I learned our next door neighbor's oldest son is now cancer free! He had to take a semester off of his junior year of college to fight it, and fight it he did with some treatments up in Boston. He's headed back to college and I couldn't be happier for him and his family.

    Whats your best joke?

"Sixty is the worst age to be," said the 60-year-old. "You always feel like you have to pee. And most of the time, you stand at the toilet and nothing comes out!" "Ah, that's nothin'," said the 70-year-old. "When you're seventy, you can't even crap anymore. You take laxatives, then you sit on the toilet all day and nothin' comes out!" "Actually," said the 80-year-old, "80 is the worst age of all!" "Do you have trouble peeing too?" asked the 60-year-old. "No, not really. I pee every morning at 6:00. I pee like a racehorse on a flat rock; no problem at all." "Do you have trouble crapping?" asked the 70-year-old. "No, I crap every morning at 6:30." With great exasperation, the 60-year-old said, "Let me get this straight. You pee every morning at 6:00 and crap every morning at 6:30. So what's so tough about being 80?" "I don't wake up until 7:00!"

  4. Hello Everyone! Just wanted to touch base with MGS & SuperSpeed to tell you how sorry I am for my lack of participation with this review. After I was chosen, I was very excited about the process. But unfortunately the pain in my hip has become unbearable and I have decided to go ahead with the surgery sooner rather than later. I didn't think this was going to come about so soon or during the review process of the SpeedSwing but it did. And I am one of those guys that will go in 100% or not at all with my review. I take it very seriously and won't "pencil whip" the review process in any way, if you get my meaning. I could have gone along with it & said to MGS & everyone else what they wanted to hear but I just don't do that. Again I am very sorry to MGS & to SuperSpeed for what has transpired these past few months. I look to get back into the swing of things (pun intended) in about 4 months. My surgery is next week & I won't be swinging anything until then. Incidentally, I have sent back the SpeedSwing to Chicago as requested. Good luck to everyone & I will be following along with the process. I hope to see a lot of gains from everyone.

    How'd you play?

I agree about the advice! I wasn't so lucky today. My regular group today was short a person because one guy didn't want to play in the cold and wind. The pro shop put a single with us. I'm guessing he was a 20-something handicap by the way he played. No offense to 20-something handicappers; I have enjoyed playing with many over the years. I hit a bad tee shot on #2, so he starts to tell me what I did wrong, how to play my next shot, then again on the #3 tee box he proceeds too tell me how to play the hole. I play that hole an average of 4 times a week for the past 3 years; I know how to play it. I played only 9 holes, and I was mostly trying to play anywhere on the hole where he wasn't.

  6. Update on the game yesterday. I hooked it all day, then on the 17th tee box I asked my group what the hell am I doing. Two of the guys play fades all day every day, they were no help. The other guy plays a draw, he said “For me, when I start hooking I’m finishing flat, try to finish higher.” The next two drives where without a doubt the best drives of the day by far. When we finished I asked why he didn’t give me the advise earlier, he said “You didn’t ask, so I assumed you didn’t want any.” Point is it’s fixed the hooks, for now. And that’s why I like playing with those guys, they don’t offer unsolicited advise!! Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

I am pretty positive I will be asked to leave MGS headquarters tomorrow. It will be my first day of Most Wanted Testing for 2019 and I have a feeling I will be testing out a lot more than I am scheduled to test. Drivers are scheduled, but hoping some of the new putters will be there as well. Don't know why but I am really excited about testing this year; maybe because I am in the market for a new putter

Have a lot going on and some good and fun news to share. With work still bring busy but more with larger trips away and when I'm home less time working I went to try and look for some enjoyable part time work to keep me busy and help pay the this golfing obsession. Ended up working out that the local golf shop was looking for someone at the same time and I start when I get back from NZ in a few weeks! Can't wait to get started and learn more about the equipment side of the industry as well as fittings and everything else. It's a great shop locally owned and operated for a number of years now and is still very successful despite having golf town and sport check stores offering golf products. They have incredible customer service and the only draw back I can see is wanting to buy absolutely everything there all the time! Haha

  9. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on a Shotscope (hopefully some new deals pop up this spring). I've been weighing the pros and cons of this versus Arccos for a couple months and the "no subscription" aspect of the Shotscope factored quite a bit - I'm not a fan of subscription-based software, even more than having a dinner platter on my wrist. I've been wearing my Fitbit while doing the Orange Whip routine to get used to having something on my wrist. Is there something else I'm not considering?

