Popular Post Swood1994
Good morning folks, unfortunately I’ve been up since about 2am with our oldest and eventually lost that battle and mom had to save the day. She’s been doing good with all of the adjustments but I think it’s caught up. We are hoping it’s just a fluke but time will tell. @Cfhandyman happy birthday! @sirchunksalot Enjoy your round tomorrow, hit ‘em well. @Northern Monkey I’m sorry for your loss. Sorry I again missed the CC last night, Like I said something always comes up. Yesterday it was a friend and old school collector calling from Chicago. We go back a long way back to the Classics forum on WRX. We ended up on the phone for close to 2 hrs. We were catching up and he had just learned I was no longer on WRX. He said the Classics Forum had changed too. Some of the older guys had passed away or moved on like I did. I am trying to get him over here. I told him we did not really have a classics forum here but we could openly discuss things like classic stuff and no one gets bent out of shape. I told him also staff was open minded and perhaps if we get enough cross overs we maybe could get a Classics Section going. I told him @Hickory4ever was more active over here since I had came back I think adding a Classics section would be an easy thing to set up here on the Forum - will suggest reaching out to the Mods like Jamie to add it as a header in whatever part of the Members section would be best, possibly added to Golf Equipment or 19th Hole or even its own section if there is a wide array of things to talk about with classic clubs, as I am sure it might be as inexperienced as I am with the genre even though that's all I play that hasn't been tested for MGS of course 14 minutes ago, Hickory4ever said: @BIG STU and I share the view that many things modern in the golf world are rehashes of old concepts. I have always favoured a centre shafted putter and play one whether hickory, classic, or modern. I am a feel player, especially with putting and I like a traditional look. I still putt with a Bullseye for the most part, although my Otey Crisman mallet (hickory shafted) is just as effective. My hickory gamer is a 1904 Schenectady and is just as effective and has great feel. For as long as there have been golfers, new putters have been developed in search of greatness. I expect that will continue and predict that prices will continue to rise as the search for magic continues. I do enjoy the banter on the forum even though I am not a modern club ho any more. I like reading the posts you guys add as it brings life back to the older equipment that is so much of my golf experience and equipment, late to the game as I am in spite of a lifetime fascination with the sport. Popular Post Shrek74
Good morning, Spies!!! TGIFF!! Another beautiful morning, although the sun's still behind the trees thanks to the days getting shorter. Sunday looks to be good for our tee time at 10:30am. Today will be around 67* at 10:30 and sunny. I expect it'll be in the 50's for our tee time with a partly cloudy day. So the long sleeve UA cold gear base layer is getting another workout. But I'll take that as opposed to no golf at all. And we're still holding out hope that we can even get a round in that first weekend of November. I have a lesson tomorrow mid-morning, so we'll see where things are and get any recommendations for things to work on. I'll also be starting a TPI-based program in the next week or so to help work on my strength and flexibility. I'll pair that with some extra walking or extra weight training and an effort to better my nutrition. That's all part of my off-season goals so that next season will be the year I break 20 and stay under 20. Anyway, everyone have a super awesome day!! There are lots of ways to achieve putter action with shafts. Go back to the late 50s early 60s. John Reuter used a fluted shaft in the famous Bulls Eyes as did TP Mills. Actually, for me I love the old, fluted shafts so much I have one in my 1997 Scotty Santa Fe. Wilson back in the 60s had a specially designed putter shaft called the Speed Head with the green band in their 8802 and 8813 putters. A more modern trick showed to me by my friend who was a master builder and fitter is a Sensicore shaft on shaft into head putters like say a Ping Anser. This is exactly why I laugh when people say putter shafts don’t matter and the stroke is too small and slow to make a difference. Mills also created the pencil shaft and Cameron had the YSC shaft. Popular Post MattWillGolf
Good morning Spies, Uppa with a cuppa. Yesterday was most excellent. Golfed in the morning. During the round I experienced a first. Three holes in a row of par. This game is much easier when you find fairways and hit greens in regulation. . That stretch was surrounded by mediocrity. Fall is here in full force. Leaves ate several balls. This is the first hole. My second shot found the leaves on the left near the trap, never to be heard from again. The afternoon was taken up with car shopping. My wife has a 19 year-old Subaru Forester in need of a new catalytic converter. We hit the local Subaru dealer and she found a clean, well cared for 2017 Forester at a good price. My wife was sold. She hates cars with bells and whistles. This one is old enough to not have any. They are going to replace the brakes and do an oil change. We pick it up on Monday. It was the easiest car buying experience ever. So sorry @Northern Monkey about Minx. What is ironic I was just out in the shop finding another Hickory club I want to use tomorrow. I ran into a couple of Spalding Mills that had that shaft. I salvaged every single one I could find for a long time because they were sought after in the Mills Spalding collector world. Some may say wow that small of a shaft must be whippy. Nothing could be further from the truth. Those shafts had thick walls plus they were inserted in a 2-inch Hosle. Some I have salvaged in the past had a lot of lead down the shaft in that area. IDK I do not know if that was a Factory feature or custom feature. If one goes back even further some of the Calamity Jane Styles (real blade putters BTW) had long style Hosle with steel or hickory shafts. Common isometrics would say that is to make them stiffer with less deflection. Popular Post William P
