Long Socks and shorts on course

Recommended Posts

My 22 year old son sports that look. usually black Nike crew socks. However that is not for me. I wear ankle length short socks with shorts. Unless a doctor tells me that I need to wear compression socks I’m sticking with ankle length. I’m not a fan of no show socks either. They seem to always slide down into the shoe or part of the shoe that extends past the sock line rubs my skin. That’s a bad thing. Blisters are not welcome.

I’m big on “to each their own”, whatever is comfortable for that person is fine in my book. For me it’s no show socks with shorts.

I seriously considered showing up to the round at Royal New Kent wearing shorts and my argyle knee high compression socks, but figured they might kick me off the course. I fortunately found some shorter compressions that I'll be wearing during the trip since the reason I wear them is my ankle.

As far as the OP's original question, I have no problem with anyone wearing long socks if that's what they like. I think the most important thing is they have a respect for the course and the game.

I don't care what socks people wear, I wear no shows when I play.

As someone who has bee suggested to wear full length compressions sock or sleeves its best that I do wear them. I like to avoid it as I do not love wearing them but I am sure it will happen more and more in the future.

I personally don't care what socks someone wears as long as they are being respectful of the course and play.

If you’re there to pickup women, this probably isn’t the look. Most likely going to leave you with some wicked tan lines too. However, if it is within the confines of what the club allows, fair game. Confidence is key, and if wearing high socks helps, more power to ya.

It's not the look for me, but to each their own. It doesn't affect my game.

Personal preference is that if you are going to wear socks over your calf or even up to the kneed, don't wear knee length shorts.

My wife wanted me to do the full Payne Stewart type outfit for Royal New Kent until she looked at the price of that stuff.

Fashion comes and goes, and I mostly ignore it. I've been using 4-5" socks (ankle or slightly higher) for as long as I can remember, but current fashion (not neccesarily golf fashion) is for higher, 8-10" socks. I think it's coming from other sports, running, cycling, triathlon, where higher socks have been proven to have a measurable aerodynamic advantage. Once the look is normalized for athletes, it trickles down to mainstream.

Personally I don’t think it’s a good look but each

to their own. If someone wants to wear them, and the course allows it, then I don’t see a problem

I have no opinion on what someone else choses to wear, just like I don't care what type of bag they have, what clubs they hit, etc.

All that concerns me about other folks on the course is whether or not they're being respectful to others and to the course. That's it.

I definitely know some "sneakerheads" that would have sock designs to match their golf shoes if they played. That being said, I've always been a low/ankle cut sock guy myself so it wouldn't bug me either way.

I don’t really care. If I’m playing an early morning round I tend to wear whatever socks I wore the day before. They could be long or short or various colors. Shorts tend to be whatever is on top of the pile and then I just pick a shirt. The wife usually has a good laugh when I get home. Far be it for me to criticize someone else’s clothing choices.

"NOTE: Men should wear knee-length or sports socks with tailored shorts."

This is part of the dress code for Ballybunion in Ireland, I have no idea what golf course thinks this is a good look for golfers. As I will be playing there in June among other courses, I needed to make sure I check out all the dress codes on every course there.

I agree with @Tom the Golf Nut, the crew socks aren't for me.  I used to wear ankle socks, with many of the new style shoes, the ankle socks slide down the back of the heel.  So I started wearing the low-cut/ 1/4 socks and love them. Although, the tan line is now much higher, LOL.

99% of the time I wear white socks, but I do like black 1/4 socks with shorts.

I see it here in Key West.  Not because it's a fashion statement, but it's a way of dealing with the heat and sun.  The longer socks tend to protect the legs from unwanted UV and having to make too many trips to the dermatologist!

The one and only time I played golf in Australia, long socks were required if you were wearing shorts.  I mean over-the-calf socks, not crew length.  Over-the-calf socks are comon business wear in Bermuda, coupled with taylored shorts, a sportcoat, shirt and tie.  For me, I prefer the really short ones, but I don't care what anyone else wears.
