Popular Post Indy_Oz
Solid 9 holes this morning. 1-over, 37. This muni is a lower difficulty course with plenty of bail out areas- and no bunkers - so I expect to shoot under 40 most of the time. But it’s very close to home and cheap, so makes a good practice course for minimal family time impact. Perfect weather. 70f and sunny at 0900 tee time. Just nudged 80f as we finished. Felt like I was swinging nicely and the wedge ladder cheat sheet was very useful (cheat sheet pic in this post). I hit some really nice chips and pitches with good distance control. Accuracy could have been better, but I left at least 2-3 birdies on the course due to narrowly missing putts (2 lip outs) after hitting decent approach shots. The two par 5s, I was on in regulation (second one I was on the green fringe after 2 shots) and really should have birdied. Then hole 5 I had a nasty lip out birdie putt. Driver was a bit hit and miss, but good distance. 3W (knocked down to 12.25*) was solid. 7W and 3H both straight as an arrow. Arccos stats for the round were solid. Strokes Gained are compared to a 5HCP, which is my target for this year. We've had a fair bit of rain lately and the greens were mostly very slow and frustrating. The combination of the milled face putter and Callaway Chrome Tour feels really good and I've been rolling it well, with good distance control. Close second is the TP5X. Chrome Tour X, TP5, Maxfli Tour and Bridgestone Tour BX just haven't clicked with the putter in recent rounds. I've really liked the Tour BX and MaxFli Tour off the tee and with approach shots. Close in chips/ pitches, the Chrome Tour and TP5X just feel better for me. After not playing a Chrome Tour for a while (long since sacrificed all my white box test balls to the Golf Gods), it was reassuring that today and Thursday confirmed my view from testing that it's a 'play it' ball. Lastly, this is from the 9th hole after my tee shot. "I see a gap"...lol Charity scramble coming up on Tuesday on what is meant to be a nice and challenging course. Looking forward to that! Then league restarts Thursday after the 4th July break. Hit well everyone! Edited July 7 by Indy_Oz IndyBonzo, cksurfdude, TJ Hall and 10 others 8 5 Quote 2024 WITB: Driver: Ai Smoke MAX 9* w. Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
Well, I beat the heat but not the humidity this morning. Dam 75 % humidity was pretty brutal. Took the 3 wood out of the bag this morning and added a second driver. I put the Aerojet back in after my adjustments to compete with the TSI 1. Once again TSi 1 has claimed the home spot in the bag (again). With hitting two off the tee for several holes I played both balls trying to work on changing trajectories into the green. I found that I really need to take more of a divot on approaches. A sweeper had a lower ball flight and ran more on the greens. When I tried to really hit down on the ball to make my flight was much better. Higher, more in line with my target, and landed softer. This gave me more birdie looks. After the front 9 the Aerojet was taken out of play, and I could focus on score. It didn't get me in trouble, but it wasn't in the middle of the fairway and wasn't much longer. I did manage 1 eagle, 1 birdie, and 2 bogies and 1 completely soaked set of clothes. Good times. Popular Post SDGolf619
Shot a 79 yesterday with three birdies and a quad on my nemesis hole. I was playing with my younger brother from the white tess. He has been golfing longer than I have but he's a fisherman, so his time to play and practice has been cut back. He ended up with an 85 but I know he's going to be gunning for me. Perfect weather, light breeze and not a cloud in the sky. We came home, grilled and watched the Padres afterwards. Perfect summer day! Again, loving the Odyessy #10. My confidence is going up and my yips are going down. Rolled in a 30 footer for bird and a few other mid-range par savers. The one tough part of the mallet is the 3-4 foot breakers where you just need to breathe on it and it's hard to control the touch. Had a few really nice up and downs for par from the rough. Ball above my feet and another was a downhill lie. Put em both to a couple of feet and got up and down for par. I went back to a little drill with my driver where I swing around the outside of ball a few times. It easily promotes the inside to out swing path and it's really helped straighten things out. It also helped with my hybrids and long irons and I drove a par 5 in two which is rare for me. Missed the eagle putt by a few inches outside but got it to the hole. Yesterday's round got me down to a 9.1 handicap too which is nice. Popular Post Shrek74
