About TPT Golf

TPT's parent company, NTPT, is more than just a golf company. The Swiss-based company was not initially associated with the golfing world. With a background in making fine watches as well as marine, aerospace, motorsports and aeronautical parts, they transferred that knowledge and experience to the golfing world.

TPT (Thin Ply Technology) has a fully integrated process for making their golf shafts, starting with their resin formulation and extending to the end result of shaft manufacturing. By maintaining control throughout the entire process and using automated processes, TPT shafts offer "no fiber off-axing, no parasitic bending during swings, and tight dispersion" by using continuous winding with "one start, one stop."

TPT recently partnered with L.A.B. Golf to make specialized putter shafts, resulting in two wins on the PGA Tour and one on the Korn Ferry Tour.
The science behind their golf shafts is impressive and has resulted in some bold claims which we want our members to put to the test.

What Is Being Tested?

TPT Golf released a series of golf shafts they call the "Power Range." The Power Range of shafts includes a driver, fairway wood and hybrid shaft meant to deliver a consistent feel in all three, allowing for "each shaft and swing to feel the same."

This is where their "3 shafts,1 feel" slogan comes into play.

"TPT's Fairway Wood Shafts aim to make fairway woods more forgiving and accessible for all players,” the company says. “We designed our fairway woods to achieve a higher ball flight than our driver shafts, improving golfers' performance. Utilizing the same technology as our drivers ensures consistent contact with your fairway woods on the clubface to create consistent results.

“About our hybrids: We designed our hybrids to achieve a higher ball trajectory, aligned with our drivers and fairway woods shafts ball flight trajectory. Utilizing the same technology as our drivers and fairway woods, the three shafts will feel the same."

TPT SHAFT REVIEW

INTRO:

Hello fellow Spies,

My name is Bill and I have been involved in the Forum since last November, however, I started using MGS as a source for unbiased product reviews in the Spring of 2023 upon returning to the game after an extended hiatus, approx 6 years, due to shoulder injuries.

I retired 8 years ago, and we returned home to North Texas after many years and various assignments during my career. My Bride of 42 years has a different spin on my retirement, simply advising me that I did not retire, rather, I have undergone a change in management. She also frequently reminds me that while I love golf, my true calling is collecting golf clubs. This calling has led to more than a few timeouts from various golf shops over the years. I would be remiss if I did not admit I am currently serving a timeout from PGASS. I have been involved in the game for well over 50 years with time outs along the way for various reasons.

I am thrilled with the opportunity to be fitted and review the TPT Shafts and want to thank the MGS staff and NTPT for allowing me to participate.

While relatively new to the golf world, NTPT has made strides in product design and development of manufacturing processes to eliminate inherent flaws related to shaft spine and concentricity associated with conventional fabrication methods. The shafts have undergone rigorous testing and have been validated with acceptance on the professional tours with multiple wins to date.

I, like most golfers, would like to see a gain in distance, although, at this point in my game accuracy and consistency are of greater concern to me. Once the strength of my game, my ability to get off the tee satisfactorily has been missing in action so to speak. On rare occasions this ability returns, and I score well. I am eager to see if the TPT shafts live up to the claims of improved dispersion along with the potential for added distance. Additionally, the promise of "3 shafts-1 feel" intrigues me as feel is so individual and subjective in nature. This will definitely be a topic of discussion during the fitting process with Jon.

While the fitting is scheduled for the afternoon of the 10th, I am really excited about the fitting session with Jon Sinclair. He is noted as an expert in many areas, including but not limited to, TrackMan and clubfitting.

I will use the following three clubheads for my testing and review purposes: (all are Titleist products)

Driver         TSR 1    9 deg

3 Wood      TSR 1    15 deg

Hybrid        TSR 2    18 deg

For data collection I will be using my Rapsodo MLM for range sessions as well as scheduling a couple of TrackMan sim sessions to help document performance data. I have order the Shot Pro H4 for use in collecting on course data. 

I am anxious to get started and see how these shafts perform!

Initial Impressions: (19 out of 20)

I cruised over to Jon Sinclair's Facility to pick up my shafts last Friday with a great deal of anticipation. I was not disappointed. Jon assembled the shafts to our various club specifications and provided precise club head weight requirements to attain the desired swing weight. While I wait for the specified weights to arrive, I have applied lead tape to begin testing.

