Before we get this little show on the road I want to thank a few people/organizations. First off I want to thank my wonderful wife Taylor for letting me obsess over these irons for the last few weeks and letting me go out and test them both on the course and on the range. She even came along for a bit of it, thats alot to ask a pregnant lady! Secondly, I would also like to thank Mygolfspy and Cleveland Golf for allowing me to test yet another one of their products (I also tested to RTX-3's and the Q-Star Tours). I guess I could be the self proclaimed “MGS Cleveland Golf Tester.” I was so excited to be chosen and hope I can do this product justice during the review process.

Let us begin this review with a bit about me, I mean who doesn't like talking about themselves right? I grew up in Texas and moved up to Oklahoma to play baseball at Oklahoma Christian University, a small DII school here in Edmond. After college I decided to stay and therefore I play most of my golf in and around the OKC metro area. I was introduced to the game of golf by my maternal grandfather when I was in high school but I never took it seriously until about 4 years ago. Baseball was fun but I had no idea I could love a sport as much as I love golf now. The addicting thing about golf is how difficult it is, no matter how good you do you could always have done better.

During my years playing ball I was a first-pitch fastball hitter, meaning I was super aggressive and did not like to get down in the count. That attitude and approach most certainly carried over to golf. I am pretty aggressive and take on pins and bunkers when I know I shouldn't. Distance with any club has never been an issue for me so I think I can carry anything, leading to a bit of overconfidence. Therefore, most of my growth as a player over the last 4 years has been a mixture of both mental work and swing changes. That being said I still take on tucked pins way too often, leading to some very dumb mistakes. Below you can find a breakdown of my game via Arccos, which I hope will give you a better sense of me as a golfer.

I want to pause right here and focus a bit on my irons since this is an iron review. I bought these OTR before I knew custom fitting was such an important thing. I will break this down more later in the review but these clubs are very comparable to the CBX Launchers. The biggest difference is the forged vs. cast.

Currently my handicap is a 9.2 via The Grint app and I generally shoot in the mid to low 80s. My swing tempo is relatively average, here is a video below:

 

Here is a very brief breakdown of my game:
Typically, I pull a PW for a 150 yard shot, but I am thinking that will be different after this review….spoiler? I am currently fighting a left side miss with my irons. The ball starts left and then continues left. My ball flight is probably a mid level ball flight. My game is in a bit of flux right now, so as of THIS moment the strengths of my game lie in my chipping, putting and wedge play as I am driving the ball all over the place.

Right out of the box I knew these irons looked pretty slick. I love the blue stripe on the back of the irons and find it very sharp looking. Upon first glance I did feel as if these clubs were a bit big and bulky, specifically the lower irons (4-6) they looked short and squatty kind of like a hybrid.

Ultimately there are 4 “techy” Cleveland has put in this iron set.

Tour zip grooves, basically grooves between the grooves, to get you more spin to help hold greens. Cup-Face technology is supposed to increase the forgiveness of the club while also maintaining a higher ball speed for more distance. V-sole technology (seen in video) is exactly how it sounds, a v-shaped sole on the club that allows for better turf-club interaction. Finally, feel-balance technology, this tech is in the hosel and essentially just moves the center of gravity towards the middle of the club, allowing more forgiveness.

Cleveland as a brand really had me excited about these irons, I loved the RTX-3 wedges so I was really looking forward to testing the CBX irons as well. Cleveland has historically made good clubs so I would expect this set to be good as well. Unfortunately, because I live in Oklahoma and Cleveland/Srixon are in Cali, my fitter was not able to fit me for this set specifically so I had to hit a comparable set from another OEM hahahahaha.

Honestly, these irons are going to have to outright beat my Nikes for me to put them in the bag. I hit my current set very well and love the looks/feel of them as well. Therefore the new technology is going to have to earn its spot in my bag. The attribute that drew me to want to test the CBX Lanuchers was the precision and accuracy that Cleveland raved about. So naturally I am looking for consistency and accuracy. I want to know when I pull the club out of my bag what distance it is going to go. Here is exactly what the CBX irons will have to do to earn their spot: They have to go consistent distances, with consistent ball flight to hit a spot time after time. The irons will also have to be forgiving for days when I am not striking it well. Accuracy must be there as well. I want to be able to pull a club and know that I can count on the shot shape to get me to the hole; I feel as though spin will fall in this category as well. Something that I want to measure as well is feel, I love having forged irons and I am very worried that the CBX irons, being cast, will not have the same soft feel. I am looking forward to the next part of this review as the Cleveland irons will battle it out against the Nikes for supremacy in my bag! The biggest question is whether or not the CBX's technology will give them the ability to boot the Nikes out of my bag and my life forever.

Well, the decision has been made.  Let me give you guys some ideas of what all it took to make this decision.  I went to the driving range specifically for these clubs 15 times, I checked my credit card statement.  A large bucket every time has about 75 balls in it. 15 X 75= 1125 balls. Take out the 10 or so driver ego balls each time and you get about 975 shots hit on the range.  Legit I practically lived there. I got to use these clubs for 12 rounds. 4 of those were 9 hole rounds but still, a good chunk of data.   It took a lot of time, sweat and only a handful of tears to come to my decision on my bag for the rest of 2018. Part 1: “Looks Aren't Everything, But They Certainly Help”

 

Ok, out of the box I was very happy with the look of these clubs.  Put them in my bag and BAM! They really did pop with that nice blue/black contrast on the back mixed with the matte silver finish.  The pro I take lessons with even noticed the sharpness of these clubs before we even began my first lesson with them. The first critique for the CBX Launchers comes with their shape. PW-7 iron, the clubs are beautiful, thinn-ish (same as the JPX 900s, Srixon 565s and such) topline nice and tall at address and look sharp down by the ball.  With the 6-4i I was less impressed. The lower irons have a short and squatty look to them that really bothered me. You can also see the cavity on the back of the club at address, something that is similar to the 5 iron on my Nike's but the Launchers are a bit more offensive here. From what I have read and seen Cleveland designed the set to do this in the lower irons.  They are calling it “progressive club shaping” and it is designed to help you get more distance out of the longer irons with their lower profile. I was not a huge fan of this, whether or not the design worked we will touch on later…

However the overall look of the set aesthetically is quite nice.  I do however have to mention one of the biggest disappointments for this set was the fact that the sharp, good-looking blue stripe on the back of the irons started chipping away within 4 weeks of use.  I had not even walked with these, only ridden in carts and the paint was already chipping. This was SUPER disappointing!

