Baton Rouge Country Club: oak intimidation!

It’s been 30+ years since I last played BRCC, and my memory is still full of images of tight, oak-lined fairways. Well, I was in BR today, so I drove-by, and went to take a peek to see if my memory has served me correctly.... Sure enough, it has!

I would say the majority of the courses I’ve played here in the State are very similarly set-up since the land is primarily “flat”, so the best defense are the huge oaks that populate our areas. Here are a couple of pics to show just how tight BRCC plays. The country club, and public course where I live are similarly set-up. It’s tough to pull driver with these views! Pic 1 is Hole 1, and the second is #9.IMG_0319.thumb.JPG.c6de23aa6427de374b07d89818eae3a7.JPGIMG_0320.thumb.JPG.9d921d2afe0c9879c0999d86669e72e1.JPG

Trees are a pretty good defense up here in Arkansas as well.  I dont have any good pictures on my phone at the moment, but tree lined fairways are the norm.  Tannenbaum GC left the biggest impression on me.  Even though the fairways are pretty wide at times, the rough is narrow and the tree are thick.

#9 looks very tight from that angle. I enjoy parkland style courses and prefer them over some other types. For me they seem to suit my eye and I drive the ball better. I suppose I just like a clearly defined setup is all. Like keeping it between the goal posts.

Sweet! Then you’re left getting over TWO sets of trees. Remember, those oaks aren’t short Texas trees...

Very tight. Notice the width of the fairway grass. Then look at how the tree limbs extend over that boundary... From this angle, I’m at the very far right of the green, from the approach. The pin is way to the left on the green, keeping the tree limbs into play all the way up to 100 yards. So intimidating from the tee box knowing you have to be right side of the fairway to have clearance from the trees for the approach, but can’t be too far right with the tree overhang. The whole course is this way.

I've played courses like the BRCC and even though I liked them - they probably needed some tree trimming and or removal in a few places.

Our course is pruning trees this week.  Unfortunately, the ones that I think need trimming weren't touched.  🙄

Just hit driver.  The pros do, and they seem to always get decent lies where the wedge it onto the green.

I’d LOVE if they played old courses like this! Narrow fairways, tree-lined, and penal! THIS is how to handle the “distance problem”.
