 Hello, fellow spies!  I’m excited to test the OnCore ELIXR Golf Balls and share my findings with you.

My name is Christi and I live in central PA not far from Hershey or Gettysburg.  It’s a beautiful place to live and play golf.  The woods and rolling hills scattered through the farmlands steal my attention many times during a round.

I’m married with no children and learned to play golf during the pandemic.  I have a trio of hobbies…fishing, writing and playing golf.  All compete for my time and right now golf is definitely winning.  I even started working at a local golf course to feed my addiction.

I play every week and sometimes more, especially now that I’m working at a course.  My handicap is high but I hope to shave a few strokes off this season.  I average 104-106 with a low of 98.  My drive is the best part of my game.  I use a Callaway Epic Max with a senior shaft.  My middle game is hot and cold and my putting is weak.  My husband always says “drive for show and putt for dough”.  Hence the need to work at a pro shop .

I have a variety of clubs in my bag including many from my original starter set but I’m slowing replacing them with new or slightly used versions.  I have a Taylor Made Sim2 5 Hybrid which is my go to followed by a Callaway Mavrik 7 iron which comes in a close second.  I hit the ball fairly straight and have the ability to do much better but just can’t seem to put it together in the same round.

As a relatively new player I am still learning about all aspects of the game and the science in every area amazes me!  The ELIXRs perimeter weighting intrigues me as it promises to increase ball speed and roll.  It claims to feel better at impact and be more accurate. 

I want all of this but even more I want distance, it’s what drives me (pun intended).  It’s what keeps me going to the driving range and what I long for at every tee.  While this ball can’t change my swing or torque, I’m looking forward to seeing how it compares to the others in my bag and am hoping for more.

I’ve been using a variety of brands including Titleist, Taylor Made and Maxfli.  It’s hard to beat a Titleist in my opinion but the price typically leads me to choose another brand.  I will be comparing the ELIXR to each of these during my regular rounds of golf, at a local par 3 to see how they affect my short game and at my local park to see how accurate they are when hitting at a target (bucket in the middle of the grass field) which I’ll have pictures of as I’m testing.

The OnCore ELIXRs came today!!

The packaging is simple and appealing and the sleeves have a sleek “O” logo that I love.   The balls have the OnCore logo using a red twist which will make it a little easier to identify when you’re in the rough but I do like the silver from the sleeve and think it would look sharp on a ball.

 

I pulled a few sleeves of the other brands I wanted to test them against and got to work. The OnCore logo definitely stands out.  I opened a pack from each brand and measured and weighed them.  Surprisingly, all balls were exactly the same in size and weight.

 

And, did you know that the dimples on golf balls are different sizes?  I thought they would be the same size across any given ball.  They’re not.  The patterns alone are mesmerizing and the sheer number of dimples is amazing!  Each brand has a different number of dimples and the ELIXRs have the most in my selection coming in at 350.  The Srixon Soft Feel has 324, The Titleist Velocity and MaxFli Softfli each have 332.  
 

Dimples help direct golf balls and affect how far and high or low they fly.  The dimples create a layer of air around the ball which increase or reduce the drag (depending on number of dimples) and help direct the ball.  There’s an amazing amount of math and science behind every dimple and its size and shape.  

For those of you who have played golf a long time, this could be common knowledge but for a relatively new player, the science behind every aspect of golf amazes me…

 

The packaging and the balls look great and have me digging into more than I ever thought I’d be interested in…Now for the real fun!  Except, we’re going to have rain for the next 4-6 days.  It’s going to be hard to wait…

EnCore states that the ELIXR’s 350 dimples “delivers a pure feel off the club face and gives the new ELIXR superior greenside control, durability and unmatched performance in its category” (www.encore golf.com)

The Review - May 28, 2023
OnCore ELIXR Golf Balls – Official MGS Forum Review by Christi M.

I took the OnCore to my local golf course and spent several hours hitting short approach shots (20 - 50 yards), chipping and putting.  I chipped in my backyard throughout the testing period, spending about an hour each time comparing the feel and accuracy in a short, “rough” environment.  Since I work at a local course I was able to play 3-4 holes at my convenience in order to compare balls and did so several times in addition to regular rounds and one tournament to compare the feel, flight and distance.

First Impressions: 10/10



These balls looked great…great packaging, great logo with an overall impressive presentation.  (I do love the silver “O” logo on the boxes and would love to see it on the balls.) OnCore promised that my ball would go farther and roll farther with more accuracy and less wind disruption.  What more could I ask for?  We’ll see if they can deliver…



Aesthetics:  8/10

The OnCore ELIXRs impressed me right out of the box and continued to do so after getting pummeled by my clubs and various course obstacles.   The red “O” made it easy to identify and the condition of the ball stood up with only a small scuff from a close encounter with a tree.



    •    Every time I washed my ball at the wash station I expected scuff marks and almost every time, I walked away with a clean, scuff free ball.
    •    These balls lasted longer than any other balls I’ve used and the one scuff I had was minor after hitting a tree at about 160 yards.



    •    I didn’t hit the cart path and the shots after hitting the ball with my driver, hybrids and wedges was the same…a dirty but scuff free ball.