Part 2: “Sing to me, Some good ole country harmony”

 

Ben Hogan once said that a perfectly struck golf shot “goes from the shaft, to your hands and then to your heart.” I think any set of clubs will feel and sound pretty good when struck pure.  The CBX Launchers are no different. The word I would use to describe them is solid. They do not have this super harsh “oh my gosh did I just hit a rock” feel to them. They are certainly not soft either, I think they are just solid.  I would compare it to hitting a nail with a hammer; just a nice solid strike. The same thing goes for the sound of this set. A nice solid sound, not offensive at all but a good THWACK! when you hit it. Here's a sample: You can hear the difference between the two.

 

 

The clubs honestly feel solid across the face.  Extreme mis-hits certainly make a different sound but they really aren't bad. Honestly, the clubs felt just like squaring up a baseball in the middle of the bat, you can literally feel it compress.

 

Sound and Feel Score: 9 out of 10

 

Part 3: “The Range Warrior”

 

My focus on the range was to judge accuracy, workability, and distance control.  Like I mentioned above, I spent quite a bit of time out there with this set. A drill I used quite often was the 9 ball drill.  3 draws (low, middle, high) 3 straight (low, middle, high) and 3 fades (you guessed it, low, middle, high). Of course I did my best at this drill, I'm not Tiger, and I found this set to be decently workable. The straight ball flights and the fades were certainly easier, I find it a bit tough to turn these clubs over. Now, some of that may be my swing but I have found it difficult to hit draws or hooks consistently.  Distance-wise however, it was relatively easy to gain at least 5-10 yards vs the Nikes. I would alternate them and found that the Cleveland's certainly went further. This is due to the difference in lofts between the two sets as the CBX Launchers are at least 1 or 2 degrees stronger than my VRS Forged.

 

 

Of course as I am not a scratch golfer I certainly experienced a few off center hits. What I found on the range was that the mis-hits were slightly punishing in distance but stayed pretty true to their intended line.  As my swing decided to desert me for a time this summer as the off center strikes plagued me beyond just the range. However, my overall impression on the range was just like sound and feel, a solid, well built iron that did what it was supposed to do; offer forgiveness and get the ball going towards the target.

Part 4: “Once More Unto the Breach!”

 

The Cleveland CBX Launcher Irons was an attempt by Cleveland to put their wedge technology into an iron and see how it performed.  The v-sole, the tour-zip grooves and the progressive club shaping were all meant to help the average golfer shave strokes. So how well did they do?   Here is where I would like to dive into some numbers using Arccos stat tracking.  We will start with an analysis of accuracy on approach shots into greens. I took note of my GIR percentage before I started using the CBX Launchers. With my Nike VRS Forged the percentage stood at 38%.  Throughout the rounds I played I used the GIR feature in Arccos to track how many greens I was able to hit using just the Cleveland Irons. The percentage that I calculated was 41% GIRS in the rounds I played with the CBX set.  That means a 3% increase in just over 10 rounds. In my mind thats 3% more birdie putts and at least 1 or 2 strokes gained. A natural effect of hitting more greens was getting to see the stopping power of these clubs. I would not say the launch of the clubs on the course was any different than what I was seeing on the range a nice mid-range ball flight that took once bounce and checked. It did not seem to me that the irons had any more stopping power than the Nikes.

I continued struggling to get consistent contact on my irons. This honestly was not a bad thing because it really allowed me to see how these clubs performed on the course when you aren't at your best.  I felt confident in my ability to manage my misses with these clubs, meaning I knew I could at least get the ball going somewhere. Here is an example from my second round with the CBXs where i shot a 77 and really didn't hit a single good iron shot.

 

One thing I still have been unable to shake is the unpleasant look of the lower irons, even if I did hit them well...

 

 

Another critique on this set is the fact that I could not get them to hook very easily. Whenever I needed to hit a recovery shot that required a draw/hook I found it difficult to pull off, they would mostly go straight and higher than intended, sometimes clipping trees and winding up in worse places.  

 

Distance comparison with current gamers:

 

 

Notice several things here.  First off, I really did not see a difference in distance in the high irons, I actually saw a decrease in distance up until the 7i.  This data excludes punch outs, half shots and bump and runs and even still the Nikes have the edge in the higher irons. The lower irons however firmly belong to the CBX Launchers.  Increased distance on every club from the 7i down. Most notably for me was the fact that the CBXs fixed the gapping issue I had with my 7i and 8i in the Nike set (see highlighted cells).  

Overall, how did they perform? They performed great, I played some of my best golf of the year with these clubs and half of the time I wasn't striking the ball well. I shot two rounds in the 70s with this set.  My handicap is now a solid 9.4 trending down to 8.9! I mean how do you argue with results like that? The goal of the V-sole, special grooves, progressive shaping and the feel-balance was to help shave strokes off and they did! I am still not completely sold on them, even though I am playing well with them and there are some things I would like to see improved.  I did see several shots come out EXTREMELY HOT! And knuckle their way through the green. See below:

 

 

Those had no chance of holding a green even if they hadn't flown it. I do have to give credit to the v-sole on the irons.  I was a huge fan of the idea with the RTX-3's (you can look up my review) and I am still a huge fame of them now. I especially think they help in the rough and fairway bunkers.  In Oklahoma we have bermuda rough and it can be a nightmare to get through. That's where the v-sole truly shines, and I think it is the best piece of innovation on this set.

