Lacassem hitting area build DIY

Hey everybody!

So lots of stuff online but going to be building a hitting net/cage and hitting platform over the next few months so I can get some swings in. Was gifted a rapsodo so looking to get a good spot for that. 

Lots of stuff online and I have pieced together my own little version which I will be starting this week, so follow along if you have any interest! Has not been very expensive....yet...

Will be outdoors and somewhat enclosed. Plan is next year to actually build a structure/man cave but for now will just be a carport, with some other gems inside it. More to come this week with photos and links to what I used!

Watching this closely. With the new house we will have room to make or build something outside or even do a shed and make a true little sim cave.

This popped up in my YouTube list a few weeks ago.  Looks pretty easy to do; I just wonder about the climate and leaving the electronics in the shed.

Should be fun to follow. Thinking of upping my area as well next year, bigger net, better mat and maybe a rapsodo pro 2. Always happy to watch someone else do it first though.

I was a driving range rat until COVID hit and everything shut down. So, I built a hitting cage a for my backyard. I used 2” PVC pipe with a custom sized net from Just for Nets. It’s 10 feet high, 10 feet wide, by 8 feet deep. I use it multiple times per week with a Rapsodo MLM2Pro. I wish I had done it sooner.

 I’m looking forward to reading about your project’s progress.

Any issues hitting the PVC framing with balls?  Id be concerned about breakage or did you cover the pvc with something?

Heater came in yesterday actually and I put it together:

 

to fill everyone in I’m building a temp structure for this winter and in the spring will be doing a permanent building off one of my sheds. So I’m doing a more permanent hitting screen/net as well as a more permanent hitting mat that will transfer over into that space later. The heater will also be a keeper and wall mounted lol

So that is actually what I am basing my permanent build on lol. Watched that a few weeks back and it sparked my "I need to get something going now temporarily"

Definitely the way to go if you want a structure cost wise. EMT is super simple to work with.

I'm really, really hoping to get my garage finished in the next 18 months and then can look at doing something like this.

Good question.  I built it as a box frame without a lower front rail, but added one for more stability  (I'll try to post some pictures, but it's raining here right now).  I topped a drive and broke the bottom front rail in the middle.  I cut the broken section out and capped the ends leaving a open gap in the middle at the bottom.  I ordered some large pipe insulation and placed it all the way across the front at the bottom.  I also covered the rear lower frame with the pipe insulation.  That actually helps to keep the balls inside the cage.  The cage is wide enough that I've never had a ball hit the side uprights (yet).

 I was going to just slip fit the pipes and fittings so I could take it apart if needed, but with slip fitting the cage was too loose so I glued it.  I haven't needed to take it apart, so gluing it has worked out.

The surprising thing for my project was all of the tweaking I ended up doing after it was put together.   For example, in addition to gluing it together and adding the extra rail and padding, I added weights at the corners after it blew over on a windy day.

I did mine with 1" PVC and slid a 1" EMT inside the top rail to prevent sag. But I covered the PVC with pipe insulation. It's the black kind with the slit that runs the length. Gives a good look and good protection.

Yes going with 1" conduit like this draft. Luckily I have some access to it because its a little more expensive than PVC (ok alot more). Will be protecting with pull noodles for any bounce back and it is going to be 10'x10'x10' full cage netting and a hitting screen.

I did mine with wood, but looking back I would most likely go EMT tubing. Don’t get me wrong wood works great at the moment but the problem I run into is that I have a larger target to hit on the error shots. What I did like about it was the doors I added to allow my wife to still park in the garage and being able to add a back so I never hit the wall behind it. It’s made from 15 studs and two pieces of plywood, and the hinges.

It’s not the prettiest but it works and gets the job done. I’ve sense added an impact screen that was to big but when I redo I’ll make it to fit the screen. That was a mistake I made

The pipe insulation is pretty cheap. Looks classy compared to the colored pool noodles. I had a few pool noodles at first. I used the existing garage door tracks to attach the side net. It slides on the rails so it goes out of the way when I’m not hitting.

Working on the ceiling next. I got 50 2” thick 1’x1’ acoustic panels in black. They delivered this week.