  10. Limped home to an 88 on Sunday and my handicap keeps trending higher as I kick out good scores from summer. I am finally trying to address my flipping & leaning back tendency on my downswing that leads to epic, hole-killing hooks, and the results just haven't been there yet. Early in the round my newer swing thoughts are working, but my setup/positioning is bad, for example I pured my 7 iron approach on the first hole but instead of my normal pronounced draw, this one started right of the target and just eased back a bit. A great ball flight that I would be ecstatic to use consistently, but missed the green because I aimed there, not trusting the new swing yet (and didn't get up & down). Then as the round goes on old tendencies come up and I start missing left again. #dreadedtwowaymiss GHIN has moved up from 5.7 this summer to trending 8.6. I need to fix this issue in 2019 because once I have kids the number of rounds I play will be dropping substantially and I'll have no hope, but man is it frustrating in the meantime...

  11. I came to the same conclusion as Kenny early on in my training. Here is a snipped of the owners manual: "8. The display will flash if a duplicate of the previous speed is measured. It returns to stationary if a third identical speed is measured, etc."

  12. Fun Facts. It seems the bottom end speed for my unit is somewhere in the 40's. It will pick up the start of my backswing during the Step Change I have also found out that if you get the same speed as the previous swing, the display blinks; but if you get the same speed for the 3rd time in a row, the display doesn't blink. For some reason on my kneeling swings, I usually have faster swings with my non-dominant hand.

  14. Did some followup research in Game Golf. Over the last 15 rounds: From 50-75: 88% within 15 yards. From 75-100: 57% From 100-125: 66% From 125-150: 48% So it does look like there is on-course data that supports what the SkyTrak saw. The opportunity to bring on-course and practice stats together like this is so intriguing to me.

  16. The sun was out and forecast called for a high of 48...Bag it! Grabbed my gear and headed out right around noon. No warm-up, just straight out on the course. I suffered an 8 on #1 but settled in after some holes and kind of played my new usual mix of brilliance mixed in with WTF was I doing!!?? Back 9 had 2 lovely pars and a real good chance at a birdie on 17 that I wound up 3-putting..! Driver was not on my side most of the day, so I hit lots of 3w & 5w off the tee. Both iron & wedge play were a mix of 50/50. 48/43-91 which I am not unhappy about at all considering I haven't made any swings at all since very early in November.

    How'd you play?

Got the first 9-hole round of 2019 in yesterday; wife and I were down in Florida for a long weekend (attended a 2-day clinic given by Teresa and Sue of Nancy Lopez Golf Adventures; off-topic but VERY HIGHLY recommended - especially for couples, eg. guys who want to get their wives some non-competitive/non-threatening yet super-high quality instruction). I'm feeling like this season is going to be a year of really good golfing progress! So even playing with basic rental clubs (Strata) I was hitting fairways and hitting most of my second and approach shots decently. Not awesome but all playable. Very few wasted shots. One fairway missed was a 6i into a dogleg right that I didn't hit "fully" and it faded a bit and brushed the tree on the inside of the dogleg and fell under it. Only other missed fairway was with driver - into the morning sun and all carry across water on a dogleg left- and I just i-dunno-what with the first shot and pulled it low-left right into the drink.... Re-tee'ed shot was not spot-on but pretty darn good into the fairway across the water. Had a few other solid driver tee shots so feeling good about playing that club this season. The two Par 3s I hit straight online but short both times. Chipping around the greens was ok; the rental set had a 56 vs the 54 or 58 I carry. Putting was decent but distance control on the first putts was not great. Can't really blame that one on the rental clubs, though! Overall looking forward to happy - and successful - golfing this year!

  20. The putters were rusty, dinged and dented and in overall awful shape to begin with and basically had no facemilling remaining. I just do this as a hobby I don't have the ability to remill faces. The owners of the putters understood that I'd need to at least lightly sand the face to prep it for the finish and were OK with the shallow lack of milling or requested complete removal of the milling marks. These putters were all requested to be glossy and probably look overglossy because they are oiled.