    •    I’m deducting 2 points in this section because if I hadn’t been testing this ball, it would have been switched out during the first round and forgotten.    Let me explain…the ball feels heavy…it’s the same weight as balls made by other brands but I struggled with approach shots and drives.  During the first round, I switched from a Titleist to the OnCore every three holes and planned to do so with other brands in subsequent rounds but decided I needed to stick with the OnCores.  The reason I decided to stick with the OnCore Elixers was because I was wanting to go back to the Titleist each time I switched to the OnCore because the feel of the ball along with a few other factors, was causing me to question whether I would keep this ball in my bag long term.  I needed to give it a chance.
    •    When I hit it with my wedge (from 25-75 yards) it sounded like I was hitting something metal and had a “ting” sound.  My club felt like I hit a dead weight and the ball flopped about 15 yards in front of me.  Due to the feel of heaviness on subsequent shots, I realized I was trying to hit it harder by swinging faster to compensate for the perceived weight.  Once I settled down and started hitting the ball without trying to kill it, I started hitting it further and with more accuracy.  The ball had the nice “thwack” that I love to hear and as I got used to the way then ball traveled, it also went farther than other balls I’ve used.
    •    The sound and feel threw me off when I first started to use the ELIXRs and it took a good round and a half until I felt comfortable with the nuances of the ball.



    •    With my wedge, irons and driver, I struggled for different reasons…
    •    I typically use a starter “wedge” (no specification as to which type of wedge it is…just a “w”) a 9 and a 7 iron.  With my wedge and these irons, the “ting” and heaviness of the ball were consistent in the beginning but improved as I learned to work with the ball.
    •    My 5 hybrid is the only club with which I hit the ELIXR well from the beginning.  I tend to hit my hybrid well when I have a bad drive because I’m determined to make up for it.  While this is not always the case, it was true throughout my experience with the ELIXR.  I used this club more often than normal due to the fact that I was hitting the ball so well.
    •    My driver was the club that made the ELIXR sing.  It took awhile to get used to the sound and feel as the thud I’d hear and the flopped drives at the beginning frustrated me a great deal. The low flight of the ball was an additional issue when it came to my driver and though I know it is one of the features of the ball, was hard to get used to.  Now that I am prepared for the feel and the flight, I am hitting the ball with better accuracy and greater distance.

The Numbers (18/20)



    •    In the testing I did on the putting green, in my backyard and in the short practice area at the course, I didn’t find any significant variations between the OnCore ELIXR, the Titleist Velocity and the Taylor Made Tour Response.  The ELIXR felt heavier off the wedge but didn’t affect the outcome of the shot in any significant way.  I spent a great deal of time in these scenarios and the results varied with no brand over or under performing compared to the others.



    •    For the first regular round and a half I played, I struggled to keep using the ELIXR.  I wanted to keep my Titleist Velocity on the tee and stay with what was comfortable.  I would have been happy with my Taylor Made or even my MaxFli’s because they are also in my comfort zone.  The feel of the OnCore ELIXR ball was difficult to adjust to and the reason I’ve deducted 2 points.  However, I did adjust and my game has improved because of it.
    •    Before this test, my longest drive has been 170 yards.  I’ve hit the ball 200 yards on several occasions and gained 10+ yards with my irons.
    •    While other balls may have “felt better” with the weight distribution being toward the core, the ELIXR has proven to me that a new “feel” can be a positive if given the chance.

On The Course (20/20)



    •    Off the Tee – The ELIXR has increased my distance and accuracy.  I am hitting the fairway or the first cut of rough more often which sets me up for a much better second shot.
    •    Approach – The ELIXR flies lower and rolls farther because it hits the fairway and the green with less angle and therefore continues on its path with less resistance.  This has forced me to evaluate my club choice and ball placement and has improved my chance to get par because I’m getting the ball closer to the hole.



    •    Ball Flight – The ball flies significantly lower for me.  I’ve never been a high hitter but these are definitely lower shots than they’ve ever been.  I’ve only played in the wind for at most 1/4 round but the ball felt crisp and flew through with little disturbance.  I believe it is the low flight which isn’t affected as much by the wind.  While getting used to the flight of the ball has been an adjustment, it has improved my game and made me more confident overall. 
    •    Around the Green – The ball is rolling farther across clubs and though I am still adjusting, I am enjoying the process.  I don’t use my 9 iron as often as I should and as my “coach” husband suggests, but now I understand why having the ball roll out more is a good thing.  I’ve always wanted to aim for the flag and go from there but with these balls I’ve been hitting with a new approach and they roll on and across the green much better.



    •    Putting – this has always been the area of my game that needs the most work and that remains true.  I’m getting more familiar with the weight and roll but don’t seem to do better from one brand to another.  The biggest difference is the fact that I am getting the ball closer to the hole on the approach which increases the probability of getting it in the hole with fewer strokes.
    •    I was so frustrated with the ELIXR at the beginning of this test and wanted to swap it out.   I’m a natural sales person and tell the world when I find something that I love…this will be an easy sell.  I’m hitting the ball farther and with more accuracy and have found a new “feel” that I love.

The Good, the bad, the inbetween (18/20)



OnCore said that they created a ball that would increase my distance with a lower flight and more roll.  I wasn’t sure I was ever going to hit the ball well enough to find out, but after spending time getting used to the ball, I can say that the promises made have proven true for me. 

Play it or Trade it? (20/20)
I hope to play in several tournaments this year in addition to my register rounds.  Whether the round is for fun or there are prizes at stake, the ELIXR will be the ball on the tee.  I don’t think I’ve adjusted completely and look forward to longer drives and lower scores.  The price is better than my old “go-to” Titleist and while I may not find these on the course as much, I can afford to keep a supply on hand.

Conclusion



This ball was frustrating and I wanted to trade it in for what was comfortable.  However, after using this ball repeatedly, I am thankful I was chosen for this test and I am thankful that I had to play it consistently so that I could see how well it works for me.  I am a high handicap golfer with a low swing speed.  This ball works with my style and has given me greater distance by 20-30 yards (I still hope for more) and more accuracy than I’ve seen in my game before.  The OnCore ELIXR has found a new home in my golf bag.  I never expected a golf ball to make such a difference in game!

