  2. Well friends, it's looking like Sally is going to interrupt my original plan, so I wanted to go ahead and get you my first on-course assessment. After 5 consecutive hours of Zoom calls, I snuck out for a quick 9. I wasn't the only one with this plan and there was a group behind me, or else I would have tried to set up my tripod and record some shots. Maybe next time Walking up to the first tee completely cold and typically I need about 3 holes for my swing to loosen up and my distances to come up to baseline. I tried to take that into consideration but, well, you'll see... Nothing of note on #1 other than I tried to hit PW uphill to a back flag and absolutely spun the cover off it, down to the bottom tier of a really big green complex. Yay, 3-putts... #2 is the 3 handicap. It needs a great tee shot and then you have to navigate a 3-tiered green with some wicked slopes. Sets up great for a little baby draw and, well, I hit two 8s that both gently fell to the right and ended up 18 inches apart, both right next to their ballmarks. When I'm warmed up, my 8i is a pretty standard 140-145, so a cold 142 caught my attention. #3 is a tricky par 3 with a brutal right to left slope and always plays a half to full club longer. Based on the last hole, I decide not to club-up. Good thing... #4 is a sharp dogleg with a hill that will roll any drive that tries to cut the corner. Oops... too close to hit the D7 this time! But it's hard to be mad about a 3-foot birdie putt. #5 starts a stretch that takes driver out of your hands (arguably I shouldn't use driver on #4 either). Really poor 4w that missed the fairway and nestled down into the Bermuda rough. 9i said, "I got this." Powered right through with no issue. I might have eased up just a bit for fear of blasting over the green, which is death. Ended up on the (correct) back tier with about 25 feet for bird and left it on the lip. #6 par three that needs a draw. It's basically a cliff long and right and a hill left will feed misses back to the green. Hit two shots; the first was just long but straight and the second I tried to hit a sweepy draw and over-cooked it (good sign in terms of workability). I'm now warmed up and squarely in the "yeah, these are long" camp. But honestly, I think most of the distance gains are from a lowered ball flight. #7 is typically a 4-iron off the tee. 215 runs through the fairway and unless you're feeling really good about a sharply-hooked driver, the green isn't driveable. I decide to back off to a 5-iron, trying to leave myself a PW in. This does not go to plan. But man does it feel good. Then my sucked back too far and I missed what should have been an easy birdie. #8 is a real SOB. Par is a great score here. With a great drive, you've still got a mid-to-long iron uphill to a 3-tiered green. According to Arccos, I hit this GiR about 20% of the time compared to my overall average of 50% GiR. Based on my approach yardage, I would have pulled 5 iron in my Ping set, to a front flag. I hit 6 and it one-hop and stops. #9 is a three-shot par 5 with a big uphill drive, downhill layup, then uphill approach. Toe-y drive and then a slightly toe-y 8i. Then thinned a PW. Dropped another ball and hit it decently well, but pulled. Dropped a third ball and landed it within a foot of the second ball. At least the irons are consistent Once Sally clears out (Saturday? ish?) I'll get back out there and hopefully shoot some video. But for now, it looks like I can reliably plan on ~10 more yards with equivalent stopping power and a much, much lower ballflight.

  3. The same team won both halves of league, so they are the league champs. Tonight would have usually been a knock down round. We all played a sort of scramble format............. first three hole was a two man scramble. Second three holes was alternate shot. Third three holes was best ball. My brother and I won first place! We won $30.00 a piece. It paid for cart and beer... and then some...lol.

Hey, probably unnecessary, but I want to extend a quick apology and explanation to the community. I've been a lot less active for the past couple of weeks than I was for the bulk of the summer, and I want to make sure I don't give anyone the impression I took my test Honma driver and ran. I'm assigned to USSTRATCOM, and no phones are allow in the building (classified stuff going on) and a lot of websites are firewalled from the work computer, including MGS. Over the summer i was temporarily assigned to a training course that went 100% online due to COVID, so i got to spend a lot of time at home and was then able to get on the forums a ton. With no access during the day, I get home to 3 little kids and those "demands" and suddenly I am dead tired and i haven't gotten on here. Sorry about that. I'm still around, still lurking, still posting a little bit, and still loving the community, and I'll step my game up. My club championship is this Saturday, after which i launch my offseason training plans that I'll document here. Again, maybe an unnecessary post, but i REALLY don't want to risk the impression that I took a test club and ran. Oh, and @B.Boston congrats on the Cobra Connect Challenge win...eases the sting of that .1 fantasy "beatdown"!

