How'd you play?

Played Naperbrook Golf Course today about an hour outside Chicago. My friends and I have been playing some tougher tracks lately, so we decided to play here as it's a bit less challenging, yet still a fun course. Only about $70 including a cart, which is pretty reasonable anywhere near Chicago. Weather was very nice in the low 70s and sunny with a slight breeze.

Ended up playing the blue tees at around 6400 yards and shot 84 (42-42). Definitely should've been a lower score today, but ball striking wasn't the best. Had a few good drives, especially with my 2-iron, but irons were all over the place. Two doubles and two 3-putts didn't help the score either. Finishing strong with a birdie on the recently reworked par-5 18th, which was a nice way to walk-off.

No golf for the next couple weeks as I'll be in Italy for my honeymoon. Hope to get back at it when I return in September. Until next round

Weather was hot and humid and it was CPO due to overnight rains.   Today was also the first day with my new putter.    Took a little getting used to because the ball came off the face pretty hot.   Didn't have any significant one putts but was consistently getting the ball past the hole.  The additional speed also caused a few lip outs.  

Below is the strokes gained comparison against a 0 handicap.  I'm really happy with the short game numbers.  Following the approach laid out by Dan Grieve has really helped that aspect of my game.    Tee shots were better today than they have been recently and while approach shots were the worst from a SG perspective I was pretty happy with my ball striking.

Have gone back to a blade putter; always felt like I putter better with them.  it is from the current company run by Bruce Sizemore called More  Golf.   I owned one of his models when it was under the name Sizemore.    I also wanted to try a graphite shaft in the putter so I went and got fit to see which worked best.   Installed a Va Composites Baddazz shaft;  it is a putter that won't be considered low key.

Last minute decision to play instead of just practice.  This because the course was wide open and I could play another 2-ball round as I did last week.  Following last nights storm, the weather was quite a bit cooler and overcast.  While a little humid, not bad at all with the mild breeze.

TP5 vs. AVX, 39/42 and 38/40 respectively.  Pretty average ball striking day with great chips but less than stellar putting... lags in particular.  I muscled several 5+ feet past the hole .  I did birdie two holes B2B that I don't often birdie and one that I frequently bogey .

I really worked on tempo today and also focused on not swaying.  It can be subtle and you don't think you are... but do .  I was so happy with my short chipping, I spent another 45 minutes at the practice area reinforcing that swing.  I'm using a "silent metronome" to help with the take-away and return, along with saying "turn-turn" (shoulders) to myself.  Trying to get away from being to army (hey, I like that word/description).

Since last update, I was lucky enough to go down to French lick Indiana and play both at the Ross and the Dye courses.

Thursday was my travel day from Fort Wayne down to French Lick Indiana.  My buddy and I arrived around four but the range was closed at 4:30 so they can pick and mow. We ended up getting out to the short game area and messed around for the better part of an hour hitting anything from bump & run to 70 yard pool shots and even a little bunker game.

The next we woke up to a massive thunderstorm around 7 AM and our 9 AM tee time at The Ross Corse was pushed back. It took around nine holes for me to warm up and start to get into the groove. For the next 18 holes or so (last 9 of the first 18 and first 9 of the second 19) I was playing at a pretty good 8 to 10 handicap pace. We managed to get 72. All I know is I shot 87 and 85 on par 70 but it counted like a 10 and 13 handicap according to GHIN.

Next day was Pete Dyes course. I got to the range and nothing seem to be working. I figured it was a little bit of tiredness, and a lot of trying to remember all my tips when it didn't work. Despite being "the easier "of the two courses I ended up scoring well higher in the 90s both rounds. My driver was useless, and all I could hear was either a fade or a downright slice. It was several holes where I had easy irons into greens and I just could not get it right. During the second round two thunder showers popped overhead and made us pause for about 10 minutes each. One even swept away my ball in the waste area, it was nowhere to be found after the shower.

Put it all together we played 72 in two days in French Lick with a good friend. I wish I could remember a lot of shots or anything else but to be honest with you I was more enjoying being with a friend that I haven't seen in a year. My friend has sworn off golf for the next month, and I may need to take a few days to heal up.

I got to take my 10-year-old out on the course for the first time today (after many top golf and top tracer range sessions). Small executive/par 3 course near the house. It was a blast.  The heat index was over 100 so we shut down after 5 holes but still loved it. I got my parents into golf a couple of years ago and they are motivated by the chance to play with me and the kids.  My son never had much interest in playing for real until his grandparents told him they would visit this winter and beat him at golf and now he's determined lol. Whatever it takes I suppose.

