Intro

Alright everyone, I’m back and pumped for another shaft test! (although hopefully this one doesn’t add as much distance as the last one ). I was hesitant to sign up for this because it’s late in the season here in Madison, WI, and it’s stat-heavy (wasn’t sure if I would have access to the right equipment), but after some post-selection discussion and research, we are good to go. Also, the LAB team has been absolutely on top of things, so where I expected almost this entire test to be indoors (thinking production would be 4 weeks or so), the putter is already on it’s way here – now need to contact my SAM guy and schedule something a lot earlier than we expected.

Now, if you’ve read my last reviews / followed my other posts, you might know a lot of this already – but I’m a former semi-competitive golfer (mid-range D-III golf team in the early-mid 00s, now pick my tournaments based on the course rather than the competition), and I can still kinda hold my own from time to time. My handicap is up to a 3.8 this year from my all-time low of 1.5 in 2023, but when it comes to putting…

Various sites say that, for my handicap, I should average around 32 putts/round – but I often have 35+. Maybe proximity is also a factor – lots of greens + lots of 2-putts = lots of pars. In the few rounds where I end up sub-30 putting, they’re usually pretty close to +hcp rounds. With those putting struggles come quite a few putter changes (you know, “to change up the feel”), so I have a big stockpile of putters in my basement.

Two factors in this test: LAB, and the TPT shaft.

• LAB: My first go with LAB was just to give it a shot, so I bought a putter “cheap” (relative to a direct order) off of the LAB outlet – picked specs that looked close enough with the Mezz XL, and when it showed up, it was brand new (my theory is it was a cancelled custom order or a proto or something). It performed better than what I was using, but I like the look of a blade, so when it became available, I picked up a Link.1 (to be honest, I’m bitter that I didn’t pull the trigger on the initial Link limited release, but I picked one up as soon as they stocked the now-standard edition) – the Link is what I’m using for the test.
• Premium Shaft: I have very limited experience with premium shafts. I’ve wanted to try something, but found it hard to justify the cost – can it really be that good? The closest I’ve tried is a Fujikura (thanks to @dlow206) popped into a Toulon Madison head that I bought (specifically for the Madison capitol image); I almost pulled the trigger on a BGT Masters edition shaft a couple years in a row, but decided against it; and then there’s the Accra, which I believe was a premium upcharge (albeit a relatively small one compared to TPT/others). I’m actually really excited to do a legit side-by-side putter shaft test to see if it truly makes a difference.

OK OK, so the details of the test: I submitted my fitting video to LAB, and they confirmed the specs on my Link.1 are appropriate – 34.5” length, 69 degree lie, so the two putters will be identical aside from the shaft. I’m a bit jealous of some of the other testers, because they get to pick a different color for their test putter (which also helps differentiate in the test pics/videos), but the Link only has the one color (technically they did release a black version at one point, but I expect it’s the standard color that’s showing up). Now, once the putter gets here, I’m planning the following: some on-course play (didn’t expect this, but they built/shipped it fast enough for it to work), lots of sessions on my BirdieBall and PuttOut AirBreak (an excuse to practice more this off-season!), and a couple sessions on SAM to collect some stats (which…will likely also include a lesson – also a great excuse to try to get better!).

First Impression (9.75/10)

Had hopes of getting the putter on Saturday, but based on FedEx tracking info, it took a bit of a joyride through the backroads of the northern US and showed up two days later than original estimates (scans imply it was cruising down US-2 instead of the Interstates, and likely cruised right past my house yesterday before heading to Chicago and back). 