 

 

I would love to see Cleveland continue to develop and improve the v-sole feature.  The progressive shaping, I could do without. Still overall, the clubs did what they were designed to do, lower my score.   

 

Course performance score: 39 out of 40

 

Part 5: “To Be Or Not To Be.”

 

Will the CBXs remain in my bag? I think they have to, this is MGS, so despite the way I feel about them if I keep shooting in the 70s why in the heck would I toss them out of the bag? I gamed them for my first golf league experience and they got me to within 1 stroke of winning points 3 times, so obviously they perform under pressure. I guess what I am saying is I will keep them in the bag until I find something that can do the same things but are a forged head, and a bit more workable (snobbish I know) and fit me a bit better.  That being said, I think this set is a perfect for any 10-30 handicap golfer. It will do all of the things it says it will do; easy to hit, inspires confidence, solid feel and fast ball speed. If you're in the market for a solid set of forgiving and controllable irons I would certainly give these a look.

P.S. In case I am too long winded

 

I set off on this review journey with a decision to make.  I had to decide whether or not to replace my beloved iron set.  Like I said before, the Clevelands were going to have to earn their way into to my bag and they did enough to win the spot.  I am not in love with these irons but I cannot deny that they are a solid set and worth a look. I do not feel as though they excel at one thing or another but do everything well. Honestly, they lost points on just a few small things that added up, (paint chipping cost 4 pts) They are not the spinniest irons, but they will hold a green.  Nor are they the thinnest irons but are aimed to be more forgiving. The forgiveness is offered through a great piece of engineering in the v-sole; giving your turf interaction a significant boost especially out of the rough. They do what they say they are going to do, help you play better. In the end, if the equipment helps you get the ball in the hole, you'd be stupid not to use it right?

First off, I would like to thank MyGolfSpy and Cleveland Golf for this opportunity to test the CBX irons.  Ever since I was selected for this, I've been waiting patiently for them to get here so I can get them to the course and see how they do.  I will say that as soon as I made it to the course and went to the driving range, they caught several people's eyes and I started getting questions about them almost immediately. 

 

 

A Little About Me

So let's get started with a little about me and how I got started in this crazy game. I'm from Louisiana so we get to play almost year round, although I get cold easily so I don't really like to play when it gets below 50.  I picked the game up when I was 19.  I was about to start college and several friends of mine talked me into going out with them to play at the local golf course.  Most of us ended up scheduling our classes around our golf.  We played 3-4 days a week and had no idea what we were doing. 

After college, I started really trying to learn the mechanics of the swing and started playing a lot of tournaments.  I took lessons from several different pros and really started fine tuning my game. I got my handicap down to about a 2 and then decided I would try to chase being a teaching professional myself.  I was hired on by another course around here to manage the course and give lessons, but it didn't take me long to realize that (1) this wasn't going to pay the bills and (2) I didn't get to play anywhere near as much as I used to.  I stayed there about a year and then had to go back and get a real job when the money started getting a little tight. Now I'm back to playing a couple times a week and my current handicap is somewhere around a 5-6 if I were to guess.  I don't have an actual USGA handicap at the moment, but I'm about to sign back up and start keeping track of that again.

 

My Game

Here is my current setup:

Driver: Callaway Epic SubZero with Aldila Rogue Max 75 stiff shaft

3 Wood: Callaway Rogue SubZero with Project X Evenflow 6.0 Stiff 75g shaft

3 Hybrid: Callaway Rogue with Aldila Synergy 60 HYB stiff shaft

Irons:  Callaway Apex (4-PW) with True Temper XP 95 stiff shafts

Wedges:  Callaway MD3 wedges (50, 54, 58)

As you can see, I'm a slight fan of Callaway equipment.  I typically play a slight draw, but sometime that can get out of hand and turn into a 30-yard hook.  So my normal miss is to the left with my irons.  As far as distances go, my PW maxes at 150, I'll play 7-iron anywhere from 175-185 and 4-iron anywhere from 210-220 with the rest of them mixed in somewhere.  I will say that I didn't start hitting my irons that far until I go those Apex irons.  Before that, my 7-iron maxed out at 165-170.  When I tested my current set of irons, I loved the way the feel off the face and I also loved the extra distance I got out of them.  I have kind of a mid-level ball flight, but also play a choke down shot that I play a lot lower.  My wedge game is probably my strongest aspect while my weakest is probably my driver, but if it's on, it'll be a really good day.

On first sight, I really liked the way these irons looked.  I did notice the top line wasn't quite as thin as I would like it and they also felt a little heavy, but I wasn't sure about that until I compared them with my current set and there was noticeably more weight with the Clevelands. Other than those two things, I really liked them. 

 

 

I have been really intrigued by the technology that comes on these irons and really want to see if they do what Cleveland says they'll do.  The 4 key aspects of these irons are the Tour Zip grooves, cup-face technology, v-sole technology, and the feel-balance technology.  These are supposed to give more forgiveness as well as add distance and spin. 

 

 

 

I'll be honest and say that I've never really given Cleveland much thought when it came to picking out a set of irons.  I've used their wedges before, but that's about it.  I've hit a set of their old irons (don't remember which ones) but I was already set on Callaway so they didn't get a fair chance.  

 

I got these set up with the same shafts I have in my current Callaway irons. I've been fitted for my last two iron sets and was told to get standard everything and these were no different, so they are standard length/lie.   I wanted to test the CBX irons as opposed to the HB irons simply because that's the line that was similar to what I've always played. 