    #COBRACONNECT Challenge 4

So... I came in Dead Last... even losing to the guy who withdrew with 2 weeks left. That clearly wasn’t my best performance. Oh well, I still had a blast with this challenge. We’ve got so many great member who contribute to this thread year in and year out, too many to name, but y’all should know how much we appreciate you. Somehow, even with a significant swing rebuild, and coming in a verrrrrrrry distant last, I still managed to drop my handicap 1.4. That not nearly as much as our newly crowned champion @B.Boston, but it’s still very respectable. Baseline New average Coming into this challenge, my goals were; 1. More Speed, Less dispersion. Doesn’t that sound like the magic formula to lower scores? Well, seeing as this is my first set of properly fitted clubs, I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility. 2. I want the transition from player’s irons to player’s distance irons to be smooth. Sure, I’ll take extra distance, however, what I really want is more forgiving and accurate clubs that don’t sacrifice much playability. Cobra promises that with the Forged Tec, and I’m super excited to see if they pulled it off. 3. I’ll say it, Cobra wedges have been overlooked for years. I want them to live up to the quality of the rest of their line of clubs. I’m talking great feel, great versatility around the greens, good spin rates, and consistency on full shots. The MIMs are beautiful, now they just need to perform beautifully. Let’s answer these questions! 1. My decent swings are certainly longer with the SZ, and the dispersion is the same as my old driver. So anytime you can pick up distance without losing accuracy is a win in my book. 2. Welp, almost my entire handicap drop came from better approach play. Seriously, these irons a legit, try them out. I don’t think I need to say much more about that. 3. Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes. I’m in love with these wedges. I can’t say one bad thing about them, even my playing partners are saying how much better my chipping looks. And I’ve hit some Phil level Phlops with the 58°. Overall, I love the Cobra lineup. Minus some nit picky things here and there, I don’t have anything bad to say about it. Most of all, this has been an awesome challenge, and I can’t believe it is over already. Huge shoutout to my fellow competitors for making this such an amazing journey.

  8. On distance; yesterday I just played just 5 holes. And my approach was long on all 5. Today I played all 18, and my approach was long on the first 3 holes. After that I decided to club down, that worked well. So for me, these are playing at least a half club longer. As for my backswing... Damn it is short. I'll start taking yoga.

  11. It was like an early Christmas at the Chunks household today. I came home to three boxes! One contained the Lamkin grips I bought from @chisag and the other two held Spy Guy shorts I ordered on the flash sale. The white grips are going to look classy once they're installed on my Hogan's, I can't wait to see it. The shirts are great quality and super soft.

  12. My fellow Spies and ZipCore allies: I apologize that my ZipCore posts have been MIA the last couple of weeks. I was tasked with sorting through, packing and cleaning my parents home of 57 years all by myself. Then I created 30 inventory videos of everything still stored in the house in preparation for a renter. I made it through in time and now I can concentrate on golf and ZipCore again. I haven't been able to actually play much and when I did I was too tired to focus very well. I have a practice setup inside my house that I used instead. I'll create and post a video of that to share. It helps me. A couple of weekends ago I participated in an ABCD Scramble tournament. I had the honor of being our D player. The opportunity to use my 46° ZipCore arose only once (below is a video an accommodating team member made). We are 65 yards from the 18th pin, a par five. Sorry my ball hitting the green is cut off at the end. My awesome team tied for 2nd with 11 birdies.

    edingc's Work In Progress

Hard to believe #CobraConnect is over! I'm still working hard on my game, and I feel like some of the swing changes we worked on during my last lesson are starting to take hold. First, a swing video from yesterday's range session with the SpeedZone 9 iron: Some things I'm really digging about this video: Club head outside hands at shaft parallel in backswing. Left arm is much more up and not around at the top. My coach wants me to feel like Matt Wolff on the takeaway and "climb the wall" vertically with my left arm. Club shallows nicely and club face is stable post-impact (i.e. no need to flip the face closed). The last few rounds have been kind of rough due to some poor putting. Overall, the rounds have been pretty good from a ball striking point of view, but the play on the green has been a big let down. My estimated handicap has slid back up to 11, but I think some solid putting would make a big difference in that. I'm not worried as I'm feeling like my swing is coming around. There is still some work to be done with the longer clubs, where I get the face a little too open on the backswing. Additionally, I need to be mindful of how close I stand to the ball. I'm guilty of crowding the ball which really causes issues even if everything else about the swing is right. Because it's important to focus on progress, I grabbed a few frames from last year compared to this year: Lots of things to be happy about with those comparisons!

