  5. The long awaited release from PING. PRESS RELEASE PING introduces Blueprint; forged blade iron PHOENIX (May 20, 2019): Focusing on the needs of highly skilled golfers who rely on pinpoint accuracy, PING introduced the Blueprint today, a forged-blade iron sized and shaped to ensure the workability and confidence required to play with score-lowering precision. The 8620 carbon steel iron is available for pre-order and custom fitting at authorized PING golf shops around the world beginning today. “As the name suggests, we’ve applied a Blueprint approach to the new irons,” said John K. Solheim, PING President. “Every detail is extremely precise and carefully calculated. The resulting design is spectacular in every way for the elite player -- performance, feel and looks. It’s a true shot-maker’s iron crafted with precision, and for precision.” “With that in mind,” Solheim continued, “we know the Blueprint iron isn’t for everyone. We encourage golfers interested in the Blueprint to get fit and compare it to other PING iron designs to find the best solution for their game. To paraphrase the warning sign next to the first tee at Bethpage Black that we saw so often last week during the PGA Championship, ‘The Blueprint is an extremely difficult iron to play, which we recommend only for highly skilled golfers.’ ” Workability, versatility Fully forged from 8620 carbon steel, the Blueprint’s small blade design appeals to the player who puts a premium on workability and trajectory control. Shorter blade lengths, less offset and narrow sole widths optimized to perform in all conditions give elite players an iron to attack any pin with confidence. A machined tungsten toe screw increases the MOI for additional forgiveness and combines with an internal heel weight to provide precise swing-weight tuning. “I put them in play immediately once they arrived,” said PING pro Tony Finau, the 15th–ranked player in the world. “They’re workable, incredibly versatile and feel great. There isn’t a single shot I can’t hit with them, which gives me a lot of confidence in pressure situations. The look at address is also perfect; the size and shape really fit my eye.” Tour inspired, Tour validated Based on requests from several PING professionals for a blade-style iron sized and shaped to deliver more control and workability, PING’s engineering team took a scientific, methodical approach to the development and design of the Blueprint iron. Through on-course observation sessions and conversations with the players about the shots they rely on to excel in competition, the engineers began the prototyping process to apply their learnings and gather additional feedback. After extensive in-house research with varying head sizes, the findings revealed the theory of “aim small, miss small” was validated by many of the highly skilled players in the test, who produced tighter stat areas when hitting the more compact head. That design was prototyped in limited quantities and released on tour nine months before the official introduction. “When we launched it on tour, a few players put it in play immediately and it wasn’t long before we had our first win,” continued Solheim. “Based on a lot of their input, we were able to deliver exactly what they were looking for while expanding our iron offerings into a new category. We’re very pleased with the development process we went through and are looking forward to applying our learnings to future PING products.” Four-step forging process A four-step, multi-stage process for the one-piece forging provides very tight dimensional tolerance control within the compact design. The high-strength, 8620 carbon steel increases the iron’s durability, ensuring long-lasting performance and quality. More than 50 steps in the manufacturing process, including machining the face and grooves, are 100% inspected. Pleasing sound and feel The choice of 8620 carbon steel combined with a head design that concentrates mass through the impact zone delivers a pleasing sound and feel. “The feel is amazing,” reports PING pro Louis Oosthuizen, who was the first player to put the new irons in his bag last fall and the first to win with them at the South African Open in December. “I love the feedback I get and how smoothly they go through the turf from any lie. They’re like no other iron I’ve ever hit. The Blueprint’s workability gives me the control to hit all the shots with the precision I need to win tournaments.” Blueprint Iron Specifications Manufacturing process: One-piece, four-step, multi-stage forging Materials/finish: 8620 carbon steel, tungsten toe/heel weights, hydropearl 2.0 finish Available: 2-9, PW, +- 2° lie angle Stock grip: Golf Pride MCC Align Black/White (Std., Mid) Optional grips: Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 in six sizes (Blue -1/16", Red -1/32", Aqua -1/64", White Std., Gold +1/32", Orange +1/16"); Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord (upcharge) in two sizes (White Std., Gold +1/32”) Arccos Smart Grips: Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 (upcharge) in two sizes (White Std., Aqua -1/64") Stock shaft options: True Temper Dynamic Gold 120 (S300, X100), PING AWT 2.0 (R, S, X) Aftermarket shaft options (no upcharge): True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 (R300, S300), True Temper Dynamic Gold (S300, X100), Project X LZ (5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5), True Temper XP95 (R300, S300), Nippon Pro Modus Tour 105 (S, X), KBS Tour (R, S, S+, X) U.S. MSRP: $230 per iron w/steel shaft (stock or aftermarket) ### PING and Blueprint are registered and unregistered trademarks of Karsten Manufacturing Corporation in the U.S. and other countries. 6. I don't know if there are many courses in the United States where you cross a state line twice during your round. Funny things - the "alcoholic beverage" warning is when you ENTER into RI; there are a couple of "dents" in the sign when you enter back into MA (wonder if that means anything? haha)

