2018 Official Forum Member Review - PING i500 Irons

I love this You give a group of guys a set of clubs, tell them to enjoy, and what happens....everyone walks a different road experiencing different joys along that path but we all end up meeting at a common spot or in this case... a common theme. myself ... I was not impressed with the clubs with the exception of the 6i. the wedge I did not like due to the fact that I could get 20 yard spread in distances and hence the lack of trust. need to combine with my set? Then you have STUDque that just raves about the GW and the ability to perform a variety of shots, GC70 doesn't want to play them Kanoito struggled with toe hits so he's still in the figuring it out. Mr. Theo enjoyed the 4i distance and trajectory but also needs more on course testing for an further evaluation. So if i am not mistaken the common theme is that so far no one is enamoured with the i500's saying "Wow, I'm playing these from now on" but still more testing is needed in order to complete the journey.6 points -

Nice recap, Har. One thing that might have helped me was if I got these in July, so I could really get better comparisons. The PW is just no good for me. Maybe it needs the loft and lie checked out. I feel bad for Ping and all the GolfSpys, that I really couldn’t test them out the way I wanted. I did play them enough to know that they won’t be in the starting lineup in 2019. I will definitely test them again against my gamers. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy4 points

In an effort to provide a little more flair to the forum, we're going to start a catalog for profile badges. These will not replace the Donor badge and you don't need to be a Donor to be eligible to add these to your profile. This listing will be updated as new badges are introduced. If you'd like one added to your profile just comment here or send a PM to one or two of the following mods: @GolfSpy_APH. Being a game of honesty, please only request that which you honestly deserve.. Users are allotted a Donor Tag + 2 items from the catalog Countries: Groups: Professions: Milestones: Earn-able (exempt from limits): If you have an idea for something new, just add a comment on this thread (doesn't hurt if you do some of the design work yourself). PSA- For those requesting a 2019 tester badge: These are added once you complete and post your Stage 2 reviews.3 points -
I was thinking the same thing Har, I just love the honesty of the reviews and I love that it shows just how different all of us are. One thing I think people should take from all of this is reading reviews is an excellent source of information about clubs but (and it's a Kardashian size but) you have to get out and try clubs before buying or dismissing them3 points

Hi Jason, I think you are spot on about looking into your driver. We have commonly found that once someone gains a good amount of speed as you have their current driver no longer is suitable for them. Spin often increases too much. The amount of speed you have gained with each SuperSpeed clubs has been outstanding and if it isn't transferring over that is the first place to look. Do you know how much your current driver weighs in total? Down the line you may also want to look at doing a ball fitting as that can change too. The good thing is that it is the off season so it is a good time for you to focus on speed and then as the spring hits you will be better suited to take this new speed to the course. One other test you could try is to measure some max out driver swings using the radar but not hitting a ball. Let us know how those numbers look. Kyle3 points -

definitely. Aside from the plans that MGS have, I was impressed with the fact that they give 20 tags and you can compare clubs from different manufacturers. as I am testing the Ping i500's, I want to get data so i can get a good comparison with my MP 25's.3 points -
Was 3 over with 3 to play when darkness called it. Did hit a couple of bombs (for me). Career long on 1 and the drives on 13 and 14 were both out there - had 180 into the green on 14 which is 471 on the card - pin and tees were up though. Probably 250, I was right next to a guy who is normally 250-270 on that one. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy3 points

Week 8 is officially over for me. My numbers have been pretty consistent the last few weeks, I guess that has to do with this being a plateau phase. That, and adding the kneeling swings into the mix. Daisy from SuperSpeed said this was to be expected. My kneeling swings have gotten better, my highs this week were 88, 89, and 80 on my dominant side and 80, 81, and 76 non dominant. I'm actually just a hair faster with the medium club than my light. I played a round earlier today and took the swing radar with me to get some numbers on course. I'm disappointed that I'm not seeing the numbers on the course that I'm getting at the range. I had a high today of 94 and a low of 87. I recorded eight drives and only averaged 90 mph. I don't know if this is the mental part of the game in that I'm trying to control where my drives are going and limiting myself on speed. I did hit a 3 wood 208 off the deck according to Arccos, a new record! Maybe I need to ditch the driver. I am noticing that my driver is ballooning, I hit em high and not far. I probably need to get a new one as I think mine might spin too much. Daisy recommended getting fitted for a new one, but after getting new irons a couple of months ago that's a little over budget. I did use TrueFit that My Golf Spy has put out and got recommended for a Srixon z765 that I might look into as you can find them used at a reasonable rate. I know it's not a fitting, but $300 plus is quite a bit to have to shell out this close to Christmas. I'm going to hit the range again on Sunday to see if there's been any change there. I do feel like I can swing more freely when there's not trees to hit into. Sent from my SM-G955U using MyGolfSpy mobile app3 points -

LOL Somebody is on top of the new badge thing. As you can see. I requested the above badge but got a Broke 80 badge instead. I broke 80 100 years ago but have never broken par. I think I will if I can figure out how to get out of my way. Came within 2 strokes this past summer. I suppose now that I have that Broke 80 badge staring at me I'll have to go get the job done or live with the Broke 80 badge.2 points -
I was there. Definitely a huge loss for their CFP chances. Still like them vs. Memphis and have to wait and see on bowl game. I expect a medical redhirt year for Milton in 19 then a possible senior season in 20.2 points