Who is Peter Lacasse?

I am not totally positive after 62 years, but I guess that he is still being developed! He is a loyal friend, competitive to a fault, trained Chef (Johnson and Wales 1981) working in and around the Boston area as an Executive Chef for 8 years. Then I decided to take a Culinary Arts Teachers position at my old High School in Attleboro MA. For 32 years I was a teacher, Track and Field Coach and whatever coach the children needed me to be. I retired from teaching and coaching in June 2020.

My wife of 39 years Kelly, totally out of my league, is a major contributor in who I am! We have 4 adult children, Candice 38, Mark 34, Jason 31 and Sean 28. Three are married with children, 8 grandchildren, and our baby is still searching for that girl.

The first time I played real golf, not just swinging clubs in a field with found golf balls from a local range or golf course, was at Stone E Lea golf course at 16 with a borrowed set of clubs. Then I found a used set of Spalding Elite Irons 2-pw. I continued to play golf (not very seriously for 40 years) mostly playing 2-5 times a year for fun. A 105 average (low 93 Lucky day) and a high of 132 with an eagle from 165. Over the past 5 years I have played more often, and since 2020, have taken a more competitive approach, playing 20-27 rounds a year (once a week). Overall, my average score now is 96 with a low of 88 (twice in the past 2 years) and a much more consistent Iron game with some gifted Ping 710's.

I have only owned 3 sets of irons the Spaulding’s 25+ years, a boxed set of Wilson staffs on liquidation 15+ years and the Ping 710’s I use now. Pretty much the same with Woods Wilson 1200’s 1,3,5 And Taylor made Bubble shafts 1,3,5. When I Retired I celebrated with a fitting for woods and purchased Ping G410 driver and 3W. I never was much for gear as I felt that it’s the player and not the tools. After getting my new tools I have seen a big difference in good –great contact and am really enjoying the game more. MGS has also helped me with other spies thought processes to enhance the most important part of the game “ME”.

So excited to test the the OnCore ELIXR because I am really starting to feel the ball off the club and it seems to be a good fit for my swing speeds around 92. Also to see how it compares to the Callaway Supersoft which I like to play!  The price point is good and want to see if they can reduce the spin off my driver while maintaining the higher spin on High Irons while maintaining that soft feel.

THE UNBOXING  4/28/23

I was so excited when I came home to see the box on the front stairs. When I opened it my first impression was simple box cover (gray scale) with just a little gold. Simple and not flashy.

The words “THE PERFECT FEEL” stands out but not the largest font. I like the idea of feel, because I have started to feel a difference in club to ball over the last few years.

When I picked up the ball the cover seems to have a gripping property, not sticky but similar to rubber but not soft. Something I haven’t felt before on a ball.  

I like their OnCore logo simple with a splash of color.

 It might be a nice look on the box also.

 

I compared the dimple pattern to the Callaway supersoft and was similar in the larger med and small dimples, but the Callaway has a hexagon shape and to the eye a more defined look and depth versus a more rounded tapered look.

I would guess that less defined dimples would produce less drag, and the grippe cover might create more spin off the higher irons.

 

Overall, my first impression of quality and looks are really good. Hopefully the promise of enhanced feel around the green, added distance with more accuracy off the tee is legit and they prove to be durable.

 Looking forward to doing some chipping in my backyard and getting on the course with them. Here we goooo!

 

Oncore Elixr Golf Ball: Final Review 5/26/23

First Impression: 10/10

The OnCore Claim that ELIXR delivers exceptional accuracy and control was my main focus. “A premium cast urethane cover delivers a soft, pure feel off the club face and gives the ELIXR great greenside control, durability and first class performance”.

My game ball is the Callaway Supersoft which matches my 89-94 swing speed. One day on multiple holes I hit both the Elixr and Supersoft so I could compare sound and feel with the same shot. My first impression was they were similar sounding, like a wood bat, with a sweet hit on my Irons (Ping G710) and the same muffled metallic ping off the driver and fairway woods. When hit well the Elixr felt lighter and even noticeably lighter with a slight toe hits. In chipping, the ball felt soft off the wedge and 7iron as well as the putter. The ball seems to hold a line once it starts rolling. It also seemed to roll out more on drives and fairway woods while checking up great on greens. It might be the perimeter weight but also there seemed to be a slight tacky feel to the ball that stayed as long as I didn’t lose it (a couple times over 13 holes)

Aesthetics: 9/10

I like their OnCore logo simple with a splash of color. Nicely stated and enhances the look of the ball. The box and sleeve have a rich look with the gray scale shades, but It might be a nice look to have the splash of red on the box also.

The dimple pattern was similar, to my gamer ball, having large, medium and small dimples, round tapered depth that seemed to be a bit shallower than the Supersoft’s hexagon shape. The cover held up very well even hitting a few trees and gravel/stone cart paths. There seemed to be a stain on the ball, probably from a pine I hit, that did not wipe off but did after a good wash. It really looked unblemished after 13 straight holes. The putting –elixr-- line took some time to get used to but works. The ball looks really good on a tee with the logo on top. Overall, I really like the packaging and look.

The Numbers: 20/20

The Elixr outperformed my gamer in every way. The feel, with overall longer drives (less spin) on my last 2 rounds have had 3 over 265(one played like 280) On the tee with the driver and 3 wood (14.5) gaining about 10 yards more from this ball with keeping my ball in the rough more often than woods on bad hits. On upper Irons and wedges the distance seems to be the same but I am definitely getting much more spin. The ball holds the green well and on 5 occasions (2 rounds) the ball actually backed up which almost never happens.

