Popular Post DriverBreaker
Hello again Spies! Tony (37yrs old) here with another review for the MGS Forum! I have been blessed to do several reviews for the Forum in the past, however I am EXTREMELY excited to test this Hack Motion system! It has been on my personal radar for quite some time to purchase to help my students in my own golf coaching. I currently run Player Development and Internships as a professor in a Professional Golf Management (PGA) Program at a large university in North Carolina. My job mostly has me helping others improve their own golf games, but I have been playing more lately. Currently, I play off a 2.6 handicap and I still hit the ball a long way off the tee. I currently primarily play a fade with every club, so I’m very interested in seeing how I personally hit a fade and what my wrist conditions are to achieve that. I know my swing direction, club path, face angle, attack angle, etc. from extensive use of TrackMan, but the actual biomechanics of my wrist conditions are something TrackMan can’t measure. TrackMan tells you the what, but not the why. I have what most would consider a very strong grip (3.5 - 4 knuckles showing on the lead hand), so I have to play more of a body rotation/hold off release, at least that is what I feel, to hit my fade. As much as I am looking forward to testing this for my own game, I’m most excited to help my own players out. This seems like a very valuable training/teaching aid to help students understand what their lead wrist is doing and how it correlates to the club face at impact. This literally could be a game changer for my coaching. I’ve watched lots of videos on the Hack Motion system for my own education, so I am fairly familiar with the system in general. Let me know if you have any questions before we get started! First Impressions (10 out of 10) This has less to do with the physical product, but more to do with the entire experience. I was very impressed with the onboarding call with HackMotion. They took their time to walk through each aspect of the app, calibration, and resources. Speaking of which, I think almost as useful as the device itself is, the online resources they give you access to are invaluable. For the golf data/biomechanics nerds out there, this is as deep of a dive as you can ask for. While much of it might be overkill for the recreational golfer, I do believe that if you know the why and how, you have a better chance of executing the what. Calibration was seamless the first time out of the box and I’ve had no issues connecting it since. Very fast. Another thing I appreciate about HackMotion as a company is that they aren’t really making astronomical claims about a magical pill that will instantly make you a better golfer. This is a combo training/learning aid. You get out what you put in. Aesthetics (18 out of 20) The device itself is very sleek. Looks a lot like an apple watch or something with the matte black finish. It is light weight and does not really inhibit your swinging motion like some other wearable devices can. I have very small wrists, and the band seems to be sufficient for me. They might be wise to include a few different size options though for smaller bodies. It is super small and you could easily store it in your golf bag without any issue or added weight. The Numbers (18 out of 20) This one is a bit tough for me. I’m a 1.1 handicap right now and a golf coach/professor. So I know my swing. I will say that this device has helped me reduce practice time and allows me to maintain my swing with less time/effort than before. Hitting those green “in range” numbers every swing lets me know I’m within my tolerances. Then I can focus on whether or not it is my alignment that is off, low point control, tempo, etc. I will say this, you MUST ensure that your device is calibrated correctly first. Make a few swings and check to see if things are drastically out of whack. Do a live test where you move your wrist into extension and flexion to see if it matches the screen’s avatar. Save yourself some wasted energy first. The numbers in the pro version are phenomenal. Flexion, extension, radial and ulnar deviation, rotation, and tempo. This data is now measurable in real time, swing after swing. No more looking and guessing where you’re at. You can measure directly. From a coaches’ perspective, this is superb. When a player is dialed and swinging lights out, I can now go back and compare data to see where they are doing their best. Then on days when it is out of whack, where are we losing it? I also like how HackMotion acknowledges different grips and how the numbers need to change for each one accordingly (see example below): Practice makes … ? (14 out of 20) As I said in other posts, the device is only as good as the user’s understanding of the data interpretation and then decisions related to. If the user is not willing to invest in coaching alongside of the device, or do a deep dive into understanding exactly how A leads to B for each part of the data, it is a rabbit hole device like no other. Same for Launch Monitors. The tool is only as good as the user’s understanding and interpretation of the data and how to adjust it. See the video below where I show how it could be fools gold, as you can still hit green numbers even with a stall flip, thus why understanding the graph data is very important. https://youtu.be/FAt5KrA5s2w The good, the bad, the in-between (13 out of 20) I love this device for