I shot a 75 today (my best this year and one off my personal best ever) I had a chip in birdie and then….. a hole in one! Can’t even describe the feeling of seeing the ball drop into the hole off the tee. 149 yd shot, downwind. Pin is on the front. I played a full PW with the slightest fade. Hit 5 ft to the left of the flag, checked up on the side hill and started falling to the right towards the hole. The anticipation was real as I didn’t know if it was tracking or not. I saw it roll into the flag stick, catch the lip of the cup, do a 180 around the flag before falling in. Beautiful weather, incredible day. I’ve had many lows while playing, but this is why I love going out again and again. The chase for perfection and today was pretty dang perfect. I really took my time deciding on shots and it paid off! I actually didn't hit very many good shots from the tee today (bad case of the hooks with driver and Super Hybrid), but I hit my irons very well, chipped OK and putted excellently. And, down the stretch, my driver perked up for me. Played the front nine at even par for the first time ever, highlighted by a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 5. I was +2 coming to No. 16 (probably the second hardest hole on the course) and blasted a beautiful drive that led to a par. I very nearly hooked my tee shot on No. 17 out of bounds left, making a mess of the hole with a double bogey to get to +4 heading to No. 18 tee. (My previous best was +4 during Cobra Connect last summer.) Most of the pressure was off after the double bogey. I uncorked the longest drive I've ever hit on No. 18, 280 yards uphill, leaving 95 to the flag. Lined up a 58 wedge, landed a few yards short of the flag and ended up with my best approach all day. Knocked in the birdie putt for a new personal best. Feels amazing to put a great round together this early in the season. Lots of offseason work paying off! The league is two man teams, but each partner is playing an individual match. Tradition in the league is that either partner can concede a putt, but apparently that isn't absolute. I hit a lag putt a couple feet past the hole. I would have tapped it in for a half, but I would have been standing on the line of my opponent's partner. The partner said "That's good," and I whacked it away. My opponent objected, "I didn't give you that putt!""Your partner did." "It's my call, not his! You're lying five." Seriously? I took two more putts from 20 feet for a four putt, and obviously lost the hole.On the next hole I make birdie, and he gets upset when I don't concede his seven footer for double. On the last we both have relatively short par putts, though I'm slightly away. He asks, "Good, good?" He was already reaching for his marker when I said, "No. You get a stroke on this hole." I expected him to make the putt, and he did, but he was visibly annoyed. I wasn't conceding the putt, which was conceding the hole, which was conceding the match. Hmmm.... I've never played in a match that somebody other than the opponent can give a putt or concede a hole. Even in our league, where it seems most rules are merely suggestions, only the opponent gives putts. While golf is traditionally a Gentleman's Game maybe that old time description is no longer valid. But it is still a game of sportsmanship where unlike any other, players call penalties on themselves. In my opinion the worst case scenario for your situation since the tradition had been established, is your opponent says "That was my partners fault but you should have double checked with me. I will honor it this hole because my partner said it was good. But moving forward no putts are good unless I clearly say so". Best case scenario is he honors his partners declaration and gives him a little reprimand for over stepping his non authority. Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
I can appreciate how some of you feel. It was a long gruling, baking in the sun, six plus hour round today. It was for charity so it was all good. I played Prairie Highlands near Kansas City. It was a team event. I knew we were going to be going for things that I normally wouldn't do so I put some free bee balls in play. That was a mistake. You get used to knowing what your ball will do and how it feels. So needless to say I did not play my best for the first three holes. They were all pars, even the first par 5 was a par. So I took the balls out of play and put my normal balls in play. The ah ha moment clicked. Then the birdies started dropping and our team was hunting fairways and greens. We finished up at 11 under which was respectable. Too good to win B flight (which was 9 under) and not good enough to win A flight at 19 under. But we had a great time with customers and raising money for charities. sirchunksalot, MattF, cnosil and 12 others 14 1 Quote Driver, TSi 1 S Flex 3 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 7 Wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 Hybrid King Tec MMT R Flex Irons, Tour UST Recoil 95 R Flex (6 - Gap) Wedges, Snakebite KBS Hi- Rev2.0 54* & 60* Agera 35" Ultralight 14-way Cart Bag
Popular Post MaxEntropy
GOOD NEWS: I had perhaps my best day ever with driver last night! I hit 6/7 fairways and I had a good shot at the green on the one I missed. @DiscipleofPenick had mentioned the way I drove the ball Saturday was about the best he had seen, so hopefully this is a good sign. BAD NEWS: Putting woes from Saturday continued - pace was off all night. If I count the times I putted from the fringe, I struck the ball with a putter 21 (!!!!) times WORSE NEWS: Approach game was abysmal, at best. It was as if I had never held an iron before, much less hit one. There was a little bit of everything - fat, thin, shank, way out on the toe... I just could not find the center of the face. Only two decent shots all night and they were short, partial wedges. By the time I got to the 5th hole, all confidence in them was gone. I fought like hell to stay in a good frame of mind with an iron in my hand, but it never really came around and each subsequent poor shot just added to the lack of confidence. It was about the weirdest version of bogey golf I have played. I feel fortunate to have ended up +9 the way I was hitting irons. If driver had been off too, I may have chucked my bag into a pond and walked away forever - it was that kind of night. We have our league end-of-season outing Saturday and we are playing a lone wolf scramble. Since I have the lowest handicap in our group, I "get" to play the 5 hardest holes on my own. I've never played the course, but from Google Earth, nothing appears to be super hard about them, just long-ish, with two of them being par 5's. If I continue to drive the ball well and even partially sort out approach, I don't really have any concerns. Range session already in the plans. JerryB
