Popular Post GolfSpy_APH
Can shoes make a real impact on a golfer's ability to swing faster and increase their swing speed? This is what SQAIRZ has claimed with their previous models and built their platform on. This Testers Wanted opportunity from SQAIRZ golf shoes includes their new VELO golf shoe, the first-ever speed-rated golf shoe. About SQAIRZ VELO This shoe is packed with technology and some pretty bold claims. In SQAIRZ testing, they found golfers using the VELO averaged an increase of 2.9 MPH in swing speed and tighter dispersion. That alone is huge. The other technology features that the SQAIRZ VELO incorporates are as follows: Proprietary SQAIRZ NRG-Direct Technology for a reduction in energy loss. Patented SQAIRZ toe box. Proprietary Sta-Put lacing system. New LaceLock system. Patented AI-generated “smart-traction” system. 100% waterproof but breathable materials. New lightweight-response SQAIRZ NFG-Foam for additional comfort. As I said, a lot of technology in a shoe. With the claims of a significant increase in swing speed and a new style, these are a must-test for our forum members. Popular Post funkyjudge
INTRODUCTION: Hello again, fellow spies! Although I am known as "funkyjudge" (a nickname that I have had for more than 20 years), my name is actually Doug Mael. I am a semi-retired Professional Clubfitter and Clubmaker, and I live in Southeastern Pennsylvania (about 25 miles from Philadelphia and 10-12 miles from Trenton, NJ). I'm 75 years old as of last month, and have been playing golf for 39 years. I'm a competitive golfer and play in several leagues, and on two travel golf teams, plus on a winter golf tour that plays mostly in NJ plus the occasional tournament in PA. I'm also a traveling golfer, and take frequent golf trips throughout the USA and in the British Isles (mostly Scotland and NW England). Until a couple of bouts with cancer and some other serious illnesses over the past 7 years, I played to a single-digit handicap. However, my handicap is currently 14.5 and I have only been below a 13 Index twice in the last 5 years. Because I have prior experience with Squairz golf shoes, I am really excited to be included in this test. I currently own three pairs of Squairz shoes, and the two pairs that are newer than my 5 year old pair of original Squairz are in my regular golf shoe rotation. These two pairs (Speed Bold in black and Arrow model in red, white and blue — mostly white) are both very comfortable and supportive. However, I'm especially interested in the VELO model from Squairz because they are about a pound per pair lighter in weight and have the new comfort-fit foam footbed, both of which are targeted to provide greater walking comfort on the golf course .... did I mention that I almost always walk the course, often while carrying my clubs? If these shoes are as comfortable and lightweight as advertised, while still providing superior support and stability, they will DEFINITELY be a regular fixture in my golf shoe lineup and rotation. UNBOXING AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS: My Squairz VELO shoes arrived this afternoon (it's nice to have the Squairz warehouse less than 30 miles from my house!) I was very pleased with the appearance of the shoes and the "bonus" Squairz socks, plus the nice little note on the inside of the box top: These are definitely some great-looking shoes, and they feel great on my feet, too!: (sorry if the photos are out of order; it wasn't my fault. The MGS system has a mind of its own). My first impressions are VERY positive! The shoes look and feel great, and I have been walking around in the house with them on for almost an hour now. They are not only quite stylish, they also feel nice and are lighter on the feet than my other earlier-generation Squairz shoes. As long as the weather is cooperative next week (unlike this week, when we have had more than 5.75 inches of rain and scattered thunderstorms), I will be playing three rounds of golf while wearing these Squairz VELO shoes between next Monday and Thursday. I will post updated impressions and data after I get them out on the course and put them to the "playing test". Second Round with the Squairz VELO Shoes: I played 18 holes this morning wearing the Squairz VELO shoes. Although carts were required, I walked the full 18 and let my playing partner have the cart. I have to say that these Squairz shoes are not totally comfortable for me when walking 18 holes on a hilly course, and around the 14th or 15th hole I started to get cramps in both of my arches. I really miss having my custom orthotics in the shoes! I communicated with the Moderators/Test Leaders and they said by all means that I should install my preferred orthotics in these Squairz shoes (as I have done in every pair of Squairz shoes that I own), and that has been done. The shoes already feel 100% better on my feet! Unfortunately, there will be no updates at all this week, as I am very sick (looks like it's RSV) and I won't be playing any golf for several days. 4/29/24 Update (another six rounds in the books): I have now worn the Squairz VELO shoes for six more rounds (three 9-holers and three 18-holers). This makes it eight total rounds that I have played while wearing the Squairz VELO shoes (five 18-hole rounds and three 9-hole rounds). In more than half of these rounds, I have walked and in the other three I rode in a cart because I was recovering from two weeks with pneumonia. After my first nine-hole walking round about 3.5 weeks ago, I put a pair of Protalus orthotic insoles in these VELO shoes because I have very high arches and I got cramps in the arches of my feet. I have not had any foot pain since then, and the shoes have been very comfortable for walking 18 holes, even on two consecutive days and 3 out of 4 consecutive days last week. These VELO shoes continue to provide fantastic support and they are considerably lighter in weight than any other Squairz golf shoes that I have previously worn. The weight difference is fairly noticeable after walking 18 holes (16,000-plus steps). I cannot say whether these Squairz shoes have helped me to increase my clubhead speed, and in fairness because I have been wearing Squairz shoes for more than two years before I was selected to participate in this test, I seriously doubt that I am experiencing further gains in clubhead speed. However, the stability that is provided by these shoes certainly gives me the confidence to “swing aggressively” and I have consistently been hitting the ball as far or farther than I generally hit it with all of the clubs in my bag. I am definitely very happy with these golf shoes, and with the great stability and support that they provide! FINAL UPDATE PRIOR TO SCOTLAND TRIP: Yesterday afternoon, I played my 15th round of golf while wearing the Squairz VELO golf shoes. This has consisted of (7) 18-hole rounds and (8) 9-hole rounds. The last three rounds, I have walked and carried my clubs for two reasons -- 1.) I am getting ready for Scotland, and 2.) I wanted to test and see which carry bag and bag contents (other than my golf clubs, of course) will be most comfortable for my caddies and for me on the days when caddies are not to be provided. My travel bag is being packed today and will be picked up tomorrow for shipping to Scotland, as is always my practice on these golf trips, and the next time I will see my clubs, and the Squairz VELO golf shoes will be on May 25 when we get to the Fairmont