Played a pretty good round today. 46/43/89, on a course where my handicap is +19, I shot 2 better at +17. Second time this season I've broken 90, which is great. That's one of my goals is to do that more often than not, so improvement is being made. I did 2 things I've never done in all my decades of playing golf. 1. I didn't have a lost ball penalty. 2. I played the same ball all round long. My Maxfli Tour made it all 18 rounds and 89 strokes, and is in great shape still. Nothing other than some grass stains from the last hole, and my green Spartan helmet is almost gone. Never washed it either, which is crazy since that green marker helmet is pretty much gone. That little white pebble is going on the shelf here in my office!! No trips, but a few doubles I need to eliminate. First 7 had a penalty stroke. Second 7 was a 3-putt. First hole was just a second shot that flew the green and then a blind chip coming back that almost went into the pond. Just some stuff that happens. My overall numbers were really good for the round compared to a 20 handicap, and compared to my season averages. Chipping is still a work in progress, but I'm getting far more comfortable with my new wedges and how I'm using them. That number will get better, I have no doubt. I tweaked the Callaway Ti 340 to drop a degree of loft and I put the heavy weight in the front. I found a nice groove on the back nine only missing 1 fairway. Longest at 239. Overall a great day with dad, who birdied #2 and shot a 46/45/91 (at age 83). taylorjonasher, Rob Person, sirchunksalot and 11 others 10 4 Quote Driver: STMax 230 10.5*, Stiff HZRDUS Smoke Blue RDX, 60g Fairways: 949x 3w / 5w, 15* / 18*, Stiff HZRDUS Smoke Red RDX, 70g Hybrids: 939x 4h, 21*, Stiff HZRDUS Smoke Red RDX, 80g Hybrid Irons: JPX923 Hot Metal Pro, 5-GW, UST Mamiya Recoil 95 F4 Wedges: S23, 54* & 60*, UST Mamiya Recoil 95 F4 Putter: Moment X Tour @ 35" & 71*, Super Stroke Pistol GT 2.0, White/Red Ball: Tour CG Technology: Anarch Rangefinder, V5 w/ Tags Shot Tracking. https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/65161-vortex-optics-rangefinders-2024-member-test/?do=findComment&comment=1089247 https://forum.mygolfspy.com/classifieds/ - DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE CLASSIFIEDS!!!! taylorjonasher
Played 7 at Gardner Golf course in Marion today with my 12 years old daughter and 7 year old son. I played the forward tees with them and shot even par, using only the 2i off the tee. My kids hit the ball well, each having a few great drives and iron shots in the fairway. However, we only played 7 due to the extreme slow play of the group in front of us, who blamed a nonexistent foursome in front of them for the pace. I also watched one of them pick up my ball from a blind shot over a hill that went into their group (it was a beautiful 250 yard 3W to the fringe) that they denied. I’ve never had anyone pick up my ball before and then act like it never happened- just flat out said they never saw it and drove off. Now I’m grilling up some brats and decompressing with a couple of beers. cksurfdude
Played 9 in oh yeah pretty hot and very humid conditions .. ahhh Summer! Classic golf round today = long game better than usual / short game worse than usual... Driver* was working; second shots were occasionally chunked but at least went in the right direction vs wedges and putting were sheesh omg wtf (lol ). A few good highlights, though - made my first par on a longish for me Par 4 (lucky bounce and roll on the second got the ball onto the green), followed that with another par on the next Par 3 (solid 7i to the middle of the green and a really close first putt). The real highlight of the day was my honey - while she kept putting her ball into almost every greenside bunker .. she kept hitting it out like no kidding freaking stoopit close to the flag almost every time!! (..yessirreee I was/am jealous!!!) So while my score was still a big number I came away feeling like I made a bit of progress today. ... * Driver - readers of CHA may know I also sent some old gathering dust unwanted clubs to Callaway during their 2X trade-in for the AI Smoke family and got a new driver (for just the tax). Took it to the range the other day and tinkered with the settings, with the weights, swapped in different shafts and... .. for me at least (and everyone is different YMMV etc etc) but for me this year's tech beats out last year's!! Maybe it was just today (heck maybe it was the heat and the sweat) but the ball was launching high and .. mostly .. straight. Seems to be way more forgiving and pretty sure I'm getting more distance out of it (just subjectively eyeballing the shots). Popular Post berkeleybob