 

On The Course: 20/20

I am one who never felt that a ball can help your shots. For most of my life whatever ball was in the bag I played. Over the past 6 years I have been playing the Supersoft about 95% of the time for consistency reasons because they match my swing speed. I have noticed more consistent results with it, but was not sure if it was because I was playing more. The OnCore Elixr has changed that in my mind.

Off the Tee: Feel, sound, distance and less slice (more times is just a fade) has put me in less trouble to start. I find myself in more fairways and slight ruff, in playable situations, than in woods taking a drop.

Approach: This is where I noticed the biggest difference for me. I think that I have stopped or backed it up on a green maybe 5 times in the past 2 plus years and have done it 5 times in the last 2 rounds. The ball checks up well with some roll out. The ball flight seems to be straighter with slight toe/heel hits and the overall distance with the high Irons is the same as my gamer.

Ball Flight: I usually hit the ball with a high flight with all my clubs and the Elixr maintains that flight constantly. The driver woods and 3 hybrid do seem to roll out more than normal but maintain a good arch flight.

Around the green: I haven’t noticed much difference here because I usually use a 7 iron to bump and run. The roll after the bump is really good but not a noticeable difference from my usual ball. I did try some flop type shots that worked out well so I plan to try more.

Putting: The Elixr feels good off the putter, not heavy with a nice click off the face. It rolls great and seems to hold a line very well. My putting distance has been really good when using the OnCore with not as many short of the hole putts. Definitely fewer than before, could this be confidence and better putting days maybe! Confidence it the putt, I believe, is the name of that game! At first the alignment markings were a slight adjustment because it just seemed to look different. I really can’t put an exact reason it just did. After a few holes with one putts over 10 feet, it didn’t seem to matter.

The Good, The Bad, The In-between: 19/20

As a new tester I really enjoyed the process of being chosen to test the balls. I was so excited when I received the email that I was a tester, but it took way too long to get them. It seems that without a fitting needed OnCore should have been able to ship right away but wasn’t able too. It was really nice that OnCore, owning up to the delay, sent an additional dozen Elixrs as compensation which I appreciated. That shows me that they are customer service oriented which is important when you only do direct orders and shipping. Once I received the shipping notice everything has been super positive since.

Play It or Trade It: 19.5/20

I have a hard time justifying the price of many golf balls such as Chrome Soft $4.15 a ball and that the Super Soft at $2.08 is more palatable. With the Elixr at $2.50 and good discounts with 3dz./ 6 dz purchases $2.35/ $2.10 make the price point very comparable to my gamer. With that being said I really feel that the apparent advantages to my game with the Elixr it is now going to be the one I play. As usual really bad swing days will = Whatever balls I find are in play.

Conclusion:

The OnCore Elixr golf ball seems to back all its claims. I definitely am getting more distance, more roll on landing, and control off the tee. My intermediate and high irons are tracking better on miss hits and great on pure hits. The feel is nice and soft even on slight miss hits. I am seeing greater bite and stopping ability on the greens making me feel I can be more aggressive on approaches. My confidence around the green has increased and especially putting with the Elixr. The OnCore company seems to have made a great ball for the golfer with a high 80’s – low 90’s golf swing who needs some forgiveness with their ball. I can truly see this ball helping me shave strokes off my game with control, distance and more importantly “Confidence”.

Final Score:  97.5/100

On a side note: I recently gifted 2 sleeves of the Elixr to a friend who is a low to mid 90's swing and a 10 index. His response after playing many rounds was "HE HAS A NEW BALL". He felt he hit a straighter ball with more distance and control. I guess I am part of the OnCore sales staff!!!!

Hey everyone! Stoked to be a part of this test, and figured y'all should get to know the dude who's testing. I'll start with my non-golf related life to flesh me out a bit. 

I am about 6 years out of college living in Wichita, KS working in the aerospace industry. I'm in engineering so you bet I'm going to be a data nerd with testing. Outside of golf I like to rock climb (go figure that I would live in the flattest state of the USA and enjoy this hobby), and I dabble in woodworking particularly turning. 

Switching back to golf! I enjoy our municipal courses here in town we get a pretty sweet membership deal for all 4. I started golfing a few years ago in college as just a way to hangout outside, but I started to get serious about 2 years ago. I'm rocking a gnarly 23 handicap, recently went to a fitting (that turned into a lesson) and learned I had a wicked 13 degree out to in! So if you aim 45 degrees left on a drive to counter your slice then follow me on this journey!

For my testing of this ball, I plan to compare it against the Srixon Q-Star Divide which is what I game and have been a fan of (especially that DIVIDE coloring). It's been reliable lately and the price point is pretty similar. Most of my testing will be on course testing, we have some pretty high winds here in Kansas so I am quite interested in how the Oncore ELIXR will play pitted against that. My next plan is to get access to a simulator and grab some numbers for everyone to get their eyes on so that you can have hard data to compare as well. I have high hopes for the ELIXR, I'm excited to see how well they play in the wind, and if they truly can perform in the wind and maintain low spin off the driver then they will earn a firm spot in my bag going forward!

The package has been delivered! Impeccable timing to because I was on my way home from work to grab the clubs for a post work 9. So I sat down and did

the 

UNBOXING!

First thoughts in my head when I pulled one of the sleeve was, "Wow these are crisp!" My main ball is the Srixon Q Star Divide which has a more matte color scheme so the bright whites that reflected my dining room light were a bit of a shock to me. The feel is a lot slicker than I am used to with my Srixon Q Star, it even feels slicker than my Vice Pro Plus and Nike balls that I've played it. Closest I could find to the feel was a Titleist Pro V1.

Upon closer inspection I also noticed the dimples felt a bit deeper and more pronounced than the Srixon Q Star, and the Titleist Pro V1 that I play with occasionally. I'd say the depth of the dimples felt closer to the VICE Pro Plus out of all of them. 