St. Andrews Hotel. Luckily, I have lots of other golf clubs and two other serviceable pairs of older Squairz golf shoes for use in the three rounds of golf that I have scheduled in PA, NJ and DE prior to our flight to the UK next Friday. Now, to the Squairz VELO shoes -- They continue to provide great stability and comfort while walking the golf courses and hitting shots, as well as for my range sessions which happen prior to every round. The shoes still look virtually brand-new, and they are unquestionably the easiest golf shoes to keep clean that I own or have ever owned. In addition, the soles are much easier to keep free of twigs, stones, compacted leaves and other debris. I don't know what Squairz has done to make this happen, but it is greatly appreciated by me! Next reports will come from "the home of golf" in about 12 to 14 days, followed by my final review when we return to the USA on June 9, 2024. Pre-Scotland Update: (I squeezed in one more round following what was to have been the “final” pre-Scotland post) My Squairz VELO shoes have now arrived at St Andrews, along with my golf clubs, some rain and cooler-weather gear, and I will be arriving there tomorrow (Saturday, May 25) to join them and begin my six rounds in six days Scottish Links Golf Extravaganza. Up until two or three days ago, the weather forecast was good to very good for the next week-plus, with only two days (Sunday and Wednesday of next week) with light showers and no days with a rain probability of more than 37%. However, that went directly out the window yesterday afternoon, when the forecast showed a dramatic change, with rain forecast for EVERY DAY, and rain probabilities of 55%-60% or greater on all but one day. In addition, temperatures will be in the upper 40s to mid-50s farenheit on all but one day, when the earlier forecast was calling for temps in the 60s on all but one day, and that single day was still forecast to be in the mid-upper 50s. It certainly looks like these Squairz shoes will be put to a rigorous waterproof test. I will post pictures to the extent possible, pending cooperation from my caddies and playing partners ... and there is sure to be at least one gratuitous Swilcan Bridge photo from the Old Course. EDIT: The heaviest steady rain is now forecast for Sunday morning, with a 80% probability of heavy and steady rain in the morning with 15-25 MPH winds for a bit of added “comfort”). This is when we play the new Castle Course at the St Andrews Links, with an 8:30 AM tee time. The second-heaviest rain is forecast for Monday, when we play the Old Course. We go north to Carnoustie on Tuesday, where it's going to be fairly wet with a high temperature of 58* F on Tuesday. Squairz VELO Shoes make an appearance at The Old Course: Played the Old Course this morning wearing my Squairz VELO shoes (see pic’s below). It only rained on us on 2.5 holes today and I beat yesterday’s score by 7 strokes (could easily have broke 80, but I shot +4 on those two rainy holes). The shoes are holding up great and providing great walking comfort, stability and comfort (33,000+ steps over these first two St Andrews rounds, several uneven and hilly lies during both rounds). I must give kudos to @wheelieb — he was absolutely correct about the “nubs” on the Squairz laces (and I was wrong!) At least 4 of the rubber-like nubs have now worn off of each of the laces exactly in the area where I double-knot them. Minus onepoint at the minimum for this. Edited 12 hours ago by funkyjudge FINAL REVIEW - JUNE 7, 2024: After more than 25 rounds of golf (all walked without the use of a powered cart or even an electrified "golf trolley"), here is my final review and observations regarding the Squairz VELO golf shoes (I would also post pictures of the shoes, but they are lost somewhere in transit from North Berwick, Scotland and my home in Pennsylvania). I shipped the clubs nearly a week ago, and was informed that my golf travel bag would be delivered to my home by June 5, but it has somehow been diverted to Cincinnati, OH and has been sitting at a DHL facility there for three days. First Impressions (10 out of 10) -- See unboxing and first impressions header at the beginning of this post for narrative and photos from April 2, 2024. The shoes are very stylish, in my opinion, and look as good following these 20-odd rounds and lots of mud, rain, sand, gorse and other nasty stuff as they did on day #1. My very first impressions were great and nothing has happened to take away from that. The lighter weight of these shoes is both noticeable while walking and playing golf, yet that weight reduction has done nothing to take away from the comfort, support and durability of these shoes. Aesthetics (9 out of 10) -- I still love the way that these shoes look, and the look is typical of Squairz shoes (they are Squairz, so they are going to have a square toe area and wide forefoot section)! People tend to either love this or hate it; I fall into the "love it" camp. The VELO model has a more modern, contemporary look. Again, I love it, but not all people do, and I heard some sharp jabs from both golfing buddies here in the USA and a few of the guys on my recent Scotland golf trip (particularly a couple of the Scottish caddies, who hated the look). Of course, I am a 75 year old golfer who wears slim-fit stretchy "jeans-style" golf slacks and I also own and wear some Bylt and Greyson golf shirts and hoodies, similar to what Justin Thomas wears, so I'm firmly in the "modern golf apparel look" camp, and the Squairz VELO shoes fall squarely into that camp (pun intended). The one point deduction, which could be levied here or in the discussion of durability, comes from the fact that the rubbery "nubs" used in the Squairz "Sta-Put Lacing System" wear off after tying and untying the shoes several times, and that gives a bit of a less-than-desirable look, but it's a minor niggle. The shoes are definitely waterproof, but I did get some moisture in my socks on one occasion (playing the Carnoustie Links in a fairly heavy rain). At first, I thought that the shoes may have leaked, but I found no evidence of that. Next, I thought that water from the tops of my shoes may have been wicked down to the tops and bottoms of my feet, which may indeed have been the case. The shoes themselves dry VERY quickly, and they seem to breathe quite well, because I have not had sweaty feet while wearing them, even in 85* to 94* F. weather while playing at home. The good part of that Sta-Put lacing system is that the shoes remain tied tightly, even after about 3 or 4 of the rubbery nubs came off of each lace. Other than wearing the shoes to and from the bus or the locker room, I would absolutely not suggest wearing them off the golf course ... and definitely not in the restaurant or lounge at the course. They are stylish enough, but to me it is still not appropriate to wear such spiked golf shoes indoors, for the most part. Fit and Comfort (18.5 out of 20) -- Overall, the comfort provided by these shoes is very good to excellent, but I did have to insert my own custom orthotics in the shoes, as I have very high arches and the Squairz "dual density compression foam footbed" was not supportive enough for those high arches. Otherwise, they are extremely comfortable to me (I did walk 23 rounds of golf in them after inserting my orthotic inserts after two rounds with the Squairz insoles in the shoes). This included 6 rounds on some of the top Scottish links