2023 MGS Forum: Cobra 50th Anniversary Special!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages.... The time has come to crown the next Cobra Challenge Champions.

@chisag @CFreddie and @Jnoble89 proved the haters wrong in steady fashion each week with strong and consistent play by all members of the team.  Only once in the 4 weekly challenges did one of the teammates fall outside of top 4!  So, Congratulations to Team One on an amazing showing and winning this years challenge in dominant fashion 43.5 to 27.

Now that does not mean @Tom the Golf Nut @sirchunksalot @JerryB should walk away with anything but their heads held high!  All of the competitors did an amazing job in reviewing the equipment and playing with 14 brand new clubs in the bag.  

I'd personally like to thank each competitor for their patience in the early going, and for being flexible with the condensed schedule once we got underway.  I hope that everyone who followed along enjoyed the competition and banter.  We had many members jump in the weekly challenges and all seemed to enjoy the challenges and how it makes you attack the course in a different way.

 

Our 4 club challenge winner was @Jnoble89 and @Ben Joest so congratulations Ben on being the week 4 member winner!

Also,  the moderator team would like to congratulate our Cobra 50th anniversary Driver winner @TSauer for his participation throughout the entire competition!

 

Thanks to all involved including our competition sponsor Cobra Golf, the competitors, and the rest of the forum staff who help to make this event manageable.

Congrats to all! I had a blast following along, competing in the trivia, and also in the 4 Club Challenge. Hate that I got busy for a couple weeks and missed out on some of it but already looking forward to next year!

I was really looking forward to this Cobra 50th Anniversary Challenge but honestly had no idea how much insane fun it would be!!!  Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU Cobra and MGS and all the Mods for putting up with our chaotic nonsense. The Mods have already thanked me privately for being one of the subtle posters and keeping the reigns in check, not letting the likes of Shanks and Jerry get too out of control. (You're welcome fellas but I respectfully turn down your invitation to become a Mod, especially after so disrespectfully being picked 4th out of 6) 

... I have Cobra irons, Fairway Woods and a Putter in my bag, that is also a Cobra Bag so how cool is that? Thanks to my team mates @Jnoble89 and @CFreddie as well as our competition @Tom the Golf Nut, @JerryB and @sirchunksalot for being such great sports and playing along with the friendly trash talkin'. And it would not have been 1/2 the fun without all those that played along, either just posting or actually engaging in a challenge. You Guys Rock!

To the Forum staff and forum members thank you for putting up with us. This entire challenge has been a total blast. A special thank you to @chisag for making me play harder than I have in a long time. My head hurts from thinking so much, my hands hurt from playing so hard (partially due to the original grips), my feet are sore from walking the course so often (7.5 miles per loop). And I would do it all over again.

Who knows maybe we can throw out unofficial challenges in the "After Hours Spy Saloon" just for fun.

To @Tom the Golf Nut, @sirchunksalot & @JerryB, it was a blast to get to do this challenge with you and I must say, it was an outstanding group of testers. 

Thanks to all the mods, particularly @GolfSpy BOS for spearheading communications with Cobra and working his tail off through some challenges with equipment getting out, and to @Golfspy_CG2 for making me the #1 overall draft selection way back when this thing kicked off. I hope I made you proud!

I’ve seen a big improvement in my overall game and the numbers don’t lie as my handicap has lowered drastically and is *hopefully* going to continue on that trajectory! 

Now to the Saloon to bask in glorious victory!!!

I want to congratulate the team of @chisag, @Jnoble89, and @CFreddie for taking the top spot in this year's Cobra Challenge. You guys were a pleasure to compete against and it was nice to get to know each of you better throughout the challenge. 

I would also like to thank my fellow competitors @Tom the Golf Nut and @JerryB for being amazing teammates and overall great guys to share this experience with. You guys are class.

Congratulations go out to @TSauer for winning the Cobra Aerojet driver, that thing looks amazing and I can't wait to see it in your hands and hear what you think of it. Personally, that driver is so good looking I'd build a case for it and put it on my wall. 