Appearance: The shafts are subtle yet engaging. They are a matte charcoal grey color featuring the natural carbon fiber material used in the manufacturing process. Two coats of a clear matte topcoat are sprayed not only serving to enhance this appearance but seal the carbon material as well. The yellow TPT logo decals are also a matte finish and provide a nice but unobtrusive "POP" of color to the shafts. The decals are a repetitive full 360* wrap and are visible regardless of shaft orientation. As there is no shaft spine to be concerned with this provides for consistent visual when making needed club head adjustments. This does, however, create an issue for those who prefer the "logo down" appearance unless the decal is removed. Although this is a minor issue and one which is of no concern to me personally, I deducted 1 point for those who prefer otherwise.

Feel: The "one start-one stop" method of winding the carbon fabric to the mandrel produces a very smooth feel and a gentle continuous profile which is enhanced by the final sanding operation in the production process. They have a light feel to them although they are 68g, 77g, and 87g for the driver, fairway, and hybrid respectively in the 17 LO shafts. This creates a nice awareness of the club head when handling the clubs. While this gives an initial sense of flexibility in the shaft during waggling, they are not whippy by any means.

First Swings: There is a consistency of feel through all three shafts that I can best describe as soft yet firm at impact. There is no sense of really having to get after it to load the shafts. Smooth and purposeful intent provided very good initial results of ball flight and distance. I experienced a better sense of feel for club head location on mishits but not the harshness experienced with previous shafts.

Hoyoymac here from the coast of Georgia.  Retired to this area about ten years ago with my wife to golf and fish year round and I live about 40 miles South of Savannah, GA playing over 200 golf rounds a year most often at the Sapelo Hammock Golf Club.

Despite this testing opportunity initially being offered only to Texas residents I was so excited to test the new TPT shafts that in my entry I volunteered to pay my own way to travel to Texas for the shaft fitting with Jon Sinclair.

Thanks to MyGolfSpy and TPT Golf for recognizing my enthusiasm and allowing me to participate in this wonderful opportunity to get fitted for and test the newest TPT golf shafts.

Why am I enthusiastic about TPT golf shafts?

Over the last few years I’ve observed this start-up company come in to the golf world and quickly establish itself with the most discerning players on the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, World Long Drive circuit. These players have tried, put into play and won with these shafts.

I believe that the TPT Golf process to make golf shafts is a disruptive technology in the arena of golf shaft manufacturing.

As a golfer looking to gain distance and reduce my down range dispersion this makes me eager to see for myself how these shafts will benefit me too.

Here’s how my golf game looks at the moment:

The three clubs that I will be testing the TPT Golf shafts in are:

Driver - Cobra LTDx LS 9.0

3 wood - Cobra LTDx 15 deg. 

5 hybrid - Cobra LTDx 24 deg.

My Arccos smart Distance with driver:

This driver is currently paired with a Diamana ZF 60S shaft. Being played currently in the Neutral Draw setting.

The 3 wood is paired with a Graphite Design Tour AD DI 7S shaft and is set to 16.5 degrees.  This has been the best fairway wood I’ve ever had.

The 5 hybrid is paired with a Fujikura Fuel Hyb 85g Stiff shaft.  This hybrid has a bonded hosel, so I have just bought another one to receive the TPT Hybrid shaft that I get fit into in order to compare them.

I will be testing these golf shafts both on the course using Arccos to track statistics and on the range using a Rapsodo MLM launch monitor to gather data.

Also getting back to Swing Speed Training with the Stack System right now and will be trying to incorporate some of Martin Borgmeier’s protocols into my training.  Martin is currently using the TPT golf shafts to compete in World Long Drive events.

The Fitting with Jon Sinclair is another exciting component of this shaft test.  These shafts are premium products and a comparable premium fitting just makes sense to get the most out of them.

The shafts I’m currently playing are among the best quality available using traditional shaft manufacturing technology and processes.  I’ve been fit for them and they’ve been tweaked after the fitting through trial and error.

It will be very interesting to see how the new TPT shafts compare!

Initial Impressions: 10 out of 10

The Fitter, Jon Sinclair, built the Power Range 18 LO Driver shaft, 17 HI 3 wood shaft and installed the 17 LO in the 5 Hybrid that I had left with them and sent them to me.  