As for the actual putter when it arrived -- per usual, the LAB team packed it very securely, so no risk of damage in any way. The putter overall looks awesome. Some quick compare/contrast to the benchmark Accra putter: 

• Head actually looks slightly darker -- I'm guessing that's just the age and nothing more than that. 
• "Accidentally" got the same alignment markings -- picked the new putter's markings while at work, not looking at the older putter. Picked what I thought would work best for me, thinking I was adding a line compared to the one I already had. But...nope, I guess I have a subconscious preference, because I blindly picked the exact same markings. 
• Love the look of the shaft -- great color, cool subtle pattern. I'm actually surprised how much I prefer the look of this one to the straight white Accra (back when I ordered that one, I was all-in on white, but 5 minutes into this test, I think that was a mistake). 
• The build is slightly different, I'm guessing within a certain margin of error. Side-by-side, the lie seems identical, but the length is very slightly different (like 1/8" or less -- the Accra comes up to the bottom of the grip cap of the TPT). 
• The TPT feels slightly heavier -- but I don't have a great way to confirm. From putting it on a flat scale at a few different angles, my guess is that the TPT Link is 10g heavier. 
• The grip -- it's the same. But also different. Looks like LAB went from the standard Garsen to a LAB-branded version with a Black/White/Blue color scheme. The blue/white is a pretty close match to my High School team colors, which is cool (but also, a thing of the wayyy past). 

So...why dock it 0.25 points? Well there's the build difference, which is minor. But my petty reason is that I think a different color head would look better with this grip/shaft combo (black, blue, or darker gray, maybe gunmetal) -- now, I knew that wasn't an option with the Link, but maybe something LAB could explore in the future?

Oh, and first putts with it...lights out. Only flat-ish 4-5 footers on the BirdieBall, but all dead center. The Accra also gave me two dead center putts, so we will see...

First Impression

Hi LAB fans

First off, big thanks to TPT, LAB Golf and MGS for this amazing opportunity.

I’m a 51-year-old golfer on Phillip Island, a small island off the coast of a big island (Australia), and I'm one of the lucky testers of the TPT shafts. This is a picture of me with my two daughters. 

I've wanted to try a TPT for a long time, so this is a dream review for me. My first LAB was a steel shaft, my current is a custom DF3 armlock with Accra. I've had great experiences with LAB since I moved to the dark side, or the should I say lie angle balanced side. I came second in club Champs with my first LAB last November and won monthly medal in February.

My other hobbies are kitesurfing, surfing, and photography, and I play drums (due to my lack of vocal talents) with my family, who all play musical instruments. I also volunteer for the Emergency Services. Outside of main cities in Australia, volunteer emergency services do storm repair, steep inclined and road crash rescue.

My gear - what's in the bag

• Titleist GT 10 Degree and 3.5 Fairway Wood

I'm using Callaway Chrome Soft Triple Track 360 balls as I like the triple track alignment with the LAB DF3 SS alignment configuration. 

My golf

I’m currently an 8 handicap, shooting occasional sub-80s, which should improve as we go into summer. I got back into golf three years back when I moved to Phillip Island and had a beautiful course on my doorstep. From a putting perspective, I have been improving over the last 12 months, both in part due to the LAB and taking on Aimpoint to help with reading breaks. I'm currently running between 28-32 putts a round. Today I had 29 putts when I shot a 76.

I’m a little like Bryson DeChambeau, minus any skill, talent or strength. I’m a golf nerd, which is what got me looking at the LAB putters. I liked what they were trying to achieve and how they were challenging the way other manufacturers were thinking.

My course

Our local course is Philip Island Golf Course, an 18-hole par 72 holiday destination course less than a mile from my house.  Wildlife on our courses is amazing, with plenty of birdlife, wallabies, snakes, and cottontail bunnies. Wallabies are really small equivalents of Kangaroos. 

My tests /Questions

Some of the questions I'd like to answer as part of the test:

1. How does the weight of the putter compare to Accra?
2. Does the TPT feel noticeably different to the Accra, and if so, in what way?
3. Does the TPT improve accuracy over the Accra for the average non-professional golfer?
4. How does the quality compare between Accra and TPT?
5. Is the TPT shaft worth the $ premium?