The more I looked at it the more I really admired the bold ELIXR on the alignment mark and the more the glossy crisp look grew on me (Which I was worried wouldn't), and I think it started to grow on the ol' pups too

With my first impressions on the looks & feel wrapping up and my tee time growing closer I knew I had to give these a try already, so I threw 2 sleeves in my bag and hit the links! 

I will say, off the tee, my first drive with it was quite a new experience compared to what I am used to! The ball definitely may or may not have gotten quite a beating with some poor play and I MIGHT have already lost one. More testing to come, just had to tease y'all a little bit, stay tuned for some updates! 
 

Alright Everybody it is time for the Final Review!

So right after the unboxing I was able to hit the links within 30 minutes for my first round ever with an Oncore ELIXR golf ball. Since then, I have lost an entire box of golf balls, I must admit that right out the gate. Water, tall grass and golf ball gremlins are my nemesis out there. BUT also since then, I have been able to put these balls through the ringer and they have seen approximately 200 holes (and maybe double that many times in the rough). So without further ado, First Impressions on the Course!

First Impressions (7/10)
Right out of the box, and onto the tee box. I would have to give my first impressions at 7/10. You get a solid product for the cost. But I still had to rate my first impressions at a 7 and here’s why. Oncore makes two big claims that I wanted to test out. The first claim states that the ELIXR will have Low Driver spin for optimal distance and control. With a slice as bad as mine, I didn’t find this true. My spin was insane for a driver, far more than I have ever seen before. On the flip side, it still earned some points because the other big claim was for superior greenside control and once, I got off the box and started hitting short approach shots, I can confirm that I witnessed this in my play. Both claims will be fleshed out further down.

Aesthetics (10 out of 10)

Swinging back to the looks of the golf ball. A lot of my thoughts about the aesthetics from the Unboxing still ring true. It’s a crisp looking ball, I can’t find a fault with the look of it. The durability of them has been stout, I’ve hit a good amount of tree roots and cart paths and they’ve held up surprisingly well despite that.

When it comes to the sound and feel off the driver, I noticed a higher pitched hit than my Srixon Q Star. I’d say the same with the putter too, it almost felt like it a stronger reaction off the putter face.

The Numbers (15 out of 20)

I have a confession. I stated in my introduction that I would grab indoor simulator numbers and I was unable to. I had to make a choice and I prioritized real world play so that the elements could play more of a factor in this test. So, for that I apologize.

Playing this ball was tough, when compared to the Q star Divide, I really struggled to choose the Oncore ELIXR if I am honest. There were hits where I felt the DIVIDE would respond to the hit I was trying to accomplish but I chose the ELIXR to continue testing. In fact, halfway through a round I just ended up switching. The amount of sidespin generated the ELIXR was absolutely killing me every shot outside of 120 yards. For that reason, I had to knock off 5 points right off the bat here. I felt I had no margin of error on my swing, when the path was great (Which is rare), the ball flew well. But if that’s not my consistent swing then the ball flew horribly most of the time. I found chipping and getting out of sand wonderful. The spin was the right amount that I felt I was accurately able to judge distances to get on the green and stop a roll in time.

On The Course (12 out of 20)

Alright, here we are. On the course, spirits were high, and spirits were low here. But a bad day on the links is always better than a good day sitting in a cubicle. But let’s get down to it because I have some things to say here.

First things first let’s start with Off the Tee, because that’s the first thing you’re going to start with and it’s probably the most you’re curious about in this review based off what you’ve already read. For me, off the tee is the most brutal part of my game and with the ELIXR I had my shoulders slumped every time I walked up to the box. Here’s why: My average drive distance with the Q Star DIVIDE with a nasty slice is about 200 yards and the slice usually puts me offline by about 20-30. I understand this is a swing problem. But with ELIXR I had drives barely cresting 150 yards on average for me, and some albeit rare were in the 130-yard range. It got so bad at one point I witnessed my ball hit the ground with so much side spin it bounced up and left with no forward roll. That happened twice during testing this ball and I have never seen that before. Overall, my distance with it got so bad that Golfshot started recommending I pull Driver on Par 3’s. On the topic of Par 3’s I saw similar attributes to the Driver when I would pull my 7 iron out. For those reasons alone I had to deduct 5 points, I needed to walk up to the box feeling confident and leave the box feeling confident and I rarely did.

Walking off the box was rough, but it did get better. My slice tends to be more playable once I start shortening clubs, but it was still rougher with the ELIXR and so I had to knock off another 3 points here because woods, hybrids were still rough. But even with the slice surprisingly the ELIXR held the green well once it hit it, the ball would sound like a bullet but if it hit that green it stuck and for that I was quite pleased on approach shots.

I’ve talked about the flight off the drives, and the characteristics were similar until about my 8 iron which I hit about 120. 8 Iron and down the flight started to feel more of what I am used to, slight slice but it had a very nice up and down with a very clean roll and stop and I enjoyed that aspect of the ball. Once you get down to chipping the ball begins to shine. I really felt I could grab a green and direct this ball if I am honest. Flop, or low hit, or from the sand, it didn’t matter because when I walked up whatever I chose I really felt I could get the ball close to the hole and that was a great feeling.

Ah and now we’ve reached putting. When I started this game, I hated putting, and now, it is the only thing that keeps me under 100. I enjoyed putting with this ball, the word ELIXR has grown on me, and I liked looking down at it. This ball felt like it wanted to bounce off the putter and I liked that. The alignment was adequate, and I didn’t have to add anything to help with that. I did have to tone back the strength slightly because of it being more responsive off the face of the putter. In the end though, as much as the putting was good, it wasn’t massively better than the Q Star that I game.

