How'd you play?

Recommended Posts

Played Weissinger Hills today which is a nice public course just east of Louisville. Overall I played well, but thank goodness a scorecard doesn't have pictures! Should really have been at Even or under, some dumb mistakes, poor birdie putts, etc kept that from happening. I'm off work this coming week, so hoping to get a few rounds in, but kids go back to school here so we'll see.20240803_184130.jpg.c81f1982610ab22c914f7d7a9fee6060.jpg

Just posted my personal best, breaking 80 for the first time with a 79. Did it in “boring” fashion. Front nine, shot a 40 with four bogeys and five pars. Back nine, shot a 39 with a double, three bogeys, four pars, but finished with an eagle. Last hole is a par 5, had the wind at my back. Hit a good drive that left me 170 out from an elevated green. Took a seven iron and hit a lower trajectory shot that took a big bounce and ended up here:

IMG_3693.jpeg.3dc335901c5a828b4bce58b86abb8915.jpeg

I was excited about the eagle chance, but had no idea that if I made it, I’d break 80. Canned the putt and, I’ll admit, I did a fist pump. Got a nice surprise when I tallied my score and found out I made 79.

This was especially exciting, as I have come off two relatively poor rounds. Since then, I’ve been working on something with my swing that has (in practice) really helped. It translated today.

Outstanding! I remember how cool it was to get over that hump the 1st time👍🏾👏🏾

Still swinging after all these years

Disappointed and disastrous pro shop match play round today. Lost 6-3.  Had fun, and that's all im in it for.  My partner has played only a handful of times over the last year, amd gave it his all.   My driving was horrendous!  Approach shots were amazing,  and putting was mediocre at best. My partner, aka the kid, was doing great putting though!  He sank a 30+ foot sinking double bender.  Even our opponents were cheering him on.

Not sure what happened,  but I couldn't hold a fairway but twice today.

Do you think hitting in the sim so well yesterday could have distorted my impact feel?

Unfortunately yep! This green sits back into a cul de sac of trees (see pic), and has virtually no airflow most of the time. It looks great in the spring, but gets sun almost all day due to position. No big fans to keep air moving, recipe for disaster. Been this way for years. Rest of the greens look like decent muni greens. It's to the point the course is considering closing this hole, then splitting a par 5 into a par 3 and par 4 which makes sense.

Worst round of the year yesterday 87 (+16). Tough conditions but that only contributed to some bad play. Struggled on the front 9 to hit greens in regulation and my chipping and putting wasn't saving me and struggle out in +7. With the wind my thoughts were that 3 of the par 4s were unreachable in 2 so maybe it wasn't so bad. Started back par, bogey, par still OK. 13th into the wind again unreachable in 2, 2nd shot it was 167yds to clear the ditch, I hit a 3W 200yds carry, it carried the ditch pitch straight right into gorse and gone for a double. Still soldiered on pared 14 and 15. 16 into the wind, left with a tricky chip for 4th, tried to be too cute twice and duffed the chips ended up with a triple. Doubled the 17th ann bogey the last feeling totally beat up.

I feel ya!  (See above post) but I reset at each shot and at each tee box. Sometimes you can't release that from the mind, but it does help.

Just finished the club scramble. It’s a blind draw format with one A player, on B, one C and one D player. Unfortunately or fortunately I was the A player. Anyway we shot -7 with zero Bogeys. Missed some birds because we hit every green in regulation, so that’s 11 missed birdies. Ughhh that’s sad. The winning score was -9. Keep in mind it’s a blind draw so none of us had played together. I’m sure others had but whatever. It was fun and we won a skin worth $85.

Hot and humid morning for our regular 9 holes. Unfortunately, the course was packed with slow groups (and too many inconsiderate/ ignorant golfers), so it took us nearly 3hrs to finish.

The chipping practice yesterday paid dividends. I hit the pin three times with chips within 10yds of the green! Sadly none of them dropped. One ended up 3ft from the cup, one 5ft and the third about 20ft as I was chipping from rough high up behind the green onto a steep downslope, so it was hole out or end up at the front of the green.lol.

No duffs/ fatted chips and distances and flights were what I was picturing before hitting. Big plus!

Score: 38 (+2)

FIR: 2/7 (not the best day off the tee, lol)

GIR: 7/9

Up & Down: 2/3

Two shots cost me the two bogeys. Both were irons going big.

8i: Usual range 165yds +/-5. Actual- (out of rough, so likely low spin flyer) 187yds and beyond the green when I was targeting first 1/3 of the green.

9i tee shot on par 3: Usual target distance for a full-blooded shot ~155yds. Actual- 168yds. I know I pured it but that's long.lol. This gave me a very awkward elevated chip.

I know this gen P790s are known for having hot spots and occasionally going big, but that was frustrating.

Despite the two shots above, there were sufficient positives to feel good going into league on Thursday. Just need to do a little work with the driver on the range.

Swing well everyone!

Tried out a course I haven't played before today in the Chicagoland area, Blackstone Golf Club. I have seen this course on top public Chicago course lists and figured I would check it out. It was about an hour northwest of downtown Chicago and the weather today was very nice, but very hot - mid 80s and humid.

I ended up playing from the tips, which were only about 6750. I soon found out that although this course isn't crazy long, almost every tee shot requires strategy and precision. I hit my 2-iron off the tee quite often due to driver bringing trouble into play. I ended up shooting an 83 (42-41), which I was quite happy with given it was my first time playing this course and how tough the pins were today. My friend I played with just got back from an international trip and joked about how I was "easing him back into golf" with this course. Probably one of the most challenging I've played this year!

I had two birdies on the card, which is always a good feeling. Driving felt fairly solid and I think on my next round there I could know where to miss a bit better in order to lower some scores. I had a good stretch to start the back nine, going -1 through 13, before going double-bogey-bogey-bogey-bogey finish. Not the best ending to the round, but I can't complain too much. Three doubles on the card were the main issue today. Otherwise I'd be in the 70s.

Playing Warren Golf Course at The University of Notre Dame next weekend (Go Irish!) and I'm looking forward to visiting my old alma mater. Until next round...

Such a neat hole. TC had only been open about a year the first time I played it and you could take a big ole bite off that tee if you were feeling brave. But I bet those trees guarding the left shortcut off the tee are much bigger since the last time I made a loop out there.

That’s also the best hole to call the turkeys. My buddy was recently telling me TC adopted the wild turkeys as a mascot and put a turkey logo on some of their merch. My same buddy is on the board at Riverplace and trying to convince them to do the same thing with their ground squirrels. Probably an uphill battle though, because turkey easily beats ground squirrel, IMO anyway. I can see it now… “uhhh, is that supposed to be a big rat?”

Got back out to Windmill Lakes yesterday.

43/42 85, which was OK-ish. Driver was an evenly split 2 way miss with 36% left and right. Only 2 really bad tee shots with slices otherwise everything was just in the rough and quite playable.

Approaches in the heavy wet were not acceptable with 67% short. I need to club up and swing easy when it's wet by the looks of it.

Putting was OK with 32 but there was a lot of prom putting happening with lots of lips being hit.
