does time off help?

Do to family obligations and some work with my photography business I haven't touched a club in about 10 days.  This spring I've struggled with my iron play and am scheduled to play tomorrow.  So I went to the range this am and hit a bucket of balls concentrating on my irons....thinking tempo and swing plane,ie, delivering the clubhead back to the ball on the same plane I took it back.  I was amazed at how many quality shots I hit.  I actually hit the 150 marker twice with my 7 iron!

Now the quest....can I bring that to the course tomorrow??!!

I think time off is a good thing once in a while. Especially if you were struggling as it acts as a reset.

The key like you said is being able to bring it out on course

When I was working, I would go on 2 weeks trips.  After I got back, my woods and irons worked well for a few days, but chipping and putting sucked. It took about about 18 holes to get the short game back to reasonable. I hope you have a great round!!

I've lived in cold weather climates for a while. It usually takes a good month to get the short game back on track. The full swing usually comes back in days. So 10 days is nothing!

There is no spoon.

I just did 10 days - it happens all the time - sometimes it is helpful.

I think it does. I live in the Seattle area, and it has been raining nonstop up until now. Sometimes I won't play for a couple of weeks (I hate losing balls in the fairway). Even though I haven't been playing much, my game is better than ever!

Yeah, life intervenes at times but for me a few days of not playing between rounds .. nor practicing "hard", either, eg. too many hours of hitting too many range balls .. is basically required to let the golf swing muscles (and other parts and old joints) rest and recover.

Ya get to a certain age and ya just can't do what you'd like to do as often as ya'd like to do it......

It also, as you implied Jim, lets you sorta clear your head and refresh your mind for the next outing. You know how we golfers are - you forget the bad shots and selectively remember the good shots, so you have a fresh and positive attitude going into the next round!

... I really hate losing more than 2-3 days in season. Visiting my son in LA last year I got to play 30 days in a row in Feb/March and again in May/June. I have never played better than the least two weeks of both trips as I was in such a groove and the everyday blue skies and 70/80ish temps certainly helped. That said, having some time off can reset the brain if you are struggling and cause less thinking about swing mechanics and more thinking about the shot.

It seems just like yesterday although it was 25 years ago we use to play 36 holes just about every Saturday. Then we would ease up with 27 on Sunday.  Now when we finish 18, I'm ready to hop in my truck and head to the house. I wake up the next day and feel like I've been run over by a hay baler.

Following up...played today ...very bad front nine, 3 doubles and real funky shots.  Shot 39 on the back with another double and really didn't make anything on the greens...but the ball striking was great.  Hit 7 out of the last nine greens.  So I'm hoping there's light at the end of the tunnel.