Bottom Line though, my scores worsened in the end. The chipping and putting were great, but it just doesn’t outweigh the pain of 120+ yards from the hole.

The Good, the bad, the inbetween (18 out of 20)

Despite what I said above, I do enjoy other aspects of the ball. The good would be the value, the greenside control, and the name honestly, I really dig the ELIXR name. The bad is that the ball is rough on people that have a poor swing path. It’s a struggle to reign the ELIXR in. As for the in between I did notice I had to clean this ball a lot more often than my others, the deeper dimples seemed to grab a good bit of green, but that’s not a bad thing my eyes, reminded me to clean my tools .

Play it or Trade it? (15 out of 20)

 After this review I will be switching back to my Q Star Divide. I struggled way too often with this ball. I will keep it because on the rare chance my path was straight, the ball flew well, and I hope to one day get to that point. Once there, this ball will be in my gaming arsenal. On that note though, if you are the type of golfer that struggles reigning in a slice, I can’t recommend it. If you are a golfer that can keep a straight path consistently, I think this ball is great for your money and I believe that golfer won’t find a better deal for a ball. Because I struggled to use it with my slice I deducted 5 points, but since I know this ball is a good value for the ones who can hit straight, I only kept it to 5 points.

Conclusion

Ah you’ve reached the end (Or you’ve skipped to it ). Overall, I wanted to like the ball, the value was there, the looks were there, sticking the greens was there. But if you have a bad swing path or a bad slice, I can’t recommend it. Off the tee I was significantly shorter and more offline than other balls I’ve gamed. If you stay straight, this ball is a great value for you. 120+ yards in, close to the greens, getting out of sand, or putting I loved this ball. Those times were great, but I just couldn’t wrangle this ball in when I was 120+ yards out.

OnCore ELIXR  – Official MGS Forum Review by Lee Stanek

Introduction (4/16/23):

Hi everyone, super excited to be selected to do this test for the OnCore ELIXR golf ball.  This will be my first test for the forum, and I have to say I am surprised by how much I have learned by increasing my activity and getting more involved with My Golf Spy and I am really enjoying the interactions with everyone!!  Thank you to all for making it a welcoming place to share. 

Speaking of sharing, here’s a little bit about myself.  I live in Minnesota with my wife (married 21+ yrs) and two boys Aidan (14) and Finley (10).  I have been playing golf since I was about 10 years old when I took my first lessons at a local par 3 near my house growing up.  I would use my dad’s old wooden shaft clubs to play with my friends or by myself which I still like to do.  My grandfather also used to take me out to play a lot and he really got me into the game as well.  I played a lot of casual golf in high school, less in college and grad school.  After I started working, I found myself playing a lot more with co-workers and my wife started to get into it as well which was awesome.  Since the wooden shaft beauties, I have only had 2 other sets of clubs, one of which my grandfather gave me as he got older and couldn’t play anymore.  These are the Callaway S2H2 irons and Big Bertha fairway woods that I am currently still using. I have a TaylorMade SIM2 that I got last year which I love!  I have pieced together a few wedges as well to fill out my bag.  I have been typically playing a Pro V1 but I recently got a box of gently used golf balls from my uncle who lives on a course in Oklahoma so I have really been using anything that isn’t hacked up from that box. 

As far as my game, my biggest strength is my short game.  From within 30 yards around the green I have seen lots of improvement recently and feel much more confident in hitting various clubs the right distance to get up and down.  I also feel like I am pretty good putter which has also improved with playing a little more.  Both honestly save me from being a much higher handicap (around a 20 right now but I need more rounds to see where I am really at).  My short to mid iron game is more up than down and I am working on dispersion and distance control.  Off the tee needs some work, that’s another topic for another time.

I love being on the course and being out early (but really any time will work).  I used to play before work (before kids) at a local course which was perfect but that has since changed as life does that!  Now that my oldest son is now getting more into it and with him making the HS golf team, we as a family get out a lot more often!  I don’t get out enough to have a home course, but we have 4 courses within 5 miles of our house!  Last year I played golf about every other week, and I am hoping to do it weekly this year! 

For this test of the OnCore ELIXR I am really interested in three things:

1.    For my short game, can I get the control with the ball around the green for spin and distance to improve some of those shot making tools to get up and down.

2.    For low to mid-irons, does this ball help with dispersion control.

3.    Off the tee, how forgiving is it (cause let’s face it we all need a little forgiveness off the tee!

UNBOXING - First Impressions (4/26/2023):

Hey everyone, super excited to get the box from On-core today!  Quick delivery and tightly packaged!  

I really liked the simple packaging for the boxes and the cut-out in the sleeves were really nice to get a chance to feel the ball without opening the sleeve.  

As far as the ball itself - it has a bit of a shine to it compared to others.  I like the alignment mark on it as well, I use that for putting so that is a key feature for me to make sure its big enough to see when standing over a putt.  Compared to ProV1 and others, its dimples are less defined and the overall surface is more smooth (less matte finish).  I think probably helps with the lower spin on these balls. 

I took these to a local course practice green over the weekend and hit some chips and putts.  I was working on some flop shots with a lot of loft in my club (52deg SM3) from close to the green. Typically, I get a lot of spin with ProV1 and they check up without a lot of roll out.  I could really see the reduced spin and more roll out with the Elixr.  I then tried some longer chips, around 15-20 yds and these gave me a lot more forgiveness with distance control.  This pic above was about 20 yds away on an uphill line and I was able land about 10 ft short of the pin and rolled to within 3-4 ft.  More work to come this week. I am playing an executive course on Tuesday and 18 on Saturday.  I will have more to share after these rounds!  Happy Golfing!!