 

 

 

Callaway Apex Comparison

 

As I said earlier, I'm a huge Callaway fan and also absolutely love the irons I'm hitting now, so it's going to be challenging for these to out-perform my current set, but I'm going to give them a fair shot.  When I first put them side by side with my Callaway irons, the first thing I noticed was the larger top line I mentioned earlier.  It's definitely not a positive in my opinion, but it also will not turn me away from them either.  The one thing I really hope to get out of these is a little more consistency than what I have now.  When I compared the lofts to what I currently have, the Cleveland irons are actually one degree stronger than my current set, so I don't expect to lose any distance, but may gain a little. 

 

 

I'm really not looking to add more distance, but if it does, that will be fine.  Overall, the only way they replace my current set is if they give me the same outcome as my Callaway irons with a little more consistency and accuracy.  If they can do that, I'll gladly take the Callaways out of the bag.

First of all I would like to thank MyGolfSpy and Cleveland Golf for this opportunity. Testing is a priviledge that I don't take lightly. Living in Georgia provides year round golf and I usually get out there three times per week.   I look forward to bringing you some information that may help you decide if the Cleveland Launcher HB irons will work for you. My name is Bill aka ole gray. Stage one is off and running  (Happy July 4th!) so I'll start my review with a patriotic pic.

 

 

I'm in the senior years of my life (67 years young) and excited for this opportunity to test the Launcher HB irons. My interest in golf started right before I was drafted into the Army and off for a tour of duty in Vietnam. Prior to leaving for service my Dad had just retired and he and a friend took up golf. They invited me along as Dad knew I loved every sport known to man.  I thought while being a pretty decent athlete in high school, golf would be a pushover. I tagged along and hit a few balls with Dad's Wilson Sam Snead Blue Ridge set.   Pretty wild experience as I was whacking balls all over the county.  Geez what a humbling experience!  It took me down a notch or two however it was like sitting on a porcupine quill, It sticks with ya. 

 

That was my brief introduction to golf as I had to head off for basic training, then AIT, and off to serve my country. There were no golf courses in Nam, at least I never saw any because I was too busy trying to get back to stateside in one piece. I made it through my tour of duty and hopped back on the civilian train. I married into a golfing family where my farther-in-law was pretty darn good. He won the local city championship twice.  My brother-in-law was also a single digit so between the two of them, they got me started back into the game. You know, the game I thought was going to be a pushover when I first hit a golf ball with my Dad. 

 

I've played golf for the better part of  forty years and my handicap has flipped around like a trout during mating season. I'm the kind of guy who can get hot and look like I know what I'm doing and then all of a sudden get the OMG what just happened look.  My handicap has recently  climbed (15) so I'm hoping the extra forgiveness the HBs advertise will be the ticket.  I'm excited about my testing opportunity and whether I receive good or bad results, I love the game for the companionship and outdoor time so it's all relevant.

One day while I was at the gym, my wife sent me a message with this teaser. Needless to say I was happier than an elephant in peanut harvesting season. Of course the old unboxing pics always make folks wet their pants so without further adieu, start soaking.  lol

 

 

My Callaway Steelheads have pretty much the same specs as below so hopefully the transition will be smooth. 

 

 

 

I am very much looking forward to bonding with these irons and providing some great info.  I've played three rounds so far and each time out gets better. They obviously are blessed with a big butt which makes it super easy to elevate the ball.  Think hybrid irons and if you like ya women big, you'll be humping around the course with a smile on ya face.  I'm a good hybrid player which no doubt is the best part of my game so having a bag full of hybrid looking clubs is right in my comfort zone.   Here are a  couple of pics to gaze at so go ahead and admire these exceptionally well made and in my opinion, sharp looking irons.  

 

 

The bottom side of the HBs are flat out sexy. The chrome and black blend very well together giving the irons a sophisticated look.  The matted black face hides the the bottom in a cool way.  It's like you are looking down at a regular size iron.  Well the leading edge is a bit large however it's a comfort thing for me. I'm normally a wham bam (quick transition) thank ya mam type swinger however with the HBs, my timing and move through the ball seems smoother. I suppose the security of the big foot print is bringing out the Sam Snead in me. You're either gonna love em or if you're a blade fan and look the other way. You might want to take a look anyways because these dogs will bark! I'm in the I think they look dayuuuumm good club and if they help me play better and more consistent golf, so be it.  My normal miss is a duck hook. Since the HBs are in the SGI catagory and have offset built in, it will be interesting whether they magnify my miss (hook), or hopefully help me hit the ball straighter with more consistency.   I like less stress in my outings so yea, bring on the big butts and let's get this review started!

My Callaway Steelhead 7 iron is in the 145 - 150 yard range with ball flight in the mid to high range.  What I'm seeing with the Cleveland HB irons is similar distances with higher ball flight!  I seem to hit more chunkier shots with the thinner soled steelhead irons.  Chunks are my nemisis so with the Launcher HB's having more bounce I'm seeing less of them which makes me a happy camper.  The sole just glides through the turf and lifts the ball nice and high. Later in my review I will be comparing these 7 irons at the local hitting bay in Dicks so stay tuned for side by side comparisons.

You can see as the irons go up in loft the size becomes closer. 

 

I decided to go ahead and buy some headcovers for my set/review.  They have the HB Launcher iron headcovers at Amazon.  The headcovers look sharp and offer awesome protection for these irons. Also you have  no clanking going on so it makes for a quiet ride.  I've never had iron covers so this is a new experience for me. One thing I might add is you have to be mindful of making sure you have them securely attached to the club.  They tend to ride up a bit and could fall off if you get hasty with putting them on. There is a small amount of velcro which does help however it doesn't secure them enough to not be careful putting them back on. 

 

 

They are kind of expensive at $42.00 bucks however if you want to keep em pretty, they're available.  I'm wondering how long it will take me to lose one of them suckers.

