@jbern Thanks for starting this thread!

I decided to switch to JumboMax grips, in my case the Ultralite XS, this season because:

  1. I'm switching to a single plane swing using Kirk Junge's Setup4Impact approach and Kirk recommends these grips
  2. At nearly 68, my hands are starting to get age related arthritis and it seemed that the bigger grip would be easier to hold.

In late January, I ordered JMXs for my irons directly from the Company and had them installed on my clubs by Golf Galaxy. Please note that both Kirk Junge and Chandler Rusk offer 10% discounts on these grips and shipping is very reasonable to free depending on order size.

Thus far, I have had several range and one Trackman session with these grips. Because I'm changing my swing model, it is difficult to do a direct comparison, however, I really haven't had any significant issues adjusting to the larger grip size and had no issues with going right or hitting the ball shorter. In fact, now standard size grips feel odd to me.

I should be able to get out for my first round of the year next week, and will provide a further update then.

I tried Jumbo Max when they were originally released, before Bryson had even used them.

They only had one style back then and it was different. I really wanted to like them, but they just didn't work for me.

I didn't give up though - this time I tried something different.

I bought one -
JumboMax STR8 Tech® Non-Tapered × 1
JMX Ultralite / X-Small (+3/16")

I pretty much never take full swings with my 58 degree wedge and put this grip on there.

This has helped my chipping so much. Really has taken my wrists out of the swing and helped me release the club better.

The thing I would caution people about these grips is they are really hard to remove. Once you have them on you can't really pull them like traditional grips and I've had to cut some of them off. That hurts when it's a 15.00 grip....

If you're interested in diving a bit deeper, Peter Finch (youtube golfer) switched about a year ago and he has a couple of good videos on why and what he thinks of them.

I wouldn't have considered putting one of these on my 58*.  I have always used standard or even skinny grips on the wedges, but I can see where you're coming from where a larger grip would remove so much wrist action. I don't take many full 58* swings either, so I might give this a try.

Thanks for the caution! I used air to put mine on, hopefully I can get it off because I'd like to trim my Dr shaft down a bit... I'd hate to cut it.

I have been using midsized and recently got an ultralight and tour in size XS. Threw the tour on the 8 and ultralight on the 6 and went and hit 6, 7 and 8 to compare. Both grips straightened out the pull tendency I have been having with the irons. Plus I love the feel of the bigger grip. As far as the 2, I was striking tour much more consistent. I did gain a little speed with the ultralight but the strike was just inconsistent. This caused me to buy 2 more tours to try on the driver and a wedge. I also threw the ultralight on an another driver shaft. I liked the wedge and it didn’t cause me any issues with the variety of shift I like to play around the green. On the driver I don’t think there was a standout between the 2 as I had with the irons. After all that I decided to order a full set of the Zen lite. I did this for a few reasons. At 56 grams they are only a few grams lighter then my current grips so should only change swing weight about half a point. And I do like a tacky rubber that’s not to firm and I had seen some reviews that’s said they where a little softer and tackier then a Lampkin cross line or tour velvet. Just got them in and do like feel. Just need to get them on. Have a few things to try with the air install I prefer before having to do the traditional method as when I tried the other day I was being able to twist them. Once they are on all I will share more about my thoughts on feel and data when I get it.

Our age is similar and I also have the achy finger issues from using standard size grips. It’s great to hear the grips are looking promising. I guess I should bite the bullet and invest in the JMXs. I’m sure my hands will thank me.

Best of luck with Kirk’s swing method. I used it for about 5 months and was getting great results. Very straight. I’ve had a bad trail shoulder for many, many years (not related to Kirk’s swing). But it seemed this type swing was aggravating it. I certainly wish I could have stayed with. I’m sort of stuck with a body driven swing.

Current bag is PXG 0311 Gen5 Diver and 3 Wood, Ping 425 3 hybrid, PXG 0211 4-SW, Ping glide lob wedge with the eye grind, and Bettinardi mallet putter.

What I particularly like about Kirk's approach is that it allows for some customization. Additionally, his members section has a program of instruction which includes detailed information on setup and drills to ingrain the feeling of getting to a good impact position efficiently. Another instruction who seems really good is Chandler Rusk (CMR Golf Team on YT) who does remote video instruction. Rusk used to be Graves' top instructor before striking out on his own.  He also recommends JMX grips.