When I unboxed them I was really impressed with how good they looked.  These shafts are eye catching with the bright yellow design and the matte black visible carbon.

He also sent me a text message with the amount of weight to add to each club head to get them to the Swing Weight that we determined was best from the fitting.

Took them to the range before playing with our Men’s Golf Association and stood them up in one of the bag stands and soon I had a crowd of guys coming over to take a look at them.

Started by taking a few swings with my Cobra LTDx LS Driver 9.0 deg. Set at standard. Used my Rapsodo MLM to capture some data.  Forgot to use foot powder spray on the driver. The impacts were all practically in the same spot though.

 

Then took a few swings with my Cobra LTDx 15 deg. 3 wood set at +1.5.  Following is a picture of the face showing 3 shots all in the same spot.

 

Then on to the Cobra LTDx 24 deg 5 hybrid.

By this point there were a half dozen guys watching me hit some shots and asking me questions about the shafts.

Used foot powder spray to capture a few shots with the hybrid.

 

The word that comes to mind to describe these three shafts is STABLE.

TPT Golf has made the claim on their website that the 3 shafts all have one feeling.

I AGREE!  They all felt the same.  They all felt really strong, stable and smooth.  No real noticeable kick sensation.  Just powerfully fluid.

Another claim of theirs is that Dispersion will be tighter with their shafts.  I found that also to be true.

Took them out on the course and proceeded to shoot 73 today.  34 front/39 back.  Won Low Gross in the competition today and was plus 6 on my points quota. One of my 3 birdies held up too.

Was 71% on fairways hit with Driver today. and a couple of the misses were off by only 1 or two yards.

On one of the par 5s, I used the three wood on my second shot and was over the green.  That club is a good ten yards longer now than before.  

The same with the 5 hybrid.  Went long on #15. 189 yards to the pin.  Hit the green beyond the pin and rolled off the back.

To say I’m impressed is an understatement.

These shafts are Frickin’ Awesome!

Can’t wait to play with them again tomorrow.

My Background:

I think the first time I played golf was around 1978. My dad took me as a fourth during one of his monthly rounds with friends. Throughout high school I would occasionally go with them, but I had other interests. I took golf as my PE courses in college. Then played a few times a year until 1997. That year, I moved to Greenville TX, and there is a 9-hole municipal course that I could go to after work and play for $8. I enjoyed it but I was never particularly good at golf. I moved from there in 1998 and joined my current club.

In 2002, I became self employed and started traveling around the country and decided I would stop in every state and play golf. Maine is the only state I have never been or played golf in. Although Alaska was an island with no golf course, so I took a wedge and practiced pitches. So, I have now played in 49 states, 9 countries, 4 continents, and Puerto Rico. (Not sure of that classification.) 

In 2008, I changed my focus to Europe and began working on projects there. In 2009, it occurred to me that at 2pm my time, it was 9-10pm there. That meant any questions that came up could be answered hours later and no one would care. 

At this point in my life, I doubt I could break 100 without mulligans and moving the ball and gimme putts. My 50th birthday was 5 years away, and I was going to be a scratch golfer by my 50th birthday. I set aside 3 hours a day to practice and focus on different parts of my game. Spoiler Alert! On my 50th birthday my handicap index was 0.2. 

That was short lived, but I maintained a 2-4 handicap for about 5 years. My long game was never great, very steep and a ton of spin, but at my peak, I averaged 8.75’ from the hole inside 100 yards and made 90% of my putts inside 8’.

At this point, I took about a year off from golf because of an injury. Then a few weeks after I came back to golf, another injury, then another ….. the past 4 years have not been kind to me. My handicap has ballooned as high as 15.7. These injuries progressed into osteoarthritis in both knees, right ankle, and left hand. 

For the last year, I’ve been participating in the MGS Virtual Golf Tour.  This has really provided me with the focus to get back. Particularly towards the end of the year. It’s been frustrating because if I can keep the ball in play, I can score well. But my lower body doesn’t want to behave like I want it. I can start out playing well, and then suddenly I can’t make the same swing as I did at the start of the round. Or shoot 76 one day and 91 the next. Usually, it is 35 to 39 on one side and 46-51 on the other and the front or back doesn’t matter.
 

I’ve chronicled this journey in another thread trying various swing techniques, and finally have a shallow, in-to-out swing that gives me low spin. Too low for my Ping LST clubs. 
 

