Good afternoon all,

I'm looking for some advice, I popped out for a round the other night and when i took out the putter on the 1st green i was horrified to see what had happened to my beloved Bettinardi........see pics attached

I think a mix of fertilizer on the greens and wet conditions (I live in Scotland its wet all year) plus me leaving the putter in the headcover for a fortnight has caused the damage.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get her back to her former beautiful self?

Any help would be massively appreciated

thanks and regards

Grant

Oh man, sorry to see that.   It's not much help, but there is a place in North Carolina called Continental Golf that just about everyone I know here sends there clubs to, to be refinished.  Maybe you can reach out to see if they have any contacts in Scotland.

Good Luck

I know it sounds crazy but use toothpaste and a toothbrush and it should remove it.

Interesting, well that certainly would be cheaper than a trip to NC...but not as fun  :D

There are some home remedies to remove the spots I'm sure, but I don't know what is the final coat. Most chemicals that remove stains would also strips the coating if you have one on the putter originally. Look it up if your putter needs one. It may help.

Sending it out for a refinishing job is always a good idea.

Thanks all, I'll try the toothpaste first before i book my tickets

Do i leave the toothpaste on for a while before i start scrubbing?

It could also just be a mix of water and dirt stains... did you try with warm water and soap first?

Nope, use a lil water & scub with toothbrush or fingers.

Works decent on car headlights to remove the oxidation as well.

To give a little value to the thread:

I tend to think soaking with hot water and dish soap for a while would be a nice first step in this cleanup. A brillo pad might prove useful too if you can find one that's relatively soft.

No the toothpaste is a very mild abrasive. I've used in many times on Cameron's and even a Betti

Yes. After looking and reading this would be my attempted cure.

The 'rust' spots you are seeing are in fact iron deposits. Wouldnt think it was part of the fertilizer used there but you never know. Rust (and iron) is everywhere right but some nitrogen or chem and the rest if in a wet spot could 'heat up' the finish and blotch it or strip it no doubt. Anyway, some baking soda past basically would neutralize what is ever on there and stall the rust.

Dry it GOOD and then take some good metal or wheel polish ands rub it in to a light coat. Refurb from there.

Yeah, winters at the shop were like that -_-.

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally got round to cleaning up my putter and although it's not back to pristine condition I'm pleased with the results.

I went down the warm water approach first which had limited effect, I added some toothpaste and some further elbow grease and this cleaned up the putter.

Thanks for all your help
