    Happy thread

Got some great news at work last week I meant to share. Lick enough to be getting a nice 7% raise on top of our schedules raises this fall for a total raise of 11%. I would love to say more money for clubs, but 3 kids in daycare next year will delay that a bit. I know many places are struggling so feeling very fortunate.

  3. You guys are funny. Arccos just SCREAMS at me - QUIT GETTING PENALTIES OFF THE TEE!!! Me - hold my beer. Hits it in the woods, losing a ball. DOH! But seriously, my 63* wedge hits the most GIR and is the 3rd most hit club in the bag. So that's important info. Also, off the tee I lose the most shots. I just bought a MGS favorite - the G410LST to try out. Can't wait until it arrives. I've never really got along with the M4 driver.

    How'd you play?

After 5 days playing with @fixyurdivot and @Thin2win in Spokane, my wife and I came home on Sunday and played 18 holes at our muni just to get reacquainted with the type of grass. We were paired with another couple that my wife plays this week in her ladies league match play. Can't lie... she was pretty good. Getting to the green, I would say they are about even but that lady is a longer hitter. However, on the green she is a better, more consistent putter. Could be close if my wife putts a little better. I drove the ball OK, but my woes continue off the fairway. Missed a lot of greens, but made up for it with 26 putts... yes... 26!! It was good to be home on familiar greens. Shot 82.

    How'd you play?

Had the day off and was able to get 36 holes in over three different courses, playing nine and 18 in the morning and then another nine after lunch. Lost a ton of strokes off the tee today (12 total) and was miserable inside of 100 yards. Hit the ball pretty well and had some great drives mixed in there, but losing 12 strokes due to penalties is just killer! Was a beautiful, beautiful day for golf and got to spend most of the holes with my brother-in-law and in-laws. Morning 9 - 42 / 40 ESC (+6) - 3/8 FIR - 5/9 GIR (1 birdie) - 16 Putts (7 2-putts, 2 1-putts) Had a nice birdie on No. 13, but snap hooked my drive out of bounds on No. 16 leading to a quadruple bogey. Morning 18 - 46 / 46 = 92 / 91 ESC (+20) - 10/16 FIR - 6/18 GIR - 30 Putts (1 3-putt, 11 2-putts, 5 1-putts, 1 par chip-in save) I lost four balls off the tee, two snap hooks lost in the trees and tall grass and two balls to the water. We played The Falls at Barber Creek in Kent City, Michigan. Quite a trek for us, but the course is great. Greens were lightning fast. Proud of my putting as a result. Afternoon 9 - 46 / 44 ESC (+10) - 2/7 FIR - 3/9 GIR (1 birdie) - 19 Putts (2 3-putts, 6 2-putts, 1 1-putt) Won't lie - was starting to get pretty tired after lunch. Two doubles and a quad hurt. Otherwise played five pretty good holes for par. Not my best day playing golf by any stretch, but it was a lot of fun and very enjoyable.

Super tired today, but I managed to save a 81 after a display of terrible tee game today. 1 bird, this was the hole of the day though. Even with the chunked 9 iron I made par. I tried a different approach on 2 holes, cost me 2 strokes above normal. Going back to bomb and gouge.

    How'd you play?

Continued my run of Up & Down rounds .. ie. either good, or not, golf with only a little in-between... Started off ok-ish with an ugly but in the fairway tee shot, pushed the second shot right and into trouble .. took a drop .. chip on, two putt .. double. Next tee shot faded right but playable from the rough, good second to a good position (Par 5), chunked the next and duffed the one after that .. chip on, two putt .. double. Next short Par 3 hit the green but ball bounced and rolled off the back into deep rough .. pitched it out ok but a little too far and ball ran off the edge on the far side .. chip on, got it close, one putt bogey. Next hole dogleg left with trees lining the inside .. actually hit a GREAT tee shot (..very literally surprised myself!!) .. that I pulled a little left of my line but it carried all the trees and I must've gotten a very lucky bounce as the ball was sitting in the middle of the fairway 100yds out! Hit the second a little thin but it rolled out to a decent position to putt from .. "easy" two putt PAR! Next hole is the longer Par 3 was playing about 150 .. was aiming a little right of the flag but tee shot went a bit left - straight at the flag - didn't leave it and ended up about 12 ft short of it! Missed the first putt on the high side but another "easy" two putt PAR!! Next long Par 5 I started to compound mistakes, and the short Par 4 after that I totally made a mess of .. and stopped counting..... So, thru the first 5 holes (of 9) at least, I was averaging Bogey Golf which is where I've been working to get to. WORK IN PROGRESS!