I took my wife golfing earlier. It was her first time ever on the course. I have been helping/teaching her for the past 6 weeks and we finally made it to the course. 
 

We went to a short public course, Strawberry Valley in MA. I thought it was a great course for beginners as it is a 9 hole par 34. For her first time golfing, I thought she did great. I was satisfied with my round of 3 over even though my short game and putting were pretty awful. 
 

On the longer holes, I had her tee it up from the fairway for her second and third shots to make it easier. A couple staff members made comments/jokes, but it helped make the course “shorter” for her, kept up the pace of play, and made the round more enjoyable for her (which was the main goal if I am being honest). I don’t see any issues with it. 
 

Overall, I need to practice my putting and chipping as I left at least 3 strokes out there. And my wife had a successful first round and is looking forward to the next time we can play.

I got out for 36 this weekend - 18 on Saturday with @DiscipleofPenick at Rawiga (rural area SW of here) and 18 yesterday with 7 other guys at Boulder Creek in Streetsboro. 

I really like the layout at Rawiga, but the course was in kind of rough condition - I've definitely seen it better. We played from the tips making me a 13. I shot and 86 so only 1 over my handicap. In general, I didn't feel super great about the round - Driver is still a bit iffy and putting SUCKED. Irons were pretty good, though. Sometimes I wonder about Arccos and the strokes gained thing - I missed quite a few 3-4 foot putts, yet it claims I was +1.5 strokes gained vs a 10 hc. I didn't make any bombs or have a bunch of 2-putts from super long range, so I don't know what it's thinking.

Boulder Creek is one the "premium" public courses in our area and they charge a premium, so I don't play it very often. It is also a very tough layout with fast, sloping greens. I shot another 86 and was very happy with it, given how tough the course is. Irons were the star of the show. Everything else was pretty meh. Driver wasn't great, but also didn't get me in too much trouble. I felt very good about putting, given the difficulty of the greens. I had one birdie and lipped two others (one of which turned into a 3-putt thanks to the severe slope that made the second putt longer than the first).

Saturday, late morning I played a solo round at my local nemesis course: The Links at Gettysburg.  Psychologically, I’ve let several holes intimidate me early on, and they’ve given me trouble ever since.  The course has a lot of tough holes, especially playing from the blue tees, magnified by the notoriously unpredictably swirling winds the hills and trees create.  
 

But I’ve worked hard this summer on my mental game: picking small targets, focusing on positive outcomes and visualizing shots in my pre shot routine.  I’ve also been doing daily golf mobility, balance, and strength building workouts and picked up about 8-10 yds of extra carry per club since the start of the season.

So it all came together really well, and I shot 39 on the front (+3) and 35 on the back (-1) for my best round 74 at the Links.  The front included a double bogey on the par 3 #3, playing 178 into a light breeze, water on three sides, and a waste area behind.  I just lost focus on the target and swung just a little too aggressively and pull hooked it pin high but up against a waist high naturalized area and my first attempt caught a milkweed stem and only went about 5 yds.  My second try was much better but coming out of the rough got no spin and ran it by 12’ and couldn’t convert.

But my big win was making par or birdie on four out of five of my ‘mental’ holes - just by staying in the moment and focusing on one shot at a time, staying loose, and playing my carry numbers and covering hazards.   

It definitely helped that I was by myself and was able to get around in under 3.5 hrs.   Looking forward to playing in more competitions this year and next, and set my new goal to break 70 before the end of the season this year.

I was able to play 9 on Friday and it was a rollercoaster! 

After the first hole, I thought I was going to set a course 9 hole record!  It was a par 5 and I hit a beautiful 290yds drive on the left side of the fairway. Then I hit a 4hy 215 yds (carrying a water hazard) to the front fringe of the green. I nestled a 60ft Texas wedge to 2ft and tapped in for birdie! 

Doubled the next.

After that it was a series of poor approach shots and poor chip shots that lead to 4 straight bogeys. 

The 7th hole was a nice par to hop off the bogey train.

The 8th hole I had the best chip shot of my life. I pulled my approach 7i 30 yds left of the green and left myself short-sided to a highly elevated green (20 ft of elevation for a 30 yard shot). I opened my 58* wedge and played a full swing flop shot that landed 1 ft on the green, spun slightly to the right and dripped softly into the hole for a birdie! Because of the elevation, I couldn't see it drop, but my playing partner (and brother) went crazy!