full swing data. Putting…….. it’s practically useless until they fix the issues with it. I do think they could add in a way to change clubs during a session, so that you can hit multiple clubs and see where you struggle or where you do better. I found the pitching/chipping to be ok, still not as good as the full swing for reading each shot (I got some miss-reads like I did with the putting). Play it or Trade it? (10 out of 10) For my needs as a coach, I’m definitely keeping this. It is another data point that I can add to build the full image of a golfer’s swing and game. But it is just that, data. The real work comes with what to do with the data. That is where a machine/device loses to a human. The diagnosis and practice plan needed to address the issues found are, in my view, best addressed with a good coach. HackMotion, to their credit, provides all the resources you need to work on your game after you get the data, so there is no fault to them there. I just wonder how much a recreational golfer will be willing to invest in their own education to know how to maximize the use of this device. If you aren't going to learn how to interpret the charts/graphs (see below), what's the point. The potential is massive, but at the end of the day, what is the user willing to do? That’s something each buyer has to decide for themselves. Conclusion (TLDR) In short, this is a very powerful device that is easy to set up and use. The data it provides is extremely valuable in the right hands. At the end of the day, it is a useful as the user is knowledgeable on how to maximize and utilize it. Either invest in education around the device and biomechanics of the wrists in golf, or get a coach you trust to use it with and let them build a practice plan around using it. Do not just beat balls with this device without a sound plan, because, like any piece of good technology, it could be wasted time if you do so. Popular Post Fongle
G’day all! My name is Toby, and I just want to start off by saying thanks to MyGolfSpy and Hackmotion for the opportunity to test the HackMotion Pro. This is my first testing opportunity here at MGS, and one I was really hoping to be able to test ever since I saw the initial announcement, so I’m really excited for this one. A little bit about me I’m 33, and live in Queensland, Australia, and I started golf at 7 years old when my dad first took me to the course. I live with my eternally patient fiancée who I will be marrying in October this year (so long as she doesn’t come to her senses before then ), and I work in IT Support. I grew up playing tons of golf and rugby league, and was a scratch golfer when I was younger. I had a pretty severe accident in my mid teens that caused a lot of knee issues and I’d had to stop playing rugby after that point, and competitive golf a few years later. I finally had surgery at the end of 2021, and since then I’ve been working at getting back into golf again. I currently play off of a 7.8 handicap, and I’m absolutely loving all the golf tech that’s come out in recent years. I love hard data and numbers, which is why I bought a launch monitor last year, and I’m really looking forward to having more info on my actual swing beyond just clubhead speed. Currently I have all my golf data in a spreadsheet, and it will be interesting to see how being able to work on my swing using the HackMotion Pro will affect that data. I’ve looked at the HackMotion site and reviews on Youtube, and it looks like it has an absolutely massive amount of ways to take the information it gathers and help apply it to improving your game, like giving specific drills for different types of shots, giving real-time audio feedback mid-swing, and giving full session summaries to review everything later. Long term, I’m hoping this will help with my consistency overall, and my confidence in my short game, both of which I struggle with at times. If it can do that, it's definitely something I'll be using moving forward. I typically play once or twice a week, go to the range a couple of times a week, and practise on my putting mat multiple times throughout the day and I’m planning on using the HackMotion Pro doing all 3. I’m really interested to see the hard data between mishits vs. the good hits as opposed to just comparing the feel of them, what the recommendations are in the drills vs how I currently swing, and then seeing how I can apply that information to improve my game. I definitely have on days and off days on the course, and I’m really looking forward to being able to go back and review what I was actually doing and what worked when my game is working well. Currently waiting to hear about the on-boarding process HackMotion will be doing with us, and will post an update once I've received the unit and have some initial impressions Hackmotion Final Review First Impressions (9 out of 10) Packaging was clean, professional, and no-frills, and I appreciated it not being filled with needlessly plastic wrapped contents. It was extremely easy to set up and install the app, create an account, and then connect the sensor to my phone (and tablet). It did seem odd to me though for what is otherwise an extremely expensive bit of kit, that it didn't include any sort of carry case at all, because I'm not really a fan of just tossing a $999 USD device into my golf bag to go to the range, and ended up just buying a mini tough case for it. Aesthetics (19 out of 20) Sensor: It's a very small, well