I don't have the money to get fitted for clubs but I might be in the market for a new set of irons. I would probably buy a pre-owned set from eBay. I am 6'1" with 110 mph driver club head speed. I currently use Mizuno MP-60 4-PW with true temper stiff shafts +1/2 inch. Should I be swinging x-stiff? Should my clubs be extended more?

I would try and get into a golf shop and maybe hit some demos. See if you like the X-stiff or not.

Personally I would save my money until I could be fit properly.  I have spent a bunch of money over the years on clubs that weren't right for me.  On a side note most golf "mega" stores will allow you to demo clubs.  If you demo Ping irons you can at least get your proper lie angle per their color code chart.  Also, Mizuno and others allow you to interchange shafts during a demo.  With this information you could put something together that might be close.  But you will always wonder until you get fit.

How old are the mp60s? Do you plan to keep them when you buy your new set? If not, you could probably trade them and use the credit to get fit and buy from a store. Not sure where you are but an Edwin Watts type usually has pre-owned and even could make adjustments if needed.

I'm also 6'1 with around the same swing speed. I couldn't do x-stiff, should be fine with stiff. Length is your preference. I'm standard but everyone is different based on posture obviously.

There is no way to know what will fit for you without some trial and error, or a good fitting. It is definitely worth putting a few extra dollars aside for ($100 tops) and then you can look for the length/lie/shaft/head options out there. I would even try to be friendly with a couple guys at a local store if you have one (golfsmith/golf galaxy) catch them on a slow day and I bet they'd work with you on a few things without cost. I wish I had known more about getting fit for everything when I got my irons, with the information available today, there's almost no reason not to get it done.

Flip side: I'm 6'-1"; 104 mph driver swing speed, and I'm fit into X flex in everything. It's not all swing speed. Your transition, etc has a LOT to do with it, as well as the shaft itself. What's a stiff or an X-flex anyway? There isn't any standardization between mfgrs. As others have noted, you really need to try some different shafts and see what "fits" you.

Good points and very true. I had an x stiff R7 for awhile. Felt like I was swinging a telephone pole.

Based on numbers alone (110) they're gonna tell you x. But definitely worth some time at Big Box and tell them you want to try some different iron shafts. I do it all the time. That's what they're there for. Obviously they want you to buy from them, but any reputable shop will help you out. If they don't, go to another shop.

I'm 6'4" and I have +1" now, but I used to be +1/2. Unless you have unusually long or short arms, +1/2 should be just fine.

There is no spoon.

the MP 60s are 10 years old roughly. I bought them a year ago pre owned but in great shape. I would probably trade them in if I got a different set of irons and liked them enough but the value for trading them in is only like $70....

Sure the information is out there. I probably have enough knowledge and feel for my own swing to sort of fit myself by going to a golf galaxy and swinging different shaft/head combos. Thanks for the tips. Also anybody have any good places to buy a pre owned set of irons? I got mine on eBay through 3ballsgolf. Felt like I got a steal for the MP 60s

You can try your local PGA Superstore, Golf Galaxy, Golf Smith, and Roger Dunns. They have used clubs and if you get lucky, you may find a decent set of clubs. I know PGA Superstore offers free fittings on a first come fist serve basis and also a paid fitting. Hope you find what you are looking for.

I agree with many suggestions here. What's the rush? Save your money up and then go get the whole fitting done. I may cheap out on some things but not my golf. Unless you're magic you can't really guess your way into proper shafts. And besides.... they're all different. One man X is another mans R. There is no standard. Get a fitting man.

Normally they take whatever the fitting fee is off the set of irons that you buy so in essence it is free.  My sense is that would only apply to new irons, but can't confirm that as fact.

Wow - I understand the dilemma - Normally I would agree with Plaid but your comment about being in college came afterwards.

Are you on a college golf team?  I would think that would give you access to quality fitting.  If not how often do you play?  It might be best to live with what you have until such time as you are out of school and moving forward in life.  If you're playing good golf right now you run the risk of "fitting" yourself into problems that don't currently exist.

That's coming from experience - I've been there and done that.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD
