    How'd you play?

Played Frankfort CC with my high school friend of over 50 years. Course was immaculate! I can see why he recently joined. Handicap index is the same as my home club in Florida, 14. I shot a 44/45:89 today. I am most proud of my Par on the Par 3 #10…..the elevation drops over 80 feet to the green just across the brook running in front of it. I landed on the green about 12 feet behind the hole and my lag putt stopped hole high just two inches beside the cup. On one of the Par 5’s they had a flag noting the best position for your drive…..I almost nailed the flag! BTW, I played a yellow Maxfli Tour today and did not lose any! Love my Maxfli’s!

  3. Just one of those shots that you envision and then execute perfectly. Pushed my drive a little right on No. 17. There is a large tree that is literally on the edge of the fairway. From the tee I was certain I cleared the tree, but I caught a terrible bounce off one of the top limbs and the ball basically dropped straight down 169 yards to the flag. Semi-obstructed shot with trees preventing me from going straight at all but the most left part of the green. I originally had 8 iron in hand and was going to aim for the left part of the green and hope for a long two putt as the flag was back right. Not sure what got into me but decided I could pull off a cut 7 iron instead. For once I had everything just right when trying to hit a cut and it was one of the most beautiful shots I think I've ever hit in my life. Landed and stuck about five or six feet behind the flag. Now, unfortunately my birdie putt slipped just under the hole which makes this story a whole lot less compelling. But still, the approach was incredible.

  4. My thoughts, I have had close to 10 sets of irons over the years. Usually it only take a round or two to get the feel for them and to dial in the distance if you are staying in the same category of irons (super game improvement, game improvement, players distance, players). Once you change category's there can be a bigger learning curve. You have the AMP's which is a game improvement iron. The AMP stands for advanced material placement, which means that weight is strategically placed in the head of each club to help improve performance. There is also a larger off-set from the shaft to the face than a players distance iron typically. You now have a smaller margin for error in squaring the club face and less mass on the sole. The mass on the sole helps get the ball air born easier. Now that you made the category switch it might take a little bit longer to get your swing dialed in to the new clubs. The old clubs masked some imperfections in your swing due to all the game improvement features and now you have to fine tune the swing a little bit more. It will come quickly so don't get discouraged. Believe it or not I played game improvement clubs all the way down to a 4 handicap and only switched to players distance a little over two years ago. So I went through the same adjustment you are going through. Another few rounds and you will be fine.

  5. So you’re sayin we need to take a tape measure??? Is this a golf outing or are we building stuff

  6. My thoughts: 1. Fitted clubs does not guarantee better ball striking. Each day my swing is slightly different so one day may be more toe and the next more heel. We also don’t know how different the clubs are with regards to swing weight, total weight, length, lie angle, etc. 2. Some clubs are just way different and it probably takes a range session to figure out the idiosyncrasies. 3. I don’t always hit the center of the club nor do I expect to based on my skill level. How are you defining hitting them well? As a 9 you probably have decent ball striking skills and hit some bad or really bad shots. What are you seeing that is raising the concern? Too much pressure on yourself to hit them well and justify the cost?

  7. What are we looking at here?? Somebody's best lag putt?? I am sensing an east vs. west contest! The outing prep has started... TommC23 with the Pork, me with a chiropractor visit!

  8. I applaud those that can play steel shafts. With a steel plate, 13 screws and an inch of my hip in my left wrist, I must play graphite shafts to minimize ant vibration. As a graphite shafter, I am excluded from this trial because the graphite is an up charge. I have reviewed three sets of Cobra irons with MGS; BioCell, King F6 & King F8 full bag. If any of you have any doubts concerning Cobra equipment, don’t. It’s as good as they come. I look forward to reading the trials & reviews. Best of luck to y’all! BTW, I’m waiting arrival of the T300 Titleist irons I won in the US Open pool.

    How'd you play?

Stunk it up today. Ball striking poor, putting stunk, scoring proved it. 43/43. Went out later with my wife ( she’s just learning) and played 3 holes and I shoot 1 under. Go figure.