made device, and it's very unobtrusive to wear. The component quality feels great, and the straps and clip are easy to change and use, and feel like they'd be quite durable. Tiny little device, even in a small case it's barely the size of my wallet. My only feedback would be to rubberize the inside of the straps, just so they grip a little better and can't slide. App: The app is very clean, intuitive to use, and the UI is very simple to navigate and find and use the features The training features are easy to find and use, and and the unit guides you through the process of what to do and how to do it when using them the first time. Lots of tips and support available through the app and on their website, and offer the ability to book a video call with their support team through the app to discuss feedback which is fantastic Screen_Recording_20230704_212015_HackMotionGolf.mp4.004700f95c3318f7b278d7bd2cf4f279.mp4 The Numbers (18 out of 20) This is a bit tough, as it's a training device for helping with your overall swing, so beyond comparitive scores before and after using it, it can be a bit subjective, but I genuinely think the HackMotion has helped my game. My natural shop shape is a high fade, and my miss is typically a short, weak push right, and since I've been actively working on the different aspects of my swing using the device, I have noticed I'm hitting more consistently, and able to trust my shots more. My short game is definitely the weakest aspect of my game, but I've found from working on my shorter shots over the last 6 or so weeks and using the feedback that the HackMotion has given me a better idea of exactly where my bad shots come from, and then how to work to fix those, and I've recently been playing some of my best golf in a long time. The only part it really hasn't helped at all has been with my longer putts, as the putting aspect really hasn't worked too well for me, with it showing inconsistent numbers, and being very finicky with the calibration. I did also have an minor issue when using it on one occasion it would sporadically record a massive spike in extension that was more than I could even bend my wrist to replicate, but that only happened on the one session and hasn't happened since. Practice makes … ? (16 out of 20) Having the HackMotion has definitely motivated me towards trying to actively isolate and work on different aspects of my game, and I think with the features and information it provides it can definitely do that, but it can be hard to wade through the mountain of information it provides to get to the important data. As has been mentioned by other testers here, unless you're actively willing to learn and be better, and understand what the numbers mean and how they translate to your swing, I don't think you'd get much out of the device. I definitely found myself going down a bit of a rabbit hole early on with the data and trying to match my swing to how it told me I should swing, before settling down and instead trying to work on my own swing just being more consistent and repeatable. Unfortunately as well, there seems to be no way to use the unit without making contact with an actual ball. I tried some practice swings at home, and even chipping practice balls down the hallway, and it won't detect them as a shot at all, which is a tad disappointing given how smart the device is. The Good, the bad, the inbetween (14 out of 20) It's a fantastic device for working on your golf swing, but it has a lot of caveats. I've definitely seen an improvement in my game since using it, and it's easy to set up and use, but it has some issues. Currently, there's no way to assign a club while in a session, so if you change clubs midway, and want to seperate the data, you need to close the session, select a club, leave a note and save it, and then start another session. There's also no way to flag shots as you hit them as good or bad. Especially when I'm trying to work on consistency with shot shapes, I'd love to be able to flag a shot after hitting it to know if it's one I want to go back and review individually later, but currently the only way is just trying to remember what number shot it was in the list afterwards. As I had mentioned above as well, I did also find the putting practice option to be fairly pointless as it gave inconsistent numbers and wasn't helpful. Play it or Trade it? (7 out of 10) I will definitely be keeping and using it, as I genuinely think it's helped my game, and I think it will be very useful when I'm trying to help friends who have recently got into golf. It would be very hard to justify the pro version we received to a regular golfer though, as the $999 cost could definitely go a long way towards a fitting, lessons, and more suitable equipment for a lot of players instead. For a coach or teaching pro however, I can see it being an invaluable tool for teaching players of all levels from beginners to professionals. Conclusion The HackMotion Pro is a fantastic device for working on, and improving your golf swing. It has an easy to set up, intuitive app, multiple modes, and gives a wealth of data. It is however, extremely expensive as far as a training tool goes, and it's hard to say if most golfers wouldn't see more value out of lessons and fitted equipment instead. Knowing how to use the data it provides is also very important, and requires active investment into learning and understanding the biomechanics at play. Popular Post gingerbeast87