My Final Review: ONCORE ELIXR

Aesthetics (8 out of 10)

Please see my intro on appearance, dimples and packaging. 

As far as some of the on-course Aesthetics, I like the simple logo and alignment aid.  I don’t generally mark my balls with a sharpie or marker, so I like to have one that allows me to use this.  In terms of general durability, it performed quite well.  I hit several off cart paths and trees during my round (not on purpose of course!) and found that they held up pretty well. I played several balls during my three 9-hole and one 18 (well 16, we were cut short due to heavy rain).  For the ones that I didn’t lose in the trees or water, they all came away without too many dings.  My game on the other hand has some work to do. 

As far as ball striking went, I have to say it felt a little flat in terms of contact and how the ball came off the club for me.  With ProV1 when I hit it really solid, I can feel it when it comes off the clubface.  However, with the Elixr, I was never able to get to the solid, clean feeling.  It also felt a little flat without a lot of pop. 

The Numbers (12 out of 20)

I didn’t have any data for this comparison.  I based this scoring on general feel during playing and practicing with it.   For short game practice, I found this ball to not have as much spin on short chip and flop shots around the green.  For my typical shots this resulted in a lot more run out on shots that I would normally expect to check up or bite more.  This was consistent between the 3 or 4 times I did this during both cool, damp and hot, dry conditions. 

On The Course (13 out of 20)

Off the Tee (with Driver or Irons I found that I was struggling with consistency in distance and height of shots.  I generally have a low launch and I found these balls to be even lower than I typically hit. 

I found this ball was about 5-10 yards shorter than my iron shots.  Additionally, I struggled with some of my approach shots being on-line.  I did not feel it was as forgiving as I am used to and unless it was a perfectly aligned contact the ball was wider left or right.  As I mentioned about, in practice these balls had less spin and would roll out quite a bit from what I am used to playing.  I tended to be okay on chip shots around the green and changed up my approach based on how I saw the ball perform but I would say it did not have a large impact one way or the other.  I had additional notes above on chipping that showed it did pretty well for run out chip shots!

For putting I found that this area was consistent with other balls I have used.  I did try some practice work on this with some larger braking puts and found this ball compared to ProV1 did not break as much.  But then again when you are at my skill level on most greens, I am trying to lag to within 2-3 feet and then tap it in for a 2-putt (we won’t mention the rest of the score).

The Good, the bad, the in-between (12 out of 20)

I can't really find anything glaringly obvious to write here about the experience that was either extremely good, or extremely bad.  I found myself really excited about getting a chance to try these new balls out and when it came down to my experience using them I just wasn't blown away with performance.  As a first time tester maybe I didn't know what to expect or how to think differently about using them or maybe if they had fit my game a little better it would have been more exciting.  I also notices that the outside of the ball had less of a glossy or slippery surface compared to other balls.  Almost like it was more tacky.  I am not sure where that is coming from but I think it might be something to think about in terms of feel and look.  
 

Play it or Trade it? (10 out of 20)

Considering what I learned while I played this ball and what I have been able to do as part of some comparison in recent rounds with my typical ball, I would probably not choose to play this ball. 

Conclusion

Overall, I was not that impressed with the feel, the consistency of iron shots, or the forgiveness.  These are three areas that I now realize are important to me in choosing a ball.  Overall using this ball during the rounds my general scoring was higher than typical.   I wasn’t very pleased with how this ball performed compared to the ball(s) I typically use.

Introduction
Hello all, I'm happy to be part of this test and hope I can give the community valuable feedback. I'm 42 years old and live in Central NJ. There's a wealth of affordable courses in my area, a dozen or so I play most often. I play all weather and all year long when able. Those interested in the TL;DR version of the intro, fear not there's a thread for that found here

Personally I hope the Oncore Elixir can be a consistent piece of equipment for me. It's main competition in my mind is Callaway Supersoft and Vice Tour. Those are the 2 I've found that have the best combination of distance and soft landing at a reasonable price. Usually I buy refurbished, but if the Elixir can win me over I'd be thrilled to order DTC and have a supply of fresh balls in which I have confidence rather than ones other people hit off cart paths and trees.

I have hours to use indoors on Trackman to get hard numbers, and on course I plan to use my rangefinder more often along with my GPS for relatively accurate yardage.

I sorted my golf balls for this. I have about 140 different label to choose for comparisons. If any forum members have specific requests, lmk and I will check if I have any.

Here's a thread that details my limited experience with one Oncore Elixir I picked up on course and used before losing, along with my ongoing "Rankening" of the 5 Vice Balls that come in a mix. Ideally Oncore will be able to climb this list when I get more experience with some freshies. 

Unboxing 4/27/23

The balls arrived today, extra dozen included to make up for a delay in shipping. I didn't notice a delay, but will take extra balls.

Testing (indoor): 

Immediately went to Trackman indoor simulator with these. Have Srixion Z Star and Supersoft new balls to compare.

Played 18 holes on the simulator using a fresh Elixir. Shot 81 with 2 triple bogeys on holes we'll say I'm skeptical of the accuracy of the simulation. The ball felt great in use, but indoor simulator is only good for so much.

I got some comparison using my drivers. Top 4 swings are the Elixir, bottom 4 are Supersoft. Disregard the middle one, I forget which was used. 2w is my 2nd driver, XR set at 12.5°

 

Same formula, 5 Elixir 5 Supersoft this time with my TS2 @9.75°

 

Used my 6i to get data on the Elixir vs. Supersoft vs. Z Star. I was inconsistent on 5 swings with each ball. I took the best 2 strikes from each and put them on paper to make a photo easier than 15 screen grabs off Trackman.