courses, five of which had significant elevation changes and many uneven lies, and all of which had scores of pot bunkers where the golfer rarely if ever gets a level stance. As with all Squairz golf shoes that I have owned and worn (this is the fourth pair of them), sizing is slightly tricky. It is recommended that all golfers should size down 1/2 size with Squairz shoes, and I concur with this. I wear size 10.5 in virtually every other golf shoe brand, and an 11 in Nike shoes, but size 10 in Squairz is always a perfect fit for me! There was virtually no break-in period for these shoes, and I wore them to play 9 holes of golf on the day that they arrived, and 18 holes the next morning. I did get arch cramps on that second day, but that was before I switched to a pair of my custom orthotics in them, which I took out of my pair of 2023 Squairz shoes. If I had to change anything about these shoes, it would be to put a more supportive arch section in the insoles, but that would probably not work for the vast majority of golfers who don't have extra-high arches as I do. On-Course (20 out of 20 .... no doubt about it!) -- In my opinion, Squairz golf shoes are the best shoes for secure traction on the golf course, no matter what type of conditions and terrain you encounter! I did a little test in Scotland, wearing a pair of Skechers Pro 4.0 shoes for one round in the midst of my six rounds on those Scottish links. It was not raining that day, but there had been light rain the previous day; however, I slipped several times while swinging the club while wearing the Skechers. Meanwhile, I played three rounds in extremely wet conditions while wearing these Squairz shoes and never had the slightest hint of a slip, even in the midst of torrential downpours at the St Andrews Castle Course and Carnoustie. I find that ALL Squairz shoes provide great stability during the swing, but it appears that this feeling is not quite universal. It is hard to say for sure whether these (or any) golf shoes definitely provide more distance when you hit the ball while wearing them. However, my Garmin Approach S70 GPS watch, which tracks shot distances on every shot I take, said that my driving average for the entire Scottish trip was 255 yards, and this included several tee shots with a 4-wood. My longest drive on last week's trip was 281 yards (a little downhill), and I also had a 268 yard drive on the "Road Hole" (#17 at The Old Course at St Andrews Links). My driving average for all of 2024 is about 243 yards, so I did get some added yardage in Scotland. However, 17 of the rounds that factor into my 2024 shot distance averages have also been played while wearing the Squairz VELO shoes. The Good, the Bad, the In-Between (19 out of 20) -- I think that I have pretty-much covered all of this in the sections above, but I will give a quick summary here: Good - Support and comfort (especially after my orthotics were inserted); TRACTION; some of my longest drives of the year; stylish shoes (in my opinion); and did I mention TRACTION? Bad (and it's pretty minor) - Rubber-like "nubs" wear off of the laces after 15 or so rounds; in my case, orthotics were required to achieve perfect walking and playing comfort. In-Between - There is really nothing that I'd put in this category. Play It or Trade It? (20 out of 20) -- If you have read this far, you already know that I will continue playing golf in these Squairz shoes until the day that they are so worn-out as to be useless .... and based on past experience, I expect that this will be quite a long time! These Squairz are better than all of my past Squairz shoes (with the possible exception of my Squairz Arrow Americana model with the "Country Sole"). There is currently no other golf shoe brand that I would rather wear, period. Conclusion -- Just re-read the On-Course and Play It or Trade It? sections above, and you have my conclusion. I LOVE SQUAIRZ GOLF SHOES and the VELO model may just be the best model so-far! Final Score -- 96.5 out of 100 These shoes are an A+ for me, and when I was an Adjunct Professor at Drexel University, I was known as a "tough grader" (some MGS Forum members called me worse that that when I tested and scored the Callaway Paradym Irons)!!! Popular Post Wheelieb
Introduction: Well, it’s time to address the elephant in the room…I can’t do wheelies. At best I can maybe pull the front tire of a bicycle off the ground for all of maybe a second…. My name is Branden last name is Wheeler, everyone I work with calls me Wheels, wasn’t sure if that handle was taken so I went with wheelieb. I am 38 years old, live in Virginia close to Yorktown. I started golfing regularly in 2020 but had played numerous times before then. On my deployment in 2017 while in Germany, we tried to go to a course and play out in town, but you need what is called a “Platzreife”. So, base course it was while there. I am a well-traveled person as this coming October I will have visited my 5th continent by going to South America. It’s time, though, to call it a career and move on to the next one. After my deployment in 2017, the guy I golfed with left and transferred across the States I then didn’t touch any clubs until 2019 when I got an old Top Flite set from one of the guys I worked with. Naturally, I needed to get shoes. And the first pair of shoes I got were Adidas Tech Response 2.0. I learned real quick that in Florida, you can count on it raining at least weekly. Now add the Adidas Tech Response just left my feet in a soupy shoe. To mitigate this, I decided to buy some Adidas Code Chaos BOA spikeless shoes. They were Waterproof and spikeless. They were 100 times more comfortable as well. Virginia doesn’t get as much rain and actually gets dry. I went looking for a new pair of shoes that were breathable and found the NIKE Roshe G spikeless shoe. However, I needed to find a new waterproof shoe, and found the FJ Superlites XP and FJ Tour X With that out of the way, what I will be looking for is comfort and little foot fatigue across 18 holes. With the shoes being breathable, yet waterproof, I am looking to see if my feet stay drier than my other waterproof shoes. Right now, my driver club head speed is between 109-110 mph so, if I reach 111-112 mph on average while testing that would be a confirmed claim. I have a pretty good dispersion front to back, but side to side I need to bring that in to hit more fairways. With the claim they help with better dispersion, I feel that is also a bold claim. That will be seen with my on course testing. I am also interested in seeing how the AI-generated “Smart-Traction” system works and if it keeps me from slipping while swinging. I am excited to get these shoes and put them through the ringer to not only see if the claims are true but also how well they hold up in not only wet environment, but dry environment as well. Unboxing/First Impressions: After receiving the box, I was ecstatic to open it up. I’m not used to receiving shoes through the mail, so to open these and see they brightness of the white and the nice blue accents was great. The note and the pair of socks were quite a surprise. While I was able to talk with Mr. Winskowicz, I felt getting that call didn’t prepare me for the way they were actually going to look. To say I was surprised is not a good enough word to use to describe them. Yes, the pictures online give you an idea of what they look like. For me, it was something I wasn’t used to seeing where they were way