My long game is still my weakness. The lower spin with the wedges is currently hurting me, but I’m adjusting to that. The long game stats have been as bad as -6 . Approach shots fluctuate between + and - 2. My short game has been as good as +3 and -1. But my putting is +3 to +5  I’ll be tracking the stats on these clubs in the intervening days and hope to have a good comparison of before and after. I plan on playing at least 7 times before then.

My fitting is the first on the agenda. March 10th in the morning. I’ll be taking the Pings (although I’ll have the TM’s in the car in case he suggests a different route.) I briefly considered trading the Pings for a Qi10 variation, but I elected to take the Pings because it will be easier to increase ball speed, consistency, launch AND SPIN. Rather than increase all that and decrease spin. 

I recently had to change to mid-launch, mid-spin shafts for these Ping LST driver, 3 wood and hybrid.

Testing Mechanism.

I setup a different club in my GolfShot App and will have approximately 8 rounds with these head and shaft combinations before my fitting. Once I have the TPT Shafts, I’ll compare the stats. I will also pay for some time on the launch monitor because “on course” data can be deceiving.  Sunday alone, I had a 258-yard drive on 5 with the wind and a 168-yard drive on 15. One with the wind and one into the wind and uphill. I feel like they are both equally well struck. 

I’m very excited about this opportunity and look forward to informing you of the fitting as soon as possible after the 9th.

Fitting with Jon Sinclair

After trying 3 times to add my fitting to this only to have the whole thing crash, I’ve posted elsewhere and added the link.  
First Impressions (20 of 20) (added 3/31/24)

Initial Impression (20 of 20):

Today marks the completion with my first weekend with these new shafts, so I thought I would write out my initial impressions. I do not have the weights that were recommended for my 3 wood and hybrid, yet.

First, the looks. These shafts are not painted, just 2 coats of clear coat. The carbon is visible and they are a black smoky look with a bright yellow sticker in the upper portion of the shaft. While I am generally conservative in my likes, I wouldn’t mind if they were totally yellow because I love the flash on golf shafts. But they are not painted. Overall, they look awesome. 

These shafts are much different than the Graphite Design Tour AD DI 6S than I was playing before in the driver and variations in the fm and hybrid. The very scientific waggle test made me question the wisdom of the shafts selected for me by Jon Sinclair. We sort of “eased into” this shaft and in the intervening 18 days between fitting and delivery I had forgotten how they felt.

It should be noted that this lead time was solely because of this review. If we would have paid cash money for these shafts we would have left with them in the bag that day. Originally, the factory was going to ship them direct to us, and not deplete Jon’s inventory, but then it was determined they would ship them to Jon, and he would build them. I’m certain that the adjustment to these would have been more seamless if I would have had them immediately. Even so it was more me than the shafts. 

The first day, Friday, was not very good. On the front 9, I used the driver 5 times, the 3 wood 3 times, and the hybrid 3 times. Absolutely terrible results. On the 10th hole, I remembered Jon chastised me for not swing hard with them, so I decided that after a 48 on the front, it was not like I as going to ruin a good round so I started swinging more aggressively. These became totally different shafts. While they feel “loose” with a waggle, they feel “stable and powerful” with a full swing. 

My swing is a work in progress but has improved all weekend. Also, my irons and wedges were simply atrocious today. My putting was good as usual. 
This is the strokes gained stats from March 13th when I shot an 80.

This is typical of my rounds. I have 7 rounds with a score of 80 in GolfShots. My Strokes Gained off the tee all range from -2.89 to -6.95. Approach shots range from +0.54 to -5.8. Short Game from +2.8 to -2.8 and Putting ranges from +3 to +5.4. Obviously the long game is the worst part of my game. 
Here is today’s 80 stats.

As I said, today the irons were not good at all. I actually bladed two shots that skipped a couple of times across water hazards and still got on the green. One which I holed out a 45’ birdie putt, causing my competitor who had a 3’ birdie putt to call me bad names. Wedges were disappointing also. 

The driver came around on the back 9 on Friday. I would say the 3 wood began to show drastic improvement on Saturday and hybrid today. After the round my competitors brought up how much my long game has improved with these shafts. Although the guy I covered up his birdie was still unhappy about that. 

Based on the reduction in the strokes gained I give these shafts a 20 of 20 on initial impressions.