That defense has been exposed since Rutgers. It works against crappy teams. But get a team with a pulse and it’s useless. I’m over it. 20 years of losing to a rival. It really isn’t a rivalry game anymore. It’s just that game on the schedule that you dread. Next year won’t be any different.1 point

I really wouldn't mind trying a 4,5 iron in the i500 to see if I can get a bit extra distance out of those clubs. I still love the i210, but something with a few more yards could help with dispersion a bit.1 point -

Have to admit this surprises me; I assumed that you would have broken par. I haven't broken 70, but have beaten par a few times. Handicap is going the wrong way and I am not back on my mission to regularly break 80.1 point

I used multifocal contacts for two years and loved them, but as I needed more help up close, I started to lose a bit at distance, especially when driving at night. I went back to normal contacts this year and use readers for up close. Depending on how much close correction you need, they can be a great thing. I’m not sure exactly, I’ve read in blues lore it meant leaving town. And while Elmore James version and his famous slide guitar riff is the most well known of that song, Robert Johnson recorded it 15 years before Elmore James. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk1 point

I can comment on trajectory and spin as well. The ball flight is high but piercing - the wind has much less affect than my previous set which has a lot to do with spin but I can also flight the ball easily. As far as spin is concerned - I have zero problems with holding greens whether it is a long, middle or short iron. A tremendous amount has to do with strike and your particular move into the ball. I have no problems hitting partial shots and full. What's interesting is in dry testing reviews I have seen people comment on the spin only to have them perform as needed when playing on the course. In Mark Crossfield's initial review he commented on the low spin being a problem but in a latter video with Dan he did a head to head with the P790 and he commented how the playability was there and spin wasn't a problem. That has been my experience as well. I've only flown one green and that was due to not knowing the clubs well enough. I was playing into a pretty good headwind (@ 15 mph) and I thought the wind would affect the ball but it really didn't. Of course the mantra - "get fit!" stands and then play them. James Robinson just did a video asking "How long does it take to get used to new clubs" and the answer is it's different for everyone but his point was to play them - get to know them. I hardily agree. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Thanks a lot guys for the kind words and encouragement. I have been a long time lurker but just recently joined. I was very active in several other forums that I'm sure many of you guys are too but 4 years ago I was in a very serious car accident. In 2015, I had two back surgeries: a microdiscectomy in February and a fusion in October. At the time of the accident I was playing to a +3 using blades from a Japanese company by the name of Saqra. They are the INB-1150 irons - designed by Niimi Kiyonari, a man who worked for Epon for many years. They are Endo forged - beautiful clubs. MGS had an article on them that Tony Covey wrote in August of 2013. I just tell you that to give you an idea about me and where I am coming from when sharing my thoughts about the i500's. I have played mostly blades: Founders Club 200 series, Mizuno MP 14, etc. But I have also played Ping through the years (I have been playing for 27+ years), in fact my first set of clubs were Ping Eye's followed by Ping Zing's and the the last set where i3+ Blades. It's weird that I have gone from blades back to Ping and back again. I would have continued with my Saqra's if it had not been for my accident. I played golf for a few months after the first surgery and it was almost like I had never stopped. My game really didn't suffer much, other than being rusty and I thought things would go back to normal. Then I had the fusion and I really didn't play golf for the last two years. I have been in too much pain and honestly it just wasn't important to me. This year I started to really want to play again and when I started this season I found I just didn't have the distance I once did and I wanted a bit more forgiveness. I had the Modus 130's in my irons and I still played a tour issue SLDR and it just felt as though everything was a bit too demanding. When the i500 came out, I got really excited - I really like the clean, blade-like appearance with all the forgiveness under the hood. I was in Phoenix on vacation when the i500 was released and I wanted to go for a fitting there at Ping HQ but I wasn't able to do it. I came home and was fitted and it was exactly what I was looking for. I ended up blue dot with Modus 105 S and a G400 LST. The driver is ridiculously easy to hit compared to the SLDR but that is another review When I received my irons I was elated - I couldn't wait to get them out on the course but my first few times playing them the results were mixed to say the least. I was struggling with the drop in static weight when compared to my gamers and I had a hard time finding my stride. I had opted for less weight in the shaft because I found that easier to swing than gamers but it took some time to acclimate myself. I also struggled with the feel of them - it wasn't just that they didn't have the soft, forged feel but they didn't feel like Ping's either. I'm not sure that makes sense or not but Ping has always had a particular feel to them in my estimation. Something familiar and the i500 did not. The other thing is that the i500 want to go high and straight and I like to hit knock-downs and work the ball a bit and I hadn't had much success in doing that. But I was determined and after a few weeks of adjustment, I am hitting my stride! I typically play at one of the municipal golf courses in my area. I live in Oklahoma City and the best muni (IMHO) is Lincoln Park West. On the first of October I played from the Championship Tees (6137) and I hit 15 GIR's including every green on the back nine for a 3 under 68! I was able to hit knock downs and control the ball in the wind (which was 15-20) and I finally felt comfortable. The standard shot for these is high and straight but they are able to be worked when needed and the feel is all their own. I have had no issues with face welds as some others have but the finish is easily marked which is a bit disappointing. I have had no issues with holding greens, although in fairness, it has been an extremely wet summer/fall. I apologize if this is a bit long winded and if there any questions any of you may have or if you would like to see any pictures, please let me know. Terry1 point