Got home about an hour ago after playing at Windmill. Shot an 86 today, so I'm going in the right direction! Only one really bad drive on #10 into the trees...waiting 10 minutes to tee off again. I hit some GREAT shots and some ordinary ones, but I was pretty happy.

  16. ... I would add a tee shot that just puts you in play is usually plenty. I was playing my best friend in Asheville NC quite a few years ago and he really struggled on the front 9 and had lost interest by the start of the back. I told him I would give him a stroke a hole and only use my 5 iron for every shot, including putting. After having little focus on the front shooting 3 over as I paid more attention to his game than mine, I shot 2 over on the back only using a 5 iron. ... For me, it was a very instructive round on many levels. After hitting 2 tee shots into the woods on the front I hit every fairway on the back with my 5 iron. I thought my way around the course more than I did on the front just hitting driver then figuring out what to do from there. I will admit I had several things in my favor, especially the yardage on this particular course setting up well for my 5 iron. The two par 5's set up nicely for three solid 5 irons and a few of the par 4's only needed a little less distance off the tee I accomplished by choking up, leaving me full 5 irons into greens. The two par 3's were a natural 5 iron on one hole and the shorter hole allowed me to run the ball on to the green after landing short with a knockdown shot. There was also some luck involved. ... But the biggest lesson I took form that round was how irrelevant the tee shot is as long as you are in play and have a shot at the green. I have no hesitation hitting my 4 iron off the tee. 175 from the fairway is better than 130 and a punch out from behind a tree every time. True, to play at the highest level you need all elements of the game to be at their best and that includes driving it far and straight so it is certainly something to strive for. But I firmly believe hitting your irons well should be the goal with most of your practice.

My 7-year old son's travel baseball season ended last week, so of course tryouts for next season were last night. We're trying out with a few different programs so we can be more selective for this coming season. Anyway, this particular program last night gave the kids three throws and radar gunned them. My son was thrilled that he threw the ball 327 mph. I felt bad telling him there was a decimal point in front of the 7. And yes, my son not noticing the decimal point might not be the punch line. That some of these youth select baseball programs think radar gunning kids is necessary or actually worth anything probably is.

Paul’s pet peeve: lost balls for amateurs Scenario… We play public courses with high rough. We tee off and see our ball is going offline, so we watch intently and try to “mark” it so we can find it. We get to where we thought our ball landed, look for three minutes, can’t find it, then head back to re-tee. Scenario 2.. We’re on Tour. We hit a drive and it looks like it’s going offline. We watch intently and try to “mark” it so we can find it. We get to where we thought our ball landed and a volunteer/fan/someone points right to it. We identify it and play on. I don’t want to see posts/tweets from a Pro about how long the rough is and how hard it will be to find a ball this week during the US Open…. There are volunteers and fans along every fairway helping show a player where there ball is, so don’t whine to me. We amateurs don’t have that luxury. We lose a stroke, they don’t. This is what drives me nuts when I play and hit one offline. I get a penalty when a Pro wouldn’t. Ugh. Drives me nuts. Wahhh, Ian Poulter, cry me a river. I answered him with “Zero. Fans and workers would show me where it is just like they will for you.” Rant done……. I think.

The trade in. Market is insane. I have an offer on the table for substantially over what I paid for it 1 1/2 years ago. I’m ok with driving A to B right now if it means large profit and I can use that to upgrade when the chip debacle settles down.

  24. The short answer is spin axis/direction. It makes it possible for me to hit balls indoors during the winter and know roughly where they ended up, both in distance and direction. The regular Mevo is great for measuring swing speeds, ball speeds and distance. But it doesn't show anything in terms of horizontal movement. So I could pound balls for hours hitting cuts or draws and never really know. In the past I drove an hour round trip once a week to use a heated range where I could see flight. But I'm not going to do that this upcoming winter.