better in person. The next thing that caught my eye were these small square things on the laces. Talking with Mr. Winskowicz I learned that these were part of the lace lock system. This will definitely be something that is going to be tested to see if this keeps the shoes tight and not allow them to become loose. My next observation was noticing that the toe was actually more square than what I thought it would be. This not a bad thing aesthetically. I actually like the look of that squared off toe vice a rounded toe for golf shoes. That’s a surprise for me as I am not a fan of squared toed shoes. Doesn’t matter if they are boots either. I’m just not a fan of them. Admittedly, I really didn’t know much about the company. With that said, any company claiming they can possibly give you up to two mph swing speed has got to be at the top of the list to try, right? And here I am about to try them. The big thing I noticed when I put them in, the tongue of the shoe didn’t slide down either the left or right side of the shoe. It stayed on top of my foot where it is supposed to be. That is a big plus. Also, please forgive my not so hairy ankles as my work boots basically rip the hairs out. I have to say that wearing them, I don’t really feel like I’m wearing spike golf shoes. I did think that was going to take some time getting used to, but I can honestly say that it couldn’t be any further from the truth. I have wide feet as well. Wide enough my wife tells me I have “duck feet” all the time. I think she’s just jealous that I swim faster than her. But the shoes didn’t feel constrictive, while also didn’t feel loose. It was a comfy fit. I’m looking forward to getting these out on the course to test the waterproof claims, but also to see if they are breathable. If there’s no breathability and my feet are just as wet as the Atlantic Ocean, I may have to figure out why my feet sweat with golf shoes but not others. Final Review 08JUN2024 Amassing 19 rounds of swinging sticks, losing balls, almost a lost wedge, and a bruised ego, the following is my honest review of the SQAIRZ VELO golf shoe. I will be adding some pics used in other posts, while adding a few more that have been taken in the past week or so as I got to hone in on my testing. I finished the last round on June 7th and got to work on my final touches and doing media to help aid everyone in understanding what I am conveying. First Impressions (7 out of 10) The reason I am giving this a lower score is simply due to the fact I didn’t receive the color of shoes I had requested first and had to go about getting the shoes I requested from @Indy_Oz as I had gotten the shoes he requested. I guess you could say that subtracting 3 is more for the fact that extra work had to be done on our end to get our shoes, but more for the “First Impression/Unboxing can be found for more information in this post up above. What I can say is slipping them on and taking a stroll with them shortly after receiving them, I felt that new shoe feel. By no means is that bad, I like the new shoe feel. I’m not sure I know of anyone who doesn’t. The shoes felt like I was wearing my FJ Superlites, but was a noticeable difference when I put my Nike Roche G shoes on to test the differences. Where I slipped more with my Nike’s, I didn’t with my SQAIRZ VELO. Aesthetics (8 out of 10) Being in an area that is coastal and gets pretty decent amounts of rain in the spring time, I was almost scared to request mostly white shoes. The more I wore them the more I found the ease of cleaning them was. My wife gave me a good ribbing as she at first called me out for always coming home dirty after a round, that went away after the first round. I have to be honest, though, as I am still not used to a square toe on golf shoes, and the only square toe shoes I have ever owner were a pair of dress shoes when I was in high school 20 plus years ago. I can’t say it’s gotten easier to digest that fact. If they were regular sneakers I’d probably pass on wearing them anywhere other than when I was going on a run before work. I say that as I would wear them, but not as an everyday shoe. As a golf shoe yes, they are perfect. I do like the way the blue on the sides isn’t distracting. If it were one solid color I would have said it would be gaudy looking, but that is my opinion. First both are dirty with my pup Avalon. The second is the left shoe wiped off and looks like new. Where the deduction in points come from is from the laces themselves. The little rubber pieces on them for the Sta-Put Lacing System started coming off. I wouldn’t expect those to have come off in roughly a 2 month timeframe of using these shoes. This makes the laces look a tad, weird (I don’t know if that is the correct word to use). It has not made the laces come undone, but the laces on my other shoes don’t come undone or loose due to tightly tying my shoes. That’s probably due to the Navy teaching us to tie all our laces tightly on why the rubber pieces came off and why my shoes don’t come untied. Fit and Comfort (17 out of 20) This may be a me issue, and while I have custom orthotics for my running shoes and my work boots, I don’t wear any in my golf shoes. Why? It’s because I’ve never needed them for my golf shoes. I never had any problems walking 9 or 18 with not using the orthotics in my golf shoes. There was no issue walking 9 holes, but walking 18 I started getting some heel pain after hole 15. I walked 18 twice and decided that I would only walk 9 with the shoes until I could get a set of orthotics for these shoes. I’ve not had any heel pain with any of my other golf shoes walking 18, but admittedly I carried my bag and didn’t use a push cart. So this may have also played a role. Had to subtract a point for that though. The other two points that I took off were for the claims having breathability. Only one time while playing did my feet not sweat. Maybe my feet just always sweat in golf shoes. And maybe I should not be as harsh for that. Thing is my Roshe G shoes, while my feet sweat, it wasn’t until the back 9 when I noticed that, and the same for my FJ Superlites waterproof shoes. With the SQAIRZ VELO shoes I felt the sweatiness around holes 6 and 7. Did that make me have any worse of a round, absolutely not. Contrary to that thought, I had my best 9 hole rounds with them while walking. So is that really a terrible reason to drop anymore points? I don’t think so. On-Course (17.1 out of 20) The great part about the SQARIZ VELO was that while out on the course in super wet conditions, my feet stayed put and didn’t slip. Almost all of the golf shoes I’ve owned I’ve slipped on the course while swinging. The SQAIRZ didn’t let me slip though. I played when the courses were 90 degree if using a golf cart, when it was cart path only, and when it’s scatter. I loved walking when it was cart path only because I could just walk to my ball and had all my clubs with me. This gave me confidence in knowing that the bottoms weren’t going to get gunked up to the point I was feeling like I was going to be on a slip and slide, which I can attribute to their “Smart-Traction” System Where I am deduction 2.9 points from are the claims of the 2.9 average swing speed increase. I can honestly say there was no increase in swing speed based on going and swinging and testing on a trackman inside after finding that on the course my normal area of my drives on all my driver holes were in the same spot as before. I tried using a different ball, I tried to swing out of my shoes, and I tried swinging smoothly. Every single time I was in the same spot as my Roshe G and FJ Superlites. I can’t say that it is debunked or not for that, but for me it's a negative. The other claims of tighter dispersion I will speak to. I was known as an equal opportunity miss hitter. Balls would be left, right and center and not always a known when that was going to come in to play. What I did start noticing while wearing the SQAIRZ Velo for me, that right miss was pulled more closer to the fairway than the rough while not really moving my left mis into the fairway itself. I have no idea why, but I would rather miss left than right. So for tighter dispersion, I will say that is true. Good, Bad, In-between…..