of its fat (.400") tip,
and it's still an outstanding golf club from almost any lie,  muddy divot to paved cart path.

If I could bag as many clubs as I wanted, it would still have a place in my bag.

So put me down as a "yes" on the 7-wood concept.
Hybrids, while obviously working well for many, never worked well for me.

For some strange reason, "TCU Frog" reminds me of the Hogan FW15 club from about nine years.

Maybe FW stood for Fort Worth, although I'm not sure.

It did! I'm still hoping that Hogan will be resurrected fully after shuttering it's doors a while ago. I tested the Hogan Hybrid a few years ago on the forum. It wasn't for me, but my wife has started to play and is learning to like the Hogan VKTR Hybrid.

I've got an Aerojet Max 7w and it is very good. Just put a heavier and stiffer shaft into it to counter what has been an overdraw and it has made it much more controllable. I truly wouldn't hesitate to add one.

I carry the HL 3W at 16.5 degrees, so technically a 4 wood, and then have a 21 degree 7W, 24 hybrid and so on and the 7 wood is such a versatile club, I love it! I still carry a 4H but rarely hit it unless I need something low, just haven't gotten anything else to replace it--thinking maybe another wedge at bottom of the bag for flops and bunkers

If I could swap my Max for the standard, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Really like the Max, but the draw bias is no joke!

I ended up lofting my 7w down to try and help it a bit. That plus this heavier and stiffer shaft is so far turning it into an even better club.

I know it's not what you specifically asked, but looking at your numbers, taking out the 4 hybrid or 5 iron would make sense. I'd look to the bottom of your bag as your distance gapping at the top looks neat already. How is your wedge gapping?

I previously had a Callaway Rogue ST Max 7-wood and now have a Titleist TSR2 7W. I wanted the adjustable hosel to play with lie and loft. The TSR2 is a phenomenal 7- wood. Until recently it was my most reliable club by a good margin, but now it's about level with my new driver. The launch is great and descent angle like a 7-iron. I can also punch it lower and get almost-5-wood distance.

I kept my 3 hybrid and delofted that from 19.5* to 18* and use it as more of a driving iron replacement.

I can't imagine not carrying a 7-wood now.

Good luck with your search and tests.

If you liked the Aerojet, try the LTDx instead. I have the LTDx and find it to be an amazing fairway wood. Looks and sound are great, results are amazing. Plus it is cheap right now through both Cobra and the other retailers. I now have a 7, 5 and 3 wood in that club with great results. Could not hit a hybrid to save my life, and a 4 iron is a crap shoot with me. 7 wood is a confidence club, can and will hit it anywhere but deep rough. Good luck.

@TCUfrog did you hit any 7 woods after all?

There is something magical about that club. I was in search of a club for my 205 gapping and found a used old cobra cheap at a local golf shop that was hitting the number on their LM. That was the best $89 I have spent thus far in golf and couldn't ever imagine taking the 7 wood out of the bag.

I've of late come to the conclusion that two woods are enough, leaving room for other clubs I might need.

Driver, mini-driver, or 2-wood
(to share tee-box duty with my driving iron)
is one of them.

Heavenwood is the next.
It flies high and far.

How many greens would I realistically hit from further out than Heavenwood distance?
Would a 15 or 16.5° club for "Hail Mary" shots (which, of course, is what they would be)
really provide more practical utility than another club that I could bag instead?

It really wouldn't seem so.

I guess that depends on what else you’d put in the bag…and would that club bring value? If there’s nothing else you need, then a ‘hail Mary’ club would be fine, no?

I'm replacing my 3w & 5w with a 4w to go along with a 7w and either a regular hybrid or the Mizuno Fli-Hi hybrid/iron replacement to match my JPX923 HMP's. The 3w & 5w were going the same distance. Just got fitted for a PXG BO 4w that's going about 13 yards farther than either of the other two. So I'll either go that route or look at other 4w options.

I’m using a vintage Taylormade Tour Cleek 27* 7 wood that I’ve had since new.  Compared to new clubs it’s small, but I love it. It’s got rails on the bottom and it’s great for hitting out of thick rough, bunkers, and easy to hit from the short grass.

If he brings you to it, he’ll bring you through it!