The Fantasy I’m on summer holiday chillin’ in a rented summerhouse, got my clubs—I’m playin’ some golf! The Reality Almost all of the Danish golf courses fall under a single governing body, and since I’m not a member of a golf club, I can’t get on an 18-hole course. To quote a 1970s sci-fi series character, “Oh, the pain! The pain!” So I’m relegated to playing a simple 12-hole course not far from the summer homes and nearby resort. It’s billed as “a place for the whole family” and “players at all levels are welcome.” It screams to me that it’s not much more than a glorified mini-golf course. But beggars can’t be choosers. The Gem in Woods I grabbed my gear and headed out early in the morning. Driving up to a narrow dirt road, I pulled up to this place. No one around, just a place to swipe your credit card and pick up a score card. It’s a mix of par 3s and 4s. And while the tee boxes are mats, they are pretty well maintained. The path between holes were trails in the woods … … and along some ponds. The golf course also offers a Putt & Take, which is Danish for a local stocked fishing hole. The sky opened up a bit, and the frogs and toads were singing in the rain. The fairways and greens were so well maintained. It was just a lovely surprise. My game? I blew up on the 8th hole and ended up 15 over par. But I can’t complain. My expectations were blown away. I’ll be back there this week, and I’ll give a better blow-by-blow. Popular Post DiscipleofPenick
Played yesterday morning with @MaxEntropy and other friends at Ironwood. I'm really starting to like the course and it's in decent shape, affordable, and a good layout. I shot 42/37, so I think I am figuring it out. I had a birdie on 18 and no doubles, penalties, or 3-putts. cnosil, berkeleybob, sirchunksalot and 8 others 11 Quote Take Dead Aim Driver: PXG 0211 10.5* Fairway: Titleist 917 F3 15* Hybrid: Adams Idea Pro Boxer Gold 18* Irons: MacGregor MT-86 Pro Wedges: Vokey 50/54/58 Putter: SeeMore X2 Costa del Mar Ball: Srixon Z-Star
Popular Post MaxEntropy
I got out Friday and yesterday, neither of which were particularly great. Friday was at Legends of Massillon. I had never been there. The course was in pretty good shape, but I don't think I'm a huge fan of the layout as there are too many holes that take driver out of your hands (sort of necessary given the length, I guess). There was also a really hokey par 3 that was playing 180-ish that required something close to a stinger unless you hit the ball dead straight as trees created a very narrow alley. Impossible if you have any shot shape other than the gentlest of fade or draw. I did pretty much nothing well and shot an 89. Sunday was an early tee time with @DiscipleofPenick. I started well with birdies on 1 and 7 and ended up with a 41 on the front. The back has a bit less margin for error and it bit me. I shot a 46 on the back. The worst thing was the way I chipped on the back - I skulled/shanked a couple, hit a couple very fat. I honestly accept and don't mind a bad round, but for some reason I really don't like it when I start decent and finish poorly. Tom and I were playing match play again and at one point I was 3 up but ended up losing 4 and 2 . Of course, it didn't help that I fell apart and he shot a 37 on the back. Popular Post Rob Person
