Keep the hat on or take the hat off after the round is over?

808nation

Recommended Posts

Do you take your hat off or keep it on after the round is over? Is it personal preference or part of golf etiquette that should be followed.

- I prefer to keep my hat on, but always shake hands and give pleasantries to each player in my group at the end of the round.  Am I wrong? Am I showing disrespect?

I've always removed my hat as a sign of respect (as do most of my playing partners) but I wouldn't feel DISrespected if an opponent kept theirs on.

I think it depends on the person, I always take my hat and sun glasses off before I shake hands, but I'm not offended if the other person doesn't remove their hat.

When I'm wearing a lid, it always comes off prior to parting handshakes.

For me personally, it's also a big no-no in the clubhouse post round.

If avoiding the perception of disrespectful behavior is your prime motivation; maybe a good rule of thumb on this subject is committing to the same courtesies (hat, shades, handshake) your playing partners extend toward you.

Depends on who I'm playing with. New folks get the hat off and hand shake. Regulars get a kick in the arse and attaboy

Here in Aus, the hat removal thing when shaking hands has never really been a "thing" until recently. This is probably due in the main to coverage of PGA tour finishes.

The hats off in the clubhouse rule used to be strongly enforced, but this has relaxed in the last few years. My club in particular has really relaxed the dress code in an attempt to attract more members and green fee players. You still don't see many hats inside, and regulars don't take full "advantage" of the relaxed dress code.

Not being under the Queen's rule, I was reminded last summer to take my heart off where ever a picture of her Majesty was hanging. I had to run back into the clubhouse and forgot I had it on. The whole hat thing might go back to proper etiquette, but now I believe it's personal. Except indoors. ☺️

Hat always comes off when shaking hands after the round and hat is off when I go in the clubhouse.  I like the decorum of it.

I heard Arnie used to walk up to total strangers in a clubhouse and remind them to take their hats off.  I always think of that.

I always take my visor off so that I can show my opponent(s) that beat the h*ll out of me at least I have a greater head of hair.  LOL.

No really though I do take it off as a sign of respect.  Also off in clubhouse.  I can thank my grandma for these gems.  Don't itch your crotch in public and take your hat off indoors.

Like most others. I almost always do, especially if I'm playing with someone I don't know. If it's just me a say MDGH and very casual round I usually do as well, but there may have been a time or two I was distracted or just forgot.

Clubhouse or a private club always. Clubhouse of a muni or daily fee course, maybe 50/50. Probably should be at all times, but most don't and then where do you put the sweaty thing on the table or take up a chair??

On your knee? That's what I do. Or I ditch it in the car with the rest of my clubs before going in.

I'll tell you what, it was a little funny watching the women give their hugs at the end of the matches today and not remove their hats.

I mean, I get it. It's all wrapped up into their hair and such. But still, seemed weird.

Once in highschool my girlfriend at the time wanted me to meet her grandmother. I happened to be wearing a hat that day, and normally it comes off as soon as I walk in a building especially a house. This day I forgot for a minute because I was in the middle of a conversation with the girlfriend as we walked into her grandmother's house. Hadn't been introduced to Grandma yet because she was outside when we came in. So Grandma shuffles in and right up too me. So I turn to face her and say hi, and this very small German lady with a very sour look on her face gets as close as you can get to someone without giving them a hug and says, "Can I asks you sumving?". I said "of course", a little scared and completely unsure of what's coming next. She says "Vy do you Vears a hat inside?" Haha I don't forget to take it off anymore. I didn't live that one down for a while, she didn't use my name, I was just the kid who wore a hat in her house that one time. She was also quite fond of calling us peasants occasionally. She had quite the sense of humor.

Speaking of hugs. I get the pep talk Inkster gave Lexi in the fairway while she was struggling. But the hug was a bit much.

Can you see Davis Love III giving Spieth a hug in the 5th fairway after a putt. ❤️❤️

Etiquette in general is going away. Hats indoors, not fixing divots, who holds a door for anyone?, saying good morning... I see it a lot in my line of work.

It's Hey, and Yo Bro. Gosh forbid you ask them to take their hat off... wow. That's "the worst".

As many have said earlier- Hat off for handshakes after the round, and never indoors.  Early on in my career in uniform, I was taught the "Rules of the Rifles" - you wear your hat in the bar, you buy the bar a round - you put your hat on the bar, you buy the bar a round.  Learned to stuff the  brim behind the waistband in the small of my back- never lost it and never paid (unplanned) for another round.

Yup, played with a thresome yesterday they talked the talk and walked the walk about golf all day, but no golf etiquette...zero. Hit out of place, stepped in everyone's lines, talking out loud while someone was hitting, forget about fixing divots.

Ok so at the course I am a member and have been for 3+ years the hat thing is a non issue. Meaning everybody comes in the clubhouse with a hat on. The reason being it's not a fancy club with fancy dining etc.  In fact the 3+ years I have been a member, I have rarely seen the owners head.  It's a place where you hop out of your car, load up all your gear, including the hat on your head and run up to check in, get range balls, and then back outside.  There is a small snack bar where you can pick up beer, sandwiches, etc. at the turn or after a round. Folks occasionally take their hats off in the snack area however it's usually because during or after the round they are sweating like fat albert in a hawg wrestling contest. Now this is no slum bag course as DawgDaddy and folks who have played here can attest to however the hat thing is non existent. The only time the hat off thing comes in to play, is when you're meeting strangers for the first time and and you might want to put on some airs. Other than that it's get ya arse off the green and let's go have a beer .

I think it's a nice gesture to take the hat off. I agree with most of the others that I'm not offended if somebody else doesn't. I guess just more of an old fashion style for myself that it shows the respect that you would like to be shown.