What I'll be testing

I’ll be testing a LAB DF3 Armlock with a 5-degree loft against my DF3 with an Accra shaft. I decided to try a blue DF3 head with the TPT to see the difference.

TPT Shaft x LAB Golf Testing

Hey Spies!

I first want to extend my gratitude to the MGS Team/Staff for choosing me to be apart of this amazing testing.

My name is Connor and I live out of Toronto, Ontario. I work in the post production industry doing music and sound design for commercials and other various projects. When I’m not occupied by work I spend time working on my own music projects, spending time with my girlfriend/lil chihuahua named Olive and of course GOLFING!!!

I started Golfing when I was around 9 years old. I sparked an interest in it and my grandpa made no hesitation to get me started with the game. On weekends we would play par 3 courses - the only thing I could handle at the time and I instantly fell in love. I then played a few years of junior golf and when high school came around I slowly fell off with the game. It wasn’t until COVID came around and instantly fell back in love.

I now play on the GTAAMTour (an Amateur Golf Tour here in Ontario, Canada). As my first year on tour I’ve done well with 3 top 10 finishes out of 5 tournaments including a 3rd place finish and with the Tour Championship around the corner I feel like my game is in a good place!

I am currently a 9.4 handicap. My two goals for this season were to get to a single digit handicap and to break 80. Well, I managed to do both! I would say my game is trending in the right way and putting is definitely one of my strengths - Another reason I am extremely excited to be apart of this testing.

A brief history of my Putters:

I have been an Odyssey Guy my entire golf career.

From my first ever putter being the Odyssey Crimson Series 550, then upgrading to a newer model - Odyssey White Hot Pro Rossie, then finding an Odyssey Versa Jailbird on FB Marketplace, to finally making the switch over to the LAB MEZZ.1 MAX!

My current LAB Putter is just the stock MEZZ.1 MAX.

For this testing I plan on putting non-stop. I have a variety of putting training aids and tools that will be put the test - Gates, Mirrors and the Devil Ball to name a few. I have access to many different turfs and greens so It will be nice to see the difference between these putters/shafts in different conditions. As an ongoing data collection, I think it will be fun and informative to knock out 25 putts each per day and at the end of the testing give a total tally of putts made vs missed. Of course I will track other parameters and do other comparisons, but I think what most people want to know is if the ball goes in the hole more… Also, please let me know if there’s anything you’re curious about and I will get answers to you as best as I can. Of course I will be tracking various putts - long, short, uphill, downhill, big breaks and straight putts.

I find my currently LAB is great at keeping the ball on line, but I struggle with speed and control. I hope the TPT shaft can help me with that and it seems that’s what it promotes. I have really high expectations for this putter as the shaft doesn’t not come with a cheap price tag. From seeing all the tour players using LAB Putters there is always one thing in common and it’s that they’re using the TPT Shafts. That definitely tells you something and I definitely have high expectations. I am extremely excited to get rolling with this testing!

 

First Impression (10/10)

 

Well, this beautiful box arrived on my doorstep and I felt like a kid on Christmas Morning…

I just want to quickly shoutout the TPT and LAB Golf Team. They are extremely helpful and amazing to work with.

Sticking with the Christmas theme I think this putter deserves the name Candy. As soon as I unboxed it, it instantly reminded me of a candy cane…

We were fortunate enough to customize our putter and I went with the red colour and 3 line sightline. This putter is absolutely gorgeous. Okay, enough about the putter let’s talk about the main item being tested.

I didn’t think it was possible for a shaft to look so good. The texture/look of the shaft is almost like a swirly camo carbon fibre? It looks AMAZING. I also love the sleek look of the logo and writing.

Right after I unboxed it I zipped over to the local training academy and I had 3 people ask me about the putter and shaft… It was nice to give MyGolfSpy a shoutout and I encouraged them to join!

Straightaway I noticed a difference with the shaft. The best way to describe it is when I first tried a stiff driver shaft and had way more control. I can’t tell if the TPT Shaft is stiffer but there’s something way different to it and I like it. My first 3 putts had great dispersion.