    How'd you play?

Shot 36-41 77 today notable for three reasons, at least. 1. I hit the ball really well for long stretches. 2. I had a 3 hole debacle stretch where I made a triple, a bogey and a very ugly bogey on a short par 5. :( 3. I came back after the triple with some great shots again. I averaged over 95 mph with driver on my holes that I measured with Swing Caddy and 241 with the driver according to shot scope - that included a 202 yard pop up. Had 3 drives over 250 at a country club that waters the heck out of its fairways, including 2 career long drives and two three woods on holes that finished past where I would have hit driver a year ago. I actually had to hit my 60 from 86 yards on one hole (3rd shot on a par 5 after the pop up). Last year 73 was maxed out - I hit it 15 feet past the pin. I also had 153 left on a 410 yard hole 170 to the back and knocked a smooth 7 iron off the back. We watched the PGA while playing, smoke cigars and drank scotch - fun day. 11. PRESS RELEASE PING introduces G410 LST driver; lower spin, higher MOI PHOENIX (May 20, 2019): PING announced the expansion of its G410 driver family today with the release of the G410 LST, a high-MOI driver engineered to produce low, stable spin with the shot-shaping control provided by the company’s innovative movable-weight technology. The multi-material driver is available for pre-order and custom fitting at authorized PING golf shops around the world beginning today. “With the tremendous success of the G410 Plus and SFT drivers introduced earlier this year, we’re pleased to add the highly anticipated G410 LST model to the line-up in time for the summer golf season,” said John K. Solheim, PING President. “It took us a little longer than planned but that was only because our first iteration didn’t out-perform the G400 LST. We re-worked the design to meet our performance improvement standards and are excited to get the G410 LST driver into golfer’s hands.” “The head size is slightly smaller than the Plus model and the CG is positioned to reduce spin several hundred rpm while still providing extremely high forgiveness,” Solheim added. “The combination of lower spin and more stability plus the ability to dial in the shot shape with our movable-weight technology greatly expands the types of golfers who can benefit from the technology of the G410 LST driver. As always, we encourage golfers to undergo a thorough custom fitting with a trained PING Fitting Specialist to determine which G410 driver model best fits their game.” Low, stable spin The G410 LST shares the movable-weight technology introduced in the G410 Plus model. The CG position is slightly forward of the G410 Plus in all three positions (Draw, Neutral, Fade), leading to spin reduction of approximately 200 to 400 rpm, depending on shaft choice and a golfer’s launch conditions. Each weight position shifts the CG location by 1/10" in each direction from neutral, influencing left or right shot direction approximately 10 yards (20 yards of correction between Draw and Fade settings). “The addition of the movable-weight technology in our low-spin driver option allows us to fit a wider range of golfers,” said Solheim. “A perfect example is a high-swing-speed player who battles a miss to the right. In that case, the combination of placing the weight in the draw position and the lower spin greatly improves dispersion and leads to increased ball speed for more distance.” Patented Dragonfly Technology on the inside creates an ultra-thin crown structure, saving weight, which is moved to the extreme boundary of the clubhead to increase the MOI by 3% (compared to the G400 LST) for added ball speed and forgiveness. Fast and powerful shape At 450cc, the G410 LST driver features a more