Golfers have been known to look for excuses after hitting a bad shot and I once had a guy say he would never play with a Remote Cart again because it was so distracting when he was trying to hit his shot. Thankfully his playing companion knew him well and immediately jumped in and said while laughing "He never moved his cart when you addressed your shot. Not even for your practice swings. You just suck at golf" LOL.

  33. I haven’t read all of this thread, but if we had the data on strokes gained for golfers who do/do not use armlock, we could run some analyses and come to see if any statistically significant differences exist. Or take a golfer who was not using arm lock and then switched to it for a test to see if significant improvements occur. Seems like golfers are always searching, even at the tour-levels. Something might be gold for a month then fall off next month. I teach a grad class in sport ethics, so I get the arguments about “spirit of the rule” vs “the rule” itself. A golfer still has to read the speed and break properly and hope it doesn’t hit something that knocks it offline along the way. Lots of variables in golf.

  34. A month or so ago I was sitting on the back porch of the clubhouse with some members of the Men’s Group sharing a post round libation and solving the world’s problems when the conversation turned to finding the elusive perfect fairway wood. The conversation started with this question: Is there a more difficult club to find than a Fairway Wood that is accurate, long and straight off the tee and also easy to get in the air when hitting off of the deck? The conversation was heated at times. Opinions varied. Generally though the participants agreed that if you looked into most golfer’s bags that the oldest club in the bag would either be a fairway wood, a hybrid or a putter. Universally however there was a common refrain about “the one that got away.” As in, “I had this club once and I should never have gotten rid of it.” It seemed especially true of Fairway woods. The consensus among the group was that the 7 wood is the easiest of the fairway woods to hit off of the deck but it just isn’t quite long enough. The 4 & 5 wood had their fans and most people felt they were easier to hit off the tee and off the deck than a 3 wood and just as long in most cases, but still not as easy to hit off the fairway than the 7 wood. The 3 wood was almost universally scorned as hard to hit off of the deck. For a little while now I’ve been playing with a Tour Edge EX 10 16.5 degree 4 wood and a Tour Edge XCG7 21 degree 7 wood. Both have the Fujikura Fuel Red 60g stiff shaft in them. Over the last year I have gotten a little stronger and my swing speed has increased and the shaft in the 4 wood has started to feel a little soft and I’ve been fighting the hooks with it off the tee. The 7 wood being a little shorter seems stiffer and doesn’t hook. So once again I’ve embarked on the Fairway wood Unicorn hunt. As a result of an epic clean out the garage episode, I traded in a bunch of old clubs recently and through the combination of trade-in bonus offers and some of the clubs being still in demand I found myself with quite a bit of store credit to use to underwrite the hunt. First I got a great deal on a new old stock Tour Edge CBX 119 16.5 degree 4 wood with a Project X Evenflow Blue 65 g 5.5 shaft. Loved the way it looks, feels and sounds. Unfortunately high hooks again. Should have gotten a stiffer shaft. Not returnable. Damn! Then I took a risk and picked up a Mint condition demo club, also at a great deal, a Taylormade Sim Ti 19 degree 5 wood with the Diamana Limited 75 gram stiff shaft. Great early results, but not really a fan of the way it looks, feels and sounds. Launches low spin bombs off the tee and with the adjustable hosel allows lots of turn ability. It is in the bag at the moment. The next contender is a brand new Tour Edge EXS Pro 18 degree 5 wood with the Tensei Orange CK 75 gram Stiff shaft. It doesn’t seem to be as long off the tee as the Taylormade and feels heavier and harder to load the shaft. Just feels like more work to swing, but it doesn’t hook either. Will give it another chance and it comes with a 90 day playability guarantee. I picked up a Diamana Limited 75 gram stiff shaft off of Ebay for about $50, removed the Taylormade adapter, pulled the Fujikura Fuel Red shaft out of the EX 10 4 wood and created a golf club love child. Hard to part with this trusty 4 wood even if it is beat up a bit and trying to give it a new life. Testing has just begun. Lastly, a new Tour Edge EXS Ti 22 degree 4 utility iron has joined the party. Sporting a jaunty look and a super hot face, the ball jumps off of it and has already proven in a few short outings on the course to be a nifty rescue club. But it is not as long as my 7 wood and just a bit longer than my 5 hybrid. Going to keep it for windy days, dry and firm conditions and links style courses. It will become my official 15th club in the bag, pinch hitting as needed. The hunt has been joined! Stay tuned. What Unicorn club are you looking for?

