2020 Official Member Review: Titleist T100S/T200 irons

... One of the problems graphite iron shafts had to overcome was hitting the ball farther than comparable steel. Aldila fixed that with their first heavy weight NV offering, the NV Tour shafts that were 130gms and had 1.5* of torque. VJ played them for awhile. Aldilas goal was to offer performance equal to Dynamic Gold but even tighter dispersion with the joint saving benefits of graphite. They accomplished their goal but at 1.5* of torque compared to around 2* for steel, they were beasts. I found Aldila VS Protos played almost identical to KBS Tour shafts. I think once they got the attention of better golfers withs hafts performing just like steel counter parts, they began making their own designed shafts to maximize performance like Steelfiber shafts, that don't resemble and steel shafts and are extremely popular on the LPGA and Champions Tour.

... I think today you can find just about any combination of performance you want with graphite iron shafts. Soft/mid/stiff tips and varying degrees of torque. While ball flight, spin and distance is very similar for Styeelfiber 95's and Recoil 95 Prototypes, the balance and feel is quite different. And so far I really like the low balance point of the Kuro Kage 105gm shafts. But distance is not longer than a comparable steel weighted shaft.

... Think of a wedding cake display that is just stunningly beautiful, but inside is cardboard and you sure would not want to eat it. That is what dating a Playboy Bunny was like.  🤪

Wait.... She tasted like CARDBOARD?!

@chisag  how different were spin characteristics when you switched from steel to graphite?

... That's a bummer. I hope you get the chance. I switched to graphite in my irons because of elbow tendonitis but after playing them for years now I just could not even imagine going back to steel. When I play my Z Forged with Modus 120's I feel the vibration, and Modus are very smooth for steel. If I were going to play them more than a handful of times each year, I would reshaft them with graphite.

I could not help but notice that you handicap has went down since you put the Titleist  T100's in play. Congrats on your great scoring recently! I can only dream of your H/C. 👍

... It certainly depends on shafts, but when I tested the VS Protos shafts with KBS Tours all the numbers were virtually identical. I have not compared numbers since as I have only played graphite for a long time now, but spin and trajectory is right where I need it to be. Although other than one round with VS Proto 85's( which were too light for me) I have no experience with graphite iron shafts weighing less than 95 gms.

... Thanks GaDawg. To be fair I just hit a stretch where everything was clicking on all cylinders. I have never had my swing feel so effortless both physically and mentally for this many rounds in a row. That said, I certainly can't discount the effect the T100-S may have had in this stretch. Maybe a perfect storm just all coming together at the same time.

I thought I noticed that '+' increased.  Congrats, Sam!  The one thing I'm eagerly waiting for at the end of the test is the answer to the question, "will the T100's ascend the iron throne?"

Jumped on Skytrack last night to do some wedge work. The randomizer is pretty cool. One thing that continues to impress me with these clubs is the consistent distances. Capture.JPG.15e6c0b4cdb9859373c7f095dd4cbda2.JPG

Here is snap shot of some of them.

I was swinging very well last night so that helps, but this is about as consistent as I get with a PW.

Front to back dispersion is 12 yards. This is the yardage consistency I am referring to. This is great IMO.

Right to left dispersion is 23 yards. This needs to tighten up some but overall extremely pleased with these numbers.

... Another round with the T100-S and in 30 mph winds (which is really starting to get old) shot even par 72. One of my concerns with my set was the 48* W2. I like to flight my wedges and I am used to a 46* and a 52* so that 6* gap was very familiar for me. I have not used my 48* much at all and was beginning to think I might have been better off with a 3 iron I could have used twice today. But with the strong 30 mph winds that were almost always dead sideways on this links style course, I found myself in the 90-110 range a lot. My 48* wedge is my 105-120 club and I used it 5 times today, mostly 3/4 shots to hold against or ride the wind. It might have been my most valuable club today. 👍

What did the clubs feel like the first time you hit them?

First time I hit them I thought they were the worst feeling clubs ever. I even had my buddy, who is scratch, hit them and he handed them back to me like they were a stinky diaper. It took me about 300 balls to figure out where the sweet spot was. It was really strange. They feel great now, just seems the sweet spot is higher on face and closer to toe side. My buddy hit them on Sunday after discussing this and like me his mind had completely changed.

... They are very similar to my Cobra Forged Tours so first time out they felt great. I do tend to hit my irons center or slightly toe side so what you said may make sense. Keep in mind I am also playing 105gm graphite shafts and they definitely have a dampening quality. They are a little crisper than my Cobra's or P760's but Titleist irons always have been and I am completely used to that feeling now. Funny you mention high on the face because several times I have been in thick rough and caught them too high on the face and these irons absolutely do not like to be hit up there. With the thin face and thin top line, they go nowhere and just feel awful. I have to make sure I choke down a good 1/2" and contact the ball like I am trying to hit it thin.

Alright folks the time is here for an epic battle!  Is it Ping vs Titleist?  Perhaps it is just @Berg Ryman vs @blackngold_blood. Only those that pick sides can truly say. For me it is just some old fashion fun and competition!