Stage 2  - Cleveland Launcher HB Irons

 

 

 

I'm hopping ahead of my co - testers and posting up my stage 2 today.  I'll be checking on this thread often so if you have any questions fire away.  I begin stage 2 with pre round range work hitting different shots with various irons and then on to the course for game type conditions. I threw in a few short videos demonstrating how the HB irons are working for me. 

 

Looks:

 

You look down and see this big ole head with the thick top line. If ya don't like thick heads, you're in the wrong neighborhood. It's designed to have max forgiveness so they have the  hybrid look and design. Larger from 4 iron and slim down towards the PW.  Black with silver and chrome combo looks sexy!.  There's no gaudy looking graphics to distract your eye which I  prefer.  Simply put it's a very good looking set of irons.  The black finish on the top/back of the irons makes the irons appear thinner. The only thing I notice when I set up behind the ball is the topline.  Yea the topline is thick however it gives me confidence that I can spank that ball's arse!   They ooze confidence when you are addressing the ball. IMO they are the best looking SGI iron on the market!  I've had a couple guys notice these irons and remark how sharp they look. 

 

 

I think Cleveland did an outstanding job on the design of these clubs as they are well built and the color combos are exceptionally appealing to the eye.  Some golfers may not like the thick topline.

Sound & Feel:

 

I love the sound of a flushed golf ball off this face.  It has a solid whack that let's everyone know the ball is struck well.   I know these are cast irons however they sure sound sweet! The designers seemed aware these clubs shouldn't have the sound of hybrids therefore they added ribs in the chamber which results in a deep and pleasing sound at impact. It reminds me of crunching down on a north Georgia  fall apple.  Now feel is right there with with the sound.  When flushed, the ball comes off the face with a mission.  I did notice when shots are struck off the toe it's a different feel. Not quite the mash potato feel you get on center strikes however not enough to be concerned.  Are you sure these things are not butter soft forged irons!?

Range Performance:

 

This is where you can build confidence that comes with a SGI set of irons. If you like a nice high trajectory with heat seeking missile accuracy, here's your irons. They simply wanted to go straight the majority of the time and that's regardless of whether you hit the shot off the heel, toe, high or low.  These irons are legitimate super game improvement irons in the highest regard.  If you are afraid you won't be able  move the ball left or right, fear no more.  They are not a one dimensional iron.   I actually took the time to record some videos of my work with these on the range.  I hit shots with the PW, 7I, and then hit a few 4 irons off a tee.  I'll use it quite a bit on the shorter holes as it's a breeze to hit straight  down the fairway. 

 

Let's talk about distance. I was recently diagnosed (MRI) with two bulging disc and a pinched nerve in my lower back which inadvertantly moved over and flared up my left hip.  I'm hitting solid shots however my yards of carry has suffered quite a bit .  I hit the HBs very similar distances to my previous set of Callaway Steelhead irons however the HB's took a slight edge. Who would have thought a SGI set could muscle up to a GI set?  Hmmmmm game on boys & girls!

Now let's move on over to the range and see what the HB irons have under the hood!  You'll notice I'm a picker of the ball and you'll rarely see a divot from me. The HBs work great for my swing on the majority of shots. I've had a few problems coming out of thick Bermuda rough however that's due to my flat swing plane and has nothing to do with these irons. I'm happy to say they also work great for you diggers too as my co tester wedgie, hits down on the ball with authority and lawd have mercy he hits the ball well with his HBs.

I hit some warm up shots with the 4 iron on a tee as I use it often on the shorter par 4 holes. Note:  I kept calling the 4 iron a hybrid because it was so easy to hit, I forgot it was an iron.

On Course Performance:

 

The HBs are pretty much point and shoot on the course.  Pick your target with good body alignment and let er go.  I've hit more accurate shots with these irons than I recall in many years.   Keep in mind they are fit to my specs so that really helps however the forgiveness factor is all off the charts. My buddies and I love to have a good time on the golf course!  We laugh a lot and give and take when it comes to the money games. In these videos you'll see the HB irons taking care of business for me.     We started videoing on #8 and them picked a few holes on the back side to show on course performance.  Without further ado, enjoy the arse whupping that's about to take place!

While these irons are super forgiving you can still move the ball left or right with proper skills.  I'm a mid capper (15) and if I can do it you good golfers should have zero problem working the ball.  I'm hitting more straight shots than ever with these irons however I still prefer the right to left shot shape. 

 

With that said the control I have with the HBs is far greater so let me think, distance or closer proximity to my target?   I'll take the closer shots all day long! Also having a better chance of hitting the ball where I'm looking really helps when the bucks are on the line. It definitely puts less stress on the ole billfold. The HBs are simply good in every aspect for my game.   Solid distance, a better chance of hitting where I'm intending to go, and confidence when playing those old coots for money, puts these in my bag for a looooong time!  Maybe forever more.

Final Performance Comments:

 

The HB irons are without a doubt the most fun irons I have ever bagged. They out performed what I considered a great set of irons (Callaway Steelhead irons) by a substantial margin. They have improved my chances of scoring through more consistent contact and dispersion.  My favorite thing about the HB irons is the immediate confidence I feel, while addressing the ball. I honestly can't see a thing I would like to see changed about this set and I can say that I'm now a bonafide Cleveland Golf fan!

Conclusion:

 

Golf is hard for the majority of us so why not game equipment that lightens the load. The Cleveland Launcher HB irons are fun and easy to play. They get the ball up fast and it simply wants to go straight. You can draw or fade with these irons however there's nothing wrong with shooting a bullet at the hole.  Truthfully I have no qualms if these irons stay in my bag for the rest of my golfing life.  They are that good for me.

 

I am 100 % satisfied that the Cleveland Launcher HB irons would be a tremendous asset to a whole slew of golfers.  From upper single digit to the 20+ cappers. They simply work, REALLY well....