rounded, pear-shaped design and combines with more efficient Turbulator Technology for advanced aerodynamics, leading to increased clubhead speed. Its “Tour Square” face sits slightly open and the score-line pattern frames the impact area to aid in alignment. The creased crown design provides a clean and powerful look at address. Forged, T9S+ face The unique forging and patented heat-treatment process of the T9S+ face powers a thinner, hotter impact area that is precision machined to elevate ball speed across the entire face for more flexing and faster ball speeds. The forged face and the internal geometry of the head are instrumental in producing the powerful feel and sound of the driver. Trajectory Tuning 2.0 The patented lightweight and aerodynamic adjustable hosel expands from five to eight settings, offering loft (0, +1⁰, +1.5⁰, -1⁰, -1.5⁰) and lie adjustments (including up to 3⁰ flatter than standard) to optimize ball flight. “The expansion of the loft options is a tremendous benefit for all golfers, and the flatter lie angles add another layer of opportunity for expert club fitters to really fine-tune a golfer’s driver,” said Solheim. Multiple shaft options Four high-performance shaft options are available at no upcharge and ensure a shaft-fitting solution to match the launch conditions of all golfers. The PING Tour 65 & 75 (lower launch, low spin, stable feel) and the counter-balanced PING Alta CB Red 55 (high-launching, lightweight) are developed in house by PING engineers. For popular custom after-market options, golfers can choose the Project X EvenFlow Black 75 (low launch, low spin) and Mitsubishi Tensei™ CK Orange 60 (mid launch angle, low spin). G410 LST Driver Specifications: Multi-material construction: Cast Ti 8-1-1 body, forged T9S+ face, high-density tungsten back weight, lightweight aluminum/thermoplastic adjustable hosel G410 LST loft options: 9⁰, 10.5⁰ Head volume: 450 cc Head weight: 208g Swing weight: D4 Std. lengths: 45.75" (PING Alta CB Red), 45.25” (PING Tour & Aftermarkets) Loft adjustability: 5 settings: +-1.5⁰ (0, +1⁰, +1.5⁰, -1⁰, -1.5⁰) Lie adjustability: Up to 3⁰ (Std: 57.0⁰) Stock shaft option: PING Alta CB Red (Soft R, R, S, X) No-upcharge shaft options: PING Tour 65, 75 (R, S, X), Mitsubishi Tensei CK Orange 60 (R, S, X), Project X Evenflow Black 75 (5.5, 6.0, 6.5) Stock grip: Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 in six sizes: Blue -1/16", Red -1/32", Aqua -1/64", White Std., Gold +1/32", Orange +1/16" Arccos Smart Grips (upcharge): Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 in two sizes (White Std., Aqua -1/64”) U.S. MSRP: $540 PING, G410, Turbulator Technology, Dragonfly and Alta are registered and unregistered trademarks of Karsten Manufacturing Corporation in the U.S. and other countries. 12. Something clicked today and some speed decided to show up. Ironically, it was very cool (mid-40s) and I didn't warm up much, so I'm not 100 percent sure where the speed came from. I saw a large number of drives hit 102-104 MPH, and my 8 iron hit 90 MPH a few times with a lot in the 87-88 MPH range. This is a huge jump in speed from a few weeks ago. Keeping track, last winter during my heated range sessions I was around 92-96 MPH on the Swing Caddie. I've started focusing on getting the red and blue sticks to increase at a similar rate to my green stick. Swing wise, I've been consciously working to eliminate an inside takeaway. The additional room in the downswing created by the better takeaway probably has a lot to do with the sudden speed bump. I obviously still have some issues with longer clubs. If speed trended linearly from my short irons, my driver should still be faster. Needless to say this was a nice surprise on the range this afternoon!

