Fitness Goals: Helping Each Other Reach Our Goals

Excellent forum idea! I believe people really underestimate the benefit of physical fitness in relation to golf. The obvious reasons are more speed and power, but, I believe flexibility is more important. Being flexible in golf will absolutely lower your scores, as well as help prevent injuries on and off the course. When I played golf in college, my mentor pushed me to make physical fitness a priority. When I did, I made huge improvements on the course. I was able to hit it further, straighter, and get out of trouble a lot easier. One of the biggest target areas should be your core strength. The golf swing is centralized around your core. Having a stable core will allow you to do so much more with your golf swing.

One thing that is not done enough is a pre-round/practice stretching routine. Stretching before you play has incredible benefits, that will allow you to shoot lower scores.

Hey guys, any good stretches/strength building tips for the lower back that can be done at home? Dealt with a few days of lower back stiffness/pain and would definitely like to be on the field more often than the sidelines this upcoming year. At only 33, the body is starting to show that I need to care better for it.

Any advice is more than appreciated!

Yesterday's Workout - Shoulders - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/14521708393

Calories Burned - 3,231

Calories Consumed - 1,986

Today's Workout - Legs - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/14528643425

Gym was surprisingly busy for 545am - I had to wait at leg extensions and leg curls, and almost didn't get into the cables. Total wait time of 17 minutes today.

Busy weekend coming up - tonight I'm travelling down a couple hours south for my daughter's state gymnastics competition, a fundraiser sim golf tournament tomorrow morning at 8am, then entertaining my six year old and one of his friends for a few hours before they head out for his birthday party and I part ways for my annual beer festival with my brothers. On top of that I have a paper due on Saturday for the classes I am taking, project bid revisions that need to be ready for Monday and at some point I might get a couple hours of sleep. Get some!

Ran the San Diego Half Marathon today in honor of LCpl Stephen Perez. It was incredibly windy and my arms were spent after 4 miles. I'll probably be hurting from this one for a while. I was hoping to get under 2hrs 30 minutes for the race but the gail force winds certainly did a number on me.

Not a lot to share on my fitness journey as of late. Getting a. Cortisone shot Thursday and then hopefully I can get after it again next week. I am down about 5# over the last month mostly just from eating a little better and smarter.

Last week was a pretty good week for me workout wise. I did my 4 strength workouts on the tonal. Then I also did one decently long bike ride with the family (5 miles). I also got 2 stretching sessions in for my shoulder issues I’ve been having and some knee flare-ups. The stretching has really helped and I haven’t felt the pain since starting them twice a week!

I don’t know if this counts, but I went golfing today and it was cart path only on a very hilly golf course in Branson, Mo. I definitely got some steps in!

It definitely counts! Golf, especially walking, burns tons of calories (1,400 - 2,000 according to golf.com). Glad you got some outdoor golf in - we had 5" of the four letter "s" word on Friday. Was only supposed to be a trace to 1".

Saturday was a sh**show -  I had a sim golf tournament in the morning (played lights out for the front nine shooting a solo -6 in a three man scramble, then melted down on the back to finish -2). I had my annual brother's beer festival and went to town on ribs, several fantastic sides and the 30 different beers we sampled. Somehow I drank enough water to be able to get some decent sleep on Saturday night. I can't believe how much alcohol screws up my sleep now - I'm not sure at what age the switch flipped, but it seems like within the last 2 years anytime I have a beer after 8:30pm my sleep is pretty much guaranteed to be f'd hard either by heartburn or just poor quality sleep.

Five mornings per week I do set-ups, planks, push-ups, stretching exercises, and swing a weighted club.  I also walk while playing golf and walk with my wife.  I will turn 65 this summer and my goal is to play golf for as many years as possible.

So I also prefer to walk when I play .. with an electric push cart .. and got out for 9 yesterday with my wife. We played the Back 9 and on Hole 16 the battery died...

Was thinking about ditching the cart at the side of the tee on 17 and just carrying a few clubs but then said what the heck. Adjust the wheels to free wheel and off we go.

#17 is a Par 5 that plays mostly downhill .. so that was ok .. but 18 is a longish Par 4 that is uphill from the tee, then levels out, then goes up again towards the green...

So I got some extra leg work in! 😄

Then...

Doubled down this morning - a friend calls me up .. I'm 5 minutes from your house, we're going for a hike! .. we drive a few miles to a big state park. Thought it was gonna be 6 miles .. in the cold and *blowing* wind .. but turned into closer to 8 (and yes haha felt like 10!).

But a good workout - some up- and downhill and a big part of it was a single track trail running along the bluffs overlooking the water.

Nature highlight - early on the walk while still on a main path we're passing by a not super tall tree .. suddenly something large takes off .. turns into two very large things - Bald Eagles!! Two together! Wow!!

They just kinda flapped once or twice and floated over to the far side of pond .. and just as soon as they settled down a third took off from our side to join them... Wow. Three, all adult, Bald Eagles up close and personal! Very cool.

A deliberately slow 5k run with a more intense uphill run. I was able to keep my heart rate average below 150 for the 5k to recover from the half marathon then pushed myself to run up a hill. Probably not the best decision but wanted to push myself some. My left knee and right ankle are still acking from the race.

I'm only 21 miles from hitting 100 for the month of March. My plan was 1 mile short so I added an extra mile today. I'm going to run 4 miles tomorrow, golf Torrey North on Thursday, run 7 miles on Friday, and get 10 miles in on Sunday.

Can I do a brag then? They tell me squats help with power so I squat heavy.

Today I hit 365lb for 2!

I'm only 152lb on most days. Felt good. Nowhere else to share this. So thank you for being there, Spies.

That's f***ing sweet!

I'm trying to slowly work my way back up there. I got back up to 4x3 @295 two years ago. In high school my 1R max was 405, I don't think I'll get get back up that high.

Yesterday's Calories Burned: 3,060

My youngest son wanted pizza for his birthday (actual birthday on Tuesday, but we had a baseball scrimmage and weren't able to officially celebrate), so we went out and snagged a pie at our favorite place. I hit the pepperoni and bacon hard, and it was worth it! Still managed a good deficit for the day. I'm not sure if I have metabolically adapted or if my burn / intake numbers are off, but it feels like my goal is going much slower than what the math says it should. I'm down to 193ish from my start of 199, and I should be closer to 185 given the timeline and almost three months of 95% disciplined eating and working out. Getting old sucks, I guess.
