I guess the biggest thing is if your son has interest, personally, I'd say let him have at it and teach him everything YOU know! Then, maybe ask a pro their opinion as well? Some great programs to help you with this. Don't try to do it all yourself, make sure it is fun for them and don't expect fast progress. The more they play the better, I think it's a great age. Popular Post Shrek74
Good morning, Spies!! What a beautiful morning, albeit a little chilly. Sun is shining bright, no clouds in the sky. Gonna be a great day. Just another work day today. Nothing super special. Oh wait, that's not true!! NFL DRAFT!!!!! Hell yeah. I love watching the draft. It's crazy drama and franchises making extremely dumb decisions. Gonna be great! Mom's making stuffed peppers tonight, so I'll be going over for dinner. That'll be a great dinner tonight and likely this weekend too with leftovers. Mmmmmm.... Then there's the community call this afternoon, which is always enjoyable. Popular Post Byrnzee
Good morning Spies! Opened the Forum this morning to see two more AWESOME testing opportunities. Shoutout to the mods for all their hard work and continuing to bless us! I haven't heard much about Stix but am intrigued to learn more. SM10s are the pinnacle of wedges! Good luck to all applying to both opportunities! Another cooler day in Chicago with no real plans on the agenda outside of work. Should be able to join the Community Call this afternoon as long as nothing unexpected pops up. Will be great to hear from Aaron at Titleist Vokey about all the ins and outs of the gold standard of wedges. Hoping to catch some of the Zurich today. The format isn't for everyone, but I do enjoy watching the team events. @GolfSpy_KFT glad to hear the good news about your son. Hopefully you can breathe a bit easier now. Have a great Thursday! buckpillar
1 hour ago, GolfSpy_KFT said: Good morning fellow spies and happy Thursday. Looks to be a nice sunny day here today with highs in the low 60s. Had our second baseball practice last night which my son unfortunately had to miss due to a case of pink eye. Sounds like it is going around in his classroom so no real surprise he picked that up. Already started eye drops and he should be able to go to school tomorrow. His birthday is Saturday (turning 7) and we are planning on going to a waterpark hotel Sunday and both boys will get the day off school Monday. Our youngest has some sort of nasty upper respiratory infection it seems like with gunky coughs and a plugged up nose, so hoping he feels better by then. He had also been getting one random fever a week (except this week) for the last probably month or so that wouldn't even last a full day and then be gone. We took him in to see the pediatrician yesterday in regards to that and now whatever he's dealing with, and he ordered some lab work to be precautionary. We of course were his last patient of the day yesterday, so while we've gotten all the lab results back, we haven't heard from him yet on any kind of diagnosis. @cnosil I think this discussion came up before with being able to get lab results back so quickly as a blessing and a curse. Having a very basic understanding of some of this is also a blessing and a curse. All of his blood cell counts look normal, which should be a good sign. He did have some elevated outcomes and some low outcomes, so those are what are weighing on our minds currently. I am anxiously awaiting hearing something back from his pediatrician, and it is going to be a long day until we do. Hopefully it'll be this morning at a reasonable time. Sorry to rant on about all that, I just really appreciate the community support of this forum. Going to be a fantastic community call today, but I am going to be leaving work early this afternoon to stay in line with my weekly hours and hopefully plan on getting the boys out onto the golf course, so will have to miss out. Hope everyone has a great day today. Got to love the schools for passing around illnesses Happy Birthday to the young man, Hope the rest of the family stays healthy, the youngest symptoms sounds like what my wife had gone through recently. Hope he feels better very soon, it really is tough to have a little one being sick, take care. Popular Post Kenny B
5 minutes ago, RomanG said: Good morning everyone! My question of the day is this: What is the best way to teach your child the game of golf? And what is a good age to begin this? My son is 6, soon to be 7 and it is certainly challenging! I don’t have kids so bear that in mind. Start with putting and let them have fun with it. Quit when focus is lost. Slowly work in some drills when they are ready; don’t push for it. You’ll know if they are ready for more. You can change up visits to the course with chipping as they become more coordinated. Let them want to come to the course. We have a 9-hole exec course with a pro that loves to teach kids. Each summer he puts on several clinics; 10am-noon on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Typically, he gets 20-30 kids signed up, and I believe the three days cost $35 but that was 10 years ago. He greets each kid, looks them in the eye, asks their