Someone I have become acquainted with on another forum who has using the SPS for over 20-years works with Chandler and speaks highly of his method.

Good to know. We're also similar in having trail shoulder issues. About 35-years ago I got a second-degree separation of the CV joint in my right shoulder in a fall. I was able to get back to playing in about a month (no surgery, just exercises the Doc suggested) which has begun acting up more and more as I've gotten older.

Good to know! I haven’t seen any of Chandler Rusk’s instruction. I’ll have to look into it!
I actually like that the Graves golf version has no customization. For whatever reason it just clicks in my head!

So I installed the grips last night with 2 wraps of tape and tried the hair spray method. This did make it easier to slide on but unfortunately this morning I am able to still twist them a little.  Mainly the lower half, the top seems to stay pretty good. I might give one last ditch effort at throwing an extra wrap on the bottom half today. As for the grips I am loving the feel and tackiness of them. Can’t wait to see how they feel when hitting some balls. The other thing I really like about the Zen Lite is there is no noticeable seem. Not that it was a dealbreaker for me on the other grips but a prefer not having that. IMG_2673.jpeg.f8ee111f03bd2bb46d91fd46b4ce9bfa.jpegIMG_2677.jpeg.42cdc574b6f323bef3ec8d9edfe01e76.jpeg

Yes to that! Good observation! I noticed the seam big time on the STR8 grips when handling the club with no glove. When I put a glove on for practice swings it’s much less noticeable. The seam is actually in a nice spot on my trail hand so I don’t think I’ll mind it on the course.

@jbern great idea to make this its own topic .. thx!!

So been looking at these for a while, and after my last two practice sessions over the last two days am now thinking more seriously about it .. and prob will order a few to test out on my practice clubs, eg. driver, 7i, SW or LW.

I can't say I've ever been totally comfortable with my grip on the golf club .. between old injuries (pre-golf) and progressing arthritis (yeah yeah familiar tune I know - interestingly the JumboMax website has a page devoted to arthritis) .. and especially the right hand which is my dominant hand 🤦‍♂️

Looking at texture and grip weight I'm tending towards JMX UltraLite for woods/hybrids/irons and Comfort Wrap on the wedges; possibly Small - Medium and Large - XL, respectively.

Been using CP2 Wrap the past few years - Std size on most clubs, although I'm moving to +2 wraps underneath, and Mid on the SW and LW. Took a few quick measurements and compared them to the specs of the JMX UltraLite .. the butt end of the CP2 around is approx the same as the middle measure of their Small, so bump that up one size to see if their Medium could help me get the grip more fully / comfortably into my fingers of the right (my trail) hand.

TBD 👍

Did you go through the sizing questions on the JumboMax site for them to recommend a size? Might be something else to help if you're deciding between a couple of sizes.

Let us know what you ultimately decide and how it feels for you!

Did you go through the sizing questions on the JumboMax site for them to recommend a size? Might be something else to help if you're deciding between a couple of sizes.

Let us know what you ultimately decide and how it feels for you!

Yep, did, and it came up Medium interestingly enough ... possibly 'cuz I moved the slider up to 5 on the grip pressure scale 😂

Also looked at the STR8 (although I don't use Arccos but noticed they offer end caps to fill the hole). But the reduced taper is appealing....

Following this with interest @jbern.  Great topic.

I have not tried Jumbo grips, but tried no taper grips a few years ago.  My swing was changing then (isn't it always) and I worried that the larger grip was causing me to not turn my wrists over, and leaving the face open.  In retrospect I doubt the grips were the cause.  I am curious to hear if you or others using the jumbos have any face - path issues or differences with the bigger size?

I was able to add another layer of tape to the bottom half the grips and I seems that will hopefully do the trick. Also was able to hit a few balls in the simulator today and definitely liked the grips. Nice and tacky and not overly firm. It was just one session and a small sample size. So could have just been one of those days but my launch angle with my 7 iron was about a degree and half lower than normal. Which I would be very happy with if it became my normal.

That is the fairest point ever.  LMAO.  Well done @cksurfdude.

But I still want to hear if the wrist turnover is different with the max grips.  Stubborn, I am.

