Club Building Journey

Recommended Posts

Taking the leap of faith and diving into club building and repair with little to no experience in this department. The range that had the only club builders I trust closed down so now I am taking matters into my own hands and trying to learn it all myself. I'm a very hands on person to begin with and very comfortable with taking things apart and putting them together but I still starting with baby steps.

I am hoping that this thread can be used for advice, tips, or tricks from anyone who has a good amount of experience in this field and doesn't want their fellow spies to have the same growing pains as them. I also created an Instagram account (@zm_club_building) that will feature everything I have worked on as well as any equipment purchased or mistakes that get made. Every journey starts with a first step so here is the first of many to come.

Please check out YT videos produced by Jim McCleary at McGolf Custom Clubs (subscribe so you receive all)  He is on the MGS forums (@McGolf).
He’s my go to for anything build related. I’ve learned a lot from him over the past 3 years. Invaluable info for sure.
Cheers!

I just looked him up on YT and actually have stumbled across his videos at times and always felt they were very informative and easy to understand. I'll be sure to use his channel as a resource for any questions that might come up throughout my journey. There is a plethora of information out there so knowing  a good source is always a great place to start.

Incredible timing! I was just about to pull the trigger on two clubs to test out from Maltby, and decided I should poke around here to see if anyone had some sound advice, especially for a true newb 😜

I'll be checking out McGolf's channel tonight, and I'll be sure to add photos if/when I start some stuff!

TS3 - it's just SO pretty, and I've been toying with the idea of some kind of forged(ish) cavity back.  Tested out the ZX-5 (Mark 2)'s, and LOVED them, so thought I'd give these a try - at 1/2 price, just to see if it's a match.

100%.  The TS3 is a beauty. Hasn’t made its way up north last time I checked. Oh well. I love the dbms myself but, I don’t know if I have the game for them yet. Anyway, when you’re done with that TS3, would love to see the result.👍

I'll for sure post some pics of the DIY build - finalizing everything I'll need now, and about to pull the trigger. 🙂

Okay! Here we go - just purchased two shafts, two heads (6 and 9-iron), epoxy, epoxy gun, ruler, acetone, shaft-cutter, sand paper, and ferrules. Phew 🙂 The nice thing is that the clubs themselves will only come out to (approx) $68/each, and now that I have the supplies, building out the rest of the set should be no big deal.  Even if I have to buy them one or two at a time, thanks to my golf budget being added to every 2 weeks 😉

Excited to get this stuff (sometime next week, by the looks of it) and to start building!

Mobile Clubmaker Golf on YT is another really good resource for club building. Between AJ and Jim's how-to videos, I've saved myself thousands over the years in mistakes.

I haven't gotten there quite yet as I don't have the equipment for club repair but I am working on getting things. I have tuned in to a few lives and love the ease you have explaining everything so I thank you alot for doing them as they are a great resource.