Good afternoon everybody, Thank you to MGS and Hackmotion for the chance to test the Hackmotion Pro system. This is my first ever testing opportunity and I am extremely excited to get going! My name is Ryan, I am 35 and from Bristol in the UK and I work as a civils groundworker. I am just starting out on my golfing journey, I've had some lessons with a fantastic instructor (Josh Mayo of Windmill Academy in Bristol UK) and found a real love for the sport. I play two or three times a month with my beautiful fiancee Tabby, and love hitting the driving range after work to practice when I can. I have a Garmin watch which I use every time I play, and love to sit with a pint after the round and go through all of my shots to try to isolate what needs the most work. I've had use of the trackman system at the local range which I have found to be brilliant for seeing what needs adjusting in my swing. Practice aside, I am still a high handicap player. I hope that the Hackmotion Pro system will help me isolate some of what is going wrong, and will aid me in improving. The website describes a system that looks like it gives you good real time feedback on your swing, active adjustments that can be made during your practice, and drills to work on maintaining proper wrist structure. As you can see below (data captured from one of the local ranges), I have a fairly wide dispersion of shots. I am hoping that time spent with the Hackmotion Pro system will aid me in narrowing the range a bit. My aim for this test is to be able to see if I lose much in the way of swing structure when I play, and to hopefully reduce the amount of slices that occur. Whilst my iron work is by far the best aspect of my game (remembering of course the high handicap), it still needs a lot of work. I hope that the system is able to help with my driver as well as irons, wedges, and putter. In order to accomplish this, there are going to be a fair amount of driving range visits. The chipping green, and putting greens will also be instrumental in testing the Hackmotion Pro system. Looking forward to getting started with testing soon. Once it has arrived I'll upload an unboxing post with initial impressions, ease of setup, and anything that might be useful. Speak soon everyone, and thanks again to moderators for selecting me for this test cycle. Hackmotion Final Review First Impressions 9/10 Sleek black box, nicely presented device, tiny little instruction pamphlet. Am I speaking of any mobile phone that you buy nowadays, or the Hackmotion? Fitting well into modern minimalist trends for newly purchased electronic devices, the Hackmotion system presents itself to you as a fun new gadget to play with. Once the companion app is downloaded, the device synced up, you are ready to roll. Aesthetics 18/20 The look: Simple design Inexpensive but rugged feel The strap needs to be held in a certain way to prevent it from pulling out, necessitating a full removal and reseating of the strap. Swapping between the glove mount and the hand strap is a little fiddly, and you are all good until the mount snaps. Ease of use: Man alive you couldn't find an easier device to get on and started with. Until you get to the calibration. Then unless you are completely level, you will end up seeing incorrect numbers and potentially harm your swing. Fits in your bag nicely, owing to its relatively compact size, you can pop it into your golf bag and leave it there until practice time. Instructions: Predominantly web based. Lots of tips on their app and website for how to use it and get it set up. Regular emails giving tips and a pretty robust community support program in place. The Numbers 18/20 What I was shooting before? 110-115 What am I shooting now? 105-112 Worth £1000 for 7 strokes off a game which could possibly be attributed more to the time spent on the range as opposed to using the device *rocks hand back and forth*. Fairway hits have increased, but I have had a loss of distance (not surprising when an adjustment is made). The 75 yard range chips and pitch shots have increased in accuracy which is brilliant! Absolutely no improvement to my putting however. That remains as much of a wild card as before. Focusing more on the amount I flex my wrist has helped a lot, and made me see how the club face angle and approach changes with this factor taken into consideration. I noticed that my forearms were more achy after practice since using the Hackmotion device. This didn't surprise me as I could understand that flexing the wrist more during the swing made me work my forearm more. Practice Makes....? 18/20 Having this weapon in my arsenal did make me want to get out there and practice. There is definitely something about wanting to beat your last streak for perfect hits, or perfect positions on the backswing. I love games and gaming, so the want of beating my high score is fairly deeply entrenched. They say variety is the spice of life, I prefer garlic, but there is enough variety of types of shot, distance, club type, to create a well varied practice. I would be able to focus on say, my 7 iron one day, and my driver the next, and I would know that there is either a drill to use, or a data set to compare to that would encourage me to use the device. I would be able to see during the practice sessions that I was making adjustments to my angles on my backswing. I would find myself holding on the backswing to adjust my wrist before following through, or I would