A note on durability, I don't often use my own balls indoors. The screen really destroys the cover on Supersoft. I was surprised by how well the Elixir performed in this regard. I took 100 full swings across the 3 balls, about half with Driver. The Elixir got the full round of ~50 swings including wedges. The Supersoft and Z Star only saw a driver, 6i for the most part. 2 swings each with each iron and PW, no shots with vokey or Jaws grooves. There's noticeable wear on the Callaway and Srixion.

I had to rotate the Elixir to find a spot.

First Impressions (10/10)

Product has clean looks, packaging is simple not loud and I like that. First ball I struck with it on Trackman was a drive 30y longer than my average, very nice. Lower spinning than the Supersoft I compared with, on par for distance.

Aesthetics (9/10)
Classic white golf ball with sleek but toned down graphics and packaging. A bit more reflective than the Supersoft I was using prior, that is where it loses a point. It sounded similar to other 80+ compression balls I've used, no discernible difference to my ear.
I expected the ball to be harder than the previous much lower compression ball I had used and it is, but not in a noticeable way when I handle it or strike it with a club.

The Numbers (19/20)
I found the Elixir to be more gameable for me than the Srixion divide Z Star as well as the Callaway Supersoft I had been using. It is not the winner on distance, if I were losing swing speed and seeking distance gains from a ball I'd consider other options. The Z Star actually shined in that regard.

Where Elixir wins is consistently long and true ball flight. I can't say I witnessed any magic where "perimeter weighting" was written in clouds, but on the windiest days I played, the Elixir DID find lots of FWs and hold a bunch of greens. On the Trackman I found Elixir on par for distance and lower spinning with 2 different drivers.
 

On The Course (19/20) 

Gotten out for 225 holes on 12 different courses since the Elixirs came. Conditions ranged from 2/5 stars at a muddy track with hard greens to 4/5 stars at a slightly damp public course where FWs and greens were holding well. Played two 9 hole courses on a dry very windy day, both have challenging greens. One day was pretty much perfect mid 70s and 10 mph or so wind.

I used the Elixir as my scoring ball and took every chance I could, given pace, to drop Supersoft and Zstar to attempt my best attempt at a same swing. The 9 hole courses gave me ample opportunity for this.

Comparisons at the full courses were more 2 tee shots, pick the 2nd up. It worked well, allowed me to get impressions from driver, hybrid and long iron at those courses and I got short game side by side Comparison playing 3 balls at once on holes 8-9 at an empty Colonial Terrace. The 36 Elixirs are now all in some state of "less than new" 17 lost 2 scuffed beyond playable leaving 17 with 6-18 holes use.

The Good, Bad & In Between (19/20) 

The good is throughout the review, It's hard to find anything bad to say, honestly. I deducted a point for the fact other balls I tested routinely outgained in raw distance, but that is minimal for me as I'm trying to swing a touch slower and play more in control at this point I don't want that extra yardage I might gain with Zstar or Vice Pro. The in between is the FW I was hitting quite often off the tee, in between the trees I am used to looking for my ball usually.

Play it or Trade it (20/20)

I'm going to play them and lose them, to be precise. But then I'm going to order more once I play through a good chunk of the usable balls I have.

Conclusion 

I shot my best score ever on 2 different courses, got my closest ever to hole in one and tied my best score at a 9 hole this month. Also hit a lot of fairways for me including a couple that were 30-40y more than my average. I was swinging confidently playing the Oncore Elixir. 

Final Score (96/100)

6/13/23-6 week update: Now used the Elixir to shoot personal best at 7 different courses (4 full 18s, 2 executives and a 9 hole) Today another hole in one near miss.

So if you aim 45 degrees left on a drive to counter your slice then follow me on this journey!

For my testing of this ball, I plan to compare it against the Srixon Q-Star Divide which is what I game and have been a fan of (especially that DIVIDE coloring). It's been reliable lately and the price point is pretty similar. Most of my testing will be on course testing, we have some pretty high winds here in Kansas so I am quite interested in how the Oncore ELIXR will play pitted against that. My next plan is to get access to a simulator and grab some numbers for everyone to get their eyes on so that you can have hard data to compare as well. I have high hopes for the ELIXR, I'm excited to see how well they play in the wind, and if they truly can perform in the wind and maintain low spin off the driver then they will earn a firm spot in my bag going forward!

I have a variety of clubs in my bag including many from my original starter set but I’m slowing replacing them with new or slightly used versions.  I have a Taylor Made Sim2 5 Hybrid which is my go to followed by a Callaway Mavrik 7 iron which comes in a close second.  I hit the ball fairly straight and have the ability to do much better but just can’t seem to put it together in the same round.

As a relatively new player I am still learning about all aspects of the game and the science in every area amazes me!  The ELIXRs perimeter weighting intrigues me as it promises to increase ball speed and roll.  It claims to feel better at impact and be more accurate. 

I want all of this but even more I want distance, it’s what drives me (pun intended).  It’s what keeps me going to the driving range and what I long for at every tee.  While this ball can’t change my swing or torque, I’m looking forward to seeing how it compares to the others in my bag and am hoping for more.

I’ve been using a variety of brands including Titleist, Taylor Made and Maxfli.  It’s hard to beat a Titleist in my opinion but the price typically leads me to choose another brand.  I will be comparing the ELIXR to each of these during my regular rounds of golf, at a local par 3 to see how they affect my short game and at my local park to see how accurate they are when hitting at a target (bucket in the middle of the grass field) which I’ll have pictures of as I’m testing.

Love the photos. Keep including them! Women post different types of photos than men, not better or worse, just different. I have already settled on a ball that seems to fit me but will follow you because I support more female participation on MyGolfSpy . . . and who knows, I might be enticed to try a another  ball.