  16. Everything in staying except maybe the hybrid. I’ll use my old hybrid for a few rounds to see what the stats look like and if there’s less left tendency. Irons are staying for a looonnnnnggg time. Nearly holed this one today

  17. I did some testing on the range today and will be dropping the SpeedZone 4 Iron in favor of my Tour Edge Exotics CB Pro Tungsten 3 Iron with a Recoil graphite shaft. Both are 19 degrees. I don't hit the SZ 4 iron considerably further than the SZ 5 iron from the tee (and certainly not from the ground). Playing around with my Mevo I was able to get about 210 carry out of the TE Exotics on a good strike, which is just enough to better fill the gap between my 17 degree hybrid and 5 iron from the tee. There are two tee shots on my home course that need about 215-225 with roll and they really can't be longer or shorter or else you're stuck dealing with trees. I attribute the difference to the graphite shaft in the TE Exotics. Something I may look into with the SZ 4 iron is putting in a graphite shaft in it. The head shape is a little more forgiving and launches a lot higher than the TE Exotics. Both were clear winners against my Cobra F8 22 degree hybrid, but my swing wasn't particularly great today so I may revisit that in the future.

  19. We all know it gets harder to drop those points as you get lower. To drop like that over 8 weeks is nothing to sneeze at! I can only hope to one day have a fighting chance against the kid in a heads up match. I’ve still got a little way to go before. I’d probably still look like Brady out there against Phil and Tiger if I tried now. I can’t agree more with the irons and wedges. I too and mmmm super impressed. Long and consistent distance. I don’t think I had one go screaming over the green that couldn’t be attributed to a swing fault or flier lie. Good luck out there kid... no doubt you’ll be a plus handicap sooner than later.

  20. So first and foremost, between @Thin2win and @MattF, if I do any videos or pictures with me in them, I'll need to step up my hat game. I hoped to get out on the range or the course while my daughter was in another class tonight. But they were short a coach, so I stepped in. She and I played the pitch-n-putt course after class, so I grabbed the gap wedge and putter and headed out. Let's be frank, this isn't really a wedge. It's an 11 iron. It's a very nice 11 iron, and I hit several really good full shots with this 11 iron last night. It's not a shovel like the gap wedge from my old Mizuno MX-200 set, but it's definitely another iron in the set. From left: Mizuno MX-200 (shovel), Wilson D7 Forged (11 iron), Cobra King F8 (gap wedge) From left: Cobra King F8 (gap wedge), Wilson D7 Forged (11 iron), Mizuno MX-200 (shovel) So while full shots with the D7 are great, it really doesn't like being opened up a little, choked up a little or taking a little off of it. Now here's the question, do I really care? I mean, I can hit a Sand Wedge instead. I really don't hit anything but full shots with a gap wedge unless that's the only club I'm carrying. But if that's an issue for you, you might not want to buy the gap wedge. Brief tangent - I really liked with Cobra did with the F8 wedges, but I suppose that wasn't popular enough. Let's look at sole width From left: Adams Idea A12OS, Cobra King F8, Wilson D7 Forged, Titleist AP1, Mizuno MX-200, Maltby TS2, Hogan Apex Grind, MacGregor Muirfield The D7 really isn't any narrower than the F8 it's replacing, and it's a little wider than my older daughter's AP1. If you're looking for a wide platform, don't rule out the D7 Forged. Cobra F8 Wilson D7 Forged Cobra F8 Wilson D7 Forged Iron Loft Loft Length Length 4 19.5° 21.5° 39.50" 39.00" 5 22.5° 24.5° 38.75" 38.50" 6 25.5° 27.5° 38.00" 38.00" 7 29.5° 30.5° 37.50" 37.50" 8 34.0° 34.5° 37.00" 37.00" 9 39.0° 39.0° 36.50" 36.50" PW 44.0° 44.0° 36.25" 36.00" GW 49.0° 49.0° 36.00" 35.75" Here are the lofts and lengths. What's interesting is that I first noticed the yardage difference with the 8 iron. It's not like it was the 4 iron, where there's a big difference. Looking at the loft gapping, I really like Wilson's gapping better. I have a pretty big gap between my 6 and 7 irons with the F8s. I'm hoping the tighter loft gapping will reduce that a bit. Other than the little mishap with the range balls, I didn't think it was a bad first outing at all. I was pretty pleased.