Thankfully, only the first nine (at my home course) were walking. Falls at Barber Creek (the 18) is cart only, and we lucked out with no one in front of us and zipped around in 3:40 as a foursome. I don't get cheated on my vacation time . I'm very hit or miss! Usually as my tee game goes, my scores go, and then today my 50-100 yard short game just didn't help me out much at all. I'm starting to hit a ton of better shots these last few rounds, though, so another low round has to be around the corner!

  36. Okay, I have to admit to an addiction to golf equipment. Yes, that is correct. I think I have finally gone over the edge. yesterday a golf club sized package arrived at m6 house. It was from Patriot Golf. I ordered their Fathers Day package. A cap, a ball marker with hat clip, a sleeve of Cut Red balls and a #7 fairway wood. All of this for just $32 shipping. No extra fees or commitments. The cap is black(bad for summer) and does not fit well. The ball marker does not have enough strength to stay on the clip. The Fairway wood (#7) is the same style as the Taylormade Rocketballz 2 design. I know it’s old, but wanted to try it. I got to hit it today on the range(pre round) and was somewhat surprised at the performance. The launch was mid to high straight and dec3nt distance. Then, before I could try it on the course, we got dumped on from the sky on the 5th hole. We got soaked and quit. Anyway, I need to check into an anti-golf-equipment group for therapy.......anybody have suggestions?

I have steadily declined since April when I picked up a club for the first time in a long while and decided to get back in the game. I did break out the driver at the end of the session and piped 3 of my 5 swings long and straight allowing myself to leave on a positive note. Next lesson is at 3pm today. Hopefully we figure a few things out...