  21. Diamond-Like Carbon Coating (DLC) is the ultimate performance coating, offering a wear-resistant chemical barrier for metal, ceramic, glass, and plastic, normally deposited at temperatures below 150°C. DLC is ultra resistant to abrasive and adhesive wear, rendering it suitable for use in both rolling and sliding applications that experience extreme contact pressure.

  22. er1.2 now firmly on my radar for this season, especially as I now play a Ping anser 2 which I like the sound and feel from it, but its a bit light and offcentre hits come up way short. This DLC black just sealed the deal. Just need to see how to get it done in the UK to that same standard. p.s what does DLC mean? (Thicko Mcthick here, sorry)

  26. Thanks Ricky Bobby and Steady golf What type of Mizuno iron do you game Steady? I’m on the mobile app and can’t see your signature. Fitting isn’t just having the irons “fit” it’s having the proper irons for your swing. I would expect accuracy to decrease a bit with a 10 yard distance gain. Beyond a doubt I think lessons and smart practice trump fitting - but really poorly fit clubs will cause swing flaws Sounds like RickyBobbys experience is similar to mine. 27. I certainly agree with the OP. Fitting and coaching/instructions will help you go lower, but you can still play good golf without them. I think the biggest difference between golfers who are improving and those who are stagnant at a mid-to-high handicap, is their own determination to get better. It's their mindset and what they're willing to do to get at least some practice in. Using myself as an example, I hovered at roughly around a 15 or 16 handicap in 2016 and 2017. That was an improvement from the 18 to 20 handicap I was probably at before. In 2018, I dropped to a 10.6 and I probably played less than I ever have in any of the previous seasons. In fact, I think I played more golf as an 18-20 handicap than I did as a 15-16. I've taken a couple lessons every year for about 4 or maybe even 5 years now. It wasn't until I started to change my mindset on the golf course and squeeze in practice whenever/wherever I could, that I started to really improve. Now when I go to the course, I play each hole backwards in my head to determine how I want to get to the hole. If I get out of position or into some trouble, I go for the smart play and don't get overly aggressive unless I'm really comfortable with the shot. I use slopes and different trajectories to get on the green and closer to the hole. If I'm having a rough day, I do my best to talk myself off the ledge and stick to my routine until things click (more often than not, I can still salvage a round that starts horribly by simply sticking to my routine). I still have yet to be properly fit for a set of clubs, but I did at least run through my bag with a fitter to make sure the clubs I have are optimized for me (I need to do this again SOON). My misses are better and I don't have hardly any gapping issues. I still firmly believe that a full bag fitting will give me the best chance to play my best golf.

  28. So, 10 yards longer carry vs 0811X Gen1. 400 revs less spin. 109 swing speed, 1.46-1.51 smash factor (a lil under the weather!) ~9 degree launch, 1900-2100 spin, longest carry was 265 with 15 yards rollout. Funnily enough with the TPT swing speed went down to 106 (tho they use the changable shaft adapters, and it put the SW to D7, then had to tinker with the head weight). And the ball speeds stayed the same. AND Its the same story with Gen1 vs Gen2 - the 109 swing is ~3/4mph slower than my Gen1 and i’ve not lost any ball speed.

  30. I really do like this topic, @revkev. As one who has had only a single lesson and has never had a fitting, I can't write about how lessons and fittings have dropped my scores. And I want to reiterate: I'm not against lessons and fittings. It's simply that in my circumstances, they haven't made themselves available to me in a way that works. So here's my followup to my earlier comment. One of the main reasons to go to a coach is that he actually has a clue what is wrong with your swing, and can get you on the road to fixing it much faster than you plugging in random swing tips from Golf Digest. I agree with this completely. If you don't have a coach, you have to have a way to get real feedback about what's happening with your ballflight, what in your swing is causing it, and how it might be fixed. For me, one path to get those answers is technology. I've written in another thread that I just had the privilege of buying a SkyTrak. The launch monitor data from the SkyTrak is quite well-regarded by those who have compared it with the $25,000 launch monitors. Suffice it to say that, if you know how to get the most out of it, you can get good data about what your shots are actually doing, even more than you can get on the range just watching them. I'm adding to that a camera that not only records video of my swing, but allows me to watch my swing as I'm swinging by feeding a live stream to my tablet. And then I plan to use the little Zepp swing monitor on my glove. With these pieces of tech, I think I will be well-equipped to know what my ball is doing and why, without it being a mere guess. With those facts, I ought to be in a good position to look for solutions to the problems that are present. This isn't a recommendation that anyone else do it this way. I enjoy golf, and I also really like gadgets. This is fun for me. But I'll say this: with this setup, if I'm unable to drop from a 15-handicap to a single-digit handicap this year, I'll definitely have to concede the argument that I need a coach.