  14. I picked up a Callaway SureOut 62 degree wedge. My new golf course has mounds all around the greens and I could not use my bump and run style of chipping. I went out yesterday and this wedge is fricking awesome! It checks up like a butterfly landing with sore feet. I was able to hit high soft shots over sand traps, little pitch and stop shots from flat areas and all sorts of fun stuff. The darn thing is slicker than a buttered down ear of corn on the cob...... WOW where has it been all these years . My Squire Strike Wedge will be sitting it's green butt in my truck toolbox for a period of unknown timeout......

I’ve seen lots of trying to compare BK to Tiger. Majors by 30 seems to be the big trend. BK has only been on tour for 5 years, and if he wins the US Open, Open, and Masters he will have more major wins than Tiger in that first 5 year span. Tiger was 20 when he joined the PGA tour. BK was 24. Why can’t we let the guy have some credit for what he is doing? He’s doing just fine. ** just saw a new one** Starts to win 4, Tiger 21, Brooks 22...

My wife and I went to Corvallis OR this weekend to see my dad. It's a 300 mile trip one way. Left home on Friday; came back today. I always play miserably after a road trip; sitting in the car for 5 hours. So, we went to the course around 4 pm to play 9 holes just to get the bad shots out of my system before tomorrow's walking round with the other old guys. Doubled the first, bogeyed the second and third. Poor driving and really poor short game, but that's what suffers the most after a trip. Things started coming around on the par 3 #4 with a par from the frog-hair pin high right. Then on the par 5 #5 hole playing 550y with a right to left wind, I reached the green in 3 shots (usually difficult for me) but lipped out the birdie putt. Three more good shots on the par 5 #6 got me on the green but missed the birdie again. Duffed my 2nd shot on the par 4 #7 and made bogey. Made a 25 foot putt to save par on the par 3 #8 playing 180y today. Really good drive for me, 240y on the par 5 #9; very nice 2H layup into the wind short of the water to 126y. Nice 9i to 8 feet and a birdie for a round of 41.

  20. So when I was a kid I had a recurring dream about the Fry Guys from the McDonalds ads. In the dream they were following me. If I was in the car, they were in trees watching us drive by. They would look in my windows while I was in bed. I had this dream a lot. When I was in high school, I told a buddy about those dreams. He immediately said I was visited by aliens and they were keeping an eye on me, and my young brain couldn't process what was happening so I turned them into the Fry Guys to compensate/cope. I didn't sleep for WEEKS after he told me that. I'd go around the house at 2am making sure all the windows were locked so they couldn't get me.

I thought about this thread warming up yesterday. My friend just got a new set of Sub 70 639’s. He is 2 degrees upright and has a driver swing speed of a bit above 100. His irons are stiff steel shafts. I’m 2 degrees flat and have a driver swing speed of 95 (between S and R) and prefer graphite. So I hit his irons and surprise surprise every shot went 15 yards left (2 degrees up v. 2 degrees flat makes a difference.) Beyond a doubt I could figure out how to hit them straight but why and what adjustments might I have to make that could lead to bad habits? Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  28. NO one has ever lost a 54 hole lead on the PGA tour in ANY event of 7 shots or more. It doesn't matter which course 7 shots has proven insurmountable. BK started the final round at Erin Hills T2, 1 behind the leader Brian Harman, who by tour standards is a short driver. Not sure what the joke was. BK played the best round on day 1 and had the second best score on day 2 and more than half the field beat him on Sunday. Call it whatever you want, he just outplayed everyone in the field.