As Berg stated in the Ping thread we have set the parameters of the competition.

2-18 holes rounds Best net score counts

Irons only WITH putters (I did this last year without a putter using the back of a 4-iron and it wasn't easy🤣)

Deadline is July 12th giving us exactly 1 month to get our rounds in.

Pick a member, pick an OEM, or just pick on the combatants. No matter what this should be fun.

I'm not very familiar with Berg's golf game so I may have to do some research (or stalking😂) to do some trash talk but for now I will just end with this.

Well folks I had every intention of playing my first iron only round this morning but when I got to the course and realized I had it all to myself I decided to use today as an opportunity to hit a bunch of different shots from different places.

I still played one ball for a score (which was a nice 40/39 btw) but stopped at different locations and yardages throughout the course to try my hand at some shots I don’t normally play to see what happens. The T200’s performed well today with fades (everything seemed to fade today) and low punch shots.

I do have to admit that normally my favorite club has always been the 8-iron with every set I have had but with the T200’s the 6-iron has taken that title. I don’t know if it is the length or weight but it seems to be the only iron that I can really feel the “loading zone” of the LZ shaft working for me. I just wish I could get that feeling with them all as it is amazing!
I only had 1 shot today that the results surprises me with how it felt off the face. On the first par 5 of the day I smoked a driver(the only good one I hit with the Nemesys shaft) that left me 185 in. I pulled 7-iron knowing that I did not want to be long and the greens weren’t holding. I hit what I thought was a perfect shot and the ball just kept going. It landed on the back of the green and hopped all the way to the ditch 20 yards behind the green. I did manage to save par but it sure felt like a double bogey!
The more I play these the more they are growing on me.

... Just a one shot post to share. I was 1 under going to the difficult par 3 15th that plays uphill and the wind is always tricky. I had 188 which is usually a 4 iron for me, but we had a good 10 mph wind quartering from left to right and with us. I honestly felt like a 5 iron would be the right play IF I hit it well. Sometimes that means over swinging to get those extra yards. I reminded myself with my practice swing to trust the 5 iron and the helping wind and I put a really nice swing on the ball. This is one of the areas where the T100-S really shine. Hit them in the center and the results are very predictable. Nice high trajectory starting about 5 yds left of the pin and drifted right at it, bouncing a little right then spinning back a few feet to pin high. Unfortunately they put the cup on the side of the tier so it was an extremely difficult putt that I just missed on the high side.

... But this is one of the most difficult holes on the course that can play anywhere from 179 to 219, and you are guarded from the wind on the tee. So choosing the right club, reading the wind and trusting you made the right choice is never easy. Today it was. I am really, really liking these irons and shaft combo.

Another round in yesterday and 1 more today. One thing I have noticed while testing is the fact that I just don’t hit a lot of irons at my home course. It’s only 6300 yards from the whites, which is what everybody plays because the blues have 4 tee boxes with overgrown trees in the hitting window. Anyway other than the par 3’s there are maybe 2 holes where I hit anything longer than a wedge. I am playing another course today that is 6800 so I will get more flavors through the bag. Home course is now open later so going to go out this week and hit different clubs from different spots.

Almost had an ace yesterday. Par 3 8th. Playing 137 to a front flag on a green that has a false front. Anything that lands short of the pin spins off the front almost 20 yards. Started just right of the hole and lands 15 feet behind and to the right. Starts to spin and I know it is on the perfect line. Doesn’t quite make it there stops about 8” right. The irons are proving to have some forgiveness in them but when you hit them solid they are as predictable and controllable as any iron I have hit.

Like @blackngold_blood I am really starting to like these!

I just cruised through these 15 pages...great work so far guys!

One thing I am curious about when you get to the stage 2 reviews is the long irons in both sets. Any/all insight on feel, forgiveness, turf interaction, blade length, etc. compared to the other irons you play would be great. I know none of you are testing both sets, but color is still helpful/appreciated. With the updated lofts of the T-100s it would make blending into a T-200 set relatively easy, but it's not always an easy decision to make since it's tough to take long irons for a test drive.

Glad to hear you’re finding some consistency with the T200s.

My AP2s were fit for me as an MOI matched set. Something you may want to consider doing with the T200 if you love the feeling of that club. Basic idea is the clubs get heavier on the swing weight scale as they get shorter in length. But they’ll end up feeling the same swinging. Maybe then you’ll feel that same loading as you get with the six.

Scary to look at due to the size but they feel good and there is some forgiveness in there. The forgiveness in general is relative though, they are much less forgiving than my p790's feel wise but distance drop off is not huge.

Sunday par 5 6th hole I had 217 from fairway bunker to a back flag wind blowing about 15 from the left. Lip was somewhat a concern, but I knew that if I hit it well it wouldn't interfere. Waiting for the green to clear my playing partner comes over to discuss the shot. I told him if I hit it well it will land right where the lady on the green is (front 3rd of the green). So I took 4 iron and hit it, I caught it thin but it never left the flag stick, landed within 5 feet of where she was standing and rolled up to 12 feet. Knowing what these will do is a huge positive!