I would also like so say thank you to MyGolfSpy and Cobra for the opportunity to take part in this event. It was an opportunity of a lifetime and an experience I'll cherish forever. The most important thing I learned from this event is to have fun on the golf course and the good scores will come to you. While I didn't shoot any personal bests, I played better than I have in a long time. That means the world to me. I've said it a few times, but this challenge changed the way I think on the course.

To Cobra Golf, keep doing what you do. You're innovaters and I love the fact you think outside the box with things like the 3D printed putters and MIM irons to work toward making the best golf clubs you can for our games.

Thanks, buddy! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you guys made this a ton of fun. Part of me wants to hit the AJ to see what it’s all about, but part of me wants to take your advice and display it  it’s just too pretty.

... PLAY IT!!!!  Plenty of time later in life to look back and display things. My son gave me the best advice ever when he was in his late 20's "Dad, don't spend your money on things. Spend your money on experiences" So enjoy the experience of a free but well earned beautiful driver and let us all know how it goes.

Congrats to team 1 on the victory! Team 2 fought well and I have to say you ALL made this thread fun to follow along with. Yes I may have neglected family and friends to stay tuned to this but that’s beside the point. The reviews were awesome and as someone who takes peoples opinions into account when buying I may be looking at the fairway woods based on the unanimous high scoring from everyone. First off, I would like to send a special thank you to @GolfSpy BOS for heading this up and sound such a great job keeping up with us and keeping track of the challenges. Plus he did a wonderful job of keeping us informed in the PM thread and taking care of any problems that came up.

I would like to say I did well in the challenges, but ran into some buzz saws in @Jnoble89 and @chisag who scored some great rounds. I'm not complaining, it was good to see some PB's thrown out in the competition. I wish I could have delivered some of the same, but you have two of my better rounds in the last couple of years really speaks well of the Cobra clubs. If anyone thinks "I can't play Forged Tec X irons because I'm a high handicap", they might be mistaken. Plus, get fitted because that made a huge difference trusting the advice of an expert and listening to them on what the best setup is. 

I'll definitely look back on this fondly, from the friendships made to the memories on the course. This was the experience of a lifetime and I am truly grateful to have taken part in it.

I think all the Cobra clubs were right there with every other OEM and the fact that some of us that had been previously fitted, still had Cobra's make it into our bag speaks volumes about the performance and quality of Cobra clubs. But since I have been on the bandwagon for Cobra irons since they released their Amp Forged irons 10 years ago, this entire lineup should be at the top of anyones demo list looking for new irons. Titleist is getting a ton of buzz with their new lineup, and justifiably so, but Cobra is right there with them. Anyone looking at Mizuno 223's, Taylor Made P790's, Titleist T200's and Ping i525's should absolutely look at the Forged Tec and Forged Tec X irons. And in my opinion the King Tours should be at the very top of the list for anyone looking for some players irons with a little forgiveness as they offer the best of all worlds in one iron head.

The only reason the driver was removed was for forgiveness. The dispersion was greater than my TSI 1. Distance wise the AJ might have had a very slight advantage but really to close to tell. Even the actual numbers off my Mevo were so close that my inconsistencies could have made the difference in distance.

... I have said before, the Cobra Fly Z should be in the Golf Hall Of Fame. Best combination of distance and accuracy I ever played and my son is still playing my OG with a Nunchuk shaft. I think Cobra has tweaked the distance over accuracy and that works well for some, but like you I went back to my TM because it was more accurate and felt/sounded as good as any driver I have ever played. I do think it was just a little longer, so in the right hands the AJ could be a real beast. To be fair, the AJ isn't all over the place and the difference between my AJ Max and Stealth2 HD is noticeable but certainly not a huge difference. I may even hot melt mine in the future to see if I can get a denser feel/sound and then see if the distance outweighs the accuracy.