  30. I decided to take the day off work today and decided it was a good time to get 18 holes in. Didn't play too well and ended up shooting a 97. My game was off again, except for the driver. I did hit one in the trees on 3, then hit a weaker shot that ended up on the right side of the fairway. If I could stop pulling the ball, I would be great. This driver just wants to hit them straight. I sliced one on 7, but the tee shot is tight and I don't want to pull one into the houses. It's a mental thing. Sliced another on 1, but all my other misses right was me over compensating for the pull. I didn't hit a lot of fairways, but that more of a swing flaw than the driver. See also: pull. I hit my second and third longest drives ever on 17 and 18. The 17th is an intimidating tee shot. I hit it well enough to be in the fairway, but I just over shot it and ended up down the hill and landed in the area of the red arrow. On 18 I hit it with a little draw and it ended up getting a good bounce. It wasn't a great day ball striking or scoring, but it's definitely not the driver's fault. I guess I need to spend more time on the short game. Sent from my SM-G955U using MyGolfSpy mobile app

Happy #1: My baby is done with high school - last day of classes for Seniors was Friday. Saturday was prom. My wife and I worked the after prom party so we got to bed at 5 AM Sunday morning. I woke up, did a little bit of yard work, then camped in front of the PGA for the rest of the day. I was really kind of hoping DJ would have been able to finish stronger and post a number, but not at all upset about BK winning. Happy #2: Oldest daughter took off Saturday to study in Paris for 6 weeks. She loves her host family so far.

First skins game of the year, 81 (+6/+3 41/40) (adjusted down to an 80 thanks to Stroke Control). Started like crap, 2 pars (left birdie puts on lips) then double-bogey-double. Sat on the bench looking down the 6th hole to contemplate life, played the next 8 holes in even (6 pars, 1 bogey, 1 birdie). Then triple without a lost ball, just bad breaks, second under a tree, third ricochet fourth chip out, 5 short on green, 6 blow it by the flag, pick up for triple. Then three straight pars and a bogey. In all, an interesting round, won two skins despite being 5 shots better on handicap than anyone else... handicap will be going up, but them the breaks I guess.

you know that old song about the wheels on the bus going round and round ?? well, the wheels start off round....turned oblong....and then just plain ole fell off. 85 on a tight course where if you miss too far one way or the other (left/right/short/long) you may as well reach into the bag for a new ball. the shame of it is, post round I can think of at least 5 shots that I hit the ball well, but it flew longer than I expected and cost me 5 strokes. ...I can understand being upset when slicing/hooking/topping/fatting but when you hit it well and it still costs you strokes that is maddening.

  43. It's early yet so I'm trying hard not to jump to any conclusions. The course conditions have been swampy all spring long so it may be winter rust and very wet conditions that are throwing me off. I'll have more to write once we get deeper into the challenge but there are two things I've noticed so far with the F9 irons. I find it easier to focus on ball striking with smaller/sleeker irons. It's still strange to see the huge top line and chunky cavity on the Cobras. With the new irons I find my mind wandering more to the club than concentrating on the ball and what shot I need to hit. My old set gave immediate feedback on how well a particular shot was struck and helped diagnose flaws to make mid-round changes. The Cobras don't have that immediate feedback unless you hit one off the extreme toe or heel. Every shot seems to feel the same, be very high, and go about the same distance. That's actually ideal for most shots I'm just not used to it yet. Is it love at first sight for me with the Cobra F9 irons? No. Are they wrong for me and I'll never play well with them? Hell no! Give me another month and I'll be perfectly fine. Looking back at all of these early struggles will make my victory at the end that much more compelling.

  47. Way to throw a wrench in my plans haha. Was all ready to purchase a Tour Length F9. Was out yesterday with my G400 and couldn’t hit a thing. Gripped down about an inch and didn’t miss a fairway. Also found myself hitting further than I did last year. Wonder if I can order a shortened driver from Ping while still keeping the D3 swingweight... Sent from my iPad using MyGolfSpy

  49. Great question. My answer is: YES. For me, without question, the G410 outperformed my G400 driver mainly in the distance category. I had two range sessions on consecutive days where I was actually swinging well enough to observe a pretty dramatic and consistent difference between the two. I would clobber a 400 drive and only see my standard-issued 225-230 and then grab the 410 immediately and pound one 250..! No lie. The 410 is legit. I simply(?) have to re-find my earlier mojo & confidence with it. More to come on that and the increased adjustability in my stage-2.
