Sounds like you found a good ball to meet your game.  It took me a long time to learn not to use all kinds of different scrounged golf balls.  I wasn’t “good” enough to recognize the differences but the more I played the more I paid attention.  I finally settled on a ball and started to become more consistent.  Since then my game has improved a bunch and moved on to a different ball to match the swing.  The ball matters, it matters a lot.  Hopefully you get dialed in quickly and play better each round.

Was able to get out this morning and play with some friends for a change since I'm off work the rest of the week. Played at quail chase here in Louisville which used to be a privately owned public course until 5ish years back when the city took it over. It's one of the nicest public tracts, is a 27 hole layout. My driver was back to being a beast, but i tried a TSR3 and it went 10yds past mine on comparable strikes!!! Don't really need a new driver, buttttt if it has positives over my current PXG then I'm going to be looking.

I played well, had a couple bad holes, but as posted in the Opus testing thread, these wedges just down right impress me. I marked on the card the holes I used them for either approach, or up/down scenarios. The 58° did work, and the Opus line saved my tail big time today....look at all the one putts.....

Sunrise golf is my favorite golf! Don't get me wrong, afternoon golf is good too since the course is dried out. However, something about teeing off when fog is rolling around is awesome!

Shot 43, birdied 18 for a good skin that was the highlight of my round. Iron play was way off. Our trip to Augusta is canceled until next April.

Back from a week of golf in Palm Springs, California. Bermuda can be quite perplexing for those of us that only encounter it on vacation. But there’s nothing like one last taste of summer before fall in Utah. Worst round was an 82, and best was a 76- all scores I’ll happily take the 1st time seeing a course! I also noticed no loss of distance on flushed iron shots: something I didn’t expect coming down to 400 ft from 4000.

A beautiful day today to play golf. Mid 70's, light breeze, sunny but only half course was open. Started their aeration project. Played good. Shot 38. Always happy with that. Now don't take me wrong, I like any birdie or par for that matter. I had a cross-slope putt of 11-12 feet. I aimed about 18 in on the high side. As it approached the hole it started slowing down and curving the way I had hoped. It curved a bit too high and curved around the back of the hole. Directly across from me. It was ever so slowly moving and plopped in. I was using one of those yellow and orange Srixon Z. The slow motion of yellow over orange looked so cool. Love that look.

I played at the Elkridge Club in Baltimore today as a practice round for a upcoming Sr. tournament.  It is the first time I played there and it will definitely help.  There are a lot of elevation changes that make a club or even two difference.  It was good to see that as a preview.  I played the back tees and shot an 80.  I stayed out of trouble off the tee but lost a few approach shots with mis-clubbing and missed on the wrong side of the green.  Knowing those things I feel I can improve on that score.  The greens were about as fast as the backyard green so practicing at home should work out well for getting the pace correct.

I’ve been on the road for work in Virginia since Tuesday evening, after putting in a full day at the office Tuesday in Gettysburg, PA.  So I finished up a little early Wednesday afternoon and decided to see if I could get in a little golf on the trip.  Rather than go to TopGolf, I looked around for a public course in the general direction of my next travel stop, and found Providence Golf Club southwest of Richmond.  The description sounded pretty good, and I wasn’t disappointed!  
 

It had been sprinkling on and off, so the course wasn’t crowded when I got there, and I was able to warm up on their putting green and chipping area, but the range was closed due to all the rain the last week.  But an advantage of largely sandy soil is how fast it drains, and other than a couple of low areas the course was in fantastic shape.  They had aerated a couple of weeks ago, so the greens were slow and a little bumpy, but in good condition.  I’m not used to playing on greens that slow this time of year, but it meant you could hit right to your number from almost anywhere.  
 

The course was immaculate - beautiful rolling hills through wooded parkland, lots of water, some strategically placed naturalized areas guarding greens or forcing layups, playing to specific yardages.  Not knowing my way around I played pretty conservatively on the par 5’s that all seemed to have risk-reward considerations on the second shots: water, ravines, naturalized areas, mature trees.  It made the course play longer than the 6529 yds it said it was from the gold tees (tips).  I highly recommend the course.  Lots of variety in holes, challenging position play, smart layout utilizing the hills and drainages smartly, some blind tee shots and tricky approaches.

