TheWahoo
While it is probably not a good idea, but I can't help myself from keeping track of how I am doing. My current goal at the start of any round is to break 90. So I keep track by assigning 5 to each hole. So if I score a 6 on a hole, it means I will need at least 2 fours to break 90 with all the others being 5. That's why I like Par 3's, because if I par it, it gives me some breathing room to score a 6 and perhaps offset some Par 5 holes. The good news is that if I get several 4s and perhaps par a 3 early in the round, I relax a bit and it seems to help me continue to play better. But its the opposite if I score some 6s early, I start to press and things continue down hill. I know that golf should be like poker-count em when the playing is done-, but I just can't stop keeping an eye on how I am doing in the effort to break 90. Rusty1885
Not anymore. I'm using game golf live tagging. Like you said sometime you can't help yourself and started to keep track or add up not how you've been doing but more of how you'd finish. I used to go nuts on my scorecard noting fairway hits, gir and number of putts. First round I broke 90 I've done it without keeping any score. I shot 87, I remember every shot after the round. Now it's easy with tagging, I get all kinds of stars and more importantly, I can forget the bad shots faster and not be reminded again for the rest of the round. MDGolfHacker
I do just because I'm trying to shoot a certain score. Might work against me though as I start to press on later holes. Golfspy_CG2
I've done better of late not making a conscious decision to add them up. Often it seems I'm the official scorer of the group so since I'm writing them down I do have some idea of where I am. Like you use 5 as my personal par. I do not consciously add up my score, but I do know how i'm playing.. Yet at the turn i add up and know from that point and if i have a great round going i'll be more aware.. Kenny B
I can recall every shot after a round... so keeping score hole by hole isn't a big deal, so I usually don't worry about it... I can to, which is probably why I don't get over bad shots very well and move on. When I play with the guys during the week, I know where I stand in relation to par after every hole. When my wife and I play, she keeps score for both of us, and I don't pay attention to what she puts down for me. After the round I look at it when we post scores and I will tell her if she made a mistake on a particular hole. “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

revkev
I think the question isn't so much do you write your scores down or keep stats but rather do you keep a running total in your head. Most of the time I do because if it's a competitive round there's going to be an accounting at the end and I need to know what number I made on each hole if I'm not the score keeper. I don't dwell on what the total means though. I've played enough golf to know that you never know how the other people on the course are doing or what may happen next. I played like crap last week and my opponent was rolling until he made an 8 when he was right in front of the green in two on a par 5. A skull, a chunk and four putts. You never know in golf so I try the best that I can with the shot at hand. That's funny I was reviewing this thread and saw that I typed the wrong word. Context makes it obvious that I intended shot but then again occasionally the shot turns out like.... well you know.