(18 out of 20) The Good: The “Smart-Traction” system has been a benefit I never thought I would have with a golf shoe. Then also the dispersion coming closer for me was great to see as well. Level up my game for that. The Bad: Like I had mentioned, the rubber pieces coming off the laces so soon should not have happened. Definitely something that may need more work to perfect, but I am unsure how to make them any better. The In-between: I’m going to say that while I still subtract 2.9 for the on-course portion for the 2.9 mph swing speed increase on average, I think putting a specific number on it at this time might need to be held off. Play it or Trade It? (19 out of 20) I will most definitely continue to play wearing these shoes. While the items listed are minor inconvenience, If it’s 95 degrees outside and dry, I may have to use my Roshe G’s so my feet aren’t soaked by the end of the round. When it is a wet soppy mess, these will definitely be on my feet. Conclusion Doing the little research about SQAIRZ before applying to be a tester, I thought the company had made claims that just pandered to golfers just to sell shoes. After testing, I can say that most of the claims have some for of truth to back up their claims. SQAIRZ as a company has gained a new fan. Final Score 86.1 out of 100 SQAIRZ has made me a fan of their shoes. While I think there are areas that can be improved upon, I want to get a pair of their other shoes just to have more SQAIRZ Shoes. If anyone is looking for a comfortable, won't let you slip, and waterproof shoe I would be more than happy to recommend the SQAIRZ VELO for you. Pictures incoming as soon as I upload them from my phone cause putting them on here from my mac is turning them upside down. Popular Post Indy_Oz
Introduction I am an Brit ex-pat professional engineer living in Central Indiana. After a golfing hiatus from ~2002-2022 the golf bug well and truly bit. Pre-‘02 I was playing to an approx 5 handicap, which is my target for this year (currently a 7.1HCP). I play a variety of public courses around the greater Indianapolis area (not a member anywhere right now) but most regularly at my local 9-hole muni, where I’ll be starting weekly league golf soon. I am a member of an indoor golf training center with sims and indoor putting area. Shoe stuff and test plan: Feet: I’m typically a size 12 to 12.5 depending on brand. I will be comparing the Sqairz to my current shoes: Ecco Biom C4 Gore-Tex & Adidas CodeChaos ’22 (MGS 2023 winner I believe). I will use these two shoes to compare for: Style/ appearance Fabric/ materials Fit Comfort Grip Performance in varying weather (rain, heat, cold etc) Wear rate (initially at least) Design claims Indoor sim: I will use a few sim sessions switching shoes mid-session to see if I gain any real speed in line with Sqairz’ claims. Outdoors: The shoes will be used both at practice/ range (1-2x per week, inc chipping and putting practice) and on-course. I will be walking my local 9-hole muni 1-2x/week as well as some 18-hole full rounds. I am quite picky when it comes to footwear. When I settled on Ecco last spring, I must have ordered and returned 7 or 8 different pairs of shoes from a number of manufacturers, as well as trying on countless pairs at Golf Galaxy and PGASS stores. I tend to be pretty brand loyal once I find something that works (I’ve stuck with Altra runners for ~7 years). Neither Ecco nor Adidas shoes are perfect for me (the latter have impressed so far though), so the spot in my bag (or on my feet) is open to challengers. This will be the first time I've even tried on Sqairz shoes. First Impressions (10/10): After a wee delay, testing is back on track after the shoes were received yesterday. The shoes were packaged well and came with a free pair of Sqairz branded socks and a personalized note from the owner, which is a nice touch. The Velo shoes are aimed at “Pro Performance & Power Hitters”, with the following features: - “Sta-Put lacing system has printed silicone on the top of the lace to lock in comfort and performance without ever having to tie the laces again throughout the round.” - I’ll see how long the little silicone nodules “sta-put” through use. - “Breathable textured tongue and collar lining forms to your foot for unrivaled comfort and airflow.”- it’s starting to warm up here in the Mid-West, so breathability will definitely be tested and welcomed! - “Heel stabilizer that runs from the heel to the arch for integrated arch support.”- stability and arch support are important factors for me, so I hope this will prove to be true. - “Dual-density compression foam footbed provides immediate step-in comfort.”- sounds good to me. - “New lightweight responsive NRG-Foam midsole delivers optimal comfort and increases energy return.”- this is the big claim most people will be interested in. This will be tested on the sim, where I can get some real data! - “Breathable textured tongue and collar lining forms to your foot for unraveled comfort and airflow.”- Sounds a bit like memory foam. We’ll see how the comfort levels last through use. Aesthetics (10/10): The shoes are a very smart modern style. I really like the design and feel of the materials used- these shoes even passed the spouse check! I just hope they last well. I couldn't find any manufacturing defects and everything looks well put together. The sole features fairly aggressive tread patterns along with three soft spikes in each of the forefoot and heel/ aft foot areas. Midsole is a medium firmness foam. The heel has a hard cup in gloss black, which must be the stabilizer listed in the above features. There is a pull tab at the heel and it was interesting to see the shoe liner fabric wraps over the heel, thus avoiding a seam along the top of the heel. I wonder if this is more long-lasting than the average heel seam across the top. The outer material has a slightly velour type feel to it. Not shiny, but not all that soft and plush either. How much it marks up and how easy it is cleaned remains to be seen, but it has a real nice quality feel to it. Additionally, the areas with the fine white lines in the direction across the top of the foot cover firmer supporting panels rather than continued standard outer. These add to the mid foot structural stability. The removable insoles are pretty standard, with what appears to be shock-absorbing material in the heel and ball of the foot. According to a couple of web searches, my foot shape is close to a ‘Roman’ type. My foot is fairly wide and shoe toe box space is always a concern. The square toe section provides a little more space in front of my 2nd & 3rd toes than my more traditionally curved and tapered Ecco and Adidas. There is more