I was able to get to the simulator and try out the JumboMax grips! To summarize the session; I was VERY impressed with the performance gains. I was mainly focusing on my new LTDx Dr because I wanted to get the settings dialed in. Every time I changed the hosel setting, the rib along the back was in a different spot on my grip and, I will say, this was mildly annoying (I don't know if it's because @ZackS mentioned it or not 😆). I did end up finding the best setting for me so far and it was having my 9* head set at -1.0* (8*).

Now onto the grips' feel.

I usually grip my clubs pretty tight, on the 1-10 scale, I usually put 7 or 8. For whatever reason, it feels like I don't need to grip with much pressure at all and I would say I was moved down to a 4 on grip pressure.

The tacky and soft feel of the STR8 is very good and comfortable. The only uncomfortable part was the rib when the grip wasn't aligned with the Dr face as I said above.

Another feel thing I noticed was the swing weighting on my 5w and 5hy. Those two clubs had midsized Lamkin PXG grips installed on them and they must be quite a bit heavier than the STR8 UltraLite grips because I noticed the head weight much more than previously.

And for performance.

The LTDx driver performed significantly better. However, this is not all because of the grips. I think a lot of the performance improvement is from dialing in the hosel setting. My previous driver average carry distance was 274.6 yds and during this session it was 281.8 yds.

I was most surprised with my 3w performance. My previous 3w average carry distance was 246 yds and during this session my average carry was 255.8 yds. My 3w has never felt so easy to hit and I think that reflected in how consistent the shots were. Previously, I would hit the 3w nicely, but there would always be some severe mishits that made the averages lower.

The 5w and the 4hy both had 4 yard average carry distance gains!

For those concerned with not being able to turn the club over ( @IndyBonzo ), I did NOT have that issue at all. My stock shot is a slight draw and I was able to draw the ball no problem. See the dispersion chart below from my driver. Every shot was a draw of varying magnitude. I definitely did not have trouble drawing my hybrid and actually had to concentrate on keeping my hands still through the shot to prevent overdrawing it.

LTDxdispersion03-10-2024.jpg.7afdff9dae5de15a4360191876cd3168.jpg

More to come on the course and then eventually longevity.

I was able to play with the grips yesterday and very much liked the feel. I still get feedback on strike but I do think vibration was dampened some which one of the things interesting about these as well as I do get some elbow pain from time to time. I don’t think it’s all golf related but if these help then I am all for it. I can’t say I have noticed a big performance gain. I did strike iron as well or maybe slightly better then normal and can turn it over if needed. More testing but happy so far and at minimum they feel more comfortable.

I have been looking at these grips for the past week or two! I am gearing up for the start of the season here in Northern Virginia and I just completed a complete bag overhaul which leaves me with 2 different grips in the bag.

Before my overhaul, I played CP4 Midsized grips for years and now I have Tour Velvet Standard and Lamkin Crossline 360 Midsize (thank you Edison for allowing me to order midsized grips). I don't love either grip and have noticed more of a draw bias throughout the bag than I have ever had before. So, I have been reading about grip sizes and reduced taper grips..

I was sized into the Medium on their website, but I am concerned that would be too drastic of a change (normal midsize is considered +1/32” over standard and their Medium is +5/16"). Has anyone made this large of a transition? I am also torn between the STR8 and Tapered version of the Tour Series (I have issues with my tempo, so am very interested in their claims of 'smoothing the swing out'), so any insight or comments would be helpful!

I've been using JumboMax (JMX) Grips off an on for the past 2 seasons. I've enjoyed using them, but have never tracked my usage with them to see if they made an actual performance or on-course difference. I wanted to create a spot where I could track my own usage, but started noticing a few others on the forum using or trying out JumboMax grips and thought others could add their opinions, thoughts, tips & tricks and data to a common thread.

Yesterday, I removed the Lampkin Crossline standard grip on my Cobra LTDx and used air to put on a JMX STR8 Ultralight grip. I set the air compressor to output 60psi and the grip went on nicely. I've been testing choking down on the grip and plan to cut the shaft of the LTDx down by 0.5-1.25 inches eventually, which is why I chose to use air to apply the grip. I took a few swings in the family room and I really like the initial feel of the softness (the STR8 is JMX's softest grip) and the less tapered size! Additionally, I will be putting the JMX STR8 grips on the 3w, 5w, and 4hy.