I think the controlled, conservative approach played well there, and I was in good control of my game for the most part.  I shot 73 (par 71, rating 71.2), shooting 1 over on each nine, with two birdies.  29 putts, which was the best part to me.  Made a 36’ birdie putt on the par 5 #5, and two great sand saves - one on #2 from the green side bunker to a short side pin to 3’, and the best one from a deep, steep faced bunker that just caught my approach and kicked it back to about 28 yds to a tucked pin short side, downhill from the lip that I hit a spinny one hop and stop to 2’.  My best approach I saved for #18 - a par 5 I hit a 270 yd drive to mid fairway, then a blind 4 hybrid 210 yds to the center of the fairway, leaving about 45 yds to a shallow green, downhill, hidden for all but the top of the flag by a wide naturalized wetland encircling the entire front half of the green.  I hit a perfectly struck 56 degree wedge to 3’ leaving a slightly uphill left to right putt that curled in perfectly for a finishing birdie.

I loved that it was a fast 3:12 round, the course was beautiful (pictures don’t do it justice) and it plays as good as it looks.  
 

Happy with how I hit my driver 10/14 fairways, my new Qi10 4 hybrid was a laser, and my approaches were mostly good 10/18 gir.  But my wedges were dialed from everywhere, including the beach.  I really feel like the Golf Forever workouts are helping a lot with my mobility, balance, strength through range of motion and endurance.  The breathing techniques they teach for lowering heart rate and calming nerves are spot on too.  My only regret is that the season is closing in on us in PA.

I played an 18 hole match of wolf with 3 of my golf buddies on Wednesday. I had the game won by the 10th hole because they all had a pretty rough front 9s and I scored a 1v3 birdie (which doubles points). 

Wolf points: Me=29, vs 17, 9, & 7 respectively.

I ended up shooting a +8, 77. I’m not upset with the score, but my approach game was pretty bad. Even though my approach game was terrible, I played par 3s very well! I was within 15 feet on 4 out of the 5 par 3s. Here are some photos of where I ended up on a couple of the par 3s:

Hole 4, 189yd, 5i, 8’ long

Hole 11, 172yd, 6i, 9’ short

Stats below:

FWs: 6/13 =0.462 , Playable Dr: 9/13 =0.692
GIRs: 5/18 =0.278 
Putts: 27
Up&Down: 6/13 =0.462 

Overall, my driving was ok (2 bad and 2 ended up bad). My GIR was terrible! If you don’t count Par 3s, I hit 1 GIR!! Chipping was ok, but I made a couple of bad club choices. Putting was solid, but didn’t make any long putts (my longest putt made was 8’). 

Bottom line, I had a great time! But there’s always room to improve!

Got out this morning again for some sunrise golf. I was the first out and basically had the course to myself. This allowed my daughter to help shoot some footage I'll post in the Callaway Opus thread in regards to testing. Shot my lowest round at my home course, my GIR was garbage but the Opus line is serious and continues to save my tail! 

Also, if anybody gets Nike Victory Pro 3 spiked shoes, swap out the garbage stock softspikes and get some better ones. I was slipping around yesterday, swapped to the tour flex pro spikes and those made a huge difference going from 6 contact points to 9!!!!....

Rainy day today, but mild in the Pacific Northwest. Started at 10 Celcius and got to about 12 by the time I finished. First one out at 7:30 and played in a quick 2 hours and 5 minutes. Playing partner had the same pace I did and we just flew around the course.

Hit 10 fairways, 14 GIR, 30 putts, 2/4 up and ins. 4 birdies 2 bogeys for 69.

Have been playing so poorly of late, the last 2 games have seen a significant turnaround. Can't say what it might be a result of, my 60th round of the year, maybe just playing out of the crappy stuff.

Now, really looking forward to the last month of Men's Club and getting swings in before the weather turns really awful.

Got out for a round this afternoon. Felt good to be back on the course after having to take almost two weeks off.

I was ecstatic to find out I haven’t lost too much distance. I haven’t had solid food in two weeks so so was worried about stamina. But I walked the course without an issue and managed two under on the front 9 and two under on the back 9 for a 68. The Vice irons are still working out wonderful. I couldn’t be more pleased with them.

It’s 80 degrees and sunny in October, so what’s not to love about that?

Nice round with my Wife and a friend. Was told by both of them that I looked very relaxed during the round which can sometimes be a challenge. I told myself that I wasn’t going to really care about what actually happened during the round, and just hit the shot that was in front of me.

Hit an awesome drive on the first hole (Ranger completed me), hit some good shots, hit some bad ones. Made some pars, made some doubles. Starting to get back my confidence with my wedges (really need that).

