Putter swing weight - 31"

Recommended Posts

I game my putters at 31" - this drastically changes swing weight.

I've always just sorta gone with it, but now feel like I should try and "fix" it.

Question is how:

Shaft tip weights (I feel like this would affect how the face opens and closes??)

Lead tape (please no on my new betti)

Drill and plug with tungsten

Any other sneaky way to deal with this? My estimate is I need 20-30 grams added)

You're going to either have to drill it out and plug it or go with tungsten powder down the shaft with a cork (which artificially makes the weight feel right).

Rookie - so... anyone you'd suggest to send out to for drilling and plugging?

do you think adding weight in the shaft negatively affects performance? (feel like it's a weight spot to put weight... too high and too off center)?

Kenny - considering that as well...

Tom Slighter. I'd say LaMont but he's not doing refinishes any more.

I don't like putting weight in the shaft because it is false weighting and changes the feel of the putter. I usually go lead tape myself but if you don't like it you don't like it.

Soooo was doing a bit more research... Somewhere I found an idea of a lightweight shaft would increase swing weight - but typical convention says a lighter shaft = lower swing weight - but.... At some point as the club gets shorter, does this rule flip itself? Would a lighter shaft at 31" get me back in the game? (Found a 45 gram women's flex hybrid shaft........)

Changing the flex is going to feel different.

Don't think that one will work.  That putter is a shaft over spud design.

If your looking to add more head weight feel while still retaining the benefits of a good balance for this putter check out the Opti-Vibe interal shaft weighting sysytem from Tour Lock. They come in 12g, 20g, 30g, 50g, 75g, 100g, 150g weight variations. These weights are inserted down into the shaft and can be adjusted anywhere from 4-10 from the butt end of the grip. No more cork, sand and epoxy. don't like the weight, take it out and change it for another one. MGS did a review on this product about a year ago in their counter balance write up. Shoot us a call and I can go over the system in more detail.

It sounds to me like you would bennefit from having a 20-30 weight around 6-8 inches down from the butt end of the grip to give yuou that extra head weight feel.

Cheers,

MK

MK/PutterMan

Had been looking into the idea of the vibe - I think it's pretty similar/same to what Dave Hicks was doing back in the day?

I typo'd on my original post - supposed to be 30" - but that's if I don't do a claw grip, with a claw grip I change to 32".

Regardless, I know when I chop this shaft it's gonna make the head feel a lot lighter which I'd like to avoid.

Also, I feel like some counter weight might smooth out my stroke which is a bit "jittery" to say the least.

Would love to connect and pick your brain a bit. I looked at your profile but didn't see any info for how to connect.

Counter balancing at that length is going to make it even harder to find the head on that putter.