Introduction:

Let me start by saying how much I appreciate this opportunity and big thanks to MSG and TPT. Also to John Sinclair for his time in for the fitting. My name is Zack, I was born and raised the Dallas TX area and lived here most my life other then a few years in California for college. I worked in the golf industry throughout most of my 20’s primarily in a teaching role where I was a lead instructor for a city course teaching both adults and kids then an indoor facility with Edwin Watts. I have moved into IT engineering for my career and I am a single dad. My son is starting to have some interest in the game so I get to do some practice with him but the majority of my golf is sneaking out after work when my son is at his mom’s.

 

My Game:

A little on the history on my game. I started playing 24 years ago in high school. I picked up the game pretty quickly and was constantly shooting in the 80s by end on freshman year. My last few years of high school was was consistently in the high 70s. My game was at its best in college where I got down to scratch. Throughout my time in the industry I didn’t keep a handicap but my average score was mid to low 70s with a bad day being high 70s. After years of averaging about 1 round per year I played a handful of time last year and have got the bug again. I still don’t keep a handicap but currently averaging about 8 over par when I play. For a few reasons, I still don’t get play as much as I would like so I practice more than I play currently but with my analytical, perfectionist mindset, I enjoy practicing.

 

Manufacturer claims and My Thoughts:

TPT has a proprietary manufacturing process that allows for ……..You know what they explain it better then me. So give it a watch, I’ll wait

This has me very excited as if this it true I should see a noticeable difference in dispersion and hopefully from this distance due to the added confidence and ability to play a softer/ligher shaft.

 

How I plan to test:

Going to start by comparing the shafts in the SIM bay against my current for launch, spin, ball speed, distance and dispersion.

Current shafts:

Titleist TSR3 Driver - Graphite Design AD DI 6X and Accra TZ6 55 M5

Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond 5 Wood - Graphite Design AD TP 7S

PXG 0317 Gen2 22 degree Hybrid - Aldila NV Blue 90S

And obviously I will have to put them to the test on the course and what performance benefits it can provide. For these to stay in my bag the primary thing would be dispersion as that has always been the weakest part of my game. But of course some added distance along with that will be welcome.

 

Initial Impressions: (10 out of 10)

Since Jon our fitter had the shafts sent to him so he could build them I was able to just pick them up so there was no unboxing. But Jon also let me know how much head weight needed to be added or subtracted from each club while there. Since I knew the weights I had in the driver and 5 wood I knew I had what I needed already at home and Jon gave me what I needed for my driver. I will need to find some wights for my PXG Gen2 hybrid but for now I have just removed a few of them to get the correct weight. Overall my initial impressions are very high. I love the looks, I am sucker for good matte finish which these have just a few layers of clear coat so you can see the graphite which has a unique look I am assuming it due to their patented manufacturing process. Add to that the matte yellow that really pops and makes them standout.

The feel and performance during the fitting and the first range session are great and confidence inspiring. Here are quick highlights from the range.

Lastly even though getting fit from Jon Sinclair is not something everyone looking at these shaft will get to do but I was lucky enough too and it was a great experience. You can see more detail on that here

This driver is currently paired with a Diamana ZF 60S shaft. Being played currently in the Neutral Draw setting.

The 3 wood is paired with a Graphite Design Tour AD DI 7S shaft and is set to 16.5 degrees.  This has been the best fairway wood I’ve ever had.

The 5 hybrid is paired with a Fujikura Fuel Hyb 85g Stiff shaft.  This hybrid has a bonded hosel, so I have just bought another one to receive the TPT Hybrid shaft that I get fit into in order to compare them.

I will be testing these golf shafts both on the course using Arccos to track statistics and on the range using a Rapsodo MLM launch monitor to gather data.

Also getting back to Swing Speed Training with the Stack System right now and will be trying to incorporate some of Martin Borgmeier’s protocols into my training.  Martin is currently using the TPT golf shafts to compete in World Long Drive events.

The Fitting with Jon Sinclair is another exciting component of this shaft test.  These shafts are premium products and a comparable premium fitting just makes sense to get the most out of them.

The shafts I’m currently playing are among the best quality available using traditional shaft manufacturing technology and processes.  I’ve been fit for them and they’ve been tweaked after the fitting through trial and error.

It will be very interesting to see how the new TPT shafts compare!