BUT

I am still unsure of how far they go. Same day 12th hole par 3 playing 190 right into a 15-20 wind. I had 5 iron in my hand but my playing partner hit first and his 3 iron was pin high. Knowing that I am almost exactly 1 club longer than him I went back to cart and grabbed the 4. Another beautiful high 4 iron with 3 yards of draw on it coming down right on the flag. Only it doesn't come down. It flew over the flag 20 yards and left me in the junk. Nothing I could do other than shrug my shoulders and make a note of the distance in the future. It flew 211 into the wind, I flushed it but I still never would have expected it to go that far.

There is a 1* separation in lofts between long irons of T100-S & T200's but I would guess that doesn't equate to much in distance differences. Blending would be a nice option.

... In the continuing saga of the golf gods laughing at me and steadfastly holding to not allowing me to have a hole in one, the T100-S did their best to foil the GG's plans. I had 177 with a very light breeze, maybe 3 mph at my back. Should be a 6 iron but with helping wind and the pin back and long being no bueno as coming out of the rough the green slopes away, I hit my 7 content with a 15-20 foot slightly uphill putt. Could not have put a better swing on it and it was tracking right at the hole. Landed maybe 10 feet short, hopped once and rolled right at the hole. My playing pards with a better view from forward tee's screamed "that's in the hole" but it just sat on the lip. Pictures tell the story.

... On #6 looking at a birdie putt from 15 feet, I was already thinking of my nemesis hole #7 that is uphill and into the wind, so 437 plays like 497, or at least seems to. I admonished myself for thinking ahead and just missed the putt on the low side, which I really hate. I tried to hit my driver farther than I needed and duck hooked it into the rough, leaving me 227 uphill over a bunker. The rough is thin and I decided I have more confidence in my T100-S 4 iron than I do my hybrid. So I laid up about 15 yards short of the green, pretty much right where I wanted to be. My hybrid is just not as accurate as my 4 iron, so even though I could have been on with my hybrid, I could also be in the face of the bunker or in deep rough where the water runs off the green and very thick. Pitched 6 feet past and made the putt for par. "See?" I told myself "nuthin to be afraid of." Until the next time of course. 🤪

... Gracias amigo. I have made peace with the fact that I will never have a HIO. Also not 1 but 2 insanely lucky Albatross so I am not bemoaning never having a HIO and truly enjoy reading about others. Obviously the law of averages say it is a possibility with as much as I play but it is just mentally healthier to accept the Golf Gods have a good laugh every now and then when they talk about new ways to tease me. Much worse than a shot like this one, about 10 years ago I hit a poor shot into the water on a very short 129 yd par 3 that never crossed the hazard, re-teed and 1 hopped it in the hole for a par. I could hear the GG's laughing and thought I heard one of them spiting out their beer. 🤣

... Ideal conditions today. 88* so the ball was flying and only about a 3-5 mph wind. So I clearly picked the wrong day to struggle. Let me just get aaaaaaaaalllllll my excuses out of the way first, because it could not be I was swinging poorly. Right? I had a 3:30 time and got there and checked in with the starter about 3:15. He says the 3 guys that booked 3:30  brought a friend so either you go out alone behind them out you join a 3some on the tee right now. So I rushed to the tee again without stretching and warming up and was a little stiff the entire front 9. The group was a father/son and their millennial friend. The son was a good player, the dad a 20+ something index and the friend completely clueless. On his phone, took extra shots without telling anyone so I needed eyes in the back of my head, never knew where his ball was going, played out of turn and tromped thru everyone's line on the greens. I just could not bring myself to educate him because he was polite and a good kid AND they were all friends and enjoying themselves, so I just kept my mouth shut and enjoyed their good cheer. Finally, I forgot my towel. I don't use a glove and wipe my grips before every shot to keep them tacky and they started to get a little slippery. Whew! Obviously I need some cheese with my whine. 🤪

... Truth be told I just had an off day and felt a little off the entire front 9. I hit one really good shot with my T100-S 6 iron that almost cost me a stroke. Lasered the distance to the hazard and came up with 194. Gentle breeze at my back so a 6 iron should travel 180 max. I forgot it is downhill so with the wind and of course it was the one shot I hit dead center after coming up short the first 7 holes, I hit it 192. Wind/downhill/perfect strike scenario after hitting the ball poorly and I almost found the water.

... So the takeaway from today is T100-S are like any other iron when you hit them off center they don't go as far and when you have a slightly open or closed face, directional control isn't very good.  Played the front 3 over par in ideal conditions... sigh. All 3 of my playing pards quit after 9, the starter gave me a towel and the back was wide open so I turned it into a practice round. Took several holes and some lie on the ground stretching to find a groove. Last 5 holes went well and took the bitter taste of bad play out of my mouth. Tomorrow should be much better. Every day on a golf course is an adventure!

An Albatross is much better and much rarer than a HIO, remember that generally a HIO is just an eagle....

Always brutal running straight to the box but sounds like not a bad round for that first paragraph!

Glad you were able to work it out on the back, its nice to be able to just get those extra shots in and work out a few things (especially new clubs)