Good Friday morning Spies! Enjoying the morning coffee and contemplating what lays ahead today. My morning to cook, design some graphics for coaster engravings for the CEO, etch said coaters, afternoon GC duties. Nothing to extreme once the CEO approves the graphics... Happy birthday @Cfhandyman! Sorry for the loss of Minx @Northern Monkey. Always hurts to lose a fur baby but she lived a long life and I'm sure she knew she was loved. Popular Post BIG STU
2 hours ago, Hickory4ever said: Good morning from SW Ontario where fall is back. The mornings are cool and we will have a frost delay for Hickory Friday. We may get an isolated shower but the temperature should be pleasant for this time of year. @BIG STU and I share the view that many things modern in the golf world are rehashes of old concepts. For most of my fifty years of golfing, I tried the newest innovation in search of better scores but found that improving technique paid bigger dividends. Most changes in equipment give modest improvements at best but I encourage everyone to do what makes you feel good. In the last seven years, I have focused more on appreciating the history of the game, especially the equipment used. The biggest differences are in the “woods”. My handicap index with hickory clubs is only 3 points higher than modern, driven by the course rating of playing one tee forward with hickory. My scores are virtually the same. I do enjoy the banter on the forum even though I am not a modern club ho any more. Yep you and I think alike. One thing I like about MGS in all my years here no one has ever given me any flack about discussing vintage clubs. Went out in the shop a few minutes ago and found a Mid Iron I had never hit. I checked it on my machine at 34*. It should suffice for the "cheater" 985 8 iron I have been carrying. I also threw in a labeled "Mashie Niblick" that measures 38*. Going to try both of them tomorrow. There are 2 holes uphill into the wind most of the time I cannot reach with the Niblick or Mashie Niblick especially with a wound ball spinning. Last week it was blowing like crazy and I had to hit the crap out of the Mac 8 iron to get there. I hit a low screamer turn down hook and barely got there. I told my wife that was the difference in modern balls. I hit one of her colored Maxflis and got it to the middle of the green. Just went out to the shop and put my vintage stuff together for Sunday. I decided just for the heck of it to play my 62 Mac FC-4000s. 2 thru 11 iron plus a CF Toney Penna SW. I also put my ball pick up thing on my favorite Bulls Eye a little Honey colored Standard that I call Honey Gold. LOL I was out in my net hitting them at 8 AM. One of my neighbors who "plays" golf and does not know crap about the game or equipment thinks I am nuts. Yesterday other than the Par3 with my wife I was going to step aside of the game for a while. Hitting the irons made me want to get back into it. Also while I was rummaging through the shop I found a laminate Ginty labeled a 7 wood at 29*. It is pristine looks to never been hit. I think I got it at an estate sale. I thought WTH I threw it in the Vintage bag for Sunday Morning play sirchunksalot, Byrnzee, ZJeb67 and 9 others 12 Quote Driver ---- Callaway Big Bertha Alpha Speeder 565 R flex- - 7W TM V-Steel UST Pro Force Gold 65R---- Irons 5 thru PW 1980 Macgregor VIP Hogan Apex steel shafts--- SW -- Cleveland 588 56* S-400 Sensicore --- LW Vokey 58* SM5 L grind--- Putter 1997 Scotty Cameron Santa Fe Fluted Bulls Eye shaft--- Bag TM Flex Lite Stand---- Yeah I know only 11 clubs G

Mine was from the AMVETS club barrel many years ago so another one given new life after its former owner(s) who had in some fashion passed it along. I am interested to know how you like the club when you've had a chance to use it. Yes have been warned not to go down this path but at least have to get their assessment and report as a first step. Then dinner with a couple of old windsurf buddies while my honey has her girls night out Happy happy Friday to all!!! I will give you some advice from experience if I may. Do not push it real hard. I have always been hardheaded and WFO. From a mental aspect I had just retired and was working part time when I got hurt. I had trouble dealing with it. After all I had raced cars on and off, rode motorcycles, been a volunteer firefighter and had parasailed. Only injury I ever got was a spiral wrist fracture in a race car one night. LOL I drove 3 races the next weekend with a shorty cast on. Hard thing for me to fathom was I had a simple accident doing something I had done 10,000 times when the ladder collapsed. It basically ended my truck driving career and really any work even part time ever. But I set my sights on rehabbing for one thing only and that was to play golf and enjoy retirement. After 3 weeks of therapy on the shoulder to start with then it was back therapy. Actually 3 days after being discharged from the hospital I was putting on our putting green with a back brace and crutch using my Bobby Grace Broomstick putter. About another 6 weeks they gave me permission to chip and putt some. LOL me hell no!!! I went on the range with the heaviest clubs I own which are blade CF MacGregors. I was doing 1 hr sessions at the Therapy center then hitting the range at the course. I had 2 setbacks doing this plus improper supervision in therapy. That last is an entirely different story. By being hard headed I set myself back almost 2 years. @JohnSmalls can tell you some of it. He came down and I told him I would play as many holes as I could. I think I lasted 12 holes. Yes I was hardheaded and pushed myself too hard and I have made it my mission to tell and warn others. I never want anyone to go through what my hardheaded self went through because of stupidity William P, Cfhandyman, sirchunksalot and 11 others 12 1 1 Quote Driver ---- Callaway Big Bertha Alpha Speeder 565 R flex- - 7W TM V-Steel UST Pro Force Gold 65R---- Irons 5 thru PW 1980 Macgregor VIP Hogan Apex steel shafts--- SW -- Cleveland 588 56* S-400 Sensicore --- LW Vokey 58* SM5 L grind--- Putter 1997 Scotty Cameron Santa Fe Fluted Bulls Eye shaft--- Bag TM Flex Lite Stand---- Yeah I know only 11 clubs G