stop, go back to address, and start again if I didn't hear the magical noise from my phone. This made my sessions at the range last a little longer, and allowed me to be a bit more patient when practicing. I was always pleased with being able to sit down and go over my shot data, along with recordings of my swings I was able to see what I was doing well, and what could use some improvement. But as we all know there is nothing out there that will fix a swing overnight, this is merely a tool to help long term improvement. The Good, The Bad, The In-between 16/20 The Good: 1:1 representation on the screen is perfect. If you've ever wanted to slow down your swing and see exactly what you are doing with your hands and forearms, then you couldn't ask for a better visual representation. Having data to compare your swing to is brilliant, it helps in understanding your swing and what factors affect your impact. The Bad: Putting sensitivity Chipping on short distances is non-existent If you are even slightly off when calibrating then you will be watching incorrect numbers and potentially forcing yourself to make wrong calls when swinging. The In-between: The range between the device and your phone is not fantastic, when practicing putting you will most likely end up walking a good 7+ meters from your mobile phone. Means that you end up dropping signal a lot. The drills are a useful basic tool to get you to warm up, but are a bit lacking in total. Play It or Trade It 9/10 Definitely play it. For all that is said and done, I have noticed an improvement to the accuracy of my swings. More with my irons than anything else. You couldn't trade the device anyway because whoever bought it would need to buy a license to use the app. Conclusion For the cost of the pro system (just short of £1000), I would say that your money might be better spent on lessons. As an example, the local driving range has a pro that charges £175 for 6 half hour sessions. So I could get around 36 lessons for the price of one pro unit. I don't know how many people out there would have 36 lessons across their time playing. The flip side is that once you have the pro license you have it for as long as Hackmotion remain in business and the servers are running. The self-guided learning is ok if you are figures oriented and can understand the data that is being presented to you. For example I would hedge that one of the reviewers who is a golf coach had a much easier time understanding the data and how his swing impacts it than I, a golf scrub who has been playing for just over a year, did. TLDR: If I hadn't been given the opportunity to test it, I would not buy the pro version as a casual golfer. If I were an instructor who had a club that was willing to invest, then I would 100% get one. If I were to buy it, I would be happy with the clubface control mode only and could swallow the cost of the basic version. Would I recommend buying one? If you've got £295 and you want a training aid that will give you reliable feedback on your swing, and the ability to see how your clubface is controlled, then yes I would recommend the Hackmotion Core package. Final Score Boiled Down to a Number 88/100 Final Thanks I would like to thank MGS for giving me the opportunity to test the Hackmotion system, and the devs for the continued support for my first ever community test. I'd like to thank Hackmotion for providing me with the unit, taking the time to partner with MGS, and the continued support of the team during the testing cycle. I'd like to thank my partner Tabby for helping me with photographs and support during the test. And lastly I'd like to thank the community for the responses to my updates, I hope the review will be of use to you all, and good luck in the future. Popular Post Bad Golfer
Good morning, I'm John from just North of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. I work at a steel mill as a Pipefitter. I'm married and have a daughter that just finished up her first year of college. I would like to thank MGS and Hack Moition for giving me the opportunity to test out, review and improve my struggling golf game! I'm a late bloomer to golf at 45 years old as I had only played a couple of times until last year when I caught the golf bug and jumped in head first. Before that I was and still am a avid archer but archery has taken a back seat to golf. I used to practice archery every day and I would consider myself a scratch archer. So why is hitting a darn ball sitting still on the ground so hard? SMH. I have a Gamin watch and also a Garmin R 10 that I practice with pretty much every day. I usually hit into a net out in my yard and try to play 18 holes at least once a week and also play 9 holes every Thursday in my local golf league. My handicap is around a 23 and has stayed there for a couple months now. This is a example of how often I practice. I probably practice to much. Lol I'm hoping that the Hackmotion can give me some consistency to my game. The best parts of my game are my irons and my approach shot. I'm very inconsistent getting off the tee box and my putting has been horrendous. Some days I pull everything, some days are fairly straight and other days I slice and do all three. I hope that the drills they recommend will give me the skills to become a more proficient ball striker. Also I think it will also be great to see what I should be doing while putting. Here is a pretty good how example of how inconsistent I am. The