For those of you who haven’t tried a LAB Putter there is a smooth feeling unlike any putter stroke you’ve had before - It’s kind of hard to explain, but those who know, know. With the TPT Shaft I experienced that again. My putting stroke felt amazing and it almost felt like the putter was doing all the work for me and all I had to do was move my shoulders. It feels like a supercharged LAB. I look forward to exploring more!

Hello MGS Community,

Let me start by introducing myself and my golf game.  I am a 40-something-high handicapper currently residing on the East Coast – The Springfield, MA/Hartford, CT Area.  After considerable work this summer I have been able to find some good improvements to my game primarily due to some of the great insights and advice I have seen on this forum but also thanks to working on both my Driving game and ball striking.  My day job is in higher education administration, so I spend too much time in an office and not enough time in the sun, but I have been able to get in a lot of golf during this season as I was able to convince my wife that walking nine holes was more exercise then just regular walking, which has helped in my quest to break 100 (My rounds currently are hovering between 100 and 103 consistently which is down from 120 at the start of summer). I have been trying to keep up my short game with the improvements I have made to my long game this year and am excited to see how the Cadillac of LAB putters can help me turn up my progress in improving my short game.  Plus, with this putter in my bag, I am hoping my daughter won't laugh at me anymore and will stop telling me she is a better putter than me when she comes along on the course with me. 

I first started experimenting with lab putters after a club champion putter fitting.  I was blown away by the DF3 despite its non-traditional looks.  The performance finally won me out and after flirting with and almost buying one at a PGA superstore but passing it up for a mini-jailbird due to my long-standing love of Odessey putters after a few weeks of too many three putts with that I found myself on the lab outlet website staring at a df3 that matched my spec form the initial fitting I did at club champion and somehow my credit card just flew out of my pocket and the next thing I knew my DF3 was on its way via FedEx.  Over the last couple of months, my df3 put in enough work that my white pistol grip turned let's go with significantly off-white and I ended up replacing it with a new superstoke grip, so I will be replacing my current grip with the new black press pistol to be on an equal footing with my test putter.  I think my game and this test will be a good example of the effectiveness of lab for high handicappers looking to find some help in finding consistency and control in their short game and ways to chase away the looming monster known as the three put. 

Having jumped both feet into a stock steel shaft DF3 and being an avid reader of the Lab forums on Facebook what is exciting to me about this test is seeing how the data comes out regarding short-game improvement when comparing my stock steel shaft to the TPT shaft.  I read only great things about the TPT shaft online, so I am looking forward to seeing how it performs especially for a less highly skilled golfer like me.  I will be doing a couple of SAM put lab sessions with a local pro to get a baseline and final numbers on both putters but also have some long-term testing plans to examine both distance control and line distribution as well as overall consistency.  I am hoping the weather here in New England holds enough for at least a couple of weeks of outdoor testing but have also secured a big moss putting green for the basement to keep up both testing and my short game practice for the cold winter months (Here’s to hoping I banish three putts from my score card by spring). I know the putter on the left is not a lab but it's gone through three brothers in my generation, my older brother's kids, is now my daughter's gamer and if my little brother ever gets the job done I am sure at least one more little golfer will get a chance with it.  My munchkin has been helping me formulate my testing set-ups while we wait for the TPT shaft putter to come in

Having used a df3 now for a while I know and love lab products, I also know how rabid the lab putter fan base is and I only hope I can do fellow lab lovers justice in my testing and try to help answer the question as to whether the TPT shaft lives up to the praise it gets as a great base to build a solid short game.  In the end, keeping this putter in the bag is pretty simple - does the TPT shaft outperform my stock steel shaft in terms of distance control, made putts, and staying online through my stroke.  If it is more consistent with putt distance, puts more balls (especially outside of 6 feet) in the hole, and helps the ball keep the line better not only will it stay in the bag, but you will have to pry it out of my cold dead hands.