I just tried selling an older car on craiglist and within a few days I had been flooded with over 200+ emails offering either full price or full price ++, cash in advance and without even asking about the condition of the car. Some even indicated that they had a trailer on the way to pick it up. No scammers here...right? I'm done with craigslist. Edit: this was a 'project' car and not in working condition.

  16. Ha! I'm only 37 and I switched to yellow last year. Though part of this is from memories of playing with my dad as a kid. In the late 90s I only remember stuff like Pinnacle & other distance balls coming in yellow, so those are the ones my dad gave me. I used to play them all the time. Now it's nice to see that they are making the better balls in yellow too. I play the Z-Star (hope next year they release the Diamond in yellow), and I have 2 doz of the Maxfli ready to go.

  17. I played yesterday in our Members League. For 9 holes it was a continuation of my good play from Saturday, putting up a 41 on the front but my personal “Gauntlet” is the first 4 holes on the back 9 of our Davis Love course. They got me again today, big time. How big? 8 over on the 4 of them, and to be honest, the heat got so bad (we teed off at 1028) I really didn’t care. I just wanted it to be over and be done with the round. It was a total breakdown… from driver to putter. I somehow finished birdie par, which at least kept me under 50 but I ended up with a 49, which added up to 90. Obviously, I wasn’t close to cashing. The plan was to go out and play 18 again today, but this heat has been relentless. After 9 holes, my buddy and I bailed and headed back to the clubhouse. That will be it until Saturday, when the forecast calls for more of the same. Low 90’s, high humidity, heat index over 100. We keep saying this heat wave has to break soon, but there’s no end in sight right now.

    How'd you play?

Had a lovely nine holes and a new record for me. 9 holes zero lost balls! It included a par on a long par 3 over water. I hit into a bunker just short of the green. Out of the bunker in one to 4 feet and made the putt for par to record a sand save.

  20. I don't remember seeing anyone who objects to players joining LIV to improve their earnings so the Mahomes et al example is nonsense. The opponents object to who the money is coming from and for what purpose, e.g. sports washing. And it doesn't help that LIV players give every reason in the book for why they joined, instead of just admitting it was for the money first and foremost. They're not fooling anyone... If it wasn't the outsized Saudi PIF funding LIV, we wouldn't be having this debate.

  22. Set up my LX+ this week and figured I'd document this for anyone else having trouble syncing their H4 to their phone. On initial setup, the app asks which product you have. Both the LX+ and the H4 show up as options on that page. I selected LX+ and was first prompted to pair the H4 with my phone. It paired succesfully, but threw an error saying pairing was unsuccessful. It still advanced to the next page where it prompted a firmware update. Again, it seemed to update successfully but the app said it was unsuccessful. Again, it let me advance. Finally, it attempted to upload my home course to the H4 and this time actually errored out. It prompted me to restart the app and H4, and try again. After restarting both, the H4 no longer showed the initial "connect to app" screen. However, the phone couldn't connect to the H4. The app brought me back to the initial "Which product do you have?" screen, and all attempts when selecting the LX+ failed to connect to the device. No instructions seem to exist in the documentation for resetting bluetooth pairing, so I was stuck. However, once I selected that I only had the H4 device, it immediately connected to the device and all app functionality was smooth sailing. tl;dr: If you are configuring a new LX+ device, just tell the phone app that you have an H4. The iOS Shot Scope app likely has a bug and doesn't play nice when you select LX+ during initial setup.

  23. Very good thoughts. So far, I've been pulling the ball more than I would expect with the irons. Part of that is definitely my swing needing to tighten up (I haven't played much over the last two weeks) and part is probably not squaring up the club face properly yet. Definitely a different look and feel to the club, so will take some getting used to. I probably am putting too much pressure on myself! Really awesome information. Thanks! This definitely makes me feel better.

  24. A range session to get familiar with the feel again after a fitting. A round on the course helps me understand how the ball is reacting on the greens. Depending on what “inconsistencies” I’m seeing i see if it’s ball flight then maybe have the loft and lie checked. If it’s contact on the face then that’s more than likely my swing and not the clubs

Them old boys at my course said they are going to take away my Cleveland clubs because since I've been gaming em their pockets are getting lighter.