name (first and last), and shakes their hand. He gives them the rules; what’s allowed and what isn’t. He breaks the kids up into 3 groups by age; one group is on the driving range, one group is on the chipping green and one group is on the putting green. The pro stays on the range to focus on the full swing; volunteers help out on the chipping and putting greens. I volunteered for many years. Each group spends about 30 minutes at each station, then they rotate to the next station. He has clubs available if the kids don’t have any; most do though. I’ve seen kids as young as 4-5 and as old as 12. Personally, I think the 4-5 year olds are a little too young but it depends on the kid; some are more focused than others… attention span is very short. The Thursday session is on the course in groups of 4-5 and 3 holes are “played”. All tee off; we pick up the balls; go to a spot in front of a green and hit chip shots and putt out in order. Golf etiquette is stressed. Afterwards, we all go to the clubhouse for hot dogs and a drink. Popular Post Erin B
Good Throwback Thursday morning to you MGS troops! I played 9 yesterday for practice, had a birdie, two bogies, and a water hazard double for a 3 over 37. I was on the verge of the first PAR round of the year. Oh soooooo close!!! Numbers are getting better. I’m really starting to like this GolfShot app. I’m learning a ton about my swing and some of the areas I need improvement on. Anyway, our son unit got us box seats for the hockey game last night! The Eagles lost but we still had fun. The drive home was a bear though! I’m still tired this morning!!! We didn’t get home till after midnight. Los poopies weren’t happy, and this morning has some pretty good wind going on. Oh, almost forgot…. Here’s a couple throwbacks for you all. The daughter unit is on the left and you can see the 3 from her number 83 on her arm. I can’t recall the Olympic team player’s name…Megan something. And this is the fam when the spousal unit and daughter unit ran the Bolder Boulder. Good memories! Hope you all have a great throwback Thursday! Happy birdie hunting!!! Follow up on this, had a blast and feel like I’ve got some good tools to take some of the gas work out of putting and green reading. Also given some good drills that I can do to work on speed and start line overall a good experience and aim point makes a lot of sense when I wrap. sirchunksalot
@Samuel09152I'm glad to hear the good news about your pup, things like that are scary because they're just such good souls and you never want to have anything bad happen to them. @GolfSpy_KFT I'm glad you got good news on your youngest! ejgaudette, Rob Person, Cfhandyman and 5 others
Popular Post ILMgolfnut
Good afternoon Spies! The last 26 hours have been ... interesting. Worked nine hours in Detroit yesterday, headed for the airport. While waiting for my flight, was notified by the airline that it was delayed, and that I should seek an alternate flight. Number of alternate flights available to ILM last night: Zero. Called my corporate travel agent. It took three calls, but they got me on a flight at 7:30 a.m. today after I take the delayed flight to Charlotte and spend the night there. At this point a gate agent shows up and I talk to her. She looks at what the travel agent did and advised me that I still had the seat on my 10:58 pm flight home, along with the 7:30 flight today, and that there was a decent chance of making the 10:58. But she gave me a hotel and meal voucher in Charlotte just in case, since the delay was due to mechanical issues. Finally leave Detroit, get off the plane in Charlotte 12 minutes before my flight to ILM is scheduled to board, I powerwalk through the airport to the departure gate and arrive just as boarding begins. Then once I'm on the plane our departure is further delayed while maintenance crews complete some work and some paperwork. Finally left at 11:39 pm, flight home is uneventful, retrieve my car and get home at exactly 1 a.m. Then this morning I'm a zombie. Went to a doctor appointment at 8:45 (eyes barely open), came home and went back to bed until 5 p.m. Got a couple of nice emails from Mike Carroll of Fit For Golf. During our huddle with him last week for the FFG test, I advised him that I didn't think I could do one of the warmup exercises properly because of my post-surgical back. He asked me to send him a video of my attempts to do it; GF shot the video on Saturday and I sent it to him. He got back to me and suggested a variation of the exercise. Today he asked how the variation was working. I said it was slightly better than the original version, but not much. But it's nice that he's taking the time to help me with this when I'm not even a paying customer. Cfhandyman, William P, cksurfdude and 11 others 12 1 1 Quote Obsessed with chasing the dimpled orb. Popular Post berkeleybob
Morning one and all! Days are busy at the moment with a project in the shop, seasonal chores, with one eye on the NFL Draft, and the other on golf. Next week weather predictions are looking pretty good, so perhaps I can finally get summer tires on the car. Oh, and get in a round or two of golf. Have a good one.