  21. I started using a line on my ball this year and also switched putters over the winter. I always felt that I was a good putter, but it’s been really hot for me this year. I don’t three putt often and am pretty good a lag putting, but this year I’ve also rolled in some long birdie putts. Lastly, during CCC4 my proximity to pin on chips was reduced by 4 or 5 yards, so shorter putts left too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  23. The CCC4 king has been crowned! Congratulations @B.Boston on taking home the prize in a hotly contested and very entertaining competition this year. @daviddvm your ability to adjust immediately to the one lengths was nothing short of amazing. I was expecting it to take a little bit of time to figure them out, but you blew the doors off from day one. @edingc @Headhammer @GB13 you all were excellent competitors and I couldn't think of any group better to represent both MGS and Cobra Golf this year. Your reviews were all thorough and you made us all proud. A regular review takes a lot of work and Cobra Connect ratchets that up to 100 and you all excelled at it. @xOldBenKenobiX congratulations on the member prize, I can't wait to hear what you think about the SpeedZone driver and Arccos.

  24. And now, the time has come. Dare I say, this challenge has been the best one yet. It's feedback from the competitors and fans like this that have really driven the challenge to another level. Thanks to our 5 test subjects and the hundreds of regular followers in the thread. This has been a great season and we thank you for coming along for the ride. Overall Stats: @B.Boston not only steered the ship into the harbor, he did a power slide into his space with style by wrapping up the overall category running away. This was truly a dominating performance by someone who took his game to the absolute next level. Who wouldn't want to cut their handicap in half? He didn't just improve one area of his game to bring down the HC either, this is across-the-board improvement. Very impressive! It's also very fun to look at the group's improvement as everyone experienced gains in multiple aspects of their games. You're each going to be formidable opponents in your next tournament. One of the keys to this challenge's success is total buy in and our guys really delivered with a staggering 95.5 rounds amongst them. There's no such thing as protecting the handicap in this group. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Which brings us to our final standings and podium prizes: We can #cuetheduckboats for @B.Boston and his fan base. For the grand prize, he'll be bringing home a custom Cobra License Plate Trophy PLUS 1 polo, 1 pair of pants or shorts, 1 hat, 1 pair of shoes. @daviddvm produced our best ONE length showing to date with a strong second place and even spent a little bit of time in the lead of our challenge. For his prize, he'll be sporting a PUMA Golf cap, polo and pair of shoes Although he had to withdraw from the competitive piece of the challenge early, @Headhammer managed to do enough throughout his competitive weeks to get himself onto the podium still. It's interesting to think about what would've happened had he not injured his elbow. He can impress his physical therapist with his new PUMA Golf cap and Polo I would be remiss if I didn't also acknowledge @GB13 and @edingc for their gallant efforts and detailed reviews throughout the process. I hope you guys enjoyed the challenge as much as the fans enjoyed heckling you! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - And our last prize of the day....the member of the thread. This one isn't always an easy choice but for CCC4, the decision was clear. We chose someone that participated day in day out, asked tons of questions, spammed the memes, and competed in each weekly challenge. You know him, you love him, (you may be slightly annoyed by him); this year's winner is: @xOldBenKenobiX Congrats! Shoot me a PM to claim your grand prize of a Cobra SPEEDZONE Driver and Arccos for the full set. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - THE END. HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.

  30. ... I don't think it is ego as much as an annoyance. With so many really good irons out there right now, I get Wilson might need to do something to separate themselves from others. Having a bunch of unseemly slots that also gather dirt is just a deal breaker for me and I imagine quite a few others. That said, it will be interesting if the performance over rides the distraction. I am a Wilson fan so I hope that is the case.
    5 points
  31. I'd agree with this, the rest of the club looks very clean and I'd even say classic with the chrome finish. The power holes don't help the look of a players club where technology is normally hidden. And do give them the look of a GI club. That said, I play a Ping driver and turbulators are a much more "in-your-face" technology and I don't mind them. They do have that small indention, and do collect dirt, if they could have gotten that transition smoother, that would have been better. But from the performance perspective, I would say the package that Wilson has put together, is very good.