forefoot width than the Ecco I used most of last year, which is a great positive and I had to go up a half size to gain the width/ space needed in the Adidas. I went to a local golf course to use the practice greens to get some chipping, bunker and putting practice in. I can’t swing full speed due to a muscular strain, but chipping and putting is fine. To be fair, those are the areas I most need to work on!lol The Velo seems very comfortable, with the thick cushioning around the heel box and a minimally thick (but comfortable enough) liner through the rest of the mid and forefoot). However, the shoe also seems structurally very supportive. I thought the midsole might feel too soft, but on a very limited first wear and test, they have a good balance of support and comfort. Sole grip seems very good, as expected with soft spikes and moderately aggressive moulded tread. The sole is sufficiently soft and pliable to make walking on hard-top and driving straightforward and comfortable. On sloping turf and sand the shoes felt stable and gripped well. All round positive first experience wearing them. Next: On-Course Testing… Edited April 21 by Indy_Oz First impressions added GregB135, Javs, Erin B and 8 others 8 3 Quote 2024 WITB: G430 LST 9* w. Popular Post billpierce
My name is Bill Pierce and like many readers here I have a golf addiction. I hear admitting this is the first step? Mind wanders… Golf trip to Ireland anyone? Let me start by saying, that I am excited for this review, as I already own a pair of almost 3 year old Sqairz with its “torque generation system’! Previously, I shared comments here on a golf shoe thread and one of the members wrote the square toe reminded him “I need to bring my blunderbuss along with me to the course” (hinting that it looked like a Pilgrim shoe?). Every time I lace them up I can hear his comment!!! I love the humor and sharing of opinions here at MyGolfSpy and as a long-time reader of reviews, many of the items in my bag (e.g. Ping 425 SFT fairway woods) come direct from reviews provided here and I want to return that favor back to our wonderful community! The BlunderBuss (My old pair of Sqairz) The shoes AFTER cleaning still hold turf…. A bit about me: I run technology for my company (nerd alert) and at 61 years old (geezer alert) and after elbow surgery for tennis elbow (from golf) and some pretty severe disc compression issues and arthritis in my back – let’s say I can’t swing or go at it as hard as I once could! Why did I share all of that? I hope to be a beacon reviewer for all the slightly hobbled oldies looking for a reviewer like themselves. Or if you like humor (see my jokes posts on the forum) I am your guy! Some background on my game: I started golf in my thirties and will say that my game has gone up and down over the last 15 years… with post-surgery some terrible rounds and scores making me almost want to quit golf. Recently shot 87 and for me and lately that is a good score --though I hover in that range if I don’t blow up a hole or two. Where is my weakness: I tend to give up most of my score on wedges (chunk them) and putting and if you look at my posts, you will see the quest for new wedges (I still can’t pick, but will watch the testing reviews closely) and putter This will be my first season using my new Sacks Parente Mallet, I remain hopeful that the three putts end. Some thoughts on the Shoe and how to test: I am not a shoe fanatic guy, but I do have four pairs currently. One of them as stated is a pair of Sqairz. Some thoughts on my legacy pair from this vendor: 1. My current Sqairz is a VERY stable shoe. You can absolutely feel the stability. 2. For those with wide feet, sqairz is worth a look. 3. I find the shoe comfortable but a bit hot when the temperatures sore, it will be nice to see if the new sqairz are more breathable. 4. Waterproof features work well (maybe why they are hot?) 5. They pick up a lot of turf, particularly on wet courses. It did annoy me at times as last year was so rainy. I was either using other shoes or constantly banging turf out of the cleats and tracks. 6. Regarding ‘speed’ pick up – I never tested them for that but will say if you are a good ground force player, I am sure you are bound to pick up 2-4mph. As my back is not like it once was, I will not push myself to those limits, it would probably cause downtime! 7. Aesthetics / Looks wise I think the Blunderbuss comment may be rude, but not far off These attributes will set a good baseline to compare! I play north of Boston Mass, southern Maine and Down East Maine areas so much cooler and more wet conditions compared to the North Carolina course that I previously played on (and often in rough condition due to winter damage/weather). I love to walk the courses if I can, as I don’t get enough physical stimulation from my desk job. So, that means both performance and comfort are critical to me in a shoe. Let’s list the areas I see critical for testing in a shoe: A. Comfort – is the shoe constricting around my toes? Support the arches but not hurt, is it breathable or will my feet make the inside feel like it rained in there! B. Traction – does the shoe prevent slippage, grip enough but not too much? C. Stability – how stable is my balance, weight transfer, torque? Does the foot roll in the shoe? D. Aesthetics – How sexy are the shoes? (guess my bias will come out here) I plan on testing three of my shoes side by side to observe differences: 1. My original sqairz to get a baseline of how the shoe line is improving and has some of my pet peeves been addressed! 2. My Puma spikeless because they are super comfy, but to be honest I think I lose torque so this will be a good performance test comparison. 3. The new sqairz and see how fit, stability, performance, aesthetics and all play out. One core component of testing will be using the GC Quad and putting the models to tests with different shots and scenarios… probably focus on three clubs – Driver, fairway wood and Wedge and see the distance impact for each shoe. If the weather cooperates (and we got a small amount of snow this week) I want to do a thorough test over a number of rounds and in different weather conditions (wet and dry but not snow!). These two series of test combined, should easily tell us about a number of factors like comfort, grip, stability, waterproofing and how they actually look and feel during normal use. Weather and course conditions permitting, I'll probably be walking 9-holes at my local 9-hole course that is very wet in places and undulating and should be a good test for the shoes. That said, I am working out my testing plan and have an ask to the community: can you all send me what numbers on the GCQuad you want to see? Ball Speed? Distance? AofA? < what tells us the shoe performs as claimed? I have a very open mind to the brand and will use my prior experience with the shoes factor in testing, but hopefully not too much bias. If the new shoes ace all of the testing criteria -- they will be keepers and become my number 1 shoe! In conclusion, you are on this journey with me, my humor should come through, and this will be fun. Now let’s start the testing! The unboxing and First Impressions: Final Review of 2024 Sqairz Velo Golf Shoes – 6/10/2024 Quick Recap: As I started this review, I was clear that I would best represent the older golfer with the slower swing speed (70 to 100mph) and middle handicap (currently going upward to 12.8). I also stated that I would