Score wasn’t great, but was able to spend a Friday afternoon on the course instead of the office, and I’ll take that every time.

I've been playing now for 54 years . . . I've had a single digit handicap for probably 50 years, down to a 2 when I was in my 20's. First time breaking 70 was in Edmonton at the Mayfair Golf and Country Club in. It was a par 70 and I finished my junior career there before moving back to Calgary. So, when I was 18 or 19.

Managed to get the opportunity to play both yesterday and today at the same course with the same people making up our foursome.

Thursday was a 12:00PM tee time, today was an 11:00AM start. Weather both days very different too.

Thursday was a picture-perfect day for golf, low 70's at the start reaching upper 70's through the afternoon, with plenty of sunshine and no wind to speak of.

Today was much cooler, low 50's to start, low 60's through the afternoon, and a strong 15-20MPH wind from the northeast. 

Today the I had the mindset to hit approach shots lower, taking the wind out of play if possible, and it led to less GIR's, but unless the ball is on the actual putting surface, I don't count it as a GIR.

Some pictures and both cards from each day are below.

THURSDAY

Got out yesterday with one of my fave cartners and since it was 73 and sooper sunny, we immediately ran into a log jam on the first tee and here’s where it pays to know the owner and his staff - not only had we been greeted in the clubhouse like it was an episode of Cheers, but Don looked at the first tee then at us, and gave us the old chin up-head nod for the tenth tee. Of course we were just gonna get in the jam later but at least we had 9 holes of millionaire’s golf. 
 

It was not our greatest round, and eventually we just stopped keeping score. It was 58 and dewy as we went out and by the end of the first 9, 72 and gorgeous. So the greens were slow slow suddenly not slow! 
 

Eventually we made the turn into the log jam and basically spent the next 2.5 hours waiting for what appeared to be a two team, 4 man scramble. As there was a break behind us, we just started hitting second shots etc. I’ve been working on hitting down in the ball with wedges per my “caddy” (he’s actually my club fitter), but what I can do in the sim I can’t quite get on the grass. 
 

I could complain about the score but I won’t. Only lost 2 balls, putted well, had a par and 2 bogeys on the par 3s, and hit 8 of the 12 fairways I pull driver on. I actually played well save for one area, and that was wedges. And it was the first full round I’ve been able to play with the Vokeys from my Vokey app review. And I must confess it was a nightmare. I’m hoping it’s just because I usually take a minute to get used to clubs. But I might put my Clevelands back in the bag for tomorrow just to not be frustrated.

Sorry to hear you weren't well, glad you are recovering and able to not only play again, but play really well!!

I just checked out the Vice site to get some more info on the irons. The links aren't working to provide me more technical details. 

Which irons did you choose? Did you get fitted? Do they have many options like graphite shafts and mid-size grips? They look nice and I'm starting to get in the mindset of picking up what is likely to be my last set of clubs as I ease into my late 60's!

Check out the Vice Iron Testing thread. 

This should give you a lot of info. I was fit two years ago by True Spec for other irons. I was on a zoom meeting with Vice and after a lengthy discussion they kept the same specs to build my clubs. You can get fit at a Club Champion. They are the only fitter Vice uses that has their components. I’m in the players clubs VGI 01. I do have graphite and midsize grips.

great post, fun to know the owner and staff and get a quick 9 in before the "log jam". Hitting down or "compressing" the ball is a good thing, it helps when there are imperfections in the fairways, which there are a lot at times lol.

Give your Pokey's some time and work with them around the practice greens etc. sometimes it is just getting used to the "look" of the wedge or the different shaft, it is always a bit more getting used to new wedges other than regular clubs for some reason.

I did notice how enormously heavy my bag seemed, more than just an extra club ought to make it (my fitted set is 12 clubs with 54 and 58 wedges, so the Vokes added a third at 50). Was just cleaning the clubs and the Vokey heads are noticeably way heavier than the Clevelands. I’m sure that’s going to take a long time to get used to.

interestingly enough I found my new vokey's heavier as well, my new ones have a "wedge shaft" in them which is 20 grams heavier than my shafts I have in my Takomo irons.

I have matching Recoils in both, so it’s deffo the heads.

It was a beautiful day so I decided to head to the course and play some golf.  

37/39:76    10/14 FW     10 GIR   31 Putts (2 3 putts)

Overall I was really happy with how I played today.   Strokes gained against a 0 handicap was solid.  Even with the 2 3 putts I felt like I putted well.  50% up and downs.  

 

It's October and the trees still haven't started changing colors.