I have been using the JumboMax JumboFlat 17 armlock putter grip on my Sub70 AL-6 putter for several months now (photo from my intro and WITB: link here). So far so good with the putter grip. My only complaint is that some of the edges are starting to wear quickly because of the size of the grip sliding on every club in the bag as you pull it out and put it back.

The largest JMX grip I've used is size S and I use midsize on all non-JMX grips (except wedges I use standard size). So I have not made as drastic of a jump as you're proposing. If you're able to install these with air and purchase them from JumboMax.com, JMX will let you test out a single grip with a 30-day risk free trial. Maybe give that a shot? I haven't ordered from the JMX website, so I have no experience to provide there.

As far as the taper, it's really personal preference, but I'm a BIG fan of the less taper STR8 Ultralite grips that I'm currently using. I don't know that it's "smoothed out my swing," but I definitely don't require the grip pressure of mid-sized or standard grips! @TSauer ordered some STR8 grips also, so maybe he has had different experience than me.

Let us know what you decide or if you have any more questions!

Thank you for the replies! I am leaning towards the tapered version of the Tour Series in XS after chatting with the JMX Customer Support.

I will update if/when I make a decision on what I want to do. Customer Service did mention their return policy, so that’s a very cool safety net on $15 grips!

Good topic/ thread, @jbern!

I started trying out Jumbomax grips after hearing about them on Peter Finch's YT channel and his Rough Cut Podcast. I've experimented with a few different sizes and currently have the following combination:

JMX Zen Lite, Medium- driver and 3W

JMX Ultralite, Small- 7W and 3H

The Arccos grips are a bit obtrusive, but not something that bothers me when swinging the club. In the future, when convinced this is the way forward for me, maybe I'll invest in the STR8 Tour grips and buy a full set of the associated smaller Arccos sensors to embed in the end of those grips. That looks to be a much more visually satisfying solution.

image.png.dc1fdf15317f48438eb6baad045feddc.png

image.png.f327df655695138d50598e15f3f109d8.png

JMX Pistol Pro putter grip. Really liking this. Sufficiently narrow to help with touch/feel and not feel too isolated from the head and ball contact, but thicker than an old school skinny grip. Nice amount of surface softness and grip level. As above, the Arccos sensor doesn't fit that neatly on the putter grip, but it's more of a visual issue than use. In use I don't notice it.

image.png.045d61d329ede619edbf9dd30846df4a.pngimage.png.17ba6a8d8b144b9a7a6e5d39229734e8.png

I have a Standard Jumbo (SJ) Zen Lite waiting to be fitted to an iron to try out.

My irons and wedges currently have Golf Pride Tour Velvet Mid Size Plus4 grips, but I'd like to go a bit bigger. I think Tour Velvet jumbo might be the right size. I have that on a 2UDI and like the feel and size. The Zen Lite grip in jumbo might be the way forward, so I'll give one a try. Can't see me wanting to go beyond XS for irons.

On the Jumbomax website fitting tool, it gave me 'large' but having played medium I don't think I want to go bigger.

In use:

I have found the JMX grips to really help quieten my lead hand/wrist when swinging the driver in particular. My slice miss is less frequent and I'm squaring the face at impact more consistently. With the fairway woods and hybrid I'm a lot straighter, on average. The 3H (Stealth Plus) has always been a weapon, but recent rounds I've barely missed a fairway when using on the tee and I've been getting very good distances with it (longest ~240yds, which is more my 3W distance). I've only used the 3 wood a couple of times on-course recently but both tee shot and from rough were well struck and straight as an arrow. Very happy with the change for these clubs and that success is leading me to trying JMX grips on an iron (before I commit to a full set).

Thanks for sharing your experiences and photos with the JMX grips! I'm also glad you're having a positive experience. There's something to the tech in these grips and so far I'm chalking it up to requiring less grip pressure. DEFINITELY let us know how they work on your irons. I'm hitting my irons pretty well with midsized grips, so I'm not planning on switching anytime soon, but I might if there's benefits.

Do you find yourself liking the JMX ZenLite or the JMX UltraLite grips better?

Can you explain the arccos mounting situation a little more? They make grips specific for the arccos devices or special tips? It is a little unfortunate that they protrude out of the end of the grip so much.