Stage One Review – Cleveland Launcher HB Irons – 7/3/2018 - Wedgie

 

When I found out My Golf Spy and Cleveland Golf were hooking up four lucky people to go out with and share their experiences with their new models I jumped at the chance.  I raced to www.clevelandgolf.com to check out the choices.  The site is well done and a breeze to navigate so finding the clubs was quick.  The page loaded and there they were…..sisters I see.  One named CBX and one named Launcher HB.  I was immediately drawn to the cute sister, the CBX.  I read her profile and became aroused.  Turns out at 50 years old I just had to pee.  When I returned I looked over the Launcher HB.  Not as pretty, a little bigger, but I read about her anyway.  The more I read the more I thought she was a better match for me.  Forgiving, long, straight and high is just what I need.  Looks fade but love lasts so I picked the Launcher HB.

 

I anxiously watched the My Golf Spy forum to check out my competition for the date.  Damnit!  Ole gray just signed up to go out with the Launcher HBs…he is perfect for this.  I'll bet he will be happier than a possum on a stump I thought to myself.  Only one spot remained but to my surprise everyone was picking the cute sister.  By default I was chosen and am very grateful to MGS and Cleveland Golf for this opportunity.

 

I was asked if there was anything about her I would change and for the first time in my life I wanted her to be flatter.  2* flatter to be exact but everything else about her was perfect.  95 gram stock steel shafts in regular flex were a close match to my current True Temper shafts.

 

I could not believe she was coming here to Rhode Island from California to meet me.  I had hoped she would fly but she decided to drive.  Regardless, today is the day we are supposed to meet for the first time.  I'm a little nervous; I date a lot of clubs but never really tell anyone about it. 

 

Alas, here comes the FedEx guy to my office and there she is.  Dressed in a plain brown box but I can't take my eyes off of her.  I gently run my car keys down her side and the box slides open.  There she is, along with her entire family.  A big family I thought as all 7 of them laid there together with names ranging from 4-P.

 

 

I carefully helped each one out of the box and addressed the Dad first, his name was 4.  I did this one by one until I met each of them.  Just like my family they got progressively thinner as I worked my way down. They all felt the same but something seemed a little off, I just couldn't put my finger on it.  I lined them up and noticed all their toes were pointing up.  Posers I thought.  I like'em flat and these all stood upright.  4* more upright than I thought they would be and their travel documents confirmed that.  With potential love on hold and my buzz gone I said goodbye to each of them as I packed them up for their return trip to California.

 

 

I'm going to break character because I don't want to minimize the events that followed.  After I discovered the clubs were not built to the specs ordered I notified the MGS moderator of the error.  It was late in the day but I got an immediate response that he was on it.  The next day Cleveland Golf had responded, owned the mistake and had a plan in place to correct it.  People make mistakes, I get that, it is how they respond that matters.  Noelle at Cleveland Golf acted swiftly and professionally and I could not have asked for an easier process to correct the error.  In less than 24 hours problem solved and new clubs in my hands.  I knew nothing about Cleveland Golf going into this but I can assure you regardless of the outcome of this testing based on their service and honesty they have earned my respect as a company.  Back to our story…..

 

Feeling all alone and in despair I wondered; did I do the right thing?  Should I have given her a chance?  Did I let the one get away?  Then, all of the sudden, a co-worker grinning ear-to-ear steps into my office with a box in tow.  This time she flew to see me.  I opened the box, spotted her in the crowd, picked her up and held her for the first time.  Her name was 6.  I checked her out as she did the same to me.  I was happy to see she practiced safe travel.  As I looked 6 over I thought, a little chunky but yeah, I'd hit that!  I knew I made the right decision picking her, she looks much better in person than in her pictures.  You could tell she comes from a good home.  She has a clean, solid, quality look about her that would encourage confidence in any man.  A little junk in her trunk doesn't look bad either.  She felt great in my hands, lighter than she looks for sure and ribbed grips for my pleasure.

 

 

First question out of her mouth was; are you currently seeing anyone?

 

I quickly told her I had just recently split up with my Cobra F8 One Lengths but a couple of their friends would stick around to meet her.  What I did not tell her was that it would take a hell of a woman to kick them out of my life.  To do that she would need to perform much better in all regards.

We thought it would be best to get to know each other so I invited the entire family back to my place where we could talk.  We quickly learned we both had golf in common.  I went first.  I told her I had been playing for about 25 years but really didn't take it seriously until around 2008.  I play about 90% of my rounds in Rhode Island at sea level and the other 10% in Florida on a dude trip.  She said she wanted to go and I would love to take her but I barely know her.  Since I play 30-40 times a year there is plenty of time to see if she is dude trip worthy.  I also shared a recent video with 2 golf experts commenting on my swing which you can view here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdDW7pTKFhU

 

 

I proceeded to tell her how I had never taken lessons and probably never will due to time constraints.  Since I have never taken lessons I never practice, well, because I don't know what to practice.  I certainly did not tell her about my wife and 13 year old twins that I enjoy time with because I knew I would be sneaking around with her a lot.  Trying to impress I told her I have tour level swing speeds but didn't mention they are LPGA Tour level at 94 driver and low 80s with a 6.  Out of nowhere she asked if I was a swinger.  Taken aback by the question I hesitated but responded with, no, but I am open minded and willing to try new things.  She giggled and said, no, are you a swinger or a hitter?  Blushing I responded by telling her I was more of a hitter.  After a good laugh I went on about my issues with my quick tempo, lack of consistent ball striking and being a short hitter.  I told her like all the other 6's I have dated she would be my 150 club.  She confidently stated that I may need to use her little sister 7 for that.  We shall see!