validate the claims of the shoemaker by (1) not only comparing shoes across my personal line, but more importantly (2) compare across a legacy pair of sqairz to validate improvements over time from the manufacturer. Where would the data come from: I typically play a local public course that has some unique challenges course and condition-wise, as well as a “4 team league type play” where we rotate players on teams. This week, I got closest to the pin honors! Finally, I also said I would use the GC Quad to track my results for the indoor testing at the beginning of the review process and share the accuracy and speed data for those specific claims. Wet or Dry conditions the shoes performed exceptionally well for ground force contact and stability! Compare that to my Puma’s where my feet were drenched (and Muddy): My actual testing approach was to test three shoes – side by side: 1. My original sqairz to get a baseline of how the shoe line is improving (and if any of my pet peeves have been addressed) 2. My Puma spikeless because they are super comfortable, but to be honest I lose torque so this will be a good “performance test” comparison. 3. The new 2024 Sqairz Velo and see how fit, stability, performance, aesthetics and all play out. Getting the MGS testing started was a simple experience. Bob, the Sqairz founder, sent me the shoes (that I had selected) and we had a solid discussion about what I should expect from the shoes. Bob was sure I would experience good things from the shoe line, and he was thrilled I was already a sqairz customer. The company wants lifelong customers. The call was very informative, and I learned how to compare the strength, comfort, rigidity and think about the performance factors associated with golf shoes. Did you know the square toe is not only for comfort but to allow more ground force contact and that combined with the cleats and other design choices is what drives accuracy and speed? OK, what does this all mean? Let us get to the fun of grading the Velo shoe: First Impressions: 9 / 10 points Upon opening the box and feeling the shoes, my first thoughts were: I liked the black sleek look over my legacy white shoes. Also, the new shoe material was softer, and the shoe was also slightly lighter than my original pair of sqairz and only slightly heavier than the Puma spikeless shoes. New cleats much improved. 'Heat build up' of the shoes much improved. New materials much softer. Love the new styles and colors. I think Sqairz can still improve a bit on Aesthetics/looks but far improved over the legacy models. Fit was a bit stiff at first but broke in quickly. Shoe is stable as one expects from Sqairz and the waterproof features work flawlessly. I was initially curious of how my tests these critical areas that align with what the vendor claims as well as how we do testing within the MGS community. I will expand on each of these later but some impressions: A. Comfort – is the shoe constricting around my toes? Support the arches but not hurt, is it breathable or will my feet make the inside feel like it rained in there! Result: Shoes are more breathable than previous models, very waterproof still, and I had no blisters or sore spots on toe, tongue or heel. They also feel slightly less heavy than my old pair. The arch support was good, not overbearing. B. Ground Forces & Traction – does the shoe prevent slippage, grip enough but not too much? Result: The shoe, like its predecessor models, has amazing traction. For me -- as I like to spin my feet a little – I felt ‘too anchored’ to the ground if that is possible! The cleats picked up less turf than predecessor model, which was a nice surprise. Navigating the course, even in wet conditions the velo can go anywhere and work under any weather and turf conditions. C. Stability – how stable is my balance, weight transfer, torque? Does the foot roll in the shoe? Result: The Velo model retains the strength and durability of its predecessors, and I feel encourages a left biased swing for me (that should not have surprised me, but the data did). There is no slipping or rolling and as I got used to the torque, I enjoyed the stability. Energy transfer is very positive. D. Aesthetics – How sexy are the shoes? Result: This new Velo model is quite nice looking, and I received compliments from out on the course. My only pet peeve is the dirt does show on the black shoes, which I had hoped would not be the case. E. Accuracy & Speed - does the shoe deliver results in distance and accuracy? Result: My results showed minimal speed gain, maybe 1 to 1.5 MPH but a decent accuracy gain of 1% -6% depending on the club chosen. Aesthetics: 8 / 10 points The square toe may put off some folks, but understand it is to increase ground forces and the natural spread of the toes for stability. My new black pair was much sexier than the old legacy white and it has a very modern sleek look over perhaps a more traditional golf shoe. (for example, my footjoys are more traditional). The lacings work well to keep the shoe snug but not overbearingly tight. The waterproof features remind me of footjoy and worked perfect. Traction on wet or dry worked flawlessly with no slippage. If I were to nitpick, the shoes still pick up turf at times. Main impressions: With the general trend in golf shoes leaning more toward streamlined and almost running shoe type athletic (like my Puma shoes), the more bulky, square toe look of the Sqairz shoes may be enough to visually make some players pause (my blunder-buss comment from my initial report). That said, the new shoe looks sleeker, the colors are improving, and the material selections and new cleats all improve the shoe from the legacy line. I like the laces but wonder if some of the other locking solutions may be just as effective and have better quality attributes regarding longevity and look a bit cleaner. Fit & Comfort (19 out of 20) I ordered the shoes in my normal size, and they fit perfectly. The heel and tongue were comfortable and lasted as I walked numerous holes and stress tested them. Those with wide feet will learn to enjoy the extra room in the toe box. The laces did stay put and I always felt stable and comfortable, except in high heat walking 18. I wore them in the rain, in the mud, in the heat, and never had any issues with blisters that often accompany breaking in a new pair of shoes. The shoes are structured to not twist, so I did expect that stiffness to cause discomfort, but that was not my experience. All in all – the Velo is a nice upgrade over both my legacy Sqairz and the Puma shoes. Well, I managed to inadvertently do a thorough test of waterproofing by stepping into a muddy creek. The shoe itself had no trouble keeping my foot dry. Waterproof, Check! My single point deduction is for breathability. The Velo is more breathable than my older pair, so it is improved. They are not lacking there to the point of feeling uncomfortable, but I did notice heat build up on warmer days. I may try the Speed model or a pair offering more ventilation! On-Course Performance: 20 / 20 points The shoes are confidence building. Traction wise, they are at least as good as any of my other shoe options, and certainly better than the spikeless shoe I had been wearing as my go-to for a while. I will admit, when you read the Sqairz claim of increased stability, it is something you have to feel for yourself to finally believe it. It is hard to describe, but they do feel more stable especially