If you could design your own putter

Recommended Posts

If you could design your own putter what would you do?  The reason i ask the question is I have been forging for several years (10 + years) and maching longer.  I've gotten a wield hair and decided to  forge my own putter but i can't decide blade v mallet.  right now i have a spider mallet in the bag but up until now i have had a blade putter.  What i know is that it will be hand forged damascus, it will be finished milled, and it will be all steel.    at this point im thinking about doing a supper fat blade style but what are your thoughts?

I am a mallet guy but a fat blade would be cool

Mine would be a mallet design that looks like a spaceship!  Would look good looking down on the putt and with it upside down in the bag without a head cover.  Might even have lights and a laser that just happens to line up with the alignment line.

That's awesome @Dan Underwood you can really forge your own putter.

I'd go with a double or triple wide blade, like you suggested.

Go with a double, but with a thinner backend sole/tail that is the whole width of the blade (making it the depth of a mallet)

A forged damascus putter similar to the Odyssey 8 or Yes! Sophia with one of those, for lack of better words, spiral-ish looking necks would be pretty cool.

Id say something with a black rainbow pvd finish but the main tech would be removable face inserts.  Soft, medium, firm.  Maybe even offer milled inserts like the old scotty newport.

I think it would be incredibly hard to forge / mill a mallet due to the weight issues. Would need to be able to use different materials for the crown etc to really get the weight correct

a Damascus odyssey double wide with a twist neck as a one piece forged club with a milled face and cavity would be sick

I'm still working on it forge completely if I was going to go back to the complete old school true blade putter yes that would be on the easier side of things that I have done.  Trying my own take trying to figure out exactly what I am wanting and keeping it in the usga as a putter that would be legal and something that isn't just a wall hanger a little more on the harder side trying to make it mine not a copy of something else.  One of the golf high school coaches where I am at has me making him just the piece of steel that he is sending to a company. Not sure what or who but it will be fancy is all I know.  500+ layer count

Mine would definitely be some sort of double wide blade style of sorts. It is a style I have never owned, but am still in love with anytime I go try them in shops.

Wow!!! My compliments to you and your abilities to be able to do make your own putter.  I play a blade putter, just prefer the optics of it.  I have a slight arc so I have one balanced for that and it is quite a heavier putter as well.  It is "fatter" compared to others like Scotty C, but it is not likely as fat as what you are thinking about. I would love to see your creation when it is done!  I personally though would with black blade fat puter with very bright and obvious sight guides.

That is an amazing ability you have developed, working with the forging and creation of items is so cool but to make your own putter ... awesome!  I think I would do something that is different than most, a center shafted goose neck hosel (don't see many of these) with weight ports either on the bottom or ends to try and keep the face square through the putting stroke.  Good luck and can't wait to see what you develop!

Key design elements in my putter:

1. Round grip - 3"

2. heavier than standard (365 grams +)

3. counterbalanced

4. black head - no markings (no dots, lines etc.)

5. slant hosel

6. milled face

7. smaller than standard mid-mallet head

8. perimeter weighted

9. BGT shaft

I absolutely believe that all the senses have to be involved to truly enjoy the game. To wit; Visually stimulating as well as sound appealing. It would be an understated artistic piece that would get everyone interested.

Center shafted was a thought of mine too but i tried it and for me it wasn't appealing to my eye

I like the feel of a brass face like my old Bulls Eye and Otey Crissman putters.  I'd send my requirements (not to exceed USGA limits) to where I got my aero degree and have someone design it as a senior project.  Mid-sized mallet with a graphite putter shaft (37.7") and a pistol putter grip.   Hickory shaft is also an option - its all about looks and feel.

it would have a hidden laser and a sensor in the grip to let me know when my line is *exactly* right... and if I miss the line or put too much pace on the ball the grip would send an electrical shock as punishment.

Damascus forged would be amazing! Even though I like the mallet putters, I think this calls for a deep blade design. I’m not if it’s possible, but I would treat the process like what can be done with a damascus knife, only in reverse. The face would be as soft as possible with progressive hardening to the spine, or back of the blade. It would be interesting to test what that would feel like at impact. The target would be to make the feel at impact similar putters with face inserts, without the insert.  It wouldn’t be quite as soft obviously, but it might be enough to change the feel. It could also have hidden weights somehow, or at least machined so tight it would be very hard to see them. Nobody would know why it felt so cool!! Good luck and have fun with it!