 

 

I went on and on about how I have used the Grint for the last 6 seasons and how my index has been as low as 9.8 and as high as 15.5 over those 6 seasons.  It currently sits at 12.1 which is my lowest in over a year.  I invited the Grint out to share his thoughts on me and here is what he had to say:  Wedgie sucks! He only hits 4.6 GIR and 51% FIR in Rhode Island and 78% FIR but still a low 4.8 GIR in Florida with much larger greens.  Ball striking kills his scoring due to hitting shots fat, distance control and directional issues.  I jumped in and mentioned that I tend to come over the top and steep which creates these tendencies.  The Grint cut me off and told us my average score is 86.3 with a low this year of 79 and a high of 101, same course.  I was hoping he would keep his mouth shut but he had to add that I miss par 3 greens short 25% of the time and right 26% of the time.  This transfers over to par 4s and 5s as well.  I excused the Grint and told 6 I do putt well which keeps my scoring where it is but the Grint was right, ball striking keeps me from reaching single digits again.

 

 

I caught myself doing all the talking so I asked 6 to tell me a little bit about herself.  Well, for starters I'm from Cleveland.  I'm the smart sister.  The kind of club you can settle down with.  I have a hollow body design which makes me the most forgiving iron. Ever. I like to launch high and land soft and no cavity back design can do that as well as I can.  I may be a bit chunky but I have a really thin steel face and when I smack those balls…, I quickly cut her off.  Best of all my internal ribs make me sound and feel great and allow my man to customize me for loft and lie very easily.

 

 

 

She's dropping a little attitude on me at this point.  I like the confidence she has but if she can't back all that talk up I will call her out on it.  For all I know she's just like every other club I've ever gone out with and none of them have panned out for me.  Don't get me wrong, I'll give her a chance.   I'll take her out to the range, to the course, wash her and maybe even show her off to some friends.  Just between us she looks easy and I bet I can score.  In fact, if anyone has any dating tips for me they would like to share and hear about let me know or ask questions…I kiss and tell.  Is this going to be a summer fling or a love story with a happy ending?  Come back to find out!

Stage 2 Review – Cleveland Launcher HB Irons

After my stage 1 review I know many of you have been on the edge of your seat wondering if Wedgie found love.  Well I want you all to know I am single again.

 

 

That's right, single digit handicap.  This is the lowest it has ever been and it's the clubs, not me.  I have not been below a 12 since 2014.  I counted them up and I have played 9 different sets of irons during this time and nothing has come close to the performance these have provided.  The Launcher HB irons are the real deal and I hope to describe why in my review.

 

For testing I really changed nothing from my normal golf routine.  I was able to squeeze in 15 rounds and after the 15 I hit the driving range once.  I said I don't practice and during this testing that held true.  This baseline gave me the fairest way to compare my previous iron experience to the Launchers.

 

Looks

 

If you sit there and stare at the Launchers they are big.  If you sit there and stare at golf clubs you are weird.  The MGS staff says over and over looks do not impact performance so I'm frankly not quite sure why looks are part of the testing process.  Oh, I know, we would rather look like we are good golfers rather than actually being good golfers.  With that being said Cleveland did a fantastic job making these look great.  I love the color scheme and the black on grey with white lettering works very well together.  Nothing too flashy: just a clean classy look.  Did the look of these irons prompt any comments?  Nope!  The performance prompted several comments however.  At the end of the day when I address the ball I use the white alignment line on the bottom groove to align my shot then I look at the ball.  I have always done this so to me the look of a club never has been a factor.  I played with a fellow MGS member (not ole gray) and after he hit one shot with the Launchers his only comment after he flushed it was, “I could get used to that”. 

 

The durability has been fantastic.  I don't use iron covers and bag chatter has been minimal and the black portion, which was my biggest concern, has held up beautifully. For comparison these have held up much better than my Cobra single length irons and are right in line with the Mizuno Hot Metals I played most of last year in regards to durability.  After each shot I wipe down my club with a dry towel and the Launchers tend to hold on to dirt and grass more than other clubs mainly due to some nooks and crannies on the sole.  This never impacted performance but cleaning does require soapy water and some sort of brush to get all the dirt out.  I found a long, soft bristle brush works best for quick cleaning.

Sound and Feel

 

When I went to hit the Launchers for the first time I really expected a hollow tinny sound like you get when hitting a cheap driver.  What I got was a solid cha ching sound.  That is right…money!  They really do sound great.  They are an iron and produce a sound like an iron, not a hybrid.  Cleveland claims their “internal ribs improve sound” but without knowing what they improved over it is hard to compare.  I will say these will not be a distraction in the sound department and nearly every strike of the ball produces a pleasing thwack sound. 

 

The feel of these clubs is satisfying as well.  I expected everything to feel like a hybrid and that could not be further from the truth. They feel just like an iron to me and that is a good thing.  Despite the large head and forgiveness you can still tell where you catch it on the face whether it is high, low, heel or toe you know it.  If I really want to knit pick the feel off the PW lacks a little.  I am guessing that has more to do with the loft and ball I use more than anything but it still preforms and will not leave my bag. 

 

Sound and Feel – 9 out of 10

 

 

Range Performance

 

I waited until the end of my testing to do my range time for reasons stated earlier.  For the range time I took my Mizuno Hot Metal irons for comparison purposes.  I would hit the Hot Metal PW then move to the Launcher PW and proceeded to do this throughout the bag.  The results were interesting but expected.  In terms of hitting balls right at the flag I found the Mizunos to be more accurate from the PW-8, 3 clubs.  The Launchers were more accurate from the 7-4 irons.  But here's the thing, the Launchers were always close to the target while the Mizunos often went long or short.  If I translated this to the course 8 out of 10 times I'm putting with the Launchers and maybe 6 out of 10 times I'm putting with the Mizunos. 