    How'd you play?

I went to Flagstone today to play nine holes and see how my stamina would hold up after dealing with Covid this week. I can't say I played to bad considering I'm still not up to my usual amount of energy and the fact I was rushing a bit considering the heat index was brutal. I shot 56 with 16 putts, that's with one 3 putt and a 4 putt from 14 feet on 5. I made up for that a little bit on 6 by sinking an 18 footer from the fringe. Overall, it wasn't a bad day. My driving was mediocre, iron play was pretty good, my chipping was horrendous (way too many two chips), and my putting was its normal self except for the 4 putt. I lost two balls on errant drives that led to a couple of 8's on par 4's and I feel like if I could have cleaned that up, I could have shot better. I just got gassed and was trying to hurry up and finish. What I'm proud of is the fact that I was sticking to a better pre shot routine and was hitting the ball better from the fairway. It wasn't perfect, but it was progress and I'm happy with that. I did manage to make par on the par 5 6th hole from a really bad spot. My drive was a pull hook that landed between tee boxes on 5. I hit decent 5 wood to the left edge of the fairway, I then hit a great 3 wood 30 yards short. My next shot was a chippy wedge that landed a hair long and left of the pin just off the fringe. I hit the 18 footer into the heart of the hole for the par. I feel like I've still got a long ways to go to get my game where I want, but am happy with being able to pull out some good shots today. I'm fairly tired after the round, but it was a blast getting out and playing.

  33. So, as an update, Jose Rob and I were discussing tee's and playing yardages and what to do on the courses for tees. In essence, we're going to let y'all decide what tees you want to play from but figured we'd drop in here to As mentioned earlier in thread, The tips on the River are almost certain too much for us mere mortals (ahem ahem @Jmikecpa not withstanding) so For the River we're suggesting Blue only for our longest hitters (carrying it 230ish on the reg due to forced carries), A mix of Blue and Gold for most, and Gold as an option for our older brethren or shorter hitters with White available for those who want to go off the very front as well. For the Lakes, The Greens are the equivalent of the Blues, the Blues are the Blue/Golds, Blue/Gold is the Gold and Gold is the White. I'll post yardages, slope ratings, everything in thread here in a minute.

  35. This is a pretty common occurrence with players who get "properly" fit the first time. A lot of times, golfers playing off the shelf game-improvement irons will be using club with a relatively light shaft that may or may not technically be a good fit for them. Then they play those irons for years and get used to them. Then they go get fitted and put into a more "industry standard" weighted club and suddenly everything feels different. I know many are also getting fitted into SteelFiber shafts and that is causing people some grief regarding lack of feel because as good as those shafts are from a numbers perspective, they aren't a direct replacement for steel in the feel department. I don't know if the shaft and weighting feels dramatically different to you but between the large change of getting fitted, you're also going from a GI iron head to something less forgiving. You're going from a relatively wide soled GI iron with a low and more rearward center of gravity (COG) to a narrower soled players-esque club with a significantly higher COG. So you have two or three notable changes in clubhead design that makes the JPX less forgiving but that isn't necessarily bad, just different. The JPX921 Forged aren't the narrowest of clubs so you will have a little sole to work with but it's not going to be quite like your Cobra shovels. The higher COG is probably what is making the clubs not feel as good or consistent. Golfworks measured the JPX Forged 6-iron to have a 0.844" COG. The ball has a COG 0.84" which means that in order to have a solid feeling strike with the Mizunos, you must either strike slightly down on the ball or find another way to get the club's COG slightly below the ball's COG. You may have guessed, but the COG of the club has to be at or below that of the ball for a "solid" feeling strike. So if you take into account the change in shafts and club head characteristics, it's not a surprise you aren't striking the ball as well. However, unless they did something weird and put you in graphite when you're used to steel, you're new irons will probably be good for you. It will just take some time and maybe some lessons. These irons might be showing some of your swing deficiencies that the old Cobras were maybe helping you compensate for. Good luck with the new sticks! Edit: I just saw you got fitted into the DG120 S300 shaft. That is likely a dramatic change from whatever stock shaft was on the Cobra's. The original Amp irons had the Dynalite 90s, so you're new shafts may be 20+ grams heavier with a significantly different bend profile. This will definitely take some time to get used to if this is the case.

