Bench grinder for turning a ferrule?

Recommended Posts

Just got a deal on a 6" bench grinder. Home Depot has the Ryobi one for $25, figured it would be worth it just for sharpening lawn mower blades.

I've always turned down ferrules by hand, but would it work to use a bench grinder with a buffing wheel to turn them down? Then a little acetone to shine them up?

I was thinking something like this kit...

Buffing Wheel

I use a 1/4 hp belt sander with a linen belt for ferrules, the low speed of the belt allows me to hold the ferrule against it a little longer without melting the ferrule than against a high speed belt.

A bench grinder turns too fast, you'll melt ferrules.

Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Bomb and gouge. Yes, I'm a club gigolo.

That's what I was afraid of. Oh well, still worth it for the mower blades.

Do you know what the max RPM you would want to be able to turn a ferrule is?

Personally, I prefer to turn them down by hand.

Using a belt sander I would recommend a 1 x 42 belt sander going at 1800 rpm the belt can be the blue felt belt or linen belt. Why a belt going that speed? allows for mistakes and low impressions into the ferrule.

Some folks use a table top sander running at 3600 and a 1 x 30 in size. It can be done but you must be very very gentle when applying pressure.

Using a power tool to turn down a ferrule is a lazy attitude. Just trim it down to size with a paper cutter blade, round it out with a bit of 200 grain and shine it back with a wipe or two of acetone.

Using the power is a great way to get it done right and quick. using the sandpaper techniques is great for a few clubs but you run a bigger chance of things going wrong with that than a belt IMO

Agreed. If you have a 1" belt sander, it makes everything much easier and smoother, IMO.

You're really going to go looking for a power tool just to turn a bit of plastic ?

Yup, my time is worth money. If I can spend $30-$40 and save myself an hour or two then it's worth it.

You're right, but only because you have different priorities. In truth I don't do these things myself and prefer to pay others to do them these days. I only do them when I'm faced with an emergency, as in having forgotten to go to the pro and have a game next day with my clubs disassembled because of a bad idea. The pro does not charge all that much and he usually does a cleaner job than I would. :)