Yesterday was a record day for me on # of holes played. 54!!! We started out at my home course for 18. 0710 tee time. (See pic above) solid round for me, but knowing the course well really helped alot. Shot 42/43. Several bad birdie misses, and 4 - 3 putts after great drives and fairway play. Best shot was on hole 12, 235 yard drive up the middle. 4hy rolled 177 up to the fringe . Chipped in for eagle from 15 yards. We were paired with a young husband wife team, newer golfers, but very respectful of rules and pace. We played in 3h 45m. Buddy shot his pb there with a solid 45/45. we chilled in the ac for 20 minutes and hydrated before we headed to the course where I first started playing golf. It was about 30 minutes away and it was already 100⁰ + out with sweltering humidity. Headland CC is a 9 hole, split tee box public course with membership options, built many years ago from reformed farmland and inbetween peanut fields. It's amazing how well they've updated and maintained the greens and tee boxes since my last visit. The fairways are all former peanut fields, so while there is alot if haygrass, there is also firm planting dirt underneath the blades. The greens are very firm, and fast! Getting a ball to check and stop is very difficult. This is a links style course with no true barriers between fairways other than the very thick and tall uncut fescue (aka haygrass) We were only going to play 9 holes due to the heat, but after shooting a terrible 49 after 9, I talked him into calling it a warmup round and heading out for another 18. I shot much better after familiarizing myself with the course and played out a decent 44/42. He shot a 46/45. I had a number of missed opportunities on the greens. All the greens roll from the center downward for 360⁰ of the green. Very few uphill putt chances. Shot of the day was hole 7, 273 yard par 4. I cranked the driver 240 with rollout to 260 yards! Even my buddy was left mouth agape. I barely chipped over the bunker and it rolled out to 8" from the pin for a birdie putt. There were a number of times I used a 6i from the tee box too due to the layout. Sunburnt, exhausted, and very pleased with how the day went. The regular semi-private courses will have pay-and-play courses—which are usually par 3 9-holes or par 3/4 9-holes. Doing the math, I figured that becoming a member is pretty cost effective if I play three/four times a month or so. My particular issue is that the club down the road I want to join has bit of a waiting list (thanks, Covid), and the next closest course is a twenty-minute drive. So I’m just in golf limbo/hell right now. Popular Post Green4Spinach
Finally. I did it. I submitted some scorecards so that I can get a handicap. I know this may seem strange to some of you, but I don't have a handicap. I can already hear the comment: Who let this guy in? Having gone on a course for the first time in November 2023, I finally reached the point where I felt I would like to get a handicap. I use a Shot Scope X5 for shot tracking, and that estimates my score as being in the region of 28. With those expectations, I was not surprised to register 103 on my first handicap scorecard. A few weeks later I registered 97 on my card. And now I have gone around for a score of 94. Although this was my best ever round, I felt somewhat deflated that my round had been sabotaged (by me, of course) by 6 penalty points for having lost three balls. Twice I lost my ball on the same hole. Plus, I three putted more times than I could count. So the raw material is there for a decent round but it has not happened to me yet. The question that is obscured by my mistakes is this: how did I lower my score by 9 strokes in five weeks? Could it be my swing is just getting better? I'd like to think so. Is my driving more consistent? If gaining distance on my Shot Scope P-Average metric is anything to go by, then I moved from 216 yards to 233 yards over the last few weeks. My irons have improved. My dismal putting has got slightly less dismal. Only my short game has not seen quite the boost that must have happened to the rest of the game, as evidenced by my overall Strokes Gained metric improving by 5.3 strokes over a 25 handicapper. So how did this happen? One possible explanation is that I moved to a new ball, a distance ball. For the last few weeks, I have been a tester of the Vice Drive ball, a budget 2 piece ionomer ball. Thus, it was cost effective for me to join a private club. I wasn't sure about doing so, never have been before, and it is expensive. But, the cost of public rounds has gone up enough that a few rounds a month, much less a week, begins to rival the cost of the private fees. Plus, you add in the fact that most public courses around here have memberships available, but you have to join their ranges for a separate fee, the private club becomes even more cost effective. Plus, it is nice to have the pros, cart guys, range guys, and the maintenance people being helpful and knowing you.