  34. Hit a small bucket this morning at the range before "work", I've been chomping at the bit to get back out for some practice for two reasons. First, I was disappointed in my last practice session, which admittedly I wasn't in the right headspace for. Second, @Wedgie very graciously let me borrow a set of One Lengths to try out to see how I liked them. So after one bucket... please allow me to say I like them VERY MUCH. I started with 7i because I know what my "usual" distance & flight is with that club using range balls. From there I jumped to 5i, which I hit low but holy cow so straight. From there I moved up to wedges which honestly didn't take much adjustment to hit. I've read to just take a normal swing with them and not go slow or hit softer due to the shaft length, and I hit some towering shots. I ended with driver, my first ball was a worm burner and I immediately thought "oh man here we go again". Then I realized that I was tensing up and had a death grip on the downswing. I eased up and relaxed my wrists & arms and what do you know - decent (for me) drivers to end the bucket. I'm hoping I can get out again tomorrow to hit these irons some more.

  37. I agree with you on inserts, face thickness, and milling patterns will influence ball speed off the face and that a ball will react and feel different when switching putters. I interpreted the original question being about whether the same putter would cause different balls to go different distances with the same stroke. You discussion of feel (sound) the ball makes may influence how we as a player stroke the ball which could influence distance. Perhaps if I had a robot do the testing, I might see some slight but insignificant differences. But as a player those difference probably become meaningless since even the best putters in the world have a fairly larger dispersion pattern for putts. The image below is the dispersion pattern of a PGA professional hitting 20 foot putts from the same spot. If this is how the best players in the world miss, I don't think a different ball will have a significant impact.

  41. So the day that I thought would never come has come. My Scotty Cameron is coming out, probably never to return. In it's place, this bad mama-jama... EVNROLL ER2B. Yeah, the MGS "Most Wanted" rating had me curious, so I picked it up having no intention of buying anything, ever. Big mistake, an hour later it was in my bag. I did the responsible thing and got fit, and compared several others, but this was a clear winner for me. I like the look of a blade over a mallet, so a wide face-balanced blade is a perfect compromise/solution for me. I've gamed the Scotty for 6 years and was fit for that too, but 4 years ago I switched to left-hand low and haven't looked back, and about that time became a Dave Stockton believer, so a straight-back straight-through motion and a new grip meant the toe-balanced Scotty really wasn't a good fit anymore. But, I love that putter and I made it work for a long time. The feel of this thing is great though, and the Sweet Face tech is no joke. Give it a try and you'll see what I mean.

In my case, I find the differences in ball flight and distance to be pretty interesting given these specs: Ping i210 D7 Forged Ping i210 D7 Forged Ping i210 D7 Forged Iron Loft Loft Lie Lie Length Length 3 19.0 19.0 60.5 59.5 39.25 39.50 4 22.0 21.5 61.0 60.0 38.75 39.00 5 25.0 24.5 61.5 61.0 38.25 38.50 6 28.0 27.5 62.0 61.5 37.75 38.00 7 31.5 30.5 62.5 62.0 37.25 37.50 8 35.5 34.5 63.3 63.0 36.75 37.00 9 40.0 39.0 64.0 63.5 36.25 36.50 PW 44.5 44.0 64.6 64.0 35.75 36.00 So yes, the D7s are a touch long and strong (and based on the spin I'm getting, they're definitely getting the friction on) and the flatter lie is almost certainly to blame for my newfound butter cut. As for ball flight, I'm reasonably confident it has to do with the i210's weighting (see side-by-sides). I'm certainly not about to #FindItCutIt, but it seems reasonable that the D7 has a higher CoG than the i210. I also have a different shaft, but it should be comparable (DG S300 vs KBS Tour-V 110S).

  45. About time golf channel has morning golf on for all to watch. Crazy that they can't do it for weekly PGA Tour events, especially when they were the only sporting event on with the pandemic going on earlier in the summer.

  46. Grew up playing the Halo and Gears of War Series, so its easy to say I am hooked and tied to Xbox for that reason. The one fall back, as a huge baseball fan, has always been that the SHOW was a PlayStation Exclusive. Luckily that is changing with the next gen console.

  47. Had a driver fitting today and ended up with a Ping G410. By far the most consistent driver head for me, brought my spin numbers down over 1000. Only problem is lead time for the driver is about a month. Looks like an excuse for some cold weather golf before snow comes.

Nice! Once I started lining my putts up it made a huge difference too. And there's nothing quite like seeing a long birdie putt drop!

  49. If my second daughter wasn't born in 2020 and I wouldn't have been able to work from home and be here for first 6 months of life so far... I would probably be more upset with how this year has gone LOL Gotta focus on the positives!