YouTube reviews that I have watched on the HackMoition have been very good so I'm extremely excited. I'm looking forward to receiving the HackMoition so I can put It through its paces and give everyone a fair and honest review. HackMotion Final Review First Impressions 10/10 My first Impressions on the HackMoition were very positive. It was packaged in a nice high quality box and everything inside it had a spot so it wouldn't rattle around. All you needed to do to get started is to download the app and pair it to your phone through Bluetooth. The onboarding call that I received from Martins was professional and he went over the device with me and all of the features that it has. Aesthetics 20/20 Out of the box the Hackmotion censor reminds me of a smart watch. It is light weight and is lighter on the wrist then a Garmin S62 golf watch. It is very sleek and professionally made of high quality molded plastic. Durability seems to be good and I would treat it like a expensive watch. The device is easy to get up and running as it connects with the app very quickly. As far as sizing goes it is a one size fits all approach with a elastic band for above your wrist and either a band or a glove clip for the lower part of the unit. The unit would easily fit into your golf bag. The Numbers 15/20 When i started using the unit I was running right around a 23 handicap. I got it down to a 20.1 for a week and now i have relapsed a bit to a 21.9. I did notice that my shots were a bit straighter. As far as distance that didn't change at all because of better contact. I did notice that my consistency to ball striking in general has gotten better. Practice Makes 15/20 At first when i received the unit I couldn't wait to practice. I usually practice everyday anyway but this was something new to help me get better. The Hackmotion was very easy to setup calibrate and get started. I ran through a bunch of the drills to get the feelings of what my wrists are supposed to be doing during the swing. My contact with the ball slowly got better even though I had trouble staying within the desired ranges that the device wants you to get into. Lately it seems like a bit of a chore to practice with it. It seems like if I get the top of my swing in the desired range it is difficult for me to get into the proper range at impact. If I don't worry so much about the top of the swing and just focus on flexion at impact I make better contact with the ball. Pitching practice at first was very strange as it wants you to get your lead wrist into a very cupped position. After watching videos on Hackmotion's YouTube there was a demonstration of why the wrist should be in that position and showed you how to make that shot. The Good, The Bad , The In Between 15/20 The Hackmotion censor has had excellent battery life, fits my wrist and hands well, and is lighter then my normal watch. It sets up easy and connects quickly with the app. It provides so many ranges of information it can be quite overwhelming unless you are a golf junky that knows your swing and the numers that go with it or if you are a coach geting baseline numbers for a new student. The device for the most part works as it is supposed to. I did have some errors while putting with it and also while hitting the driver. When putting it was so sensitive that if you just tapped your putter on the ground without even hitting a shot it would register a shot that you would have to delete out. I also noticed while hitting a driver it didn't register a few shots. I'm not quite sure why it would be so sensitive when putting but would fail to register a shot while driving it. As far as putting Practice goes I think it would be helpful if you are really wristy in your putting stroke but if you already have a good firm stroke with proper technique I'm not sure it would help you much. Play it or Trade it 5/10 While I think this device is great I'm truly on the fence. It gives me so much information that I honestly really don't know what to do with all of it. I have been slowly figuring it out while watching and listening to all the information they have available on their website and YouTube. It is really cool to see your swing on a graph and comparing it to a pro but you have no idea how they got to those positions. If your a coach or a seasoned golf nut looking to hone in on a particular part of your game then this is the device for you. I couldn't justify the $1000 price tag myself for me to purchase unless I really knew what all the numbers meant and how to properly use them. Conclusion TL,DR This device is will give you all the information you could possibly ask for as far as what your wrists and hands are doing though out the whole golf swing. It gives you ulnar/radial deviation, wrist flexion and extension and also rotation and even tempo of your golf swing. If your a intermediate Golfer like myself I think you could definitely go with the cheaper version and not the pro version. I didn't think the putting feature really helped me at all except for verifying that my putting stroke is not wristy. You will also need to spend a ton of time going over Hackmotion's website and YouTube to get the most out of this device. I think using the Hackmotion while with a coach would be the most beneficial for myself or for another intermediate golfer. The coach would be able to explain to you how to get into the proper positions in order to match up to the wealth of information the device gives you.