Distance wise the Launchers are clearly a half club longer than any iron I have ever played.  When I need a little more out of them I can get it.  No hot spots on the face and that means no unexpected shots going 20 yards longer than expected.  Trajectory is high but by lowering my attack angle I did see lower flights.  If I could work the ball I'd report back on that but I don't.  I want to hit it straight and that is what these clubs want to do.  When I played with a fellow MGS'er I found myself behind a tree off the tee.  I told him this was HB Launcher workability test number 1 and I was able to pull off a slight draw of maybe 4-8 feet that landed right where I wanted it.  I guess if you generally can shape the ball you can with these.

The forgiveness of these clubs is where they shine.  Catch it in the middle of the face it does what you expect.  Catch it anywhere else it doesn't do what you expect.  I was constantly shocked knowing I caught if off the toe and seeing it hold its line in the air and hardly lose any distance.  My miss is right and it still is, just not as far right.  I used to miss short a lot and I still do, just not as short.  That is why  my index decreased 3 strokes during testing.  These clubs have stability about them that I have never experienced.  Ever hit a ball on the toe and feel the club twist?  That doesn't happen with these which make you feel in total control of the head.

 

Range Performance – 20 out of 20

 

 

On-Course Performance

Let me begin with this.  I have logged 174 rounds on the Grint app in 6 season of golf.  In the 159 rounds prior to the Launcher HB irons I broke 80 eight times or 5% of the time.  All of these were done on a 5,700 yard par 70 course.  In my first 10 rounds with the Launchers I broke 80 five times or 50% of the time.  Second time out I shot 77 on a 6,100 yard par 71 course and my fourth time out I shot a 76 on a 6,500 yard par 72 course.

 

 

 

Did I wake up and become Tiger Woods?  Nope, I woke up playing the Launcher HB irons.  For the first time in my life I can hit every iron in my bag consistently because of the forgiveness.  I go over trees instead of under them.  On tight par 4's I can use a long iron off the tee to minimize risk.  I can actually manage a golf course better because of the irons. These have never been options for me in the past. 

 

I cannot say enough good things about these clubs.  When I need a shot to go a certain distance these deliver.  They don't always go straight and that is on me, but they go the distance I expect.  My GIR is up 2.8 per round but when I miss I am damn close and often putting from the fringe rather than chipping from the rough or bunker.  These clubs hold greens like no other iron I have played.  The single length Cobra short irons got the ball up high but they still rolled out.  The Launchers fly lower and hit and stop allowing me to go after pins more often.  I thinned one from about 150 yards that hit the front of the green, checked up and stopped on the back of the green.  Normally I would expect to be 20 yards over the green.  Did I mention I game the Top Flite D2+ Feel golf ball?  Yep, if they will stop imagine what a good ball would do.

 

As stated they are a half club longer than any club I have played but gapping is off the charts good and this is what has made them game changers for me.  As an example my 160 club has always been a 5 iron but I would only hit it 160 about 40% of the time.  Depending on conditions I may still hit a 5 iron but I know it is going 160 yards 90% of the time.  This carries throughout the entire iron set and is why my scoring average has gone from 86.3 to 82.1 during this testing.  Hitting these is effortless and the pain in my elbows I have dealt with over the last 9 months has disappeared.  Who knew there were health benefits to playing these clubs?

 

When I played with ole gray I told him I was struggling to find anything negative to say and that is still the case today.  I thought hitting from the rough would be an issue going into this because of the wide sole.  Not the case, hitting from the rough has never been easier for me.  When I dropped the 77 with these I played with a buddy who was in the rough.  He hit his Ping SGI iron low and hot about 6o yards into the rough on the other side of the fairway.  He said ouch and that he could feel the club twist in the grass.  For testing purposes I asked him to hit my Launcher 6 from the same lie.  He flushed it pin high about 20 feet right of the flag.  I should probably mention he said, “Damn that is big” prior to hitting the shot.  I laughed and told him to keep on sucking.  My fairways hit have gone down during testing but my greens hit are up which should tell you how well these perform from the rough.

 

On-Course Performance – 40 out of 40

 

 

Play it or Trade it

 

Both, I am playing the Launcher HB irons and trading in all my other golf clubs.  I have played the best golf of my life with these and the scary thing is I think I could get a better fit at a good fitter.  In fact the next time I am in SoCal I am going to see if I can be fit at Cleveland Golf so I have a back-up set just to be safe. 

We all struggle in some area with our golf game.  If you struggle with iron play you need to give these a serious look.  I just don't buy it when someone says I can't look down at that club.  Give me one good reason why because I would love to hear it?  These are made to make golf easier which for me makes it more enjoyable.  If you want to try to look and dress like the pros drop those 60 pounds and go for it.  If you want to hit clubs because a pro does by all means do.  If you want to play better golf go try the Launcher HB irons.  To paraphrase the immortal words of jlukes, if you are concerned about how the clubs you play look you have issues with insecurity.

The Cleveland Launcher HB irons are hands down the best irons for a golfer of my caliber than any irons I have ever played.  By changing nothing else I have gone from being in the top 57% of golfers that keep a handicap to the top 30%.  Will you have the same results?  I don't know but if you want to score better I am very confident that at least 70% of you out there would benefit by playing these clubs.  The sad thing is I'll bet only 10% of you have the balls to try them.

Stage One Review – Cleveland Launcher HB Irons – 7/3/2018 - Wedgie

 

She's dropping a little attitude on me at this point.  I like the confidence she has but if she can't back all that talk up I will call her out on it.  For all I know she's just like every other club I've ever gone out with and none of them have panned out for me.  Don't get me wrong, I'll give her a chance.   I'll take her out to the range, to the course, wash her and maybe even show her off to some friends.  Just between us she looks easy and I bet I can score.  In fact, if anyone has any dating tips for me they would like to share and hear about let me know or ask questions…I kiss and tell.  Is this going to be a summer fling or a love story with a happy ending?  Come back to find out!