  37. Everyone has their unique swing but many amateurs have bad movement patterns. If you read the thread his swing was asked for to help determine what was going on with the numbers. Numbers are just that with our any context. Now that we have his swing we can see why the results aren’t optimal for the ball speed he is generating. And center of the face contact means nothing if the face i too open too closed to the swing patch and if the swing path is to much to either extreme the ball isn’t going to go where the golfer wants it to go. Not to mention the op is trying ti get better so identifying where the issues are will help him improve and have more optimal results

  39. In 2019 I bought a new set, Callaway Mavrik Pro's from TM Burner 2.0. It took me 2-3 rounds playing to get used to them. Looking down at them they just looked different, and it took me a little to get the club set on the ground, and squared up, and an address position that results in good contact.

  42. Last week was the first round I put the XV back in play after playing through my leftover TP5s... In contrast, the check around the greens was obscene. I was getting the ball to check up from the first cut with a 60* and my stock low cut 50* pitch was a stop and E Brake moment on several holes. Considering how long this ball is, I am still in awe of how well it performs around the green.

Like you, I rode today. I figured with the heat it might not be the best idea to walk. I'm still recovering after being home for two hours. I was planning on getting out on the riding mower this afternoon, but I don't think I'm going to do that.

    How'd you play?

I have played everyday this week since Sunday. Been working on some equipment changes on the bottom side of the bag Now I have not played vintage this week but have been concentrating on equipment changes on the bottom end of the bag. A friend of mine who is a Titleist staffer gave me a brand new in the plastic a SM-5 L grind 58* wedge. I fell in love with it. Got to looking through the stash and found a SM-4 50* in good shape, Suspect it was from either my late friend Little Bear or my other late friend Wild Willie. Anyhow played it Monday and made adjustments Monday afternoon. Bumped it up a notch to 51* mainly for some extra bounce. Worked out good and both wedges have outstanding feel. The main change was in both the putter and my technique. I had been studying Faxon Pavin and Crenshaw. Had went back 2 weeks ago to a Bulls Eye that I love everything about. Fellow MGSer Motoboss and I had discussed round putter grips on the putter thread. Got into the stash and found 2 NOS Lamkin round leather wrap grips. Put one on the Bullseye. Putted lights out with the Bullseye last Saturday. I also adopted my own style with the thing. Line up on the ball relax my hands and open the left side some. I do not worry on the mechanics any do not know if sometimes I wrist stroke or pop stroke it all I knows it has a good chance of going in. Played 18 early this AM and it was rough. Course wet from dew plus they have started mowing in earnest. Kinda like raking hay in the fairway. No roll at all and the roughs are plush and ankle deep now. I played 1 ball and played the ball down. Did ok shot +3 (75) with no birdies but several lip outs which at least I am hitting the hole. Had some up and down par saves. Really without any roll it was tough into some of the par 4s. But had to get creative some when I caught the edge of the rough. On hole it was deep and if I was in the fairway it would have been a float cut 9 wood or a stout 6 iron. I had to hit a low cut 4 iron flyer that got hot over the green. Where I ended up I was lucky to get it down in 3. But I went back to my game plan and plotted myself around the course. I have been getting caught up lately too much in the Scramble mode. This week I am going to put on my binders and go back to playing my game. One of my partners will not like it but to heck with him. He had something smart to say last week about the Bullseye. I snapped my Stu growl back at him and told him not to worry about what was in my bag worry about what was in his. I do not think he has ever seen a Bullseye in the flesh. He is right before me kicking him to the curb. Supposed to play tomorrow Good Lord willing. Since I have been on my little golf marathons I have dropped weight again and have loosened my back up feeling pretty well