  46. MotoCaddy M7 Electric Cart Style What’s it look like (18 out of 20 points) The M7 looks like a Mercedes Benz truck with sleek lines and a nice tight booty er I mean body. It reminds me somewhat of my Bagboy Nitron push cart which is easy on the eyes too. While they are similar in style, the M7 looks like it’s on steroids with a muscular frame and heavier build. Yep it’s larger than your weekend push cart only because of the really solid frame and body. The good news is it folds as well if not better than some of the push/pull carts that have come down the pike. If you take the wheels off, it should definitely fit in the majority of vehicles. We also received a scorecard holder (I keep my score on my watch) and a device holder. I tried my phone in the device holder and it worked well however I was not willing to push the limits with my apple phone intact. The M7 might look like the Mercedes of electric carts however it’s tougher than a stud boar hawg fighting for the corn bin. It's a tough hombre because I took it through places only armoured personnel carriers and military grade humvees should travel. It bounced over rocks, roots, pine cones, mud, water, and thick wet morning rough with minimal problems. I will say when hitting pine cones and rocks, the two small wheels in front hopped around like Bubba Grimes waiting to pee during church service. I’d like to see how one large wheel would react on the M7….. With that said I’m totally sold on the frame lasting several years up to a decade and more. Easy Setup (18 out of 20 points) The M7 is practically fool proof to set up. It’s mostly assembled in the box you receive from the factory. Slide on the tires and pull them out until you hear a little click and you’re cooking with crisco. The user manual is exceptionally well written and guides you through each step with ease. No need to google instructions on the M7! On-Course (17 out of 20 points) Once you begin your first round with the M7 you are timid about where you send your cart to. It’s like jumping on your bike for the first time, you don’t want to run into old lady Gertrude’s rose bush or Uncle Felton’s fish pond. You develop skills as you continue your journey with the M7. Heck now I can cut donuts, pull wheelies, and race Bubba Jenkins and his golf cart like an old pro. Initially you have to hone your skills with the remote control however in no time at all it becomes easy peasy. I did take a spin around the yard chasing my three dogs to build my skills before I hit the course. On the course it’s a real benefit to my golf game. It frees up my mind as I’m walking towards my ball to get ready for the next shot. Not that I’m unsociable, however when you're in a golf cart with the likes of Homer Skillrider and he’s talking up a storm, you have little to no time to prepare your mind for golf stuff. I’m 70 years old and I generally walk three times per week which adds up to 7ish miles per round or 21+ miles. I LOVE the M7 because it saves my back from pushing uphill and through other rough terrain I sometimes encounter. Exercise is my friend and having a cart that allows me to walk with some speed is awesome for my cardiac and muscle tone in my legs. It’s good for you and keeps my body strong. If you don’t use it, you lose it. My push cart is a Bagboy Nitron which is an excellent non electric cart. With that said walking hands free is a totally different game which has actually elevated my golf game. I’m playing better golf now! Why? I suppose the ability to focus on golf instead of the hot chick Monroe slobbered on last night is a huge plus. M7 use of the remote (17 of 20 points) I would suggest caution when using in tight areas. When you first start your cart and you’re close behind, it will have a tendency to fishtail. Maybe it was my driving, however it will move to either side before you can right the ship. It’s like a bull with a hornet up it’s butt, don’t get in the way or you’ll be on the wrong side of a bad day. I was on a par three waiting on another fellow to hit. Well I was on the left side of my M7 and didn’t realize the wheels had been turned hard to the left. Once he hit I started moving and hit the forward button on the remote. Next thing I knew the cart was molesting me! It ran up my leg and was stomping my foot like an Italian in a grape tub. The old farts I was playing with were belly laughing with tears running down their cheeks. Yup be careful in tight areas. I would still opt for the remote system. It’s cool watching it running way ahead of you and folks in another fairway looking around scratching their heads. I love sending it to the next tee box ahead of me (pending no one is hitting). Hands free walking down the fairway is the bomb! Electric Cart Usefulness (17 out of 20 points) As I stated earlier in my review there is no doubt I have played better golf since using the M7 electric cart. It’s all about concentration for me. If I want to talk it up with a friend I will hop on their riding cart and chat all day. Catch up on the news both home and elsewhere. With that said I have seen obvious gains in consistent scoring since I began walking. I’m getting old. Hell I’m 70 now and in ten years I may slow down from walking or I may not. Even after three knee surgeries with two of them major and a broken right hip I’m a rejuvenated walker. Not pushing my cart is a huge advantage. Post round I can still be productive later in the day. Going to Little League ball games and other family events is no longer a dreaded thing. Give me an hour or two off my feet and I’m back at it. Play it or Trade it? (20 out of 20 points) Am I going back to pushing a cart or maybe selling or trading the M7? Nope ain’t gonna happen chief. It’s stuck with me for the next 10 years or so. I’m gonna ride this hoss for as long as my old arse, knees and feet can hang. The good, the bad, and the ugly: It’s good for your game to be able to concentrate while walking. It’s good for your health and keeps you young. It’s good because you don’t feel so burnt out after a round. You can get in your truck without tripping over your shoes from being dog tired. Since I started back walking two years ago, it’s good to see a few of my senior friends following suit. A couple of them are seriously contemplating an M7. One young man in his twenties is saving his money for one. Bad -- well I would say the small wheels in the front are a D- for me. They hop all over the place while you’re taking those shortcuts between tees. Pine cones, sticks and chipmunks - jk becoming stuck between the wheels causing skidding and bumping around like a dog with a porcupine stuck on his arse. I’d like to see one large wheel to keep objects from interrupting the roll. It’s a little heavy and while I understand it helps with the stability of the cart, most old folks ain’t as studly as I am. Even after taking the battery out, lifting it up in my truck is an eye opener. Most old coots, wimpy young bucks, and skinny gals will notice the weight. If the engineers could find a way to lighten it up a bit it may reach a wider audience. Fishtailing can be a problem. Small clicks for left and right turns are important however if you hang on a pine cone the small clicks don’t work as well. Hard press either way on the left/right buttons can cause sudden turns that could put you in a lake or off a bridge. Adding a large single wheel might help with the fishtailing. Ugly -- There’s nothing ugly about the M7. It’s an awesome looking cart and gathers looks all around the practice area. Total Points: 92 I would like to thank MotoCaddy and MyGolfSpy for this opportunity. Roger at MotoCaddy is a class guy who offered full assistance. It was a blast and an honor to review the MotoCaddy M7 electric cart!