In closing, I just want to say I hope I can give you all some great information that will help you make a more informed decision if you want to buy a lab putter.  I think we all know how pricy golf equipment can be and if I can help someone have confidence in their decision and allow them to see whether or not that shaft upgrade is worth it I will be happy to have helped out the great group of golfers in the MGS community that have helped me make informed decisions to help my game (without this forum I would not be shooting my t350 irons right now) and I hope my review can provide the same help to other golfers too. 

First Impression (10 out of 10):

Let's start with the experience and the looks.  Firstly, LAB has been great they rechecked fit and were their usual customer-focused selves during the order process.  In my case, they are even providing a new grip for my original putter to make the testing a more even stance between my two putters as I am currently using a non-standard grip (still waiting on the new grip to start the side-by-side testing data collection). 

I wanted to get some initial first-use data on the TPT shaft to compare once the grip on my steel shaft is changed.  I started by taking a quick slo-mo video to look at the stability of the head and was impressed by the stable head throughout my putting stroke.

This video was posted as a separate update in the Forum Thread when I posted about initial rating being up.

I followed this up with some time on the putting green to do a little comparison although I did not want to get into accuracy yet without matching grips. I tried to use consistent strokes to look at distance as I felt from my practice putts the previous night with the TPT shaft that the putter was a little “hotter” and was more consistent distance-wise right out of the gate.  This seemed to be supported by this initial lag putting (30-foot putts) where trying to make the same stoke the TPT shaft seemed to have some tighter clusters with more distance (In the images below yellow balls are TPT shaft putter balls)

In terms of looks the new TPT shaft looks great, especially with the green color choice I made.  Although this is a review of the new shaft first and foremost, I think a shout-out needs to go to LAB for introducing the black press pistol grip.  I think this is the real star of the show and the combination of black shaft and black grip gives the putter a great aggressive look. I know this is purely a psychological thing, it just feels meaner all blacked out. 

 

I went on to play a full round to try to get used to the TPT shaft before I collect my first round of SAM lab data on the 8th and began full-scale comparative data collection and am happy to report that my average putts over 18 holes were 2.3 which is dead even to what my last three rounds with my steel shaft DF3 and I plan to get at least 3 more full rounds in during this test period in addition to more specialized practice drill data collection.  So it will be good to see if this number decreases as the 2.3 of my current DF3 was down from 3.2 pre-LAB putter (About a 40% decline and yes I know I was a terrible putter that’s why I bought a lab in the first place).

TLDR 10 out of 10 to start but still a lot of data collection to go

LAB did a validation of our fittings using our current putters prior to placing orders for the TPT LAB's. 

One of the concerns I had with using a hybrid for an armlock fitting, was the degree of accuracy that LAB would able to achieve. I was intrigued to see how the fitting would go with the actual putter I was fitted for in my hand.

If you had these same concerns, you'll be happy to know the specs came back exactly the same as my original order. It was a good process to go through, if not just for the validation. This is the front on video required for an armlock fitting. Unlike the other putters, you have to be fitted for loft as well.

Stats that I keep that I would love to see:

First putt distance (average and median)

Second putt distance (avg and median)

Second putt distance where first putt > 15ft (avg and median)

That’s how I’ve been tracking whether my DF3 is better than my prior Mezz.1

@yungkory what kind of information would you want to help make your decision?  I am a very data-driven guy so when making these types of choices in my own game I tend toward looking at distance or dispersion on the simulator data type choice.  For my testing I am trying to get a big sample of data around putt distance control, overall putt dispersion from a variety of distances, and a longer-term look at percentage made vs missed and putt missed severity.  These were the areas I thought of to test to help my decision-making process along with more intangible or personal preference parts like feel so I would be interested to hear what areas around putting others would like information for so this testing is helpful to the whole MGS forum community.

Oh, nope, definitely not going to make more. But I'll miss them with a more solid strike.