I ended the round with a nice par on a confidence inspiring 7ft putt.

Stats:

FW: 2/7 = 28.5%
Playable drives: 6/7 = 85.7%
GIR: 2/7 = 28.5%
Putts: 13 total, 5 two-putts, 3 one-putts, 1 zero-putt, 0 THREE PUTTS!
U&D: 3/8 = 37.5%

@jbern in my world the opening hole birdie pretty much guarantees a double is coming soon!  . I once started birdie, birdie, then par to keep my hopes up then promptly went double, double!

Played 9 again at Bixby Village and kept a scorecard today. Ended up shooting 7 over, but it was the best round of golf I think I've played in all facets. The Qi10 was on point on the couple of par 4s I could bring it out for, Irons are just really consistent right now and I'm digging it, wedges were really good today (as I wait for the SM10s to arrive) and no 3-putts is a great day. On the 9th hole, I cleared the large bunker that lies in front of the green and on, 30 feet from the pin. This is the hardest green on the course, I left the putt 2 feet short and was so close to my first birdie. It will definitely come soon if I keep playing like this

Played 18 at my club yesterday and had an awesome round. Matched my PB after starting bogey bogey. The driver was on fire for me yesterday and I didn’t hit a bad drive all day. It was one of those rounds that didn’t feel fantastic when playing but was just nice and steady.

Solid from a day where I didn't feel like I struck the ball well at all.  But, fortunately, today I was a scramblin man.  5 Up and downs combined with my very mediocre 4/18 GIR scratched out a 41/38 79 for me.  My approach and tee game were wild -- yet not really that far off.  I just got punished severely on every miss and found myself hitting from very odd (new to me) places around the green.  I made it work though and my wedges and putter bailed me out.  28 Putts and 8/15 GIR.  Not too shabby all things considered.

shot a PR 85 today and felt like I was grinding all day long. Driver is hooking, iron and approaches has been saving me kind.. and putting is well meh. Feels like I’m a bit par or bust (double bogey) right now. Gotta clean some of that up and I’m staring 79 right in the face!

all that said, there is 95 coming somewhere for sure!

and I couldn't putt to save my life, but the Driver was almost perfect (9/14 Fairways) with 3 misses in the first cut... and the new clubs are getting dialed it...

the 60* was a lifesaver and put me close on several holes but my putting was so poor... 3 putted twice on the Front 9 and 4 putted twice on the Back (both Par 3's)...

Almost a really good night in league last night. 6 pars, a bogey, and 2 doubles. I missed a 4-footer for birdie (wasn't even particularly tough - I just pushed it), but otherwise putted pretty well. Other than a shanked 7 iron on a par 3 (that led to one of the doubles), irons were pretty good again. Driver was still iffy, but I only had trouble on one hole that required a punch, but I still walked off with a par on that hole. Everything was a push-fade (and short?!?!) and I could not get it to start left. I've talked about the 8th hole at our league course - right is death. I thought I was being smart pulling a 3w to keep it in play.... Topped that 3w and barely made it to the Sr tees , so I had to hit it again - this was the other double. By my calculation, my handicap is going back up to a 6 this week. I'm not super happy about it going up 2 strokes this season, but since the next 2 weeks are playoffs, the season is winding down so I guess I'll have to live with it and get after it next year.

Redemption round for last Thursday!

Summary: Went back to Kiln Creek Golf Club & Resort for my 2nd time to see how I could fair now knowing the course a bit better. Was very happy with it for the most part. Driving was worse as I somehow just lost the feeling mid way into the front 9 and it shows on the scorecard... But it did allow me to test my skills in the rough again haha. Once I got the feel back it was on ending the round with 5 pars in a row!!

Bad: Gave away alot with losing the feeling for the driver swing. Unsure how this happened but it is a new feeling so takes time to engrain and I had to just work thru it. Chipping was still mediocre at best, left alot short as last time I was hitting them way long and it cause alot of long putts which we all know you can grind on but so long during a round....

Good: Grinding away honestly. Walked away from the round very satisfied knowing the 80's are right around the corner! Just have to keep those triple & penalties off the card which is easier said than done but enjoying the new driver swing and engraining this feeling that is so foreign but works so well and make effortless speed!!

Ok, so it wasn't just me yesterday. Made absolutely nothing on the greens. Five or six very makeable birdie putts. Norhing!