They’re just making it interesting. I’m going to bed. But I expect it still to be in overtime when I wake up tomorrow. Score needs to be like 200-201. The most epic flash of a game with some speed foam, tungsten weight lifted, no forgiveness, no spin. That’s my attempt at hyping up this game. Did it work? I didn’t think so.

  37. To be clear I’m not pitting lessons against fitting. I’m asking how much better you’ve gotten through lessons and fitting over being self taught and playing off the rack equipment. It was worth about 6 strokes for me but that’s from a creaky 6 or 7 to a solid 1. It’s very hard to shave off strokes in that territory. Is there anyone else with an educated guess as to how much they improved through lessons or fittings or both? Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  38. So I'm on the train. I re-installed MyFitnessPal on my phone to track my eating habits, and also got the 7 Minute Workout app so I can get in some exercise in the morning. I'm also making a point to get to the gym at the Y at least 2x per week, usually when my son is at karate. I've got to run up and down a giant ramp pushing props in April in a situation where the kids are timed on and off the floor at WGI World Championships, and last year I was sucking wind the entire time. Gotta get in shape!

  40. Interesting topic, rev. Last weekend when I was at golf galaxy swinging the TS2, I had a good discussion about the topic with the guy that was helping me. His recommendation to me was lessons first to refine my swing and make it all more repeatable before focusing on what club might be best for me. The crazy thing about this game is I feel like I used to have a fairly sound swing (but didn't have time or money to work on it) until a couple years ago when back trouble started. I picked up a lot of bad habits to avoid pain. My back is quite a bit better now, but the flaws remain. I've had a couple lessons and have been working on the primary flaw. Depending on what happens this year, I may try Golftec or something that will totally break down my swing and see what happens.

  41. After placing my radar on the other kneeling mat I've had fewer missed shots. Before that I had days where speeds would register in the 50-60 mph range or the same speed would still be on the radar without the blinking to indicate that it registered the same speed. I'm figuring it has to do with a less than consistent swing plane and I was swinging above where the radar will pick it up. Hopefully a little more focus on consistency on my part will help. 42. is there a shotscope leaderboard that anyone has created yet for the forum members? Side note, the new firmware is going to resolve the counterbalanced putter issue with allowing you to manually tag your putts, that will solve that problem for me. 48. The Beta firmware so far is great, seems to pick up location faster and gives you a more "reassuring" screen as to what it's doing and that it hasn't just locked up and achieved nothing while it is looking for signal. Being able to play a back-9 on reciprocating or multiple-9s courses is great too. It seems to be better at picking up your putting location more quickly too, though that may just be my perception. That's been the one area I've had questions in the past, where I tend to be over my putt and take it fairly quickly and I've had to edit putt and flag locations more than any other thing previously, though I also think some of that is simply that the course I most commonly play needs re-mapping. The only other minor gripe I have is that the mobile app is slightly confusing around the turn of the year. I downloaded my first round of this year yesterday and immediately couldn't see it, it looked like it was just lost. I'd forgotten/hadn't realised that rounds are stored per-year and I was still looking at the 2018 page. Still, scoring is coming along well and I'm #1 in more than one category on the MGS leaderboards, so step your games up fellas (though you can expect my position on at least one of those to drop right off as soon as I play a slightly more difficult course...)

  49. I have never been fit for clubs ( I would like to do it), but I think lessons and practice would make the biggest difference. I have taken a few lessons over the years, and practiced what I learned. My game definitely improved. I'd like to think being fit would also improve my game, but I think the gains there would not be nearly as noticeable as lessons and practice. I also think that the more you just play the game, the better you will become just by virtue of developing a sense for what and how to do it..... your brain figures things out when something is done repetitively. Some people will never be "good" at golf, no matter how much they spend on fittings, lessons, playing or desire. Some people could be very "good" at golf, but they would just rather play the game and enjoy the social aspect of it, rather than devote a lot of time and money to it. I think I could be a "good" player. I just don't have the time or disposable revenue for fitting, lessons and practice at this time. I'm guessing I'm surely not alone there.