stepping up to take a shot. The claim of adding 12 yards, I am probably not the correct tester for that. As I suggested in my thread post, as a mid-handicap player, I am probably not generating consistent enough swing speeds anyway to truly verify that concept. Traction and stability were flawless, and it took me a but of getting used to not spinning my feet on full shots. I particularly like to spin my back foot and tend to overspin at times. The Good, The Bad and the In-between: 19 / 20 points The great – I increased my accuracy! I think the combination of wider clears, toe box and cleat positions make a difference for sure and gaining over 5% accuracy is a score! The Good – the shoes were stable, comfortable, performed in all weather conditions, and generate confidence. The fit, laces, stability, comfort, weather performance all make a great all-around shoe. The Bad – nothing really, but to nitpick – the square toe is a different look, the heat is still noticed on hot days, the cleats mildly pick up turf. Play it or Trade it? 20 / 20 points The largest surprise for me was the improvement in ball flight consistency / dispersion. While I may not be hitting my driver longer with these (perhaps 1-3 yards), strokes gained are still strokes gained and I will take it. If my putting didn’t abandon me the last few rounds, I had noticed an improved handicap and scores down (unfortunately my putter is failing me lately). These are my gamers and have been all season so far! I may try a pair that builds up less heat like the speed model. So yes, I am considering ordering a second pair, even though the price tag is a bit higher will wait for a sale the speed line / mesh line. If anything, I may wait a bit to see if new colors emerge in the mesh editions. I would love to see a traditional golf shoe like the footjoy traditions line. Final Score: 95 /100 Conclusion: A lot of claims regarding these shoes, simply put – what should I know and what is true? (Putting the claims to test from the Sqairz designers) The VELO's hallmark is its unparalleled speed-rated design, a pioneering innovation exclusively developed by SQAIRZ. At the core of the design is the SQAIRZ NRG-Direct™ film. The proprietary SQAIRZ NRG-Direct™ technology reduces energy loss in the high-stress lateral side of the shoe and redirects that power upwards. This film provides weightless lateral and rotational support resulting in an average increase of 12 yards of distance and tighter dispersion. It is not just a shoe; it is a performance accelerator, designed to optimize energy exchange. Unique to SQAIRZ shoes is the patented SQAIRZ toe box, a feature present in every pair, including the new VELO. An innovative design meticulously built for optimal performance and foot biomechanics, this feature is engineered to provide an expansive area for toe spread, crucial for achieving a foundational base and balance during the golf swing. By aligning with the foot's natural mechanics, the patented toe box directly translates to improved balance, stability, and power transfer throughout the swing, showcasing SQAIRZ's commitment to fusing advanced biomechanical insights with performance-enhancing footwear technology. The patented toe box is not merely a comfort feature; it is a critical component for athletes seeking to optimize their performance metrics on the golf course, ensuring that every movement is supported by scientifically backed design principles. Verdict: Mostly True! Let’s dig a layer deeper: Ultimate Stability - AI-generated Smart Hybrid Traction system with over 290 points of ground contact. Arch support and shoe stability is second to none. No slipping or sliding in your shoe, no matter the lie. Verdict: True! So stable, that I actually developed a left shot bias that I had to adjust for, and no slippage was experienced under any turf conditions – wet or dry. I will say, the shoe generates a lot of confidence, and the energy transfer is something we all need from our golf shoes. Cleat positions matter! Greater Distance and accuracy - Testing the shoes against competitors shows increased distance of 12 to 16 yards. Distance Verdict - Partially True, I was longer by 3 yards. Hit longer, more accurately, and more consistently. This elevated security is thanks to VELO’s LaceLock™ system, which bolsters the staying power of SQAIRZ’s much-loved patented Sta-Put laces. I love the laces, but some testers experienced longevity issues with the nubs on the laces that make them stay put. Testing also found that VELO can tighten dispersion by 30% and add up to 12 yards of distance. Verdict: Mostly True! I experienced more shot accuracy across the club lines tested from Driver to wedge, ranging from 1-2% more accurate to 6-7% more accurate! Sounds small, but this is a big deal. I did not see a longer distance impact that I felt was consistently measurable, but I have slower swing speeds – so your mileage may vary. All-Day Comfort- Lightweight microfiber with engineered collar padding and NRG Foam midsoles. Walk 18 with no blisters or sweat. Verdict: Mostly True! I experienced zero blisters and after about 2 rounds of break in, really enjoyed the shoe comfort. On hot 80-degree days, I could still say my feet were warm inside the shoe. I may test one of the other shoes that offer more ventilation. So ---this is a lot of data and a lot of claims. Simplify it for me, Bill --- “What does Sqairz offer that your current shoe may be lacking?” For me it was accuracy, plain and simple. I would never have guessed a shoe can help that much, but to get much smaller shot dispersion and really eliminate slices – that is saying something!! If you are a younger, faster swing golfer, I suspect distance gains are in your future as well. Accuract Test of Puma Spikeless versus Sqairz Velo with driver: I said I would compare the shoes and was really interested to test the stability claims of sqairz AND see if it translates to results. The driver is my worst club in the bag, and I tend to spray it a bit (something for me to work on). Early in the season, the results will be a bit worse - but here are the results! Sqairz Velo shoe and driving performance - what is immediately noticed is my left of green bias and it was surprising to me. Is it a swing flaw that I need to work on? Maybe. I think it is actually the stability of the shoe, and a little more torque causing a different shot shape for me -> in some cases a sever hook! The Puma Spikeless and driving performance - you see a more normal distribution (sorry math guy here) and that data matches my normal spray patterns. I could feel the ability to move my feet (not like Scottie) and although comfortable it does seem to cause less accuracy. Results: Sqairz is more accurate to the range of 6-9%, left biased a good 10% more (and this is with me trying to correct path and stance). My first 30 hits were a whopping 80% left biased! All in All -- I was impressed with this new pair of Sqairz Velo, and it makes me want to test the Speed and other lines as well. As we all strive to improve our game, any advantage we can get, should be explored with vigor. These shoes, I will state from my testing, mostly lived up to their aggressive claims. Willie T
5 hours ago, GolfSpy_APH said: Can shoes make a real impact on a golfer's ability to swing faster and increase their swing speed? Please welcome and congratulate our testers! @funkyjudge @Wheelieb @billpierce @Indy_Oz Alrighty dighty - congrats to the testers.
