10 foot putt for birdie...... do YOU make it?

Now and then I will of course, but compared to the way the pros drill them, not at all.

 

I either over read, or under read, or leave it short, or hit it too hard. Or something!

 

Now from 4 feet in I'm pretty tight, and I lag well so I rarely 3 putt

(Except when putting for eagle from 18 feet- grrrr)

 

But 8-10 feet... don't bank on it

Nailed a 20-footer the other day, but of course that's an exception. 10' & into around 6' I also struggle more than I should. Just need more practice! But unlike the spirit of this thread, I rarely have anything inside of 20-30 for bird. My approach game needs work...

I would say normally I am in the miss way more than I make camp.  Although last weekend with my new Nike Method Mod 60 putter I did manage to drain 4 10-15 footers for par to save the round.  I am really hoping it isn't just a honeymoon period as the putter just feels right in my hands but I will probably come back down to earth this weekend.

Short answer, no.

 

I hit more greens than my handicap called for, so cross country putts were commonplace for me, never mind ten footers.. 

 

I used my ball mark tool as much as  better players than I, then humiliated myself with the flat stick.

 

I've had putts on links style double greens that seemed as long as some par 3 holes.  Never made a putt that had to be measured in yards except for one that I remember. The guy attending  the pin had time to walk far enough away with it that he literally didn't see the putt drop.

I make as many as I miss. My 8-10 foot average is around 50%, whether it be for eagle, birdie, par, triple, it is about 50% on all putts. I made 2 birdie putts from 15 feet and one from 40 feet today.

I miss too many putts from 5 feet and in, I am a good putter outside 5 feet.

Ha. I'll make it eventually. I'm at least 3% from 10 feet. So it is possible. Not likely though

According to ShotScope, I'm in the 50% range for 6-12 foot putts, although that's missed my last 5 rounds which have been some of the best putting rounds of my season. I keep forgetting the watch. Ha.

10 feet, i miss more than I make, and that's OK with me.  The standard for the strokes gained stat on tour is 50% from 8 feet, so from 10 feet the pros should expect to make maybe 40%.  I'm not far below that.

Definitely miss, but I would say that I don't miss by much. Some days they drop and some days they don't.

 

Have you tried getting Tiger Vision? You make everything with that.

I always go up To every putt with every intention of making it. Now I will say when it's super long I'm thinking 2 putt all day. But from 10ft I better be damn close

4 footer for birdie, nope. 35 footer for bogey or worse - 85-90% chance it goes right in the back of the cup.

I'm always close. It just seems I hardly make them.

 

What I'm getting at is how can they, the pros, read the greens so well?

I mean they see the nano bends. Quite often, I'll look and look, and then just give up and try straight, and then it'll just barely turn. But I just can't seem to see it...

Interesting, I know my make % is better going downhill. I always try to die in so I leave a ton of uphill putts just short but online. The downhill helps me get the ball to the hole.

Conversely though my 3 putt % is much worse with the first putt downhill because I can run I it by 5 feet easily.

Nope. I burn a lot of edges on my putts. Frustrating thing though...:when I have a 10 footer for double or triple they always seem to go in.

Reality is no but when I'm standing over it my thought process is yes. No negative thoughts over s shot is something I try to focus on. Mental journal of good shots with the club I'm holding or from the distance I'm at

You still have young nerves - give it a little time and you'll be like the rest of us. You'll get better at the 5 footers but scared of hitting the 10 footer 4 feet past.

 

I can help with the 5 footer. That's what you need to practice in 2 ways. Start with a straight in 3 footer and putt them until you make 10 in a row (every time you're on a practice green). Then take three balls get them around a cup with some break in a circle at 3 feet. Go through your routine on each and putt them until you make 10 in a row. Once it gets easy make it 4 feet, etc.

 

That's how I learned to finish holes - tons of hard work, lots of evenings in college where I missed Happy Hour at the Pub.

Interesting this comes up...

 

Played in league last night, and had 2 putts of no more than 10' and missed them both. Seems lately I have had a lot more birdie putts of 10' or less ( a good thing ! ) but i have missed just about all of them. Most of the time my line is good, but I leave them short. I know this year nearly all the courses I play have had slow to very slow greens, and that plays into this for sure.

This post shows how when your putting is on your scores will improve. I know for me if I make 50% of my 10' putts my round will be good. Do I make 50% of those all the time, not a chance. But when I do watch out. I would bet I am in the 30%-40% range at 10'.

It's crazy to see the scoring potential difference between getting your ball within 5ft of the pin vs. 8ft. according to the PGA stats. 36 inches can be the difference between a made or missed cut.

Now I understand why I don't putt particularly well.  I STILL don't miss many happy hours.  In fact, my normal Friday practice session is for maybe 40 minutes of full swing work, with a beer, followed by a couple more beers.