Owen and I played the back nine at River Heights today, joined by our buddy Paul. Paul has not played well the past year or so but he was strong today. Brutally ugly with his driver but everything else was good. He shot 49, breaking 50 for the first time in years. He looked happy and we were thrilled for him! Owen played pretty well, shooting 44 and he had a real nice stinger he hit out the trees that saved par. Cool looking shot. I played well, too. Other than a blowup snowman on a par four, I was okay. No three putts and I can't recall the last time I said that. 47 (+11) for me. Popular Post Grand Stranded
I played the second round of our members league championship yesterday. After finishing way back in the first round last week I caught a couple of breaks in this one. First, we played the hardest and longest of the 3 courses we rotate on, and second, after almost 24 hours straight of very hard rain, the course was playing even longer than normal, and it was CPO, which is a grind in the hot, muggy weather. If I ever was going to make up ground, this was the day. I knew a lot of guys would struggle. Blind squirrels find nuts, and I shot an 83/net 70 which surprisingly was good enough for 4th in gross (I’m all but out of that after last week) but I won the low net! The good news is I moved all the way up to 5th in net (still 4 shots back though), although winning iI is doable, isn’t likely very likely. The cream rose to the top today, and the 4 guys ahead of me are all good players. It will be a big ask to pass them all in the final round. My goal is to at least finish top 3, and get a medal, but I’m pretty proud of the way I battled today after last weeks disappointment, and I won a few $$$$ for coming in first today, so there’s that. Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
Another tough day at work today. Met cutomers for breakfast, lunch, and 18 holes of golf in Kansas City. The good, I played well. Unknown course to me and no one else played it before either. I was 3 over for the day and played back a set of tees. The bad, Tee times were called in and upon arrival we payed. Got to the first tee and it was empty. That was a good thing. We get on the first green and we find out that they were just punched (big holes) and heavily sanded. We were charged full price and not even told the greens were just airraited the day before. The course should have told us. We would have been ok with it if we were at least told. It just felt like they were being dishonest. Probably would have scored better if the greens were in good condition. A few birdie putts were left short or knocked off line by the punched holes. Going to try a dewsweeper round this morning and see if it had dried out some. tony@CIC, Kenny B, Rickp and 3 others 6 Quote Driver ---- Callaway Big Bertha Alpha Speeder 565 R flex- 5W TM V-Steel Fubuki 60r--- 7W TM V-Steel UST Pro Force Gold 65R----- 9 W TM V Steel TM MAS stiff---- Irons 2015 TM TP CB Steel Fiber 95 R--- GW Callaway Mack Daddy 2 52* shaft unknown junk pile refugee. Popular Post Syks7
Fun day on Vacation. 45/42 87 at Edisto Plantation course in South Carolina. Usually when I'm down this way I play with my FIL, but he isn't feeling great so I grabbed the second tee time of the day and went out. Played reasonably well considering I played a course I've never seen before with rental clubs. (Wilson D9 SGI). The clubs were okay. Looked super clunky to me after playing MP60s for the last few months. But I hit them well enough, I just had a hard time judging distance with them. The course was fun. Tight, lots of water(I donated a few balls), with an interesting layout. It was a nice easy walk and I had a great time playing solo. 3 hours walking, without pushing too hard, though I'm definitely beat now. Popular Post CarlH
Another stink-o day today. Team event of 3 best net. I was the A player and stunk it up, but the team played well enough to take 2nd of 7 teams and to win 3 team skins. Our opening hole (and first skin) was a short par 3. I hit my ball just past the pin and it spun back to 4 inches below the hole for a tap in birdie. The D player (with a stroke) rolls in a 25 foot putt for birdie, net one. Add in a par from one of the other players and we hole out with a net score of 6 and started the round with the lead at 3 under. By the 6th hole, we're at 8 under. We start counting our chickens before they hatch....I lose my game somewhere along the line, the B player is no help, and suddenly we're depending on our C and D players. We go from 8 under to as low as 3 under, fight our way back to 7 under for the lead again, only to give 2 back on the final hole. We're still in the lead, but last team picks up 2 on their final hole and we take 2nd. Popular Post GolfSpy_APH
Couple days removed from my round I have some follow up with thoughts and so on. So I played pretty well. Had a couple awful blow up holes, but overall feel like the game is coming around. Had 7 pars and a birdie. By no means lit it up, however learning a few things and have to say now that I have played the course a couple times it helps a lot as well. Knowing where to miss or where to bail helps out so much. My goal for this course will be to break into the 70's before seasons end. I have shot 84, 87, 84 so I know it is within reach. Today is a practice day and given that putting, chipping have actually been really on point I'll continue my driving and approach play. That being said after spending that hour with GC Quad and getting my numbers for my irons it helps so much. Way way more confidence in yardages and knowing what club to pull and when. Popular Post Kenny B
Not me, but a shoutout to my lovely wife. She insisted I take her out to dinner last night. Yesterday, she won the summer-long double elimination tournament 1UP, never losing a match, to become the 2022 Columbia Point Ladies Match Play Champion... successfully defending her title. She had to give her opponent a stroke on each of the 14